The Cinque Terre is a Ligurian time machine. Vernazza

Today we bring to your attention of five virtual tours dedicated to an amazing place on the map of Italy - Cinque Terre. During this week, a new city will appear on our website every day and on Friday March 27th all five cities of the “Five Lands” will be available for viewing.

And now a few facts about the Cinque Terra:

A dozen kilometers of rocky coasts and five settlements: either cities or villages. Why do tourists from all over the world come here? Let's try to figure it out.

Would you like to be in a place where colorful houses climb cliffs, vineyards stretch out on the slopes, and the emerald sea splashes below? Where there are no cars, but many boats? Where can you endlessly wander through the narrow medieval streets? There is such a place: the Cinque Terre Nature Reserve (Five Lands) on the Ligurian coast of Italy.

Five lands are five tiny towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. Each of them has its own recognizable face and does not look like the other.

Since 1997, the Cinque Terre National Park has been protected by UNESCO. Instead of the usual parked cars you will see the folded boats. The sea washing the Ligurian coast is considered one of the cleanest in the Mediterranean. Over the decade and a half of the existence of the national park, marine life has been restored here, which attracts not only beach tourists, but also divers.

You can get to the park by water, by boat, by a small boat, or by rail. At the same time, the train goes through the tunnel almost all the time, which makes the trip on it look like a trip on the subway. The composition comes to the surface only at stations, so as not to violate the beauty of the natural landscape.

The largest city, Riomaggiore, was founded at the beginning of the 13th century. Its population is about 1700 people. Here begins (or ends, depending on where you are going from) the famous Road of Love, which I will talk about below. In addition, Riomaggiore is famous for its wine. However, this can be said about each of these five settlements.

Between the towns created hiking trails. Distances are not very large, but if you decide to go along them, keep in mind that you will have to go along mountain paths, and it will take much longer to overcome them than on flat terrain. To warm up, you can start with Via del Amor: Roads of Love, connecting Riomaggiore and Manarola - a city with a population of 450 people, which preserved medieval fortifications that protected residents from pirates.

Here is one of the legends that can be heard about this place. Once upon a time, young men from Manarola went for water to a stream flowing at Riomaggiore. As usual in ancient legends, the inhabitants were at enmity with each other. One of the young men met a beautiful girl from Riomaggiore at the stream, and they, having fallen in love with each other, began to secretly meet. The girl’s brothers found out about this and locked her in the house. She got out and ran to her lover, but their meeting ended tragically: both of them slipped and fell from the rocks into the sea. Since then, residents have ceased contention and live in peace, and the road was called Via del Amor. The 2011 flood severely damaged the Cinque Terre, but now almost all of its consequences have been eliminated. Unfortunately, landslides and rockfalls often lead to the fact that the road is closed.

If you find yourself in Manarola - go along the Via del Amor, remember the ancient legend. And when evening catches you - the sunset is best to meet on the mountain: a great view is not without reason widely circulated on postcards. In addition, there is one curious attraction in Manarola: a boat elevator. Raising the boat from a tiny stone cove, it is suspended on a block and pulled up to put on the square.

Corniglia is the smallest town of the "five" (245 inhabitants), as well as the only one that does not have access to the sea, as it is located on the top of the mountain. To get here, you need to climb the high stairs (which is probably why there are fewer tourists). But if you overcome a steep climb, the reward will be a beautiful panoramic view from the observation deck, and a walk along the narrow streets will give you pleasure even on a hot day. Corniglia is famous not only for its vineyards, but also for its unusual way of delivering harvested crops. Steep slopes are too tough for motor vehicles, so grapes are transported on a monorail device resembling a motorcycle riding a roller coaster.

Vernazza is the pearl of the Cinque Terre, the most picturesque of the five cities. The beautiful Margarita of Antioch church, built at the beginning of the 14th century, is adjacent to the Belfort tower and the ruins of a castle dating back to the 11th century. On the square overlooking the bay, there are many restaurants of Italian cuisine. A little more than 1000 people live in Vernazza.

And finally, Founded in 1056, Monterosso al Mare (population 1563 people) differs from its brethren by the presence of a sandy beach, which attracts tourists here. If you turn to the side, then after 600 meters you will find yourself in the old city. There is also a small beach, and also begins a hiking trail to Vernazza.

