Geographical objects are all that surrounds us, that is, they are stable or relatively stable objects with a specific location on Earth that can be described. Our article will tell you how to describe the lake.

Typical geographic feature description plan

Before drawing up a plan for describing a lake, you should briefly draw up a plan of a story about any geographical object. So, you can describe:

 • population in a certain territory;
 • journey;
 • natural resources of the country;
 • geographical location of the mainland;
 • terrain relief
 • climate;
 • natural zone / zones;
 • country
 • agriculture;
 • political map description.

As you can see from the list above, you can describe anything you want and for each object there is a plan. But if you do not know him, then you can describe the object according to the standard plan, which is the following:

 1. Define a map, which can be political, physical, textual or complex.
 2. Determine the scale.
 3. Get acquainted with the legend, i.e. determine what objects, conditional images, units of measure are for expressing quantitative indicators.
 4. Find a given territory or object and describe using a legend.
 5. It happens that one map is not enough to describe, so it’s worth using a few for the full picture.

Lake Description Plan: Where to Start

As mentioned above, there are typical types of descriptions, and there is a plan for each object, including for such as a lake. First you need to make a short plan, and then describe it in more detail.

Lake Description Plan:

 1. Title.
 2. The location of the reservoir.
 3. Type of basin.
 4. The greatest depth.
 5. Salinity.
 6. Definition of sewage or drainage lake.
 7. Description of the coast.

In this plan for describing the lake, you can also add the separation of salt lakes by chemical composition, which are divided into carbonate, sulfate and chloride. Lakes can also be divided by nutrients:

 • oligotrophic, i.e. low amount of nutrients;
 • eutrophic, i.e. which contains a large amount of nutrients;
 • dystrophic, i.e. poor nutrients mainly refers to swampy lakes.

Basic Description Plan

A description of the lakes can be done by sticking to the plan described above. It is universal and suitable for the characteristics of any reservoir. But first, a definition is worth it.

A lake is a naturally occurring body of water that is filled with water within the lake bowl and has no connection to the sea or ocean.

On planet Earth today there are more than 40 largest lakes that have an area of more than 4 thousand km 2. The largest are the Caspian Sea, Huron, Victoria, Upper and Michigan.

The description of the lake should begin with its name. For example, it is from this that the story of Lake Huron can begin. It is located in North America in two countries: Canada and the United States. It covers an area of 59 thousand 600 kilometers, has a depth of 229 meters.

Next, it is necessary to determine the type of basin, which is divided into tectonic by origin (i.e., formed in the places of fault or shift of the earth's punishment); glacial (when the basin was formed by plowing the glacier); river; seaside; failure (formed where frozen soils began to thaw); underground; volcanic; artificial.

It should be clarified what is freshwater, and was formed due to tectonic processes.

According to the same plan, other lakes should be described, for example, the largest in Russia and one of the largest among freshwater ones - Lake Baikal. Let's look at a few examples.

Lake Baikal

It is worth starting a description of Lake Baikal according to plan from its location. It is located in Central Asia, in the Irkutsk region of Russia. This is one of the largest lakes in the world, which occupies the seventh position in terms of area and is the deepest among freshwater ones. Its depth is 1637 meters.

Origin. Scientists still argue about its origin, as they cannot fully establish the exact date. It stretches for 600 kilometers, and in width in some places it can reach 80 kilometers. The area of the reservoir is 31 thousand km 2, such as the area of Belgium or Denmark. The coastline stretches for 2100 kilometers, in the west the coast is rocky and steep, and in the east it is more gentle.

Lake Baikal is a wastewater, more than 300 rivers and streams flow into it, the largest are Snezhnaya, Barguzin, Sarma, and only the Angara River flows out.

The description of Lake Baikal according to the plan can be completed by clarifying the volume of water. They are huge, and there are 19% of the reserves of all fresh water, second only to the Caspian Sea. More than 2 thousand species of plants and animals live in the lake, 2/3 of which are endemic, that is, living organisms that are found only in this reservoir. This abundance is explained by the high oxygen content in the entire water column.

Lake Victoria

The plan for describing Lake Victoria is worth starting with the fact that it is located in East Africa on the territory of three states, such as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. In terms of area, it ranks first on the mainland and third in the whole world and amounts to 68 thousand km 2, the maximum depth is 80 meters, and the length of the coastline stretches for 7 thousand kilometers.

The lake is a sewage, the Kagera River flows into it, and Victoria and the Nile flow out, but the main source of food is rainfall, not its tributaries.

The shores near the lake are mostly gentle and low, heavily indented and boggy.

Lake Victoria is one of the largest freshwater lakes, which ranks third in area. It is home to more than 200 species of fish, due to which many animals feed.

