Valencia City Guide: Old Town Walk March 21st, 2013

A long time ago I didn’t appear here, I worked, sucked more than that quagmire. But I still finish what I started, that is, I will add the remaining routes of possible walks around the city. And today, next in turn is a walk through the Old City (Ciutat Vela), where the vast majority of the city's attractions are concentrated. So, let's hit the road!

During our many and long vacillations hanging out in the center, I have outlined for myself the optimal route for exploring the Old City, which I offer you.

Start with   Town Hall Square   (1), also sometimes called Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the city’s busiest place, where the vast majority of all buses come. On a huge triangle is a very beautiful City Hall (2), a fountain, a Tourist Center (3), where you can take a map of the city and many beautiful buildings around the perimeter.

If you move a little away from the square along Calle de Barcas, then you will find absolutely stunning bank of Valencia building   (4), which is a bit like the elaborately decorated bow of a ship.

We return back to the Square and move deep into the Old City, picking up a little to the left and soon find ourselves in the square in front of the Central Market. Central market   (65) A must visit, even if you have neither the desire nor the money to shop. The most lively, picturesque and bustling place of the city! Here you can also taste the famous local drink from the root of the chuf plant, orchata, at one of the counters, biting it with a fresh bun. Or sit in an outdoor cafe right at the main entrance (the cafe is a bar that runs along the wall of the market) and taste paellas and Valencian wine.

Near the market building is perhaps the most famous building of the city - Silk exchange   (La Lonja de la Seda) (66), where the merchants of Valencia were stationed in the 15-16th centuries, when this city was a center of trade, successful and very rich. I strongly advise you to look inside - the interiors are incomparable!

Then we go through the maze of streets and find ourselves in the most unusual square of Valencia - Plaza Redonda or Round square   (62). This is an enclosed circular space with a fountain in the center and souvenir shops around. Well cafe, of course, here too. A glass of wine and tapas in this square is an absolute must.

We leave the square, exit onto Calle San Vicente and find ourselves on Queen's Square   (Plaza de la Reina). Here again, many magnificent buildings of the early 20th century on the sides and Cathedral   (39) at the end of the square. If you want, you can inspect it from the inside (admission is free) and climb the tower El migueletewith a beautiful view of the Old Town. True, this pleasure costs 4 euros. If there is no desire to pay, then pass by, in the next article I will write how to see the city of overland for free. :)

We go around the Cathedral on the left side and get on St. Mary's Square   (Plaza de la Virgen) - one of the three main squares of the Old Town and a meeting place for Valencians. In the center is an intricate fountain called Fountain of the Water Tribunal, which was erected in honor of the commission of the same name, which dealt with issues related to irrigation canals.

On the right hand, on the side of the Cathedral, is located Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Defender of the disadvantaged   (Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados) (38) is a sacred place for all the inhabitants of Valencia, since it is here that the image of this Virgin, the patron saint of the city, is located.

There are a lot of cafes on the square where you can soak up the sun and knock over a cup of coffee. If your appetite has already woken up by then, you can take a walk a little further, along the street Santa Ana de Murallos and in the middle of the quarter there will be a super budget cafe on the left hand (Spanish fast food) 100 montaditos, where you can have a good snack with sandwiches and salad, washed down with a good table wine. On Wednesdays and Sundays, all meals and drinks for 1 euro are virtually free. :) On the same street you can find an excellent dessert, having glanced at one of the 4-5 ice cream parlors.

We return to Virgo Square and, turning left (if you go from the cafe) or right (if you go from the square), we find ourselves on Almoin Square   (Plaza de la Almoina) (41), where the remains of Roman buildings are visible in a glass-covered pit. Here at Plaza de la Almoina, 4 is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house, which is known as Knitted House   (43) or Casa Sancho thanks to an unusual, as if knitted design of the facade.

Now you have two options - you can return to the square and go down to the Turia gardens along Santa Ana de Murallos street and take a walk around this part of the Old Town to Tetuan Square. On the way, you will see the powerful Serranos Towers (30), which were once one of the 12 gates to the city. Or you can go straight from Almoin Square and find yourself in the same Tetuan Square.

