Damn gates of Crimea. Golden Gate of Crimea: description of the attraction. Why this place is worth a visit

Golden Gate called the beginning of the Crimea. At various times in history, this symbol marked the status of Kafa, Gezlev, Solkhat, Yeni-Kalei and many other places. The gates of Crimea - so today several places are called at the same time. It is well known that this honorary title belongs to Simferopol, Dzhankoy, Chongar, Ariyansk, Sevastopol, Kerch, Arabatsky arrow. There are also more local gates of Crimea, for example, Yalta, Baydarsky Gates and Angarsk Pass, which are considered the gates of the South Coast. The Akhtiyar bay by Crimeans is called the sea gate of Sevastopol.

The sea gates of Crimea are, without a doubt, Kerch and Sevastopol. The latter, in addition, is also called the key and shield of Crimea. This name was especially relevant during the military operations here. It is believed that the owner of Sevastopol is the ruler of the Crimea.

Another symbol is also known, which means opening, access, the beginning of acquaintance with one of the magnificent sights of the region - the Golden Gate of Crimea.

Acquaintance

Golden Gate of Crimea - the so-called coastal rock of arched form, located near the volcanic massif Kara-Dag, on the Black Sea coast. Address: Crimea, Koktebel, Karadag Nature Reserve. They are a symbol of Karadag Golden Gate. Crimea (Koktebel) is a popular resort with many unique attractions.

Pearl of Crimea - Golden Gate

Crimea (a photo of the described attraction is presented in the article) is a peninsula located in the northern part of the Black Sea. The Golden Gate is located directly behind the Robber Bay. A rock sticking out of the water near the shore is cut through through by a natural arch. In addition, it is called the Devil's Gate ("Shaitan-kapu"). The depth of the sea under the cliff is 15 meters. It rises by 8 m above sea level and reaches a width of 6 m.

The appearance of the arch is explained by the impact on the rock of the surf. The gates are “folded” from yellow basalt, therefore, in the afternoon they glow from them. It seems that the rock is really golden, hence one of its names.

Through the Golden Gate of Kara-Dag, which is rightfully considered the pearl of the Crimean peninsula, you can admire the sunrise - but only for several days a year during the winter solstice.

The gates are guarded by a stone Leo, and the Lion's Bay is closed by the lighthouse rock. Almost from all Crimean coastal cities sea excursions to the cliffs of Kara-Dag are carried out, but most regularly from Feodosia and Koktebel. Everyone certainly needs to see this beauty at least once.

Follow the Odyssey

It is possible that, having got here, the traveler will repeat one of the amazing adventures of the legendary Odyssey, who, wandering to the Cimmerian shores, many believe, visited one of the fabulous bays of Kara-Dag.

It is known that the Golden Gate made an indelible impression on the great Pushkin, who subsequently reflected his acquaintance with the attraction (as biographers claim) in the famous marginal manuscript of the famous "Eugene Onegin."

Blue sea

The biggest impression on tourists is not even the rock, and the sea around it is amazing, sparkling, unusually blue, as if tinted with Prussian blue. Everyone who has visited the coast of Kara-Dag knows that the sea is truly fabulous. Here it changes its colors endlessly: it is either quiet and affectionate, turquoise, sometimes pearl with a light mist spreading over its surface, then blue-cornflower blue, competing with its blueness with the sky itself.

But the sea element here, as elsewhere, is capricious and unstable - a furious wind has already come and drives gray shafts to the rocks, which rise and crash against the rocks.

With the onset of evening or morning, the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains appear clearer and sharper, and then from the shore you can watch how the marine colors and shades change.

The kindest place in the world

Many have noticed that the Golden Gate, illuminated by the bright sunshine that caresses this unique natural creation, seems to emit a certain luminosity. They are surrounded by the infinite tenderness of the Universe - this is how travelers speak of this place, expressing confidence that these rocks in Kara-Dag are one of the kindest places in Crimea, and maybe even the planet. Many believe that the Golden Gate is the beginning of the road to parallel worlds. If this is true, then the world that opens behind them is imbued with love, affection and kindness. There simply cannot be another - because only at the sight of an arch leading to a different being, does everyone feel an unusual pacification and happiness.