In one of my past trips, I happened to walk her on foot. I walked with great pleasure, but my companions refused to repeat the trip. However, even untrained tourists are quite capable of climbing the Hristoforo hill to the Capuchin monastery and the old castle built in the 16th century to protect against Saracen raids.

If you like romantic views, mountain walks, the sound of the sea and Italian cuisine - go to the Cinque Terre. But keep in mind that in season the number of lovers of beauty can be very large, so book hotels in advance.

Traveling between towns is most convenient by train, which leaves from La Spezia. It must be borne in mind that the Italian sun and carefree floating in the air make the schedule unnecessary, and trains can be late or arrive earlier. For lovers of leisurely walking trips organized walking routes of varying difficulty, to overcome the longest (40 kilometers) experienced traveler will need at least 12 hours. The short road between all five towns takes about 5 hours, but I have not yet met anyone who walked all five at a time. And how not to stop for a meal in cozy restaurants? Haste is inappropriate here!

In these parts you will not find luxurious hotels and large restaurants; here you have your own rules and laws. But the hospitality of people who paint their houses in bright colors, the amazing natural beauty of Liguria, and the feeling of time travel are the main treasures of the Cinque Terre.

Vernazza is a small town in the Italian province of Spezia, in the Liguria region, one of the five that make up the Italian National Park (Cinque Terre). The picturesque cliffs surrounding a small bay, colorful houses closely clinging to each other on the very shore of the sea, the calm, even pacified atmosphere of this place will not leave indifferent any tourist. Many who have been here claim that Vernazza is the very romantic, vibrant, cheerful Italy that they dreamed of seeing.

The settlement on the site of the modern city of Vernazza arose in the era of the Roman Empire and until the end of the 13th century was jointly owned by three powerful and noble families. From those times in the town there are many ancient architectural buildings that are adjacent to the streets of Vernazza with modern buildings. However, such a neighborhood does not destroy the picture of universal integrity and harmony, but only enhances the impression.

Now in Vernazza lives no more than a thousand people, so you can call it not only the most beautiful, but also the quietest town in the Cinque Terre. Since Vernazza is part of the national park, cars are not allowed here. Such a ban has a beneficial effect on local ecology - it is difficult to find cleaner air somewhere in Italy.

Beaches and Attractions

Few people come to Vernazza for a beach holiday, so there are only two beaches in the city, and even those are very small. One of them is located right in the center of the city, the other, a little more - a 5-10 minute walk from the first, outside Vernazza. To get to the second beach, you need to go through the cave, which is located near the main square of the city. On the pier by the beach, you can rent a yacht or boat and take an exciting boat trip.

Vernazza is famous not only for its beautiful nature, clean air and gentle sea. Of particular interest are its architectural attractions, the main of which is the Bastione Belforte tower at the Castle of Doria (Castello dei Doria), built in the XI century. The tower is a recognized symbol of the city; its images are often placed on souvenirs. Tours are regularly held around the castle and the tower, and magnificent panoramas open from viewing platforms located there.
Of the religious monuments of architecture, the most famous church, built in honor of St. Margarita of Antioch in 1318 (Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Margherita d’Antiochia).

It is built in the Ligurian Gothic style and is crowned with an octagonal tower. True, she did not preserve the original appearance due to alterations and extensions made over hundreds of years.
Opposite the church of Margarita of Antioch, there is an old Palace with galleries, where residents of Vernazza most often make appointments. Not far from it is Reggio Cathedral (Santuario di Nostra Signora di Reggio), built in the XI century and dedicated to the highly revered image of the Black Madonna in Italy.

True, to get there, you will have to overcome a rather steep climb, but the unique attraction is worth it.

  • Hot tours   all over the world
  • They say that Vernazza is the most beautiful city of the Cinque Terre. In fact, it’s too difficult to identify the very corner of this blessed region of Liguria: everything here delights you - the azure color of the sea, and formidable overhanging rocks, and bright houses, like patches on a blanket that painted this marvelous region with splashing colorful paints.

