In this article, I will tell you about public transport in Gran Canaria, its cost, and how to get from the island's capital to resorts in its south. Public transport in Gran Canaria is represented by intercity buses (Spanish: Guagua) and is as well developed as it is. In Gran Canaria, almost half of the total population of the Canary Archipelago is concentrated, which dictated the need for a modern and well-functioning public transport. Buses connect the capital of the island of Las Palmas and the airport in the north with the resorts of the sunny south.

City Buses in Las Palmas

Most likely, you do not need buses to travel around the city of Las Palmas: tourists prefer to settle in the very center of the city or in the area of \u200b\u200bPlaya de las Canteras beach. For example, a hotel on the first line of the Hotel Concorde or the NH Imperial Playa. However, if you still have to use public transportation in Las Palmas, then the official Las Palmas public transport website Guaguas.com will come to your aid. On the site you can get directions, see ticket sales points and public transport schedules.

For example, if you need to travel from Playa de las Canteras beach (stop Tomas Miller) to the Columbus Museum (stop Plaza de las ranas), then you need bus number 12.

All in Las Palmas works 40 day routes  - urban and suburban, as well as 3 night routes  - L1, L2, L3. A detailed map of all bus routes of the city can be found below. The fare on the bus is 1.4 Euro for 1 trip. In order to save money, you can also buy a contactless travel card, with which 2 trips will cost 2.4 Euros, and 10 trips - 8.5 Euros. Tickets can be bought from the driver, and tickets can only be purchased at sales offices (in Santa Catalina Park, Avda. Rafael Cabrera, Plaza de la Constitución, 5 bajo, Sor Simona, 44).

A detailed map of bus routes in Las Palmas and its suburbs is given below.

Intercity Buses from Las Palmas to South Resorts

Intercity Buses  depart from two bus stations in Las Palmas: with bus station santa catalina  (address: Santa Catalina Park), located next to the port, and with bus stations San Telmo  (address: Avda. Rafael Cabrera) near the Columbus Museum. Buses from Las Palmas Airport also arrive at these bus stations. Ticket offices at the San Telmo Bus Station are open on weekdays from 07:00 to 20:00, and on weekends from 08:00 to 13:00.

The timetable and routes for intercity buses from Las Palmas can be conveniently viewed on the Globalsu.net website. Buses run from approximately 06:00 to 20:00, there are no night intercity buses. Buses are very comfortable and air-conditioned. The following routes connect the capital of the island with the southern resorts:

  • Bus No. 1: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria -
  • Bus number 5: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria -
  • Bus 91: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - Puerto de Mogan (via Gran Canaria Airport)

There are also bus routes running between the southern resorts without checking into the capital of the island:

  • Route 32: Puerto de Mogan - Playa del Ingles
  • Route 33: Playa del Ingles - Puerto Rico - Puerto de Mogan
  • Route 39: Playa del Ingles - Playa de Amadores
  • Route 45: Bahia Feliz - Palmitos Park
  • Route 70: Palmitos Park - Puerto Rico

Tickets for intercity buses are bought from the driver. The ticket price depends on the number of kilometers that you will travel. For example, the fare on the segment Gran Canaria Airport - Faro de Maspalomas will be 4.05 Euro per person.

Taxi in Gran Canaria

Official taxis in Gran Canaria - White Mercedes-equipped with taximeters. Tariffs are regulated at the state level. Always ask the driver for a check after a taxi ride (in Spanish “un recibo”). A check will come in handy if you forget something in a taxi.

Many vacationers who for some reason do not want to rent a car and go around the island with a guided tour book a driver with a car for the whole day. This pleasure is worth about 200 Euro per day.

If you do not want to use local taxis and you need to leave at a certain time, for example, to the airport, then I advise you on the Internet. Tourists like this type of transfer, because no need to wait for the car and worry about having time to get to the airport.

How to leave from one Canary island to another?

Option number 1. The plane from the island of Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands are connected by regular flights, thanks to the carriers Binter and CanaryFly. Flights between islands are often cheaper than ferries, so I recommend paying attention to those who are not afraid of turboprop aircraft. Approximate prices for flights can be found in the table below. Please note that CanaryFly flights between the islands of the archipelago arrive at Tenerife North Airport, not at Tenerife South. It is better to book flights in advance in order to catch the best price.

Option number 2. Ferry from the island of Gran Canaria

The most important ports of the island: Puerto de la Luz (in Las Palmas), Arginengine, Arinaga. For passenger traffic, the ports of Puerto de la Luz and Purto de las Nieves in the municipality of Agaete in Las Palmas are used.