Myths

Many people believe that if, floating through an arch, toss a coin into a rock so that it rings, and at the same time make a wish, it will come true.

A huge number of myths and legends are associated with this place in the Crimea. For example, do you know that it was through the Golden Gate of Kara-Dag that Odysseus and Hercules descended into the underworld of Hades? Do you know that, swimming past these rocks, you can see how the clock stops, navigation stops, and on the air you can hear moans and screams breaking through the frequencies? Have you heard that unidentified objects fly into these rocks, which enter the sea water and disappear in the depths?

And the local population says that somewhere in these places lives the mysterious Karadag monster hunting dolphins, which are often caught with traces of strange bites.

Legends and myths surround these places in great numbers, but the only thing that is undeniable and what everyone can verify personally is the extraordinary beauty of the Golden Gate. They will always remain in the heart of everyone who visits the attraction. And this is not a myth, but the truth.

Today's story is about one of the three visual symbols of Crimea - the Golden Gate rock.
Along with Swallow’s Nest and Bear Mountain, this rock is most often seen in various souvenir photographs, postcards, magnets in the Crimea, as well as in articles and on the covers of magazines telling about the Crimea.
One of the favorite places for tourists is a natural object created by an ancient volcano, and then “modified” by sea waves and wind.
In ancient times, the rock was called in a completely different way - the Four Gate (or Sheytan-Kapu) and it was believed that there is an entrance to the Underworld ...

The most famous rock of Crimea is located in the east of the peninsula, at the foot of the ancient extinct volcano Karadag.
Volcanic activity many millions of years ago created many incredible formations in this place, some of which I already spoke about a few days ago. One of these entities is the Golden Gate.

It was already after the storm and wind expanded the natural opening to a huge size, through which even a small pleasure boat can sail. But first there was a volcano. It is enough to take a closer look at the structure of the rock.
Remember my recent post about the volcano at Cape Fiolent? Doesn't it look like a rock?

Why is the gate golden?
First, at dawn, they really look golden. Although not everyone can see the dawn from the right point, because the rock is located on the territory of the reserve and access to the wild beach at the foot of the Lion's Day is forbidden and is guarded by rangers of the reserve.
But the rock becomes "golden" and again during the day - at about 13-14 hours. At this time, in the summer, the sun is in such a position that the incident rays of the sun change the color of the rock to close to gold. She is beautiful at sunset.

What is this happening for?
The fact is that the rock is completely covered with yellow lichens, which play in the sunlight.

True, recently its upper part has become more white than yellow. This is due to an increase in the number of red-crested cormorant that nests in these places. And his litter increasingly covers the surrounding rocks.
Despite the seemingly not very large sizes, the rock is quite massive. Its height is 8 meters and its width is 6. Just two years ago, almost all pleasure boats carrying tourists from Koktebel, Kurortny or Feodosia passed in the opening, and tourists threw coins for good luck.
However, since the beginning of the holiday season of 2012, by order of the Ministry of Nature of Ukraine, a ban on the passage of boats under the Golden Gate was introduced, and the entire tourist route along the marine part of the reserve was changed, which now runs at least 100 meters from the coastline.
This measure, in my opinion, is quite justified, taking into account the eco-culture of our tourists and the damage that dozens of ships inflict in the summer, invading the wild.
To the opponents of these innovations, I can only say the following - over the several years that have occurred after tightening access to the territory of the reserve (and its mountain-forest part also affected it), the reserve has changed for the better. It became much cleaner, dozens of trodden paths were overgrown with grass, I again began to see wild animals on the ecological path with the naked eye, the number of wild birds increased and this is the only nature reserve in Crimea where I did not see garbage at all (!!!). Neither on the coast nor in the mountains.

The Golden Gate, Leo's Dyke and the Devil's Fireplace gorge are traces of the activity of an ancient volcano.

Minutes when the rock has a golden color.

Dawn at the Golden Gate. Of course, the most famous shots when it is possible to shoot the sun directly in the rock opening, but this is only possible a few days a year ...
Who knows, maybe one day you’ll see this shot in my magazine ...