Tetuan Square   It is worth visiting for the sake of several monuments: the atmospheric complex of the Monastery of Santo Domingo (49) and the Palace of Cervello, which in the 19th century served as the royal residence.

We move on and find ourselves near two parks: parc de la Glorieta (Parque de la Glorieta) (54) with a huge collection of beautiful trees and plants and square Alfonso V the Generous   (Plaza de Alfonso V el Magnanimo) (56) in the center of which is a monument to King Jaime I of the Conqueror, and huge immense ficuses along the edges.

A little further towards Calle de Colon (Columbus street) there is an impressive monument, similar to the arch of triumph - puerta de la Mar portal   (Puerta de la Mar), a copy of the former Royal Gate, which were located in the fortress wall.

Now I advise you to take a walk along one of the main shopping streets of the city of Calle de Colon. If not for the sake of shopping, then at least "to gawk." And I advise you to complete the inspection of this part of the Old Town Bull Fighting Arena   (6) and North Station   (7) - a stunningly beautiful historic building that needs to be viewed both from the outside and, necessarily, from the inside!

During the Civil War, a hospital was located here, later the structure itself and the church adjacent to it were transferred to the museum, which was headed by Gonzalez Marty - a man who did a lot to develop the cultural institutions of Valencia.

In the museum you can see works of art from different eras - from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century: paintings, sculptures and much more. Especially valuable exhibits are the works of El Greco, Velazquez, Goya, Piranesi. You can also admire the iconostases, made in the Gothic style, and works of folk art.

Palace Government Palace (Generalidad)

A very beautiful palace, the construction of which began in the 15th century, was originally intended for deputies of the Kingdom of Valencia - their meetings were to be held here. Today it is the seat of the provincial government. Over the long years of its existence, the palace was repeatedly reconstructed. Of course, it was expanded, first eastern and then western towers were added. Now it is open for tourists. The architecture of the palace is a mixture of several styles - Gothic, Classicism, Renaissance, Herresco.

The Royal Hall, where you can see portraits of the rulers of Valencia, the old chapel and the Golden Hall, which got its name, thanks to the luxuriously decorated ceiling, makes a great impression on tourists. Also in the palace you can admire paintings, sculptures and other works of art. Next to the palace is Peanut Square, where a monument to the famous traveler Francisco Pizarro is erected, he was also famous for conquering the lands of the Incas.

Bullring Plaza de Toros

One of the largest bullfighting arenas in the country, and also an old one. At the same time, about 14 thousand spectators can watch the bulls and matadors here. The construction of the arena began in the 18th century, and various improvements were introduced over another 120 years. Today it is a beautiful building, made in the Baroque style, decorated in white and gold tones, with numerous enfilades. Of course, not everyone is attracted by a rather harsh sight when a person and a huge ferocious animal find themselves in the arena. But in any case, it’s worth a visit to the Plaza de Toros.

It seems that this place symbolizes the ancient Valencia. Here you can not only look at bullfighting, but also just go on excursions, visit the thematic museum, where photographs, costumes are exhibited in 4 rooms, there is even a cloak painted by Picasso himself. A ticket for the tour costs 7 euros for adults and 3 for small tourists.

Serranos Towers

To see the towers and gates of Serranos, you need to go to the northern part of the city. Once there were gates built by the ancient Romans. At the end of the 14th century, locals erected new ones. If you climb any of the old towers, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Valencia. They have long ceased to perform defensive functions, as they once were. For some time there were ceremonies.

In addition, inside the towers, in special cells, noble prisoners were kept. In 1936, the most valuable works of art from Madrid were brought here so that the powerful walls and concrete floor protect them from the effects of the bombing. On weekends and holidays, the towers can be visited for free. The rest of the time the entrance costs 2 euros.

Gate of Serranos

They were built in late 14th by the architect Pere Balaguer from gray limestone. These gates were the main entrance to the city, immediately the population was introduced to the decrees of the king. The gates also performed a defensive function, as they were part of the fortress wall surrounding the city. After the fire that occurred at the end of the 16th century, prison cells were arranged in the local towers. As a result, when the need for a fortress wall disappeared, it was demolished, and the tower and the gate survived.

