Features of the preparation of masters

After completing a four-year undergraduate course, the student makes a choice: to continue his studies for another two years or to complete his education. What are the benefits of the second stage of higher education and to whom is it “shown”?

To answer these questions, the main university of St. Petersburg holds Open Doors Days, at which faculties tell in detail what the SPbU master's program is. In 2017, events for applicants will start at the end of February and will continue until the end of June.

Benefits of a Master's Degree:

  • if desired, you can change the direction of study;
  • it is not necessary to start education immediately after completing a bachelor's degree;
  • the weight of the master's degree among employers, especially if it is supposed to work in a foreign company;
  • postgraduate studies and the opportunity to teach at a university are allowed only after graduating from a master's program;
  • the training period is less than for a bachelor's degree, and is two years.

St. Petersburg State University, master's degree: faculties and areas of study

The faculty at the university is a structural subdivision that unites a number of smaller subdivisions - departments and laboratories. Choosing a direction, the applicant first of all looks at the list of faculties. St Petersburg University (as of February 2017) includes 17 such structural units. You can get acquainted with the features of training, teachers and ongoing research on the specialized websites of the departments.

The most famous faculty is the Faculty of Law. The idea to teach experts in law at St Petersburg University belonged to Peter the Great.

  • physical and mathematical sciences and computer technologies;
  • natural Sciences;
  • social Sciences;
  • humanitarian sciences;
  • sciences of art and culture.

The key features of the master's program are the combination of the classical traditions of higher education with advanced scientific achievements, a carefully selected and qualified team of teachers, the opportunity to conduct their own research using modern equipment, and internships at foreign universities.

How to proceed

Admission to the university is handled by a special unit - the admissions committee. At the beginning of each academic year, the rules for the competitive selection of applicants are developed, and the list of areas for which enrollment will be made is officially announced.

Admission to the master's program at St Petersburg University begins with the collection of documents. You will need:

  • application (can be filled out through the site);

You can submit materials through the "Personal Account", send them by postal service or bring them in person. The main thing is to meet the deadlines. The information system of the SPbU Applicant website starts working on March 1, although the official admission campaign starts on July 3. The deadline for registration of documents for the full-time form is July 20 (until 18:00), for part-time - September 12 (also until 18:00).

Master's program at St Petersburg University is characterized by the fact that the entrance exam for most areas is held in the form of a portfolio competition. The candidate for undergraduate prepares the following materials:

Distance Learning Opportunities

Unfortunately, students will not be able to study without moving to the city on the Neva, as part-time master's programs at St Petersburg University are not provided.
