Like now in Cuba after the hurricane. The cube announced the exact dates for the full restoration of hotel infrastructure. Hurricane Irma in Cuba

The devastating hurricane Irma, which had already devastated the territory of several Caribbean countries, hit Cuba on Saturday.

TV channels show how multi-meter waves flood the legendary Havana embankment Malecon, a favorite place for walks of residents of the capital and foreign tourists eight kilometers long. In some areas of Havana, the supply of electricity and drinking water was cut off, and there were interruptions in communication. Until Sunday afternoon, local time (17:00 Moscow time), the Jose Marti International Airport is closed, through which most foreign tourists arrive in Cuba.

However, experts say that Irma didn’t reach the capital itself, striking the main blow 200 kilometers from it. Gusts of wind in Camaguey province reached 260 km / h.

According to AFP, Irma is the first since 1932 a hurricane of such a force that directly affected the territory of Cuba. Seven-meter waves were recorded on the northern coast of Cuba by the local meteorological service, and the inhabitants of Havana received a "warning" about the danger of flooding.

In total, about two million people in Cuba were forced to leave their homes. “Given the inevitability of Irma, every minute was precious,” wrote Granma, the Cuban main newspaper, in its editorial. The most severe damage caused by the hurricane in Saint Lucia in the province of Camaguey. Waves several meters high caused significant damage to houses and tourist sites, cadenagramonte.cu notes.

No information was received about possible casualties and injuries from Cuba.

Cuba since Fidel Castro has one of the best systems in the world for warning and evacuating people during natural disasters and is well prepared for natural disasters. At the same time, each new hurricane is a painful blow for the Cuban economy, living in an unprecedented blockade by the United States, whose action, by the way, was extended by President Trump on Friday for another year.

Meanwhile, the US Hurricane Center (NCA), in a newsletter released Saturday night, noted that "Irma’s eye begins to move slowly off the coast of Cuba, leading to a sharp deterioration in the weather in South Florida." In the southeastern United States, "floods of several hundred kilometers of the coast due to a potentially deadly storm are expected," the United States National Meteorological Service (NWS) warned.

Residents of this "sunny" American state, home to about 20 million people, left their homes in panic. As noted by AFP with reference to meteorologists, "Irma" will reach the southeastern coast of the United States on Sunday with gusts of wind at 240 kilometers per hour and can cause massive flooding.

Local authorities warn that "there is no longer a place where people can be safe" in the Florida Keys, a popular tourist destination in southern Florida. Here, according to official estimates, about a million people have already been evacuated from the coastal zone, but the number of people who hurriedly left their homes may be much higher. In total, about 6.3 million people were evacuated from their homes as of Saturday evening — that is, one in three Florida residents.

According to observers, in Miami, where a large community of Cuban immigrants lives - more than a million people who left Liberty Island, mostly low-income people remained. Those who have not yet been evacuated are either looking for places in shelters, or are trying to somehow protect their wretched houses with boards. “Roofs from houses will fly anyway, these houses are rotten through and through,” Pedro Marty, a Cuban refugee, admitted. In an interview, he called the protection of his house made of plywood boards "ridiculous."

Meanwhile, the streets of Miami, this "lazy and idle" city, have become unusually deserted. Beaches without tourists, deserted streets and empty skyscrapers - Miami Beach overnight became a "ghost town." The mayor of this famous resort town, Phil Levin, called "Irma" "a nuclear hurricane ... so powerful and so vast."

The US government, which had previously declared a state of emergency in the states of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, decided to introduce it also in Virginia, believing that Irma could reach the north-eastern coast of the country. "This is a storm of tremendous destructive power, and I ask all those who are on the path of the storm to follow all the instructions of government officials," Donald Trump wrote on his Twitter. He spent the weekend at Camp David’s presidential residence, where he watched the effects of Hurricane Harvey two weeks ago.

Recall that in order to help local authorities, the US Navy announced the departure from the port of Norfolk, Virginia, the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, two landing vehicles and another ship. These four vessels, carrying 300 people and 27 helicopters, should provide medical assistance, logistical assistance, and safety to people affected by Hurricane Irma, if necessary, the US Navy said in a statement.