P.S. The shooting was carried out with the official permission of the Karadag reserve from a service boat.

History of the Golden Gate of Crimea

Nature gives us delightful moments of pleasure and admiration. Beautiful landscapes inspire creative natures - artists, poets, writers, architects ... We see in it a source of inspiration and happiness. There is one place on our planet where you should definitely visit those who want to feel the magical beauty of the sea, golden rocks and amazing sky. We are talking about the Golden Gate rock, magical in its beauty and inner strength. This sample of natural art is located on the Eastern coast of Crimea, near the village of Koktebel, in the rocks of Kara-Dag.

Features of the Golden Gate of Crimea

Why is this rock so interesting? First of all, with its structure - it floats straight out of the sea, forming a majestic stone arch. And in the rays of the bright sun she casts a magical golden hue. Undoubtedly, the terrain around the rock itself fuels the imagination ... But first things first.

Secrets of the Golden Gate

In Crimea, many of the most unusual and mysterious places, but, of course, a special place among all these attractions is occupied by the cliffs of Kara-Dag. The history of these places begins with the ancient name given to him by the Crimean Tatars - "Black Mountain", that is how the name Kara-Dag is translated into Russian. Indeed, if you visit the Crimea, you will see many different rocks, and most of them will be light, brown and sand shades. But not Mount Kara-Dag. It rises like a black giant over the surrounding landscape.

The reason for this coloring is the origin of the rocks. Most recently, scientists found that in the distant past, Mount Kara-Dag was a huge volcano and after the eruption was covered with rocks of volcanic origin - basalt, porphyrite, andesite. Several monasteries are located on the shores of these feces, because here is a sacred land, with which many biblical legends are associated. One of them claims that it was on the territory of Koktebel that the famous battle of St. George the Victorious and the Terrible Serpent was held. Locals and tourists, walking along these shores, sometimes hear a bell ringing. Legends narrate that the bells of Stephen of Sugdea from distant Constantinople ring this bell, which sends its blessings to local monks.

The cliffs of Kara-Dag are so fantastic that they resemble the magical and frightening pirate island from a children's book. Dark gorges, secret bays, picturesque coppices, flat boulders and sharp peaks of rocks - all this inspires certain thoughts. And for good reason, one of the historical assumptions says that perhaps in ancient times pirates stayed here. Secret bays and sharp cliffs are an excellent refuge from royal soldiers. The coastline itself is so diverse that the locals gave each unusual ledge its name - the Sphinx, Elephant, Gingerbread Horse, Ivan the Robber Rock, etc. Each cliff and cliff has its own distinctive history ... How many have seen these cliffs and still retain their magnificent appearance.

Another legend of these places is associated with mysterious treasures. Since the Black Rock used to be a volcano, and after the volcano erupts, you can find a lot of precious stones around the earth ... Legends can be exaggerated at the expense of precious stones, but semi-precious stones do occur, many tourists and locals were found in mountains of gems. And of course, the most precious and even fabulous island on the coast.

Kara-Dag - Golden Gate.

Lonely golden arch. It has been scientifically proven that the famous Golden Gate rock formed many millions of years ago, exactly at the time when the eruption of the mighty volcano Kara-Dag. The Golden Macaw is nothing more than part of a collapsed volcano, part on land, part in the sea. Undoubtedly, it is precisely with its shape that the rock immediately attracts attention. There are many legends and mystical, fantastic stories about her. Ever since ancient Greece, the inhabitants of Hellas believed that this gate is the entrance to the afterlife of Hades.

The inhabitants of these places, the Crimean Tatars, called this rock - Shaitan-Kapu, which in translation means "Gate of the Devil". It is interesting that it was this name of the unusual rock that attracted the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. On one of the pages of the manuscript "Eugene Onegin" he painted a rock arch, and next to a dancing line. Of course, such a mystical name is inspired by the fact that the rock resembles a gate to nowhere, into another parallel world. More recently, the Golden Gate began to be called the magic arch. During sunset, the cliff really glows with a purple golden light. The magic of this light is unraveled - all thanks to the specific lichens that cover almost the entire surface of the mountain. But even this prosaic explanation does not make this place less beautiful or mysterious.

