Undoubtedly, for the residents and visitors of the “city on the Neva”, the Park TsPKiO (St. Petersburg) is a favorite place for leisure activities. This object in the summertime as if magnet attracts a walk among the shady alleys, take a boat trip, admiring the unique natural landscapes. In winter, the Park TsPKiO (St. Petersburg) invites you to go skating, skiing and sledding, wander through the squares in the evening, admiring the bright and colorful illumination. In general, here you can find entertainment to the liking of not only adults, but also children.

History tour

Previously, the territory where today there is a recreation area was called Mishin Island. One of the legends says that Russian soldiers were looking for Swedes here, but found a bear. The first owner of these lands was the diplomat P. Shafirov, then the prosecutor general P. Yaguzhinsky became the owner.

But co-owner of Mishin Island was also Senator A. Melgunov, who built an estate for himself here and created a small park zone. Then the land was sold to Field Marshal G. Potemkin, and some time later it was ceded to its historian and poet I. Elagin. He built a palace ensemble with greenhouses, pavilions, buildings and gazebos. In addition, the clerk ordered to dig ponds and canals on the island, and along the shores pour shafts 2 meters high. This was done in order to protect the park area from flooding. The island was called Elaginsky and everyone began to visit it. After the death of the poet, the land repeatedly changed owners, passing from hand to hand.

Opening

Of course, St. Petersburg has a huge number of squares and for recreation. CPKiO - this is the place where you want to come back again and again.

At the beginning of the 30s of the last century on the territory of three islands - Elagin, Krestovoy and Kamenny, in the Neva Delta, it was decided to equip a recreation area for St. Petersburgers. The palace and park complex of Elagin was transformed into the Central Park of Culture and Culture. But before this, some preparatory work had been done: the walking platforms located next to the Elagin estate were partially modernized, and arches and propylae were erected at three bridges over which it was possible to reach the island.

The alleys were decorated with colorful posters, and the palace was decorated with banners and flags. Of course, this object has become unique for such a cultural city as St. Petersburg. CPKiO opened in a festive atmosphere on August 5, 1932. Residents and guests of the “city on the Neva” walked around the summer pavilions, rode bicycles rented here, visited the rides and rushed to the hammock station with pleasure, where they could relax in the fresh air. In winter, Petersburgers came to Yelagin Island specifically in order to go skating and skiing.

In 1934, under mysterious circumstances, the communist S. Kirov was killed and the park on the island was named in his honor. A bust of the revolutionary was installed at the main entrance. In the second half of the 30s, the authorities decided to continue the modernization of the recreation area on Elagin Island in the city of Leningrad, which today is called St. Petersburg. The Central Park of Artists and Entrepreneurs underwent the following changes: from the Oil Meadow to the western arrow, the Main Alley was arranged, and the arrow itself was decorated with a granite terrace, on which lion statues mounted on pedestals towered. In the winter season, the Main Alley transformed into a long ice track, and Maslyany Meadow turned into a skating rink. In summer, the Main Avenue was decorated with flower beds and lawns.

In this zone, decorative vases made of marble and bronze sculptures were also mounted: “The Girl Crossing the Stream”, “Discus Ball” and “Dancer”. In addition, the park administration took care of creating new alleys and erecting a summer theater with a capacity of 1,600 people. But that was not all. They also built a cinema (not preserved to this day) and a sports town.

The Great Patriotic War caused serious and irreparable damage to the city of St. Petersburg. CPKiO became the place where defensive fortifications were erected, and the object was significantly damaged by bombing. After the victory, it took decades to restore the former appearance of the park. Restoration work was completed only in the early 90s.

CPKiO today

Currently, residents and guests of the northern capital, as before, prefer to spend their leisure time here. Where do tourists go when they come to St. Petersburg? CPKiO named after Kirov, of course. And what can surprise this object today? To many. You can visit the musical Granite Marina, the Stables Building, the Kitchen Building, the Greenhouse, the pop theater and, of course, the Elaginoostrovsky Palace. The latter is considered a real masterpiece of domestic architecture.

Currently, it houses a museum of arts and crafts and interior design.

On the territory of the Elaginsky Island there is a huge number of cozy cafes, there is a volleyball court, boat station, and tennis court.