Recall that “Irma” has become one of the most destructive hurricanes in the world in at least the last decade. Its deadly action has been going on for almost five days. At the same time, a hurricane hit the inhabitants of the poor Caribbean countries, who already live in extremely difficult conditions.

In general, according to official estimates, the hurricane Irma claimed the lives of 25 people (10 in the French part and two in the Dutch part of Saint-Martin, four in the US Virgin Islands, six in the British Virgin Islands and the Anguilla archipelago, two in Puerto Rico, one in Barbuda). The number of victims can increase significantly as the debris is analyzed. It is known that, for example, at least 80 percent of buildings were destroyed on the island of Barbuda.

Confusion, confusion and tension reign, according to observers, among the inhabitants of the island of Saint-Martin five days after the passage of the "Irma". In the city of Marya, the capital of the French part of Saint-Martin, debris from torn roofs, numerous debris, various household waste are lying on the streets. Many of the surviving houses, including cottage buildings where tourists live, were flooded. Chaos is exploited by marauders who rushed to stores to steal refrigerators and televisions.

The situation is aggravated by the fact that Hurricane Jose, which has intensified to the fourth category, with gusts of wind up to 240 kilometers per hour, is replacing the destructive Irme in this part of the Caribbean. And his main blow will fall on the islands of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthelemy, whose inhabitants have not yet had time to recover from the shock.

HAVANA - CITY OF LOVE THAN GIVARA AND HEMINGWAY

I really wanted to dive into the Atlantic right from the plane! From the windows of the Airbus A330-200, such an extremely alluring view of sapphire depth with azure veins opened up so that the world without a sea that remained at home seemed deprived to sadness. However, the cold and favorite stone jungle of my native Moscow were left far behind, and romantic Havana was waiting ahead, and my whole soul was eager for Cuba, which barely survived the terrible hurricane Irma. What is characteristic, from heavenly heights, the ocean coast seemed an inviolable paradise, except that light white lambs reminded of the possible uneasiness of the sea element.

About forty minutes before the start of the decline, the stewardess offered a cup of strong natural coffee, from the smell of which the whole cabin of the Aeroflot flight enveloped the spirit of Liberty Island, and life was finally settled. Moreover, the sun shone blissfully outside, the clouds didn’t interfere with him at all, the captain of the ship periodically informed of something vigorously both in Russian and in confident English. The feeling of summer was returning.

Many Cubans are still shocked by the destruction of Irma. Despite the fact that they have long been accustomed to hurricanes and know very well how to escape from them and how to revive the world after unpredictable natural disasters.

Irma turned the streets of Cuban cities into turbulent rivers, flooded the dwellings with showers and an ocean wave, dumped five-story houses like cardboard boxes, completely destroying the evergreen tropical beauty. And many foreigners were afraid to fly to Liberty Island, as I was convinced - in vain! Cuba is still beautiful. No wonder the general director of Havanatur in Moscow Sorelis Casas Figeredo, before leaving, reassured: “Ay, listen, get all this nonsense out of my head! Fly and don’t worry about anything! ”

And so I flew to the country that Hemingway fell in love with. I could not wait to follow his example.

It is symbolic that the namesake of the great Ham and Che Givara, the impressive Havanatur guide named Ernesto, met me on a personal white modern air-conditioned car - it’s very rare on Liberty Island. He could easily speak Russian, and somehow I immediately felt right at once somehow at home comfortable.

Even a week had not passed after the hurricane, however, at first glance, everything looked quite safe. Unless the slightly bald crowns betrayed a recent attack by the elements. However, after the hurricanes in Moscow, although they were considerably inferior to Irma in wind power, personally in our area - in the northeast - thick tens of 30-meter trees were scattered by dozens with roots! But the Cuban, although bald in places, however, for the most part they resisted!

In Havana itself, the consequences of the disaster were not so much striking as they were seen in the eyes of people, in some general mood. The streets managed to gain visible prosperity, but it was felt that not soon would the inhabitants of the city forget how they turned into three-meter rivers that flooded their homes. Havanese will now regain their own apartments only a few years later, when the state will at least partially restore the damaged houses and build new ones. At the moment, people were resettled in dormitories.

Typically, Cubans are accustomed to hurricanes, they know what to do during them, how to escape from them, how to quickly restore infrastructure. But this time, people experienced such a shock that only the renewed interest of tourists will help them to cheer up and forget the violence of the elements.