It is interesting that at different times of the day the rock looks and shines in completely different ways: in the rays of sunset it is golden, in the morning snow-white, in the afternoon black with outlined edges ... This transformation is very exciting for photographers and artists. Another miracle of this region is the sea around Kara-Dag. Here it is especially beautiful! Many argue that only in these parts the sea acquires a magical blue color. Why this happens many years ago, geologists explained: volcanic basalt covers the entire bottom of the bay. It is thanks to him that water more strongly reflects the blue of the sky and becomes surprisingly blue.

When you look at the bay, there is a rock arch, it seems downward that it is just infinitely deep ... In fact, this pirate bay has a depth of 15 m. Many of the poets of our country admired these picturesque landscapes - Marina Tsvetaeva, Maximilian Voloshin, Konstantin Paustovsky, Osip Mandelstamp ... Artists painted these places in their paintings. One of the most striking examples is the picture of the famous morinist - the legendary and unique Aivazovsky. Everyone who can visit the Crimea, must visit these historical mysterious and very beautiful places - here you will be visited by inspiration and happiness. Come to the Crimea, to Koktebel and enjoy the sunset on Mount Kara-Dag, peering into the distance through the Golden Gate.

Which once upon a time was an active volcano, there is a rock in the form of an arch. It is called the Golden Gate.

The most beautiful landmark of natural origin is the most recognizable rock of Kara-Dag, its "visiting card", attracting many tourists. The Golden Gate is located in the urban district of Feodosia, between the villages of Koktebel and Kurortnoye.

The height of the Golden Gate rock in Crimea reaches just over 8 meters above water, the total height from the bottom is more than 15 meters.

From below, the tufa ridge is separated by long benches of small width, due to which there is a resemblance to the amphitheater, as if nature had deliberately arranged so that an amazingly beautiful landscape with the Golden Gate of Kara-Dag can be seen from this place. The size of the Golden Gate seems rather modest from above, but this appearance is misleading - not only fishermen’s boats sailing under the arch can pass, but also small motor ships on which vacationers like to go for boat trips.

Prices for excursions to the Golden Gate rock

The arch can be accessed as part of excursion routes organized by the Kara-Dag Nature Reserve. Visiting the protected area is allowed only accompanied by the staff of the institution. Groups are formed by appointment by phone: + 7-36562-26287, + 7-978-75-61-454 or by e-mail: [email protected]  In summer, a regular schedule of excursions is approved. Tickets must be purchased immediately before departure on the route.

A visit to the Golden Gate rock is included in hiking and sea routes. The first option is the ecological trail No. 1 “Big Karadag”. Cost: for adults - 600 rubles, for children (7-14 years) - 400 rubles, participation for children under 7 years old is free. You can go on it at any time of the year, the trail is a mountain pedestrian, closes only in rainy weather. The minimum number of participants is 6 people. The route goes from Kurortnoye to Koktebel, you can go through the ring route, the path goes along the slope of the Coastal Range, through the South Pass. Participants of the excursion trip will visit several viewing platforms and see other interesting cliffs and gorges, in addition to the "Golden Gate" of Karadag near Koktebel. The transition requires certain physical efforts, it is not recommended for people with diseases of the cardiovascular system. The organizers are asking to prepare and provide with themselves 1 liter of water, comfortable sports shoes, a hat. The route is 7 kilometers long and takes 4 hours.

Sea excursions to the Golden Gate in Crimea

The second option is to look at the Golden Gate rock in the Crimea - from the water. The reserve organizes boat trips along the ecological trail No. 3 "Along the extinct Karadag volcano." The price of a boat trip to the Golden Gate is the same for adults and children - 500 rubles. The route operates seasonally, usually from May to October, it is necessary to clarify the mode of operation on the reserve’s official website. The length is 8 kilometers, the duration is 1 hour. The excursion goes along the coast of Karadag from the pier of the reserve. Participants of the walk will see many picturesque bays and various volcanic formations, grottoes and stones. According to tourists, near the "Golden Gate" of Karadag in the Crimea you can meet dolphins. The depth here is about 50 meters, the water is very clear.

