Our trip

We could not find information whether it was possible to catch a direct bus in Bali-Jakarta somewhere halfway, for example, in the area of \u200b\u200bIjen volcano (we rode just on it), so we had to be content with non-tourist city transport and travel with transfers.

I’ll tell you how we rode, but this is not an ideal option. But only one of many.

  1. A car from Canggu, Bali to the northwest of Bali.
  2. Bali - Java ferry, it’s worth a penny, I don’t remember the exact number, 40 minutes on the way. It goes 1 time in 1 hour. As far as I know, the ferry is round-the-clock.
  3. Port Banyuwangi - Probolinggo, 150,000 rupees, journey 5.5 hours. Gouged bus without a conveyor.
  4. Probolinggo - Surabaya, 20,000 rupees, travel time 2.5 hours. Great modern bus with Conder.
  5. Surabaya - Jakarta, 280,000 rupees, the journey takes 17 hours. Great modern bus with Conder.

From Denpassar, Bali and to the port of Banyuwangi (there is Ijen volcano nearby), you can also get by bus. Buses Indonesia Abadi, Margahayu, DAMRI or Akas, which go from Denpassar to Surabaya, advise. If the volcano is not interesting to you, then, accordingly, you can go to the final Surabaya.

A direct bus runs from Banyuwangi Port to Jakarta for 480,000 rupees. The driver called the travel time 28 hours. The downside is that after lunch there is only 1 bus at 7 pm. We would have arrived in Banyuwangi in the morning and we didn’t really want to wait in the evening, so we went to the messenger. And in the end we got in 25 hours. For money, that direct bus that with 2 transfers turned out the same way - $ 34.

And now a little more about our bus trip

What to expect from state buses traveling in Java? Firstly, they are very different, there are both ancient clunkers and high-quality modern buses, which are a pleasure to ride. We rode on the first and second :) Tickets are bought on the spot right on the bus or at the bus station. Locals speak a little English, but more often than not understanding us, they began to mutter something in their own language.

The path of Surabaya - Jakarta (Jakarta) was the longest, 17 hours. We were waiting for soft comfortable seats, falling off back, places for suitcases and curtains on the windows so that the sun would not interfere.

Most likely we overpaid for a ticket to Probolinggo, but we were thrown off a bit for a ticket to Jakarta. So here, as in the market, you have to bargain. We rarely saw this, usually in Asia there are no problems with fixed prices for intercity buses. A lot of helpers, bus dealers and musicians - everything is as usual in Asia :) Sometimes unobtrusive music plays or a film is shown on TV.

What else can I say - we profuka laptop. At one of the stops between Surabaya and Jakarta, while we, like everyone on our bus, had lunch in a cafe, some scoundrel pulled one of our laptops out of a backpack, put a thick magazine in his place, and was like that. Of course, we ourselves are to blame for leaving a valuable thing unattended, so you can only blame yourself. A couple of days later we already bought a new laptop, but the unpleasant residue from the bus trip on friendly Java remained. Having discovered the loss, we asked one of the passengers to call the police. After a couple of minutes, we drove to the station, the police searched every bag, but found nothing. The thief, having stolen a laptop, probably never returned to the bus. The passengers of our bus were very sympathetic to us, eagerly helped the police in the search and calmly reacted to an unforeseen delay on the way. In short, getting out of transport not even for long, take all your valuables with you. And this story will be a science for us, otherwise we, having traveled all Sri Lanka by bus and sailing on Philippines ferries, completely relaxed and stopped being on guard. Like, everything was always tiptop, we didn’t expect the setup from Indonesia, oh we didn’t. But now again we will be on the line, there is nothing to relax :)