In December 2012, a restored mini-zoo began its work on the territory of the Central Park of Culture and Health of St. Petersburg (address: 190068 Yelagin Island, d. 4). Guests could personally see red and yellow pheasants, guinea fowl, turkeys, chicken-brahma and other exotic representatives of the fauna.

Park in winter

When snow falls and the water on the street turns into ice, not everyone knows where to go ice-skating and sledding in such a big city as St. Petersburg. TsPKiO im.Kirov - this is just the perfect place for this. For lovers of outdoor activities in winter, an ice rink is specially organized here. In the evening, Yelagina Island is especially beautiful: light garlands adorn the Stables Building, K.Rossi's lanterns delight the eye, and opposite the Oil Meadow you can admire the stunning spectacle called "The Winter Fountain". This composition includes exquisite light figures, invented by analogy with Christmas decorations in the capital of France.

In the second half of December, annual festivities take place. At this time, Elaginsky Island resembles a fairy tale. Guests can purchase New Year's toys and decorations, gifts and souvenirs at the shopping pavilions. Visitors are happy to enjoy delicious cakes, gingerbread cookies, pies and other rich dishes.

Summer park

A lot of interesting entertainments in TsKPiO exist and the warm season. Boat trips, walking with birds singing and twittering, playing on the tennis court - all this is at the disposal of guests who have arrived to spend time on the island of Elagin. Even the squirrels are tame here: they will be happy to receive treats from visitors. Well, the numerous attractions in TsPKiO (St. Petersburg) will not leave anyone indifferent from the children. But how much does it cost to relax in this picturesque place?

Price-list

It should be noted that the budget option for leisure activities is proposed precisely in the Central Park of Culture and Health (St. Petersburg). The prices here are quite affordable.

For example, one hour of roller-skating costs 150 rubles. Those who wish to ride a bike in an hour will give 200 rubles. If you want to rent a scooter for an hour, then this pleasure will cost 80 rubles.

Transport

Not everyone knows by what transport and which route you can get to TsPKiO (St. Petersburg). The best option is to use the "subway". You need to get to the metro station “Krestovy ostrov”, and then going to the right, walk some distance along Ryukhin Street. Then the path lies to the bridge across the Central Nevka.

The second route takes you to the Staraya Derevnya metro station. Then you should go along the Lipova alley up to the Primorsky highway. Then, turning right, we move to the bridge.

The park can be reached with the help of three Elaginsky bridges from the Kamenny and Krestovsky islands, as well as from the Primorsky district.

How to get to Elagin Island? There are many ways, but this is not the main thing. Why go there, that’s the question. And Elagin Island is attractive to many in St. Petersburg. Let's start over.

Let's start with amazing landscapes.

The natural beauties of Elagin Island are determined by the peculiarity of its location. It is located in the Neva Delta, near its mouth. On two sides it is washed by the Neva arms: Bolshaya and Srednyaya Nevka, and on the coastal side by the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea.

From ancient times, coastal lands were low and swampy. Elagin Island is no exception. Over time, its territory, like others, was drained. As for natural vegetation, it was previously represented by conifers, but over time, “exotics” began to be planted here - broad-leaved trees and various shrubs. It is believed that the very first "exotic trees" were planted here under Peter I himself - oaks. Now the diversity of the plant world of the island is very large. I would especially like to note those places of the coastline along the network of inland waterways, where willows bent over the water, forming natural silver arbors.

The park ensemble that has formed over time on Elagin Island is supplemented annually in the spring-summer period with fields and flower beds of various colors. The period when the tulip festival arrives on Yelagin Island is especially noteworthy. And this is really a holiday! First of all, for the eyes and the soul. It is impossible to remain indifferent to such beauty!

Elaginoostrovsky "zoo"

The natural fauna of Elagin Island in St. Petersburg is represented by a wide range of different types of fauna: fearless squirrels - red and blue, field and domestic mice, cutter and shrew, weasel and ermine scurry back and forth along the paths and trees, you can notice the muskrat in the water. In the bird kingdom, in addition to the usual urban "inhabitants" - pigeons, ravens, tits, sparrows, ducks, there are also migratory birds - finch, nuthatch, blue tit, gray flycatcher, blackbird, rook, nightingale, wagtail, woodpecker, blacken, mallard. In warm time, the water has a fairly large number of insects.