Fortunately, residents of areas farther from the sea were not affected.

Ernesto drove me to the Florida Calle Obispo Hotel, a very nice Spanish-style building near Old Havana, with columns, a spacious balustrade, and an inspiring glass vault. Cool room with tall ceilings breathed local flavor. By evening, salsa lovers should have traditionally gathered in the lobby, so it was worth relaxing before plunging into Cuban fun.

Frankly, I really wanted to eat, and Ernesto showed one very well-known positive institution on the roof of the Ambos Mundus hotel, which translates as “Both worlds” - namely “both” and not “two,” as another guide later explained. named Rufino. This, of course, is about Cuba and America, which in reality have not succeeded in finding ideological unity. As it turned out, this hotel is also famous for the fact that Hemingway stayed there in the 30s of the last century, and for 2 cookies (approximately 140 rubles) you can see the number in which he lived and wrote the novel “By whom does the bell ring?”, published in 1940

Admittedly, a nice view of the bay and the picturesque roofs of colonial buildings opened from a rooftop restaurant. Even locals really like to miss a sip of something refreshing here, despite the fact that the place is frankly touristy and expensive.

Of course, I ordered lobster, because what is Cuba without lobsters for breakfast, lunch and dinner ?! By the way, only licensed by the state fishermen can catch them, this is forbidden to ordinary people. In general, the entire tourism infrastructure of the country, that is, hotels, resorts and most restaurants, is under the auspices of the state. However, for tourists it does not matter. The main thing is that the service is quite decent, the food is excellent, and the buffet is always full of guava and priceless papaya, which experienced travelers call the most wholesome fruit in the world. As it turned out, in Cuba, papaya is perfect - tender, juicy, sweet - well, just a dream!

In a word, I'm sitting enjoying life under a wonderful Cuban sky, tasting sea delicious with a fruit side dish, when a "tropical classic" collapses. I had to protect the lobster and hastily move under the canopy with the help of experienced waiters, but after about fifteen minutes the sobbing black cloud retreated, allowing us to return to the open part of the terrace. Later, I generally fell in love with Cuban rains - mostly short and nightly.

Meanwhile, the forces that seemed to have fallen after a 12-hour flight magically recovered, and we set off to wander along the coastal Havana. It was nice to take a little walk along the nearest streets, go to the wide promenade. True, after a hurricane, most of it was blocked, but along the bay it was possible to walk without any problems. Local people peacefully enjoyed the view of the ocean, fish, reclined on the parapet ...

Meanwhile, the police watched vigilantly so that no one would go to the blocked territory, but who can stop travelers inspired by curiosity, especially from Russia ?! To tell the truth, if not for restrictive signs, one would think that the coastal park is in perfect order. Even the torn parts of the parapet and the crumpled benches at the first moment were completely not conspicuous. Unless upon closer inspection, they recalled the giant waves that had rolled during Irma.

Just think: a hurricane was tearing pieces of a stone parapet around, but this thing did not suffer at all!

It was gratifying to see that life in the city was running its course. On wide avenues, red, purple, green and white retro cars peacefully and sincerely alternate with horses and wagons. Moreover, horses are almost more than cars, because in Cuba this is the most common form of transport, like 100 years ago.

What a pleasant climate in this country. Not hot, not cold, light breeze ... You get into your cart and slowly rush to the hotel along the thin cobbled streets, masterfully avoiding puddles and characteristic potholes ...

And the next morning we went to the old city with a guide Marta. Past the port, where a giant cruise ship proudly towered, clearly docked for a few happy days, for the Old Town is really beautiful. A kind of sleek UNESCO forces “Caribbean Europe” in the middle of much less well-groomed modern areas. No sooner had the hurricane tear down a small sculpture crowning the old building, as it was perfectly restored within literally several days!

The hurricane didn’t even visit here at all, so the unusual small number of tourists could be attributed to a rare success, because the wandering crowds of foreigners did not interfere with enjoying the cozy beauty of the local architecture. And on the ancient square, the pioneers were engaged in physical education: at the command of the teacher, they ran from one border to another. Needless to say, it looked rather strange, on the other hand, it was a pleasant place, so why not run ...