Jakarta is like Moscow in terms of population, and its territory is several times smaller and there are no high-rise sleeping areas. As all people are placed in 1-3-story buildings, I don’t know. Apparently the point is the high density of residents inside the apartments. The city center is built up with skyscrapers and is quite modern, and around - endless 1-3-story house-huts. In skyscrapers, banks, large corporations, a bunch of licked shopping centers (though some inside look half-closed and absolutely not visited). Instead of the subway, an air-conditioned transjakarta bus runs here. Buses run along several lines. The stops are similar to mini metro stations with ticket offices and turnstiles. Payment once at the entrance, transfers to other lines are free. You can arrange a bus tour and see how the local sculptors make fun of the inhabitants. Each sculpture is full of pathos: a man incredibly bent forward carries a dish of fire (the local nickname is “pizza man”), a chariot harnessed by horses rushes forward at an incredible speed (to emphasize speed, some of the horses are made mesh-fire, as if shot in a shot). Fantasy works. Many statues of policemen with a baton and seriously-edifying face of Uncle Stepa.

Drive from Jakarta to Bali for about a day. 12 hours to Surabaya (by train or road the same way), 6 to the ferry, the rest by ferry, transfers and waiting. In order not to leave the Jakarta metropolis, I take a train ticket to Surabaya, almost across Java for $ 4.5. The sitting carriage is similar to Chinese, but people are more decent than in China, both of my neighbors spoke English, but the density of people is higher, so by night the aisles were occupied by Indonesians sleeping in sitting poses. I have nowhere to put my foot on. You can go over the top of the back of the seats, where there are free corners to put your foot. And not some homeless people sleep in the aisle - ordinary cleanly dressed people who did not get a ticket with a seat. In some strange way, merchants also operate on this train, including the sale of rather large Muslim black carpets with gold embroidery of Arabic script. There is no problem with food and it is half the price than in eateries.

You can sleep while sitting on a non-reclining chair only sideways, and the train was late for 4 hours. In general, it would be better to hitchhike.

Surabaya is also a big city. There is a traffic jam on the highway, which local schoolchildren are trying to unload, indicating to drivers where to get off the highway to get around the traffic jam and getting a thousand rupees from the driver for it. Drive back to the track, however, is also not fast. A detour of a traffic jam takes the same time as standing in it, so we returned to the track surrounded by the same cars that we wanted to overtake.

After a fork in the east of the island, the track is free. The hitchhiking is very good - I could not stand for more than three minutes. Truck drivers, after twenty minutes, stop feeding me (it’s clear: I stood on the highway, I’m completely hungry) and do not even allow me to pay for myself. But once I managed to pay: the price was half as much as in Sumatra or Jakarta. Moreover, the dishes are one hundred percent edible - the fish and ham, familiar from Sumatra, fried to the state of a mummy, were replaced by much more delicious dishes. The most enjoyable afternoon drink is es jeruk  lemon / mandarin, sugar and ice. After a red-hot cabin, I want to drink to the bottom and sit for a long time, melting pieces of ice remaining in the mouth of the glass in the mouth.

East Java is a fruit paradise. Durians, rambutans, watermelons and mangosteen in many roadside shops compete with the usual mandarins, bananas and pineapples. Prices are obscene.
A car ferry leaves about five kilometers south of the city of Banyuvangi. I leave the city at night. There’s a steady stream of motorcyclists on the road, and every tenth one stops and tries to find out what my problems are, haven’t I found the bus station? At the same time, each three or three people on a motorcycle: there’s nowhere to give a ride, but they prevent the truck from stopping. In the end, I am driven by a tuned truck with blue dimensions, which for some fundamental reason does not accelerate more than 25 kilometers per hour. Moreover, the motor pulls well: in a steep climb and downhill again - twenty-five.

The ferry between Java and Bali in the strait constantly turns around and I can’t stand in utah at all - I just switched and stood looking forward, suddenly the engines started working and you were on the tank. In the dark, however, nothing special is visible.

By midnight, having calculated that I would drive a “twenty-five-kilometer” truck until morning, I would leave and was ready to look for a tent place in the wet grass under palm trees. But the next car takes me straight to Kuta, and also, for the first time in Indonesia, a jeep picked me up on the road. The driver works as a jeweler, speaks English and is educated. He asks me how things are with the mafia in Russia. I have to explain to him in which cabinets the mafia works in our country. The driver says that in Indonesia everything is much simpler.

There was no forest around Kuta, I put up a tent on the city beach and fall asleep.