    How to get there

Vernazza, as well as the other four villages of the Cinque Terre National Park, can be reached on foot - along a beautiful trail along the sea. And also by train - for example, from La Spezia in twenty minutes.

    Beaches

Despite the fact that everyone doesn’t come to the Five Lands Reserve for swimming, there are beaches in Vernazza where you can at least freshen up. The first, small, lies in the very center of the city. The larger beach is located a little outside the city (well, on the scale of these miniature villages outside it means 5-10 minutes walk). You can get there through the cave in the rock, which is located near the main square.

    Attractions and attractions of Vernazza

The main attraction of Vernazza is its landscapes, the best of which open from pedestrian paths laid along the sea through all the villages of the Cinve Terre. But in Vernazza itself there is something to see. For example, the Church of St. Margarita of Antioch from 11-12 centuries. Built in the Romanesque style, in 1750 it was rebuilt in the Baroque tradition, and in 1970, after a major reconstruction, it returned to its almost original form. Opposite the temple stands the Palace with galleries (not art, but, so to speak, architectural elements). This is a favorite meeting place for citizens.

The Belforte Tower is considered a symbol of the village, its image is printed literally on every postcard and magnet.

It is worth visiting the church of St. Francis of the 17th century, which adjoins the ancient walls and tower of the 16th century. Even more ancient sights in Vernazza are the Belfort tower and the 11th-century Doria castle. It offers an amazing panorama of the city and its surroundings for only 2 EUR. The castle tower is considered a symbol of the village at all, its image is printed literally on every postcard and magnet.

Finally, the Cathedral of the Black Madonna (Reggio), built in the 11th century. Here is a revered image of the face of the Black Madonna.

Rapallo - the city of ancient cathedrals and Portovenere - the pearl of the Ligurian coast, listed by UNESCO, is waiting for its guests. Arma di Tajia will appeal to family tourists for a gently sloping beach and calm waters, lovers of evening entertainment should pay attention to Bordighera and Pietra Ligure, and romantics - to Lerici and Sestri Levante. Vernazza City (Italy)

Vernazza is a small town in northwestern Italy in the province of La Spezia. This is an unusually picturesque place: colorful houses seem to climb rocks, a beautiful harbor with emerald water and boats, an ancient castle on a cliff and an old church by the sea. Vernazza is one of the most beautiful coastal towns of Liguria, a small fishing village that completely conveys the atmosphere of Italy.

In October 2011, due to heavy rainfall, floods and landslides occurred here. This charming town was buried under a 4-meter layer of dirt and garbage, and all residents were evacuated. The damage from the elements amounted to more than 100 million euros. It took several months to return Vernazza to its former charm.

    Geography and climate

Vernazza is located on the coast of the Ligurian Sea between Genoa and Pisa. The town is part of the natural park and the famous cultural landscape of the Cinque Terre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cinque Terre, pressed to the coast of Liguria, is a charming postcard of bright houses, rocky beaches and quiet paths among the terraces covered with vineyards, olive trees and gardens. Vernazza is arguably the most beautiful place in Liguria.

In the 12th century, Vernazza became part of the Genoese Republic. The Genoese used the town as a bridgehead for the conquest of the Ligurian coast. Of the buildings and structures built by the Genoese, traces of city walls, a bastion and watch towers are still preserved.

During the reign of Bonaparte in France, Vernazza belonged to the French, and then was part of Sardinia. In 1861, the town became part of United Italy.

    sights

The main attraction of Vernazza is the city itself, which is very organically inscribed in the picturesque area of \u200b\u200bthe Ligurian Sea.

The Church of Santa Margherita de Antioquia is an old church with a bell tower and a beautiful tiled dome. No one knows for sure when the first church was built on this site. But perhaps the oldest building elements date back to the 11th century. The main architectural changes were made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The church is located near the sea and is part of a picturesque harbor.

Many believe that Vernazza has the most beautiful harbor on the Ligurian coast. Here you can not only take a boat for charming boat trips, but also enjoy the sun and sea on small local beaches.

Doria Castle is a bastion at the top of the cape that hangs over the sea and the city. This fortress was built in the 11th century to protect the coast from pirates. Fragments and a powerful tower are preserved from the castle. It is definitely worth going up to enjoy the beautiful view.