During the Civil War, a bunker was built in the dungeon under the towers, where they stored works of art. Now the gates are again the main entrance to the city, there are also numerous celebrations. In the towers is the Maritime Museum, whose exhibits tell the story of the Royal Navy. Tourists can also climb to the observation deck and from there take pictures of Valencia.

People come here from all over the country to see amazing animals. The biopark has 3 thematic zones: Savannah, Equatorial Africa and Madagascar. Ministers treat animals very carefully - tourists are forbidden to take them with flash cameras so as not to scare them. And they keep here lions and white rhinos, giraffes and zebras, hippos and elephants, as well as many other representatives of the fauna - in conditions as close to natural as possible. Therefore, guests of the park are not allowed to feed animals - they should receive the same food as in the natural environment.

An impressive “Baobab Forest” was created from artificial trees. Children especially like funny lemurs, whose homeland is Madagascar. They are very sociable and friendly, they are drawn to meet tourists, to explore their things in search of something tasty. A ticket for adults costs 23.8 euros, discounts are provided for children and pensioners.

Cathedral

This is the main church of the city, built in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin. It is also called the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. It was erected in the 13-15 centuries and is a harmonious combination of several styles - Romanesque, Gothic, Neoclassical, Baroque ... The cathedral is famous, primarily because the Holy Grail was discovered here, the very existence of which for a long time seemed like a legend. This is the same cup from which Jesus Christ drank during the last supper.

It is difficult to find a shrine in Christianity. equal to this. A visit to the cathedral is included in the program of almost all city sightseeing tours. The shape of the church is cruciform, its length reaches almost 100 m, inside the cathedral are decorated with 15-century paintings made by both local painters and artists invited from Italy. During the Civil War, the cathedral was damaged by fire, and later it had to be restored.

Queen's Square

This is a very popular tourist destination. There is an area near the cathedral, and it is from here that you can appreciate the beauty of the famous Mikalet bell tower. People flock here to buy souvenirs and flowers, to sit in a small square, in the very "heart" of Valencia. It is from Queen's Square that you can go on excursions. At the disposal of city guests here are various types of transport. From horse-drawn carts imitating old carriages to comfortable air-conditioned tour buses.

Silk Exchange Lonja de la Seda

Once the most important thing for the inhabitants of Valencia was the production of silk and its sale. Noble ladies from all over Europe wanted to wear Valencian silk. In the second half of the 15th century, the Silk Exchange was built in the city, and in 18 this industry reached its peak. It is enough to say that about 300 silk masters worked in Valencia, and up to 25 thousand citizens were involved in the business. Four exchange buildings are built in the style of Gothic and Renaissance.

This is a prison where bankrupt merchants and thieves caught in the theft of silk were placed; the hall where the meetings of the Marine Consulate took place; Column Hall, as well as the Orange Courtyard. The main hall of the exchange was decorated like a garden of paradise, because it was believed that there is a temple of commerce. Today, the exchange buildings have been turned into a museum, and everyone can see them. On weekends and holidays admission is free, on other days you need to pay 2 euros for a ticket.

City Hall

City Hall is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. It consists of 2 combined buildings, one of them was built in the 18th century, the other in the 20th. The mayor's office was transferred to an older building (once it was a college for poor girls) in the mid-19th century, and subsequently the building was reconstructed and expanded. The facade of the city hall is crowned with a clock tower, there is also a beautiful balcony. From here, during ceremonial events, representatives of power structures turn to the townspeople. There is something to see inside. An Italian marble staircase leads to the upper floors.

One of the most beautiful rooms is the Crystal Hall. Light penetrates here through stained-glass windows; huge chandeliers made of Bohemian crystal also illuminate the hall. The walls are decorated with arches and marble figures. The semicircular Meeting Room, with its granite columns and bronze applications, also impresses. Also in the building of the Town Hall is the Historical Museum, which contains documents and other materials related to the most important events in the history of the city. Here you can get acquainted with the old plans of Valencia, see the banner of the 13th century, look at the portraits and busts of kings, furniture of past centuries.