It turned out that in the old town there is only ONE private apartment! On the second floor of a small house, hewn between historical buildings. They say the apartment is expensive, but no one is going to sell it ...

The old town is actually very pretty. Even local citizens meditate everywhere, ignoring passers-by. Or maybe just the opposite - reversing ...

By the way, in this part of Havana there are banks where you can be very comfortable, that is, in absolute safety, to change money, and at a very decent rate.

Police Academy

Frankly, it's not worth chasing cheapness in Havana. Prices are not too different from Moscow, which is not surprising when you consider that one cookie and one euro in Cuba are, in fact, the same. It makes no sense to be upset about this, you just have to be mentally prepared for this. By the way, if you need amenities, for the most part they ask for a visit to the bathroom. In general, I got the impression that the “keepers of the toilets” are a highly respected social position among Cuban citizens. And no matter where - in the city center or somewhere in the corners forgotten by civilization, prepare a cook - and you can free up the "creative space" as much as you like ...

The main thing in Cuba is simply to disengage and be inspired by the local color and kindness of people who, by their nature, are sincere, kind and smiling openly, without a second thought, even if they live very hard. If they help, then, most often, from the heart, although they need money to the extreme and almost never give up an extra penny in the Euro-equivalent.

Cubans have no personality cult. They love Fidel and Che Givaru, but somehow very calmly, at home, without any pathos of praise. Like, thank you guys that were with us, but without you, we, in general, continue to live as we lived. It seems that they even make fun of tourists who adore Che Givar, but knowing their weakness, they can give a coin from Che from their personal location, touching the emotions of foreigners, but they themselves do not share any special enthusiasm. Fidel, they are grateful for free medicine and education.

“You know, we have a first-aid post in every district where the doctor takes around the clock,” Marta said. “It's all Fidel’s merit.” In general, medicine and education are excellent and absolutely free for Cubans. And those who study well have every chance of making a good career. Cuba has very strong plastic surgery, it’s true - our doctors work wonders, patients come to them from all over the world, and therefore medical tourism is very developed. You know, after all, even Maradona Fidel was treated in Cuba precisely for drugs. Maradona spent a very long time undergoing rehabilitation in a Cuban clinic, and they really helped him. Maradona considered Fidel Castro the second father, and although he was born in Argentina, for us he is a hero beloved by all Cubans.

Word for word we reached a pretty cafe on the square in a pronounced colonial style. We ordered a cup of strong Cuban coffee, and I shared with Martha the idea that it would be fair to associate the name “colonial” not only with the colonies from which it was borrowed by Europeans, but also directly with the columns - one of its indispensable and most expressive details .

“Perhaps I agree with you,” Martha smiled. - Indeed, in fact, vaults with columns from ancient times saved people from heat and rain, allowing them to be on the street even in unbearable sunshine or rain ...

For lunch we went to the bar La Bodeguita on the street. Empedrado, 207. near the Cathedral, not less popular and loved by Hemingway than the famous El Floridita on the corner of Obispo and Montserrat, where the great Ham drank his famous daiquiri.

La Bodeguita is an undeniably colorful establishment. All the walls are covered with tens of thousands of autographs of visitors who have ever been here. At the same time, they are fed with tasty, but extremely simple food - a kind of complex Havana lunch: rice, sweet potatoes, fish and pork. Mojito is the signature cocktail here, Cubans and tourists drink it in such quantities that you are simply amazed.

The restaurant is really nice, cozy, two-story. On the ground floor, everything is open for riot and endless consumption of cocktails, on the second floor you can sit and eat quietly, looking out the window with a romantic look. Martha said that this place in Havana is in some ways a cult. It is no wonder that everyone who enters there tries to immortalize his name on the wall, which, by the way, is not so easy to write on. It is better to take a juicy marker with a thin “pen”, because the ballpoint pen hardly leaves ink on the tubercles of textured masonry.

The aftertaste from a short stay in Havana for some reason came only a few days later, when my journey through Cuba continued in full along the red mountain roads of Olgin - in the opposite part of the island. At some point, the image of the capital, abandoned literally the next day, was suddenly filled with such powerful magnetism that it really wanted to return there and walk at least two more days along the streets and the main promenade, still closed after the hurricane, hiding from the good-natured local police officers, without any special purpose ...