Lake chad

The plan for describing Lake Chad needs to start with the fact that it is located in Central Africa on the territory of several states, specifically Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon.

The lake is in the twelfth position among the largest lakes around the world and covers an area of 26 thousand km 2. It is impossible to clearly designate the area, because during rains it spills and the area increases to 50 thousand km 2, and during a drought the area decreases to 11 thousand km 2. The maximum depth reaches 12 meters.

In the south, it flows into the lake, which is one of the sources of food, in the west, the Komadugu-Vaube river, in the east of Bar el-Ghazali.

Amazing, beautiful lakes of natural and man-made origin attract travelers to the farthest corners of our planet. These are lakes of exotic Asia, distant South and North America, prim Europe and our Motherland. The most famous and picturesque will be discussed in this article.

Country Russia

The “Holy Baikal Sea” is the pearl of Siberia and all of Russia. It is the deepest lake in the world with the purest fresh water. Its surface area is about 32 thousand square kilometers, and the depth reaches up to 1650 meters. The waters of Baikal have a unique chemical composition, therefore the ecosystem of the lake is also unusual and unique: more than 50 species of fish, the Baikal seal, and various birds live here. The water in the lake is so clear, and everything that is visible at a glance can be at a depth of 40 meters! Locals attribute healing and even magical properties to the waters of Lake Baikal.

Country: Australia

The mysterious lake of Hiller is shrouded in secrets and legends of Australian aborigines. A pond with pink waters surrounded by evergreen eucalyptus trees is truly amazing. The strangest thing is that scientists still have not figured out why the water acquired such an uncharacteristic hue. Legend has it that blood and milk mixed in the waters of the lake, healing from pain and hunger.

Country: Senegal

Since we are talking about pink lakes, one cannot but mention Lake Retba or Pink Lake - a huge bowl of salty water of soft pink color. But here the reason is obvious - ancient microorganisms (cyanobacteria) stain water in such an unusual color. Besides them, there is no other organic life due to the high salt content (1.5 times more than in the Dead Sea). For the same reason, it is almost impossible to drown here, and salt is mined on an industrial scale. By the way, salt from Retba Lake is highly regarded by European foodies.

Country: Kenya

Lake Nakuru, translated from the local dialect “dusty place”, is located in Kenya on the territory of the East African Rift Valley. A large amount of phytoplankton and algae stains the lake waters in a deep blue-green color. Algae is a favorite treat of flamingos, so millions of flocks of beautiful pink birds fly to the lake. The largest ornithological spectacle in the world attracts a large number of tourists. To preserve the virgin beauty of this place, the Government of Kenya has created a national park here.

Kelimutu Lakes

Country: Indonesia

Kelimutu crater lakes formed in the crater of the volcano of the same name on the Indonesian island of Flores. Once in several years, the lakes change their color: blue, brown, black, red ... The local population believes that the lakes serve as a resting place for dead souls, and refers to colorful waters with sacred awe. However, scientists attribute these changes to volcanic minerals, which from time to time enter into chemical reactions among themselves. But, despite the prosaic explanation, the spectacle awaits you is simply fantastic.

Country: Autosralia

Kroagingolong National Park Australia is home to Lake Gypseland, a popular tourist destination. The thing is that the waters of the lake glow with a blue neon light. Usually this phenomenon can be observed only in the deep ocean, and here it can be seen with the naked eye. The opportunity to enjoy the natural bioluminescence was presented to us by the Noctiluca Scintillans algae living here.

General Carrera Lake

Country: Argentina

General Carrera is one of the largest lakes in South America. The azure waters spilled over almost 2 thousand square kilometers. One half of the lake belongs to the state of Chile, and the second to Argentina. In the first country, the lake is called General Carrera, and the Argentines call it Buenos Aires. The Indians of Patagonia generally called him "Lake of the Storm" for his restless disposition. There is always strong excitement and wind knocking down. Tourists are attracted by the rock Marble Cathedral - the natural pillars of gray-pink marble.

By the way, if you want to see an article about the most, on our site the site for you has an interesting material.

Country: Bolivia

The mirror surface of Lake Uyuni is unusual and world-famous. This is the largest salt lake on the planet (almost 10.5 thousand square kilometers) with a completely mirrored and, attention, solid surface. A completely alien picture was created by nature. But in fact it is a dried-up salt lake and one of the largest salt marshes. Although in the rainy season, the pit is a little filled with water. Salt production is conducted on an industrial scale.