Tourists can visit the City Hall from Monday to Friday, the entrance to the building is free. Of course, the inspection of the Conference Room will have to be postponed if any meetings are held there.

Gate Quart

Quart Gate was also part of the ramparts. Under the direction of the architect Pere Bonfil, they were built in the middle of the 15th century. The twin towers are made in the Gothic style and make you recall similar buildings in Naples. At different times, they had a different purpose, at one time they were even a women's prison.

The towers and gates survived during the course of numerous wars, however, shell traces remained on their walls. But tourists like to take pictures of these potholes, because birds nest here, even elegant parrots. You can visit the historical site every day except Monday. Ticket price - 2 euros, on weekends and on holidays the passage is free.

Marques Palace Dos Aguas

This palace gained fame, firstly because of its luxuriously decorated facade, and secondly because now the Museum of Ceramics is located here. The building was built in the 15th century for a noble Valencian family, but initially everything here looked much more modest. A courtyard, 3 buildings and a battlement - that’s the whole palace. In the middle of 18, the complex was rebuilt. Now he was called upon to emphasize the high origin and enormous wealth of the Marques of Dos Aguas.

New towers appeared, a portal made in the Rococo style, numerous sculptures of symbolic significance. After another 100 years, the new owner, who inherited the title of Marquis of Dos Aguas, ordered the interior of the palace to be re-decorated. Now it was possible Italian, French and Chinese motifs. In the second half of the 20th century, a new wing was built. Since 1949, the palace belongs to the state, and now the Museum of ceramics and luxury goods is open here.

In addition to historical information, here you can get a visual representation of urban traditions. In addition, archaeological finds are stored here, as well as several works by Picasso. Tourists admire the collection of old carriages. A ticket costs 3 euros, children are free of charge.

Albufera Natural Park

Here is a real paradise for birds. It is one of the largest theme parks in the Mediterranean. Albufera belongs to the protected natural areas, but tourists are also allowed here. The park has routes where guests can walk, climb observation platforms. A permanent exhibition is also organized. But you can’t enter the conservation area. Basically, birds live in the park, including waterfowl. Here you can see ducks, cranes, herons, storks.

It is especially nice that you can visit the park for free - you just need to get a pass. You can walk along the paths yourself, but it’s better to book a guided tour. So, in a short time you can see a large number of birds and hear a detailed story about them. Also, the guide will take you to a village lost in the depths of the forests, which has a bright national flavor. Here you can relax and eat. Especially pleasant is such a walk on hot days.

In addition, those who want to take a closer look at the waterfowl, as well as take great photos, can rent a boat. Especially beautiful pictures are taken at dawn and at sunset, when the sun's disk is low above the surface of the water.

Gardens of Turia Park

In Valencia, as in all of Spain, there is an unusual design decision - the mouths of dried rivers become promenades. The Turia River was recognized as dangerous for the city, because thanks to it, floods periodically occurred that threatened buildings. And, in the end, its channel was diverted beyond the boundaries of the village. In the same place where river water flowed before, they laid the green complex, which occupies about 100 hectares of fertile land. Of course, there is not one park, but several. Moreover, the climate in Spain is so hot that they managed to make a real tropical corner.

Baobabs grow, zebras and lions walk, hippos bask in the sun. This place can be dedicated all day. The length of the route from the end to the end of the Turia Gardens is 9 km, and along the way you will meet both fountains, and a lake, where you will find pleasure boats, playgrounds for young tourists, and attractions. The kids will be amazed by the 70 meter figure of the recumbent Gulliver. Those who wish to explore the Turia Gardens in a shorter time can rent bicycles. Beautiful photos are taken on ancient bridges - from here you can enjoy beautiful views, just like from a Ferris wheel.

Transport in the Gardens only moves along bridges, so even very young children can safely walk the rest of the territory. And lovers of flora will be happy to visit the Botanical Garden. Here you can see the whole variety of Mediterranean flora.

City of Arts and Sciences

This place is located next to the Turia Gardens, and is the pride of the country. Perhaps this is one of the largest Spanish projects in recent years. It is an entertainment and educational center. And in the old city, like Valencia, it seems like a real guest from the future. If you have time, you can visit all 5 buildings of the city. In one of them is the Opera House and the Museum of Art, in the other a Planetarium, a Laser Theater and a cinema, in the third - a garden and gallery, in the fourth - the Science Museum, in the fifth - the Oceanarium.