Thanks to the man, a small zoo was founded in the Elaginoostrovsky corner of St. Petersburg, where in the cages you can see: black crow, various hens, pheasants, runner ducks, mute swans, geese, reindeer, Cameroon goat, fox Alice, donkey Camilla and the lamb Masha.

It was located in the historical part of the park, at the location of the farm of the XIX century, and from 2005 to 2010 there were held zoological thematic exhibitions. The mini-zoo has its own name - “Zoosphere” and is an interactive educational project, in the framework of which the Animal Trail is also broken.

A bit of history

Elagin island in St. Petersburg in ancient times, when it was still inhabited by Finno-Ugric tribes, had a Finnish name. In many sources it is given as "Mistula Saari." However, the proposed meaning of this toponym as “bearish” or “black” does not correspond to the translation from the version “black island” that can be considered closest in sound and spelling, only in this case the Finnish name will be not “mistula”, but “myst”. Let us take as the starting point the one that the original Finnish name of the island was "Mistu-Saari" - "Black Island". According to legends, the guardsmen of the Preobrazhensky regiment at the beginning of the development of Peter I these lands called the island "Mishin", as there were bears.

Peter I, while rebuilding new territories as the European city of Russia, was very financially constrained in the conditions of the Northern War, and therefore he was giving away lands in the vicinity of the new city to his associates, but on condition that they would drain and equip them at their own expense. Elagin Island was presented to P.P. Shafirov. For the entire XVIII century, nine owners replaced each other here: P. Ya. Yaguzhinsky, A.P. Melgunov, G.A. Potemkin, I.P. Elagin, G.V. Orlov, and others.

The greatest contribution to the formation of the Elaginostrvsky ensemble was made by I.P. Elagin, in whose honor this territory will be named later.

In the XIX century, the estate was bought in favor of the state by Emperor Alexander I and for a century was considered one of the favorite suburban residences of the Romanovs. And how to get to Yelagin Island, the previous owners did not have a question - of course, by water.

Architectural ensemble

Elagin Island is quite large. To see its architectural sights, of course, you can walk to them in a beautiful park. And if time limited, how to get to Yelagin Island in such a way as to immediately get into its historical heart? Do not hope that the palace and park buildings of the ensemble are grouped in such a way that you still need to walk to them, but the shortest way is: from the Krestovsky Ostrov metro station, enter through the main entrance to the Central Park of Arts and Culture and, after crossing the wooden bridge, go either along the embankment to the right or through the sign through the park alley.

And here is a complex of surprisingly harmonious and concise structures in the "antique" style. So only one master could build - the architect of St. Petersburg, Karl Ivanovich Rossi. The center of the whole composition is the Elaginoostrovsky Palace. In addition, the ensemble included the Armory, Kitchen and Stable Buildings, the Music Pavilion, the Orangery, and the Pavilion with a granite pier.

CPK & O yesterday

In this case, yesterday - the concept is very conditional. Rather, in the past tense. Why CPK & O? So the Elaginoostrovsky park was called in Soviet times, and denoted this name - culture and recreation. And now the old name is among the townspeople.

After the 1917 revolution, the estate was nationalized. And in 1932, a city park opened in it, which two years after the opening will be named in honor of the Leningrad politician Sergei Mironovich Kirov. The park quickly became a place popular among Leningraders, not only due to its beauty, but also the abundance of leisure areas: sports, children’s and dance floors, various club associations, chess and drafts tournaments, attractions and the possibility of boating.

In the post-war period, in its first decade, the ensemble was revived almost from ruins, and then returned to the city again as a place of active recreation for Leningraders. And the recreation center was opened in the palace. During this time, the park and the architectural ensemble were hit hard by vandalism. And only from the late 1980s did the Elaginoostrovsky ensemble begin its true revival.

Leisure center today

The revival of the historical estate began with the opening of the Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts and Interior in the restored building of the palace. Over time, the palace began to organize interactive development programs that are popular with the townspeople, mainly for children and adolescents. And for adults, fascinating excursions are offered both around the palace itself, and interesting thematic routes throughout the palace and park ensemble. Various exhibitions and festivals are regularly held here, evenings are arranged for those for whom ... there are dance, children's and sports grounds, a rope park and a hiking trail, as well as traditional boating and catamarans. Every year in June, for the past seven years, street theaters on Yelagin Island present their work as part of the annual international festival. In the Music Pavilion, music evenings and concerts are held in the summer.

