City `s history

According to one version, Haiphong was founded in 43 AD. Le Chan (Lê Chân), a female general from the army of the Trung sisters who fought against the Chinese occupation. The city's name comes from the phrase "defensive coastal zone". In the 16th century it was the second capital of Vietnam. The port of Haiphong has existed for at least several centuries.

At the end of the 19th century, the northern part of Vietnam was colonized by France and became the protectorate of Tonkin as part of French Indochina. In 1888, the President of the French Third Republic, Sadi Carnot, issued a decree establishing the city of Haiphong. Over time, it became one of the most important French naval bases in Southeast Asia. It was also unofficially called the “Venice of Tonkin” because it is penetrated by many channels of the Red River.
During World War II it was occupied by Japan.

After the August Revolution of 1945, the First Indochina War with France began. In it, the Vietnamese fought for the independence of their country from France. On November 23-24, 1946, French troops landed in Haiphong and encountered strong resistance. In retaliation, French ships fired on the city. French infantry units then entered the city, supported by armored units and aircraft. During this action, about 6 thousand civilians of the city died.

In October 1954, the city became the starting point for the evacuation on US Navy ships of 293 thousand refugees from North Vietnam to Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. This was due to a large campaign of nationalization of land belonging to large and medium-sized owners.

During the Vietnam War, Haiphong was actually the only port of North Vietnam. A lot of military cargo went through it from the USSR and China. Therefore, the city of Haiphong and especially its port were subjected to heavy bombing by American aircraft, especially in 1972.

Before the Vietnam-China conflict in 1979, Haiphong had a large Chinese diaspora. She mostly emigrated to China after being accused of collaborating with her northern neighbor during the military conflict between the two countries.