REST FOR ALL FIVE: ULTRA ALL INCLUSIVE. How Turkey has changed after a year and a half separation from Russian tourists.

The Cuban authorities, together with hoteliers, are making every effort to restore the hotels affected by the hurricane Irma as soon as possible, ATOR reports citing the Ministry of Tourism of the country.

CAYO KOKO AND CAYO SANTA MARIA “BACK TO STORY” TO THE MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER

As Cuban Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz emphasized following a personal inspection of problematic facilities over the weekend, all facilities damaged by Irma in the country will be ready and will start working again before the high season begins.

According to him, today 4,600 of the 5,000 hotel rooms in the eastern tourist zone are ready to receive tourists, and the rest in this part of the country will certainly be commissioned before the end of September. The tourist areas of Cayo Coco and Cayo Santa Maria, where the elements caused the most damage, will be put in order by mid-November.

HOW MUCH TOURISTS EVACUATED IN ADVANCE

In an interview with Cuban media, Cuban First Deputy Minister of Tourism Alexis Trujillo Moreon spoke of the unprecedented steps that have been taken to ensure the safety of thousands of tourists. As of September 5, at the time of the onset of the hurricane, only 46 thousand people were on the north coast alone. In total, more than 10 thousand tourists needed evacuation, of which about 5 thousand were transported to Havana and Varadero; another 5 thousand vacationers (these were Canadians) were sent home before the advent of the "Irma".

The hurricane passed pretty close to Varadero. At that time, the resort had 16.8 thousand tourists and 4.2 thousand employees of the tourism sector. “No one was hurt, which was associated with timely preparation, organization and discipline,” said Alexis Trujillo. The hotel fund was also able to avoid serious damage: out of 57 hotels in Varadero, according to the head of the Cuban tourism department, only nine were seriously injured.

As for the hotel sector in Havana, the First Deputy Minister said that it was decided to evacuate all 18 facilities located on the northern coast of the capital, "because of the immediate danger of flooding in coastal areas."

HOW THE RECOVERY IS GOING

Currently, the tourist sector in eastern Cuba works without any restrictions: Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba and Granma are not affected. In Holguin, where the hotels received very little damage, they quickly returned to their usual functioning.

In Varadero, reconstruction work is currently underway here, and most hotels are operating. As local officials promise, the entire hotel fund will be 100% ready to receive guests by November 15th. More damage was recorded in hotels on the northern tip of the peninsula: fallen trees and broken power lines, partially torn roofs and damaged ceilings, facades, broken windows and doors.

In Havana, as a result of a squally wind and flooding, some of the hotels on the coast also recorded minor damage, which they promise to eliminate before the end of September. But there are a number of hotels that have been seriously flooded: it will take more time to reopen them.

The popular Havana hotels such as Arenal, Memories Jibacoa, Cohiba, Aquarium and Commodore are expected to work again this week. Most of the Havana hotel complex operates as before: a total of 60 hotel facilities are available to tourists today, as well as 11 thousand rooms in the private sector.

HAVANA, September 11. / Corr. TASS Andrei Bekrenev. The devastating hurricane Irma is already raging over Florida, but the severe flooding caused by it continues in the Cuban capital.

Flooded the famous Havana embankment Malecon and many streets along the coastline. According to meteorologists, on Saturday, waves up to 11 meters high hit the city, water penetrated deep into Havana for more than half a kilometer.

TASS / Ruptly / Reuters / CCTV

In some areas, such as central Vedado, people travel waist-high or even chest-deep in water. Cars, furniture, debris of the roof float through the streets. Some Havanese move around the city in makeshift boats.

“I’ve lived all my life in Havana, but I see this for the first time. After heavy rains, we often have flooding, but there has never been such a flood. In some areas, the first floors of the houses are completely flooded,” a resident of Vedado told TASS.

City is dead

Most of the city has been de-energized for more than a day. The Chairman of the State Council and the Council of Ministers of Cuba, Raul Castro, has ordered all efforts to restore the broken power lines.

The epicenter of the hurricane did not approach the Cuban capital closer than 200 km, but in a two-million-strong city located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, a gusty breeze blew all Saturday, it was raining heavily.