Red lake

Country: Bolivia

The Red Lagoon of Colorado is located in the south-west of Bolivia, on the border of this country with Chile and Argentina. Its depth is very small - only 30 cm, but its peculiarity is that the waters have acquired a pinkish-red hue. This color was obtained due to salt and mineral deposits and microorganisms inhabiting the lake. Depending on the season and time of day, tourists can watch a real game of colors from greenish-brown to scarlet. The fantastic landscape is complemented by thousands of flamingos standing knee-deep in the water and plunging their beaks there.

Crater Lake Crater is located in Oregon National Park. It was formed in the crater of the Mazama volcano, extinct 7700 years ago. But seismologists still observe some thermal activity at its bottom. In addition to its interesting location, the lake attracts tourists with clear transparent water of bright blue color. For more than 100 years, the log "Lake Old Man" has been floating vertically in the lake. And among the waters rises the volcanic island "Witch Island".

Country: Afghanistan

In the heart of the endless deserts of Afghanistan are the lakes of Bande-Amir, whose Afghan name is Imam Ali. It is amazing how ponds arose in such an arid place. Indigo lakes are surrounded by high limestone cliffs. The saturated blue color is due to the carbon dioxide content in the melt water. Lakes and the surrounding area are a national park of the country, and are included in the list of UNESCO heritage sites.

Country: Canada

A real miracle of nature and the Canadian lake Abraham. This is an artificial pond created to collect spring melt water. And the lake is famous for the fact that, freezing in winter, it shows tourists a bizarre pattern of frozen methane bubbles in the thickest ice. Gas is formed by plants growing at the bottom of the lake. Photographers from all over the world fly to Canada to capture this extraordinary and sometimes sinister beauty.

Country: Philippines

An active volcano of the same name rises in the center of Lake Taal. The volcano is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and was last erupted in 1977. Scientists still record the activity of the volcano, and tourists can see how hot fumes escape from its crater. This is a very picturesque but dangerous place. The last eruption claimed the lives of dozens of Filipinos. But locals, despite the danger, settle nearby to grow crops on volcanic fertile soil.

Five Flower Lake

Country: China

The Jiuzhaigou National Chinese Nature Reserve, located in the southeast of the country, hides a beautiful and exotic Five Flower Lake behind 3 mountains. For local residents, it is sacred: crystal clear water allows you to clearly see the bottom, where the frozen trunks of ancient trees that once fell there lie. The color of the water resembles peacock feathers: due to the content of minerals, shades can change from light yellow to jade throughout the lake surface. This place is home to amazing plants, rare animals and birds. Here you can find giant pandas, tapirs and golden snub-nosed monkeys, which are on the verge of extinction. Five Flower Lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In California, there is Lake Berriessa. In fact, this is a huge reservoir with an area of about 84 square kilometers and a depth of 84 meters. It is famous for the fact that a giant funnel for draining water was made in the lake by human hands, which received the loud name Gloria's Hole. It is better to look at this man-made wonder of nature in the rainy season, then the work of this design can be seen in all its glory.

Country: Italy

The artificially created Lake Rezia attracts tourists to the north of Italy with its beauty. Previously, there were several villages on the site of the reservoir, but in 1950 they began to build a dam, and instead the largest lake in the region spilled. About the distant days when people lived, worked and prayed on the present lake day, only the bell tower, visible from the water, recalls. Legends say that sometimes from the lake you hear the sound of long-shot bells ...

Boiling lake

Country: Commonwealth of Dominican Republic

In a small island state, the Commonwealth of Dominica (not to be confused with the neighboring Dominican Republic) is a real miracle of nature - boiling Lake Boiling. Water temperature reaches 90 degrees higher, about to boil! Swimming here is life-threatening, as jets of hot air and lava strike under water. Although the water temperature can drop to 10 degrees Celsius, it can boil in a matter of minutes.

Country: Croatia

One of the most visited natural European attractions is the Plitvice Islands. To enjoy the picturesque scenery, you need to get to the central part of Croatia. Plitvice Islands National Park - it's clean air, a riot of greenery and clear lake water with flickering silver trout. To preserve the purity and beauty of this place, it is forbidden to swim, fish and burn bonfires here.

Country: New Zealand

Unusual lake Pkukaki with sky blue water is one of the main tourist routes in New Zealand. The lake of glacial origin is located high in the mountains and is filled with melt water, so it is so clean and transparent. Scientists believe that the lake is at least 16 thousand years old, but its pristine beauty has survived to this day. The water temperature does not rise above 7 degrees Celsius, so swimming here does not work.

We put this thermal hot water in the article as a bonus. It is not considered a full-fledged lake, but with its beauty and uniqueness, it deserves to be on this list. Yellowstone National Park is famous for its thermal springs and rich nature.