You can also get a sea excursion at various travel agencies: it will be a trip on a small boat or a big boat, usually it takes about 20 minutes to swim near the Golden Gate rock from the Karadag massif in Crimea. The cost of such boat trips will be slightly higher than that of the reserve. The most popular departure point is Koktebel, boats also come from Feodosia and the village of Kurortnoye.

Story

The Golden Gate rock near Koktebel broke away from the Karadag massif several million years ago. That is, it also has a volcanic origin. Over time, its shape was formed by sea waves and wind.

Now the rock has a beautiful name due to the fact that its golden color is clearly visible in sunny weather. It is best to observe this from 12:00 to 15:00 hours. This is due to the play of light on yellow lichens covering the arched rock.

However, at a time when the ancient Greeks lived in Crimea, the rock was called the "Devil's Gate". It was believed that it was here that the heroes of myths descended into the underworld of the dead. Among the locals there are many stories about the abnormality of this place: how the clock stops under the gate, navigation does not work, interference and voices are heard on the air. They also say that unidentified objects fly near the rock, and a monster lives under it. Therefore, even now, the Golden Gate rock is called by some “Devil's Gate”.

The “Golden Gate” of Crimea is depicted in a drawing made by A. S. Pushkin in the margins of the manuscript “Eugene Onegin” after a trip along the Crimean coast.

Video about the Golden Gate rock of Karadag:

The Golden Gate Rock is a local attraction of Koktebel - a small resort town in the east of Crimea. Every year, many vacationers come here who spend their holidays here, but few of them know about the Golden Gate, more precisely, about the history of this place, about what legends exist and much more. Well, that would have to be fixed.

Description and where is

As mentioned above, the Golden Gate is located in the Crimea, in Koktebel, not far from the Kara-Dag mountain range. Some tourists who first arrived in Crimea often think that this is some kind of historical and architectural structure, like the Arc de Triomphe or something similar, because the name is quite consistent, but no. The object has a completely natural origin. Once it was a solid rock, but winds and waves over many centuries made a through hole in it, thereby turning it into an arch, under which boats and just vacationers swim.

The Golden Gate rock in Koktebel has a height of about 15 meters and a width of 6 meters, and it got the prefix "golden" because of its natural material - yellow balsamite, which shines slightly in very bright sunshine.

How to get there

In order to get to the Golden Gate rock in Koktebel, you must first get into the city itself. There are only two ways to do this: by car or by bus. Now in more detail about each of them.

Personal transport

By private transport, mainly Crimeans from other settlements or tourists from Kerch get there

So, to get to Koktebel from Kerch, you need to go onto the E97 road, it is also M17. It is easy to do. From the crossing, you should go straight to the intersection with the intersection of ul. Kirov. Then you will need to turn onto the street. Marshal Eremenko, and leave from her on the street. Gorky and further on to the M17 highway, which will lead to Koktebel itself. The total travel time will be approximately 1 hour 45 minutes or slightly less.

As for the road from other places, for example from Simferopol, you can get here by following the P23 road. In time it will take no more than 2, and maybe less, hours.

Bus

Another equally effective way to get to Koktebel is by bus. Departures from Simferopol are regular, the only thing when the tourist season is drawing to a close is the number of flights drops significantly, but you can always get to Feodosia, and from there to Koktebel. Of course, not too comfortable, but still.

If we talk about a trip from Kerch, then the situation here is a little worse. Of direct flights to Koktebel, only 1 bus runs, and then at 9:30 in the morning. In all other cases, you have to move with a transfer in Feodosia, which, again, is extremely inconvenient.

That, in fact, is all that relates to travel to Koktebel. Further along the Golden Gate course.

Golden Gate Road

Now, after arriving at the place, it's time to tell how to get to the Golden Gate in Koktebel. The attraction is located on the territory of the Karadag Natural Reserve. There are several ways to get there:

  • on foot;
  • as part of the tour;
  • by car.

