Africa is a huge continent that is second only to Eurasia in area. It is washed by oceans such as the Atlantic and Indian. The northeastern shores of Africa face the Red Sea, and the north - to the Mediterranean. This part of the world includes not only the mainland, but also the islands adjacent to it. The islands of Africa increase its area from 29.2 million square meters. km (the area occupied by the mainland) to 30.3 million square meters. km

Brief characteristics of the African islands

The most significant island in this part of the world is Madagascar. The Mozambique Channel shares it with the continent. Seychelles, popular with tourists, is located near the equator. Madeira, the Canary Islands, Socotra, Principe, Bioko and others also belong to Africa. The largest land area in the states of Sao Tome and Principe is Sao Tome, which borders the equator. The island is located in the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic). Its length is 48 km., And its width is 32 km. Nature, formed under the influence of the equatorial and tropical marine climate, attracts tourists from all over the world to the island. Its population is represented by Santo-men and Portuguese, using Portuguese.

The list of islands in Africa also includes Moheli or Mwali. This is the smallest island of those that form the Comoros. The island has poorly developed infrastructure and is sparsely populated. But there is the National Marine Park, which has no analogues. Therefore, fans of scuba diving try to get to the island of Moheli to admire the coral formations. An interesting piece of land is the island of Reunion. This is the overseas territory of France with a population of about 800 thousand people. Reunion is located east of Madagascar. Next to it are the Swahili Islands. The French managed to turn the island into their colony in 1665. By climate, it resembles Hawaii, as it is also located in a very hot spot on the planet.

A tropical piece of land belonging to Tanzania is Zanzibar. This is the main island of the archipelago of the same name. Zanzibar is the largest supplier of spices. The share of Zanzibar cloves in world exports is more than 70%. Therefore, a large half of the island is occupied by plantations of cloves, cinnamon and other spicy plants. The islands of Africa in the Arabian Sea (northwest of the Indian Ocean) are land areas in the Socotra archipelago. It is formed by 2 rocks and 4 islands.

Natural features

Different parts of Africa have a heterogeneous climate. The continent stretches from the subtropical northern zone to the subtropical southern, crossing the equator. The islands of Africa have diverse flora and fauna. There is a rich underwater world, beaches with white sand, impassable jungle and exotic animals.

Socotra is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean. Because of its landscape, the island is called a unique place on earth, there is no other place to find. It is enough to look at the photographs to understand that the local nature is unique. We have already written in our issues about many unusual places, but Socotora goes far beyond the usual concepts of what an unusual place is. So, we continue our series of articles about interesting places on the planet Earth. We have already talked about the most mysterious places on Earth, now we will visit the most unusual places. Socotra Island is unusual in the first place for its landscape, it can be taken as a decoration for a film about some extraterrestrial civilization, but believe me, such a beauty really exists. Everything else is also one of the most isolated places on the planet. Due to this arrangement, one third of Socotra's plants are endemic, they cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. Assume for a few seconds that a miracle happened and you suddenly woke up on this island. The first thing that comes to your mind is that you have lost your mind, or have fallen on another planet, or plunged into a completely different era in the history of the Earth. The latter option is most likely in the case of Socotra, geographically isolated from Africa for 6 million years. The island is replete with extremely rare species of flora and fauna, of which there are about seven hundred. Despite the harsh, hot and dry climate, amazing plant life flourishes here. Socotra Island is located 250 kilometers from Somalia and 340 from Yemen. The wide sandy beaches smoothly pass to the limestone plateau with many caves and mountains up to 1525 meters high. The name Socotra is translated from Sanskrit as the Island of Happiness. And one can agree with this - the crazy botanical charm adjoins here with silence, isolation and huge quiet beaches. We now turn to the description of some unique plants and animals of the island that are protected by natural isolation, and therefore some of them have remained in the same form as 20 million years ago. Let's start with dracena cinnibaris, a tree called Dragon Blood, a source of valuable tar for varnishes, paints, and medicine. Dragon blood resin was also used in medieval ritual magic and alchemy. The branches of these trees expand to the sky and resemble many flying saucers at the bottom ... From above they look like huge mushrooms: On Socotra there is also the Desert Rose (adenium obesium) - a plant similar to a flowering one elephant foot: Dorstenia Giga - do not require any soil at all and immerses its roots directly in bare rock: Among the interesting plants of Socotra there is a strange and extremely rare Cucumber Tree (dendrosicyos socotranum). Despite the island’s population of approximately 40,000, the Yemeni government built the first roads here only 2 years ago, after negotiations with UNESCO, which declared Socotra a World Heritage Site. It is a quiet and peaceful enclave amid a turbulent world. If you decide

Ambergris Cay (Belize) is the largest island of almost two hundred islands in Belize and the main attraction for many travelers, especially diving enthusiasts. Kay means "island", and the name "Ambergris" appeared due to large pieces of ambergris (a product of the vital activity of migratory whales), which were previously nailed to the local coast.