Many buildings on the waterfront were damaged, including hotels and the US Embassy. In many places where the water has already run off, it is impossible to drive a car due to broken trees blocking the road.

Due to weather conditions, the Havana Jose Marti International Airport will be closed until 12 noon (19:00 Moscow time) on September 11th. Sunday's Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Havana and back was canceled.

Large-scale evacuation

Residents and authorities of the Cuban capital a few days before the approach of "Irma" began to take serious precautions. Public utilities cleared the storm sewer, cut tree branches, covered the glass of buildings in Malecon with sheets of plywood, and fortified the buildings with sandbags.

About 10 thousand people were evacuated from coastal zones to safe places. At present, reinforced police squads are on duty on the streets of the city to prevent looting. Far from all the evacuated were able to return to their homes.

Destruction in resorts

Irma, raging in Cuba for two days, caused serious damage to the tourism infrastructure on the famous resort islands of Cayo Coco and Cayo Santa Maria, located off the country's northern coast. Most likely, some hotels there will have to be rebuilt almost anew. The airport serving these islands is almost completely destroyed.

All tourists, including Russian, were evacuated from resorts in advance. According to the Russian Embassy in Cuba, the Russians did not suffer during the passage of Irma.

The popular resort of Varadero was also flooded, located 140 km east of Havana. However, there is much less damage and many vacationers have already returned to the beaches.

No casualties, damage is calculated

The element caused the island state a very serious damage, the amount of which remains to be calculated. But thanks to the measures that were taken in the country before the storm, the victims, according to preliminary data, were avoided.

Due to the approach of Irma, more than a million people were evacuated in Cuba. The civil defense forces equipped special shelters in many settlements with supplies of water, food and medicine for several days.

According to authorities, Irma caused serious damage to the crop in the central part of the country, in particular, the planting of sugar cane, bananas and tobacco.

Before coming to Cuba, Irma raged for several days in the Caribbean, causing great damage to Puerto Rico, as well as to the islands owned by the UK, the Netherlands and France. According to the latest data, in the Caribbean, at least 24 people died as a result of a hurricane.

The deadly hurricane "Irma" actually wiped out several Caribbean islands, they are now unsuitable for life. The number of dead is growing. Irma is now moving to Cuba, the Bahamas and the US state of Florida. Everywhere mass evacuation.

Dominican Republic, where there are many of our tourists, the hurricane touched on a tangent. But the departure of liners is still delayed. At the same time, compatriots complain that some hotels have begun to require an additional payment for accommodation.

Perhaps the only good news from the Caribbean at this hour was that the deadly Irma, contrary to many forecasts, seemed to spare the Dominicans and the army of thousands of tourists, including about five thousand Russians. At least for this hour it is known that there are no dead, despite the fact that the most powerful hurricane of the fifth category led to serious destruction.

Many Caribbean islands and states had much worse. From everywhere, one after another, there are reports of catastrophic destruction and ever new victims of the elements. Irma literally razed the thousands of homes in Barbuda, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. Local authorities say that infrastructure has been destroyed by more than 90 percent and all three islands are no longer suitable for human life.

“What I saw there is just breaking my heart. Destruction is unprecedented. We will have to evacuate all the remaining residents. And it is not known when they will be able to return back. For us, this hurricane was the most terrible test in history, ”said Gaston Brown, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

In the last hours, Irma tormented the islands of Turk and Caicos, the consequences are not yet known, however, judging by the video frames, local residents and tourists had a hard time.

Further, Haiti found itself on the path of the hurricane, where the authorities declared a state of emergency and hastily evacuated the population. In Cuba and the Bahamas, the arrival of Irma is still only being prepared. The Cuban authorities urgently evacuated more than 50 thousand tourists from the coast and brought rescuers, police and utilities into full combat readiness.

“We are very afraid of what might happen. And we understand that against the elements we are practically powerless. A hurricane of the highest fifth category is approaching us. It is not known how this will end, ”says Clement Oram.

Until the last moment, the American Hurricane Watch Center had hoped that the Irma could turn east and pass Florida. However, these hopes are melting every hour, now slightly weakening, now intensifying again, the hurricane inexorably moves to this densely populated state and reaches its shores on Sunday morning.