The lake received a unique color due to various microorganisms that “painted” it in various colors. There are cyanobacteria, and the simplest unicellular organisms, and fungi, mosses and algae. Each species of organisms contributes to the color diversity of the source. Depending on the weather, temperature and other factors, the color in the reservoir may change.

An interesting fact is that not so long ago this source looked completely different. It was sapphire color and was called "Morning Shine". But the habit of many tourists toss a coin into the lake has led to the fact that the underground channel through which the geothermal spring makes its way to the surface is partially clogged with coins. Hot water now hardly reaches the surface and the temperature of the lake dropped from 100 degrees Celsius to 75 degrees. This temperature has become comfortable for many microorganisms that now inhabit this place.

If you find yourself in these places, the lake can give you wonderful unforgettable emotions.

And finally

It’s hard to imagine how many more beautiful mind-blowing lakes in the world that weren’t on our list. We urge you to go on explorations of the world as soon as possible, and perhaps you will have something to supplement our article with. Thanks for attention!

WRITING

Completed: Afanasyeva Dari, a student of grade 8

kokorino village, 2012

Homeland, fontanel, Russia, dewdrop, blue ... Words related to pure light, hope, faith and love, to the place where I was born and live.

In the world there are many places where I visited - this is Lake Baikal, Tunka with its forests and ridges, the cities of Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk, in which the Yenisei River flows. Beautiful forests, high mountains, as well as endless fields and magnificent cities, all this you can meet on our land.

And I live in Buryatia! This is the deepest lake in the world Baikal, high Sayan mountains, a wealth of forests, fur-bearing animals and plains of meadows with magnificent flowers. But still, the best place, which is located near the village of Kokorino in the Ivolginsky district, is the forest lake Karasinoe. It is here that you can relax, sunbathe, swim. From the beach, around the lake there is a path that will lead you to the health camps “Cheryomushki” and “Tuyaa”. Fishing here is a pleasure. What are the boys resting here doing. On the sandy shore, you can enjoy the picturesque lake. I sit on the shore of the lake, admire the scenery, nature is always beautiful, makes me happy, I am always ready to love her and enjoy it every day. I was even attracted to this lake, the silence of nature pulled me in and I could hear birds chirping or rustling leaves.

The lake, like a magic mirror, conceals a lot of mysteries. Legends tell old-timers about our lake and its environs. In summer, near the lake you can paint great landscapes. You look at the lake, the world around you, you feel a light blow of the wind, pleasant sun rays.

It is especially beautiful on the lake on a summer evening when the sun sets. The sun slowly falls, and bright colors blur across the sky. And slowly the stars begin to light up. A fog appears near the lake, it slowly covers everything around. It is getting cooler, the birds are silent, the soft smell of wormwood and steppe grasses begins to bitter in the throat. It immediately becomes quiet, peace reigns around. I like the evening on the lake when I and my parents relax here. We make a fire, talk, sing songs and just keep quiet.

Have you ever watched the dawn on the lake Karasinom? Fog appears above the lake and rises to the sky in torn clubs. The expanse of the lake becomes transparent and silvery. The first rays of the sun appear in the sky. Reeds, flowers, reach for the warm sunshine, trying to survive, grow, strengthen themselves. And as the triumph of all living things, the birds begin to sing. Just beauty! I want to sing and enjoy life! Here it is, our lake Karasinoe!

The lake in the mountains is simply beautiful, there is no other word. It looks like a pearl or a gem - sapphire. The lake lies as if in a bowl, surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges. Under the rays of the scorching mountain sun, the lake acquires a bright blue or bright blue color. It all depends on how you look at it.

But the water in the mountain lake is not blue, all this is an optical illusion. It has the cleanest, most transparent water! There are few places on earth like this. This water can not be afraid to drink, it is healing.

The mountain lake is full of secrets. For example, if

If you decide to swim in it, then wait for a surprise. The lake looks shallow. The bottom seems so close, even its pebbles can be seen perfectly. But this is all an illusion, because the mountain lakes are very deep. It's just that the water is so clear that the depths of the lake are not visible! At the very shore you can already sniff with your head into the water. And a little further away the depth of the lake can already reach a dozen meters.

The mountain lake attracts travelers to swim, but the water in it is icy! It is fed by underground springs that start from glaciers high in the mountains. A stormy foamy stream flows from the lake itself, which turns into a mountain river and flows down into the valley.

More beautiful

The whole lake in the mountains looks when spring comes in these parts. The slopes of the mountains are covered with green grass and many flowers! Mountain flowers surround the icy lake. And on it itself, for a long time, small white icebergs, pieces of snow and ice, left from the harsh winter in the mountains, float.