Here is another route for those who are looking for how to get to Yelagin Island: from the Staraya Derevnya metro station, walk on foot to Primorsky Prospekt and cross the nearby bridge. And then - wherever the soul wants!

St. Petersburg is known for its cultural attractions: palaces and mansions of the XVIII-XIX centuries, museums and cathedrals. Inspection of all objects worthy of the tourist’s attention can last for weeks, and then city guests tired of marble and granite can turn their eyes towards Elagin Island, where in summer and winter you can relax and take a break from the bustle of the city. Here is the Kirov Central Park of Culture and Leisure, and from the center of St. Petersburg to Yelagin Island you can get both by metro and by land transport in 20-30 minutes.

Location

Elagin Island is located in the northwestern part of St. Petersburg, between the Middle and Big Nevka. Refers to the Petrograd district of the city, to the north it borders with the Primorsky district. The western end of the island goes to the Lakhtinsky bridge and the Gulf of Finland.

Along the northern side of the island runs Primorsky Prospekt - a busy and busy highway through which traffic flows towards Sestroretsk and Zelenogorsk. Less than a kilometer from the north entrance to the park is the metro station “Old Village”.

The south side of Yelagin Island goes to Krestovsky and the metro station of the same name. This is a relatively calm area from the point of view of the traffic situation, the main part of it is occupied by Primorsky Victory Park, and therefore there is a very limited number of parking spaces.

In this article, we will consider various ways to get to Yelagin Island in St. Petersburg, and also discuss how Petersburgers and visitors like to spend time here.

Title

For the first time, Elagin Island was marked on Swedish maps in the middle of the 17th century. Since the founding of St. Petersburg, this territory has been repeatedly privately owned by various officials, and along with the change of ownership, the name has also changed. The fifth owner of the island in 1777 was the Chief Executive Officer of the Imperial Court I.P. Elagin.

At the end of the 18th century, a palace was built for him and a park was laid out, and the name of the island, despite the ongoing change of ownership, was fixed. From that time to this day, the island is called Elagin.

Palace

The creation of the design of the first palace was allegedly carried out by the famous architect Giacomo Quarenghi. Among his other works, it is necessary to mention the building of the Academy of Sciences and the Hermitage Theater, the Yusupov Palace and the Horse Guards Manege, as well as more than a dozen other famous buildings in the center of St. Petersburg and Tsarskoye Selo.

The reconstruction of the Elagin Palace in 1818-1822 was carried out by none other than Karl of Russia - the author of the ensembles of Palace Square, the Senate and Synod buildings, as well as the Alexandrinsky Theater and the building of the Russian National Library, located on Nevsky Prospect.

Unlike architectural ensembles in the historical center of the city, there is no development around the Elagin Palace, which allows you to fully appreciate the author’s idea.

Many visitors are attracted to tulips on Yelagin Island, annually planted opposite the palace. For five consecutive years in May, a festival of these flowers has been held on a grand scale - the last time the organizers planted more than 140 thousand bulbs.

Landscape

There are practically no height differences on the island and pedestrian asphalt and bulk paths are laid. The abundance of small ponds and vegetation make the park, located on the island, a great place for families, and the outdoor area near the palace is often used for mass events: concerts, festivals, charity events.

What you can ride

One of the popular entertainments of Petersburgers on Yelagin Island from late spring to early autumn is roller-skating, scooters and other wheeled modes of transport. The large area of the park allows you to ride for your own pleasure, without fear of meeting "face to face" with a car or motorcycle. Even beginners can ride here.

However, it is worth noting that cycling in the Central Park of Culture and Health has recently been banned. Those who wish can go to the park on a neighboring island - you can get to Elagin Island from Krestovsky in a matter of minutes.

Visitors also enjoy boating and catamarans, which can be rented in the park. Such a vacation away from the large river arteries of the city will be a wonderful romantic memory for a couple in love or wonderful ways of spending time for a family with young children.

Exhibitions and festivals

The territory of Yelagin Island regularly becomes a platform for various cultural events. Charitable events are held here in support of people with disabilities, festivals of traditional culture, international exhibitions, and performances of theater companies assembled literally "from around the world."