If you wish, you can even swim next to outlandish sea creatures. Everywhere you will be met by the technology of the future. It is especially recommended that the younger generation be brought here in order to arouse his interest in various spheres of human activity. It has been repeatedly noted that the guys, after visiting the city, revise their attitude to study and begin to bring good grades from school.

In addition to the described, in Valencia there are many more attractions. So it is advisable to come here at least for 3-4 days, or even for a week. But even in the short term you can do a lot, especially if you use the services of a guide and rent a car. It should also be remembered that the weather in Spain is warm almost all year round, and it is better to inspect monuments, parks and squares in the "low" season, not in the summer heat. At the same time, you can significantly save on hotel stays. Valencia is truly amazing, and it is waiting for you.

  7. After enjoying the atmosphere of science, we go further along calle la Nave and exit onto Plaza Alfonso, to the Spanish King El Magnanimo - Noble. A beautiful monument to the king on horseback. A very ancient plane tree with luxurious branches. Cool area!
The Palace of Justice adds a bit of officialdom - the Tribunal, the former palace of the Marquis de Scala.
  8. Having crossed the square, we exit to another beautiful square - Plaza Porta de la Mar, with a beautiful old gate to the city. We cross the road to the left onto the Gral Palanca and go left to Plaza Tetuan.
  9. In the direction of the movement, on the right, there will be a beautiful church of Santo Domingo, with sentry boxes and memorial tablets that fell in the Spanish wars. It was from this church, turned into barracks, that the tanks of the rebels came out during an attempted coup in Spain in 1981. Historically modern place!
  10. We pass to the end of Santo Domingo and exit right to the Royal Bridge (Puente del Real). We go to the bridge, look at the beautiful views that have opened, "greet" with statues of saints standing on the bridge. Of course, you can cross the bridge and go along the other side of the Turia “river”, but, by this moment, the camera will either end up charging or want to eat. Therefore, we get off the bridge, cross the road, and move on, on the left side of Pintor Lopez.
  11. We reach the Plaza Temple with the beautiful Temple Palace Monastery and the monument to H. Ribera. We turn left and go along the street from the river directly to the tower of the cathedral, that is, to Plaza de la Reina.
  12. The area is full of places where you can eat. There is an information point, and there is McDonald's, where you can recharge the camera without ordering anything serious.
  13. The cathedral is very beautiful, it has many treasures. The main one is a bowl of gold with agates, which, according to legend, was at the last supper. You can climb the cathedral tower of Migulet (Mon-Sat 10.00-12.30 and 16.30-19.30) with an impressive overview of the surroundings.
  14. Upon leaving the cathedral, through the Apostolic Gate, we find ourselves in the Plaza de la Virgen, where we admire the Government Palace, the church of Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados, and, of course, the beautiful "river fountain".
  15. From Plaza de la Virgen we go to the bright towering spire of the church of Santa Catalina and exit onto Plaza Lope de Vega. We cross the square directly and go along calle Trench to Avenida Marina Cristina.
  16. Turn right and go along the avenue (Avenida Marina Cristina) to three "global" objects: the huge building of the Central Market, the church of St. Ioannov (Iglesia de los Santes Juanes, 1368) and, opposite it, the UNESCO site - the Silk Exchange building. Be sure to go into the building - it is magnificent!
17. Then, along calle Bolseria we reach Plasa Tossal and turn left on calle Quart Caballeros. Our goal is the gate of the Quart Tower (Torres de Quart, 1444). Taking a picture at the gate of the tower, we understand that the "moment of truth" has arrived - there are no forces.
  There are two options:
  1. Take a taxi (7-9 euros) and get to the City of Art and Science, where you can take a walk without straining the sights, or watch a movie in the Hemisphere.
  2. Turn right and continue the heroic route along Guillem de Castro, going all the time "along the main", with a smooth turn of Guillem de Castro to the right, to the Serranos towers. The path lies past the Valencian Institute of Contemporary Art, the Carmelite Monastery and the Carmen Church.
  Have a nice trip!