Tourist popularity has come to the island relatively recently, so nature has preserved its pristine beauty, almost untouched by civilization.

The coastline of the island is protected by the Barrier Reef, without which this small piece of land in the ocean could not exist. The Barrier Reef serves as a natural breakwater and, of course, the largest attraction. The reef is located approximately two kilometers from the coast of the island. The amazingly clear water that separates the island from the reef provides countless opportunities for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. Diving into the dazzling turquoise ocean waters is a fabulous journey among colorful coral canyons and underwater caves, watching the life of marine life.

Madagascar is the largest island off the coast of Africa and throughout the Indian Ocean. Very often it is called a kind of miniature mainland. This is due to the fact that its flora and fauna is very different from that which exists on the African continent. Many of their representatives are found only here. Moreover, local landscapes are unique and are not repeated anywhere else on the planet. A few millennia ago, it was part of a vast continent known as Gondwana, which split over time. As a result, Africa, Antarctica and Madagascar itself were formed. Now the largest island in Africa is separated from the main continent by the Strait of Mozambique, whose width is about 300 kilometers.

The local landscape is diverse. Most of the territory is a plateau. In some areas it rises above sea level to a height of 2876 meters. Near the city of Antananarivo there are Ankaratro mountains, the maximum height of which is 2643 meters. Africa's largest island also boasts its fertile plains. They are located on the west and east coasts. All local rivers flow into and flow from east to west. Although not many, they annually attract a huge number of tourists by the abundance of their waterfalls and picturesque landscapes.

The best time to visit the largest island in Africa is the period from March to April. It is recommended to go to the central part from November to March. This is due to the specifics of the local climate. The fact is that there are wet and dry seasons. Heavy rains almost always rain on the east coast, and strong trade winds cause rain jets to fly almost horizontally, so no awnings and umbrellas can save them. The average winter temperature is 16, and summer - 34 degrees.

The democratic one, which was formed as a result of a military coup in 1975, occupies not only this large island of Africa, but also several small ones located nearby. The area of the country is just over 587 thousand km 2. The population of the state exceeds 14 million people. Most of them live in the largest cities, among which the aforementioned Antananarivo, as well as Tulear, Tuamasina, Mahajanga, Fianarantsoa and others. Official in the republic are two languages - French and gelding (one of the dialects of Malagasy). The president leads the country, and the prime minister is the head of government.

The first European to visit the largest on August 10, 1500, was the Portuguese Diego Diaz. On the new lands, travelers were engaged in robbery and murder, so as soon as they set off towards India, the local population breathed a sigh of relief. Unfortunately for him, six years later the next European expedition appeared on the island. Its representatives did not differ much from their predecessors, so most of the adult inhabitants of Madagascar were destined to become slaves. At different times, the Portuguese, French and British tried to gain a foothold here. In 1896, the island became the right to self-government, it was obtained in 1958, and independence was held in 1960.

Currently, Madagascar is a member of many world organizations, including the IMF, UN, WHO and others.

The black continent has been and remains one of the most romantic places in the world. Kenya, Zanzibar, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt annually attract thousands of travelers who want to see with their own eyes the life of the mainland, on which the first traces of man are found. Perhaps the most famous island in Africa is Madagascar, sung by famous sailors and modern filmmakers. But apart from it, there are hundreds of wonderful islands along the coast of the continent. Today about 10 very best.

Sao Tome

The island in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of West Africa was discovered by the Portuguese, who quickly adapted it for growing sugarcane. Today Sao Tome - a typical resort island with a Portuguese-speaking population. An international airport is open here and water links are established. The island, which is of volcanic origin, has great recreational resources. A huge variety of tropical fruits grows here, and the sea is warm and very clean.

Sal

Sal Island - The territory of Cape Verde, the birthplace of the famous singer Cesaria Evora. The island owes its name to the Portuguese word "salt", which most likely describes impeccably clean beaches.