One of the brightest and favorite events for Petersburgers was the Tulip Festival on Yelagin Island, which was held in 2017 for the fifth, anniversary time. On an area of more than two thousand square meters, 140 thousand flowers were planted. According to the park administration, every year for two days off, the festival is visited by up to 100 thousand people.

Nature

If you want to lie on the grass, sunbathe and enjoy the other benefits of outdoor recreation without leaving the city, use such a wonderful method as getting to Elagin Island in St. Petersburg.

Visitors with children will enjoy the opportunity to chat with animals - the Central Park of Culture and Culture has its own contact zoo. You can simply bring some nuts with you to feed the local squirrels - they may well be found in any corner of the park. In addition, children love to feed the ducks, which can be found here in any pond. Ducks are unpretentious, gladly eat bread and rolls and are not afraid to swim to the shore.

Oddly enough, the easiest way to get to the park is on your own, namely, by metro. The reason is that in this area, especially at the entrance from Krestovsky, there is not so much parking space, and during the days of events who want to leave the car somewhere nearby, there is a disproportionate amount of available spaces.

In addition, since the Seaside Victory Park is nearby, the number of cars on weekends and holidays doubles. Sometimes in search of a parking space you have to "cut circles" along the nearby streets, and you can get lucky only with the third or fourth attempt.

If you are planning to come with young children or just want to come by car, below we will see how to get to Elagin Island from different parts of the city. First of all, we will consider options affecting public transport.

From the metro station "Krestovsky Ostrov"

The closest station to TsPKiO is Krestovsky Ostrov. You can get from it in 12-15 minutes from the Sadovaya station via the purple metro line. This station belongs to the triple roundabout of the St. Petersburg subway, and you can go to Sadovaya from both the blue and orange branches.

When you find yourself at the desired station, the last one, and the simplest question, is how to get to Yelagin Island from the Krestovsky Ostrov metro station. To do this, just turn right and walk along Ryukhin Street right to the 2nd Elagin bridge across the Central Nevka.

From the metro station "Old Village"

Since the park is large, it is easier to get to some parts of it, by entering the territory from the back. To do this, you need to get to the metro station "Staraya Derevnya" - this is the penultimate station of the violet metro line - and follow the next simple route.

After leaving the metro, turn right and follow straight on Lipova Alley to the very end. If you do not turn off the road, then you will have no choice but to get to Yelagin Island in 10-15 minutes on foot. At the end of the alley you will run into Bolshaya Nevka, the bridge through which you will find immediately to the right, crossing Primorsky Prospekt.

Ground transport

Since it is easiest to walk from stations of the violet metro line, we’ll consider how to get to Yelagin Island in St. Petersburg by land from other points of the city.

From the Petrogradskaya metro station to TsPKiO, you can take the K131 minibus, departing from Leo Tolstoy Square. You will need to exit after 11 stops on Martynov embankment. The park will be right in front of you.

Several suitable minibuses go from the Chernaya Rechka station at once: K132, K133, K206 and K417. You will need to drive three stops and get off at Lipova Alley. The park will be on the left, on the other side of Primorsky Prospekt.

If you leave the car south of the park, you need to look for a parking space on one of the streets - sometimes it requires “circling” around the island, since there are practically no centralized parking lots here.

Perhaps this is all the details on how to get to Yelagin Island by car.

Cyclists

Along the northern border of the island there is a section of a bicycle path that follows along the Primorsky highway from Kantemirovsky to Lakhtinsky bridge. From Krestovsky’s side, the only path runs through the territory of the Primorsky Victory Park and will in no way help to reach the Central Park of Culture and Culture.

It is also worth remembering that the bike can not be used, except to get to the Elagin Island, as riding directly in the park is not allowed. Here you can use rollers, scooters and other types of sports "equipment". But you have to do without a bicycle.

Best time to visit

Since autumn and early spring in St. Petersburg are accompanied by heavy rainfall, the best time to visit the park will be the periods from May to September, as well as three winter months.

The benefits of summer holidays were described in the relevant paragraphs about outdoor activities, talking with animals, various exhibitions and open-air festivals. When visiting in May, be sure to ask how to get to Elagin Island at the Tulip Festival so as not to miss the most interesting days of the holiday.

Winter recreation, due to low temperatures, can be somewhat less diverse, but children really like it: here you can play snowballs, sledding and skiing, as well as a skating rink in the park. There are no cars here, the snow is clean, and children can play in complete safety.