The most popular sea carriers between the Canary Islands are Fred Olsen Express, Naviera Armas and Transmediterranea. On ferries you can travel with a car. Please note when purchasing tickets on the website so that you do not have the “Residente en Canarias” (Canary Islands resident) option selected. Tickets for residents are sold at a discount of 75% of the regular price, and if you mistakenly buy such a ticket for yourself, it will naturally be invalid. Tickets are sold both online and at the box office in the port of Puerto de la Luz.

Point of departure Destination Travel time Two-way ticket price in Euro
Gran Canaria (Las Palmas) Tenerife (Santa Cruz) 80 minutes 68 Euro
Gran Canaria (Las Palmas) La Gomera (San Sebastian de la Gomera) with a connection in Tenerife 2 hours 10 minutes 126 Euro

Car rental in Gran Canaria

In Gran Canaria, there are roads framing the whole island and going to the mountainous areas in the center of the island. The first roads appeared on the island in the late 20th century around its capital - Las Palmas. Highways of the island: GC1, GC2 and GC3. In addition to them, there are highways with a dividing strip GC4 and GC5. The actual cost of a liter of gasoline is 1.22 Euro. The maximum speed on the highway is 120 km / h, in settlements - 60 km / h.

Renting a car will give you a certain degree of freedom: you can travel without excursion to the most remote corners of the island of Gran Canaria: Tamadaba National Park in the north of the island, authentic villages with the native inhabitants of Arucas island, Firgas, Teror, Mount Roque Nublo, Pico de las Nieves volcano . The island of Gran Canaria is divided by a volcano into 2 climatic zones, for good reason it is called. To make a complete picture of the island, it is better to come here on vacation for 7-10 days and travel around the island without haste.

The roads in Gran Canaria are winding, with a serpentine, so only experienced drivers can ride them. The roads on the island are quite narrow, they have many sharp turns. Locals advise turning off the music while driving in order to hear the signal of an approaching car in time (in blind turns, the car honks to let them know about themselves). It is strictly forbidden to drink at the wheel - tourists are often checked by the police, and for some glass of wine you can get a huge fine!

At reliable  agencies of official dealers of Aeroflot, S7, Ural Airlines and all known airlines of the world.

If you decide to spend your vacation in Gran Canaria, it is not so important that you fly on your own or through an agency. Even the purpose of your trip is limited only to visits to the beach and tasting of joys on the "All inclusive" system - sooner or later the beach may get bored, and there will be a question about moving around the island or a desire to visit the neighboring one.

For most independent travelers, acquaintance with Canaryan public transport begins at the door the airport, it is from here that we will begin to consider possible routes.

The bus stop itself is located very close to the exit from the terminal building: after receiving the luggage, you should go up one floor and information boards will lead you directly to it. It should be noted that the "bus" in Canary is called "guagua", however, if you say autobus or bus you will, of course, understand. You can pay for the fare as the driver himself, or to purchase a ticket in the machine located nearby. Buses connecting the airport with the capital of the island or the south are somewhat different from conventional public transport. They are equipped with special compartments where you can place your luggage. All intercity bus services are provided by Global.

Direction "North"

For those who wish to go north to the capital of Las Palmas, you should use buses №60   or №91 . In the city of Las Palmas there are two bus stations: San Telmo, located in the center of the capital, and Santa Catalina, which is located near the port of Canteras.

If the bus №60   - This is a direct branch on the route “Airport - Las Palmas”, the route №91   connects the south of the island (Playa del Cura) with the capital. Please note that the bus may arrive at the Airport stop already full. Bus fare 3€ , you can find out more about travel prices here. In addition to regular tariffs, the company offers special tourist cards that make it possible to receive 20% discount  for a fare or pay for several trips at competitive prices. (You can find out more at the San Telmo station or right at the airport).

Direction "South"

Buses to the south of the island are three routes: №66 , №90   and already known to us №91 .

№66   provides direct communication between the airport and the most tourist center of Maspalomas and Playa Ingles; №90   runs along the coast, combining Telde and Faro de Maspalomas, and №91   extends the route №66   to Puerto Rico and Amadores, connecting the south with the island's capital.

You can download schedule  most popular routes.

Las Palmas City Transportprovided by another transport company, timetables and fares can be found on the carrier’s website at www.guaguas.com. The fare for the city is 1,40€   (You can also pay at the driver’s entrance), to save money, you can purchase a subscription for 2 or 10 trips at the stations of San Telmo or Santa Catalina.