We arrived in Valencia at 10 a.m. For an hour and a half we had a sightseeing tour of the city and then free time until sunset. Visiting Valencia on June 4. After a brief acquaintance with the city, we were left alone with him in Plaza Ayuntamiento (Ajuntament). We immediately decided to go to the aquarium, which is located in the City of Arts and Sciences, which is located at the bottom of the Turia River. The drained river. Now, at the place where it flowed, a beautiful alley with bridges, parks, flowerbeds and playgrounds was built.

In the City of Science and Art in Valencia, we were primarily interested in the oceanarium. This is one of the most interesting places that must be. The fact is that at one time we did not get into the Lisbon Oceanarium, but we really wanted to see the fish, stingrays and sharks. At Plaza Ayuntamiento, we decided to take a taxi to get there quickly, because apart from the Valencia Oceanarium, we wanted to get to know the city and see a few more sights. So, in order to catch a taxi, he had to be found. The issue was resolved very simply, we went to the policeman and simply asked “taksi”. Somehow, in broken English, he explained that a taxi in Valencia can be caught right on the road with a simple wave of his hand, after which he himself went to the side of the road and stopped the first car with checkers that got us. The driver was told Oceanography (Oceanografico), he nodded and we drove off. From Plaza Ayuntamiento to the aquarium, we drove about ten minutes and paid 7 euros on the counter. In general, traveling in Spanish cities by taxi is very convenient and not expensive.

First, we walked around the City of Arts and Sciences. Grandiose monumental futuristic techno-style buildings with a pool in the middle. The idea was to build something fundamental for a trip to the world of science, art and technology, thereby highlighting Valencia among other Spanish cities and attracting more tourists from all over the world. The City of Arts and Sciences of Valencia consists of five complexes:
   - Hemisferic, a huge hall where three audio-visual performances are designed using lasers and lighting equipment;
   - The interactive museum of Prince Filipe, which presents the evolution of life and modern technology;
   - greenhouse;
   - The Palace of Arts of Queen Sofia, where theatrical and musical performances are held;
   - oceanarium.

On the territory of the city of art and science.

A ticket to the Valencia Aquarium costs € 27.9 per person. It consists of several zones where you can look at the fish of the Red Sea, Coral reefs and animals of the Antarctic. The result - money wasted in vain, there is nothing to look at except sharks and stingrays.

You can’t swim in this pool. But what colorful performances are here.

After visiting the aquarium, we returned to Plaza Ayuntamiento in the same way and headed to the central city market. The market is huge, which is not there: jamon, and all kinds of sausages, sweets and fruit and vegetables. We needed only sweets.

Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary

No less interesting is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Intercessor in Valencia in Spain (Festividad de la Virgen de los Desamparados), which is held on the second Sunday of May. These days, Valencia wears traditional costumes and a statue of the Virgin Mary is taken out of the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin. It is carried through the skull throughout the old part of the city, sprinkling with flowers and petals. In the evening, the statue is returned back to the cathedral. The procession is chic and solemn. (A small remark: in the city they don’t carry the Virgo statue itself, but a copy of it). The Square of the Virgin Mary, on which stands the fountain "Rio Turia", is the center of the historical part of Valencia. In the center of Valencia, it's nice to just walk and stare at the historic buildings.

Copy of the Santo Calis Chapel. It holds a cup from which Jesus is said to have drunk during the Last Supper. This is the holy grail. The bowl is recognized by the Catholic Church as genuine on the basis of radiocarbon analysis, which showed that it is 2000 years old. This is where you definitely need to go.

Valencia in translation from Latin means "brave, courageous". Modern Valencia.

Valencia is also a beach resort, which has 200 km of well-equipped beaches.

Valencia is famous for its grand holidays. If you happen to visit this city from March 15 to 19, then you will catch the chic Fallas holiday (Las Fallas). This is a celebration of fire, fireworks and firecrackers. The city these days is literally on the ears, everywhere there is a roar and flashes of firecrackers. On the same days, a grand bullfighting is held at the Plaza de Toros, and people come off like on the last day.