Looking ahead, I would like to note the following fact - even though there are several options, all of them ultimately come together in one.

On foot or by car

To get from Koktebel to the Golden Gate, you will need to go no less - a little more than 6 km. Of course, the path can be significantly reduced if you use the services of a regular or regular taxi, which will take you to the entrance to the Karadag Nature Reserve. There you will need to buy an entrance ticket, which costs 300 rubles, and join one of the tourist groups.

Yes, unfortunately, it will not be possible to independently enter the territory, only as part of a walking tour, but more on that below.

If we talk about how to drive to the Golden Gate in Koktebel by car, then everything is absolutely the same as in the previous version. The only thing that can be done is to get to the entrance, where in the future a ticket for visiting the reserve is purchased. Entry in a personal car is strictly prohibited.

Walking tours

So, after the entrance ticket to the reserve is purchased, you will need to join any tourist group. There are always people here, so there will definitely not be any problems with the waiting time. By the way, the entire walking route is about 7 km or a little more, and also requires a little physical preparation, since there are both slopes and climbs. Everything is complicated by the fact that it is very hot in the summer, even in the early hours. It is recommended to take a sufficient amount of water with you.

On the way, you can admire beautiful landscapes and gorgeous views of the cliffs of Kara-Dag, while listening to the guide’s stories about these places. Honestly, one of the main disadvantages of any excursion is limited in everything, that is, you need to move only strictly along the route in order to meet the allotted time frame. Fortunately, during halts and small parking you can wander around the neighborhood yourself. Well, okay, now is not about that.

The tour itself is very exciting, and for one such "sunset" you can completely fill out the tourist album. The places here are very beautiful, and from some points, they are magnificent at all.

After about half the route, a small parking lot is organized, just in the place where you can see the sea and the very Golden Gate. At first it may seem that you cannot go down to them, but if you just take a good look, the paved path will immediately catch your eye.

The descent is quite normal and does not cause difficulties. Naturally, one should not talk about the intention to go down, because this is prohibited within the framework of the tour.

In general, the main goal has been achieved. Further travel is also quite interesting and allows you to make many more gorgeous shots, but you need to move on.

Sea tour

A boat trip is one of the most popular excursions by sea to the Golden Gate in Koktebel. Such a trip lasts, as a rule, 1 hour 30 minutes - 2 hours, it all depends on the place of departure. A ticket is not too expensive - 600 rubles, but depending on many details, such as the size of the vessel, its class, etc., the price can vary up to 1200 rubles. and higher.

The route begins either from the pier in Koktebel, or from the nearest town of Kurortnoye. As you progress, the guide talks about the history of these places and introduces you to some of the sights that are clearly visible from the sea. Here, for example, one of these is the rock or Shaitan Barmak.

During the walk, it does not look as spectacular as from the sea. By the way, when you go near this place, equipment (telephones or cameras) may fail! You can also see the rock Sail, Roaring Grotto, the lighthouse rock and the Snake waterfall.

The culmination will be the Golden Gate Arch, under which the boat will sail. At this moment, usually people make a wish and throw a coin so that it hits the rock and falls into the sea. Unfortunately, not all sightseeing boats pass under the arch, so this question needs to be clarified in advance. After the Golden Gate, tourists are given some time (10-15 minutes) to swim in the sea, after which the boat turns and goes back.

On this sea excursion ends.

Legend

Well, in conclusion, I would like to tell the legend of the Golden Gate in Koktebel. Crimea, in general, is famous for its legends about various places, so this attraction was no exception. The legend is connected, naturally, with the other world.

Initially, the rock was called Shaitan-Kapu, which can be translated as "damn gate" or "gate of the devil." The legend says that once a fisherman returned home on his boat, but a rising storm threw him ashore, and the ship scattered into chips when it hit the rocks. Then the fisherman had no choice but to make a deal with the devil himself.

The condition was simple - to swim under the same arch. The fisherman agreed and immediately did it, as a result of which he immediately lost 20 years of his life. From that moment, the locals tried not to get close to the gates, so as not to bring disaster upon themselves.

And that’s all. Have a nice trip!