Alternative transport: taxi or car rental

Amazing but taxi  Gran Canaria is cheaper than Madrid. A trip to the center of the capital will cost you about 25-35 €, depending on the time of day and day of the week (at night and on weekends it is more expensive). The fare to the south is a little more expensive: to San Agustin 30-35 €, Playa Ingles 30-37 €, Puerto Rico 49-60 €, the farthest and most expensive is Puerto de Mogan, about 63-77 €. You can easily find a taxi stop when leaving the airport, usually there is always a small queue near the cars. When landing, pay attention to the inclusion of the counter. The Spaniards do not have the habit of deceiving their tourists, but still, when paying for travel, be sure to demand a check as a guarantee of the right price. On the check is always indicated the machine code and time, to check if you were correctly counted in case of doubt is quite simple.

About car rental  in Spain, we already wrote, so is it worth you to rent a car or get by public transport? To the general information about Spanish traffic rules it is worth adding a little Canarian specificity:

The roads are rather narrow, with sharp turns. Recommendation: do not turn on loud music and ride in the mountains with windows open. At sharp bends with poor visibility, drivers warn of their approach with a sound signal;

The Canary driving style itself is quite aggressive compared to Madrid. Here you can see overtaking on the right or turning from the left row to the right without turning on;

Do not drive, having drunk even a glass of beer. In tourist areas, monitoring the level of alcohol is almost every 10 km, and fines in Spain are very large. Arucas is famous for its special control, apparently due to the Roma factory located in the neighborhood.

Tenerife Buses at Tenerife South Airport

TITSA green buses are a cheap and convenient way to get around Tenerife. By bus from Las Americas you can get directly to the capital, southern and northern airports, Puerto de La Cruz, the Teide volcano. Well, with one change - to any, even the most remote corner of Tenerife.

Bono ticket designs can be different. On the reverse side you can see the balance of funds. All buses in Tenerife run on schedule. It can be downloaded from the link at the top of the page or printed in print form at bus stations. Bono tickets are also sold there - prepaid magnetic cards, a very useful thing. If you pay for the fare with such a card, and not in cash to the driver, you will save 30-50% of the fare. Profitable.

Bono cards cost 15 or 25 €. This amount will be on the account. BonoBus is not valid on routes on Teide, the fare is paid in cash to the driver. Enter the front door, insert the card into the validator near the driver, tell him where you are going and how many you are. One card can pay for the passage of several people at once, the main thing is that there is enough money in the account. Well, if you don’t have enough, then pay in coins with the discount. When paying for the fare in cash, keep in mind that according to the instructions the driver is not supposed to accept banknotes with a face value of more than 20 €.

All shuttle buses, whose route passes through / past Las Americas (Costa Adeje), regardless of the direction of travel, they necessarily stop by to stand at the bus station (Estacion de guaguas). Plus a dozen stops are located throughout the resort. In some cases, it is more convenient to use them, rather than stomping to the bus station. There is also a bus station in Los Cristianos.

The bus MUST inform the driver of his intention to get off at the next stop by pressing a button in the passenger compartment. But how can a tourist know his stop in advance if he is riding this bus for the first time in his life? For some reason, declaring stops on Tenerife is considered a bad manners. The endpoint of most of the routes you need is the endpoint. Everything is simple here: you can relax and calmly look out the window. Not to notice the airport, in principle, is also problematic. If you need to get off at an inconspicuous intermediate stop - ask the driver to warn you on the fingers and sit closer to him. It’s good to remind him again of this on the way. Do not be afraid to seem funny and annoying: tourists on the island are treated with understanding.

TITSA where to buy tickets

A few important points when using buses:
Monthly tickets are for locals only.
Near the driver, you might see a bundle of Bono tickets, but he does not sell them (Bono is bought at bus stations). These are replacement cards. If the seat runs out on the back of your ticket and the validator protects it, the driver will issue a clean one with the remaining balance.
Bono cards are valid for one year from the first trip.
When waiting for a bus at peripheral stops when approaching the desired bus, ALWAYS raise your hand - otherwise it may pass by.
Suitcases and bicycles are hidden in the luggage compartment of the bus (the driver opens upon request or self-service).

Types of tickets and prices

The cost of public transport in Las Vegas in the city center (Las Vegas blvd St.) and in residential areas on the outskirts varies. On the transportation schemes, the routes along the center are indicated by the inscription “Strip & Downtown Express (SDX) and Deuce on the Strip”, the routes along the outskirts are indicated by “Residential Routes”.

Explanations for the table:

  • Children under five accompanied by adults can ride for free.
  • The number of transfers from one route to another on one ticket is unlimited during the specified time.
  • Discounts for privileged categories of citizens are provided subject to availability of a document.
  • The fine for stowaways is $ 250.

Buses

On the main street Las Vegas blvd, where most of the famous casinos are located, buses run around the clock, every 10-15 minutes. Buses connecting the city center with the outskirts, as a rule, run every 10-20 minutes from 5-6 a.m. to 12-2 a.m.
