From Kolyvan to Tallinn

For more than 860 years of existence, the capital of Estonia has changed its name several times. For the first time, the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi mentioned the place on the Baltic Sea in 1154. The Russian chronicles also left small inquiries about a small coastal settlement with their own harbor, dubbing it Kolyvana.

In 1219, the troops of the Danish King Valdemar II landed here, who completely destroyed the ancient settlement, erecting on its ashes its own city called Lindanise. From that moment, the quiet life in the former Kolyvan ended. The coastal territory has become an apple of discord between several peoples at once. The devastating raids of the Estonians alternated with the claims of the German spiritual and chivalric order, as well as the futile attempts of the Danes to retain their own power. In the end, Denmark surrendered, having sold the place to the Teutonic Order in 1347. According to an established tradition, the new owner assigned his name to the city - Reval (Russian version - Revel).

Since the beginning of the 15th century, Revel became a member of the Hanseatic League and actively developed economically. It was during this period that most of the art and architectural monuments that were so popular with today's tourists were created. But, as often happens, the heyday turned out to be temporary. In 1561, the Livonian Order fell apart, and frightened by the close proximity of Russia, the Reveller burghers immediately asked for the patronage of the Swedish king.

The city became part of the Russian Empire during the Northern War. The construction of a military harbor and the royal palace in Revel dates back to this historical period.

After the October Revolution, Estonia declared its independence, and in 1919 Revel got its modern name - Tallinn. The city began to grow; pedagogical and polytechnic institutes, the Academy of Arts were built in it. But already in 1940, under a tacit agreement between I. Stalin and A. Hitler, Tallinn, and with it all of Estonia, were forcibly introduced into the Soviet Union. The republic received full economic and political independence in 1991. In the same year, Tallinn was declared the capital of the new Estonian state.

Geographical position

The city is located in the northern part of Europe, on the southern side of the Gulf of Finland. The main lake of Tallinn is Ülemiste. It is the main source of fresh water for residents of the capital. The only significant river flowing through Tallinn is Pirita. It is remote from the center and is protected due to its picturesque surroundings.

Urban transport

The most common public transport in Tallinn are buses and trams (over 68 routes). If you wish, you can ride along the city streets by tram or trolley. Local tickets are of two types: with a fixed number of trips (10) or with a limited validity period (1, 2, 24, 48, 72 and 120 hours). You can purchase them at any newsstand. A more comfortable option is a city taxi, which can be caught on the street or called by phone.

Where to eat in Tallinn

Since the main goal of local establishments is to attract tourists, the emphasis in their menu is on “medieval food”. Modern interpretations of old recipes, complemented by a colorful setting "antique" - this is the main feature of Tallinn cafes.

Note: Estonian cuisine is a conditional concept, since the long-term influence of Denmark, the Teutonic Order, and subsequently Russia, could not but affect the local culinary traditions. So do not be in a hurry to be surprised if in Tallinn restaurants you are offered to taste dishes that are easy to find in any Russian or German cafe.

Adherents of haute cuisine should glance in MEKK. The restaurant specializes in adapted versions of national dishes. It is famous for its culinary masterpieces and Dominic. The institution is located in an old building near the Town Hall Square. For a pleasant atmosphere it is better to go to Peppersack (the name of the restaurant translates as “bag of pepper”). The place is purely touristy, but the food here is tasty and satisfying.

It is easy to arrange a feast of the stomach in local pubs, the most famous of which are Hell Hunt and Beer House. Pleasant and cozy establishments are known for excellent cuisine and the fact that they produce their own brands of beer. Fans of stronger drinks can enjoy a table at the Gloria Wine Cellar. Well, sitting at a coffee and dessert is best at Maiasmokk Cafe. The institution has an interesting history and is famous for its magnificent cakes. By the way, it has already become a small tradition among tourists to take away delicious souvenirs from here, in the form of liquor or local sweets.

A city on the south coast of the Gulf of Finland. When planning to visit the Estonian capital, it is better to plan a cultural program in advance. It will take a lot of time to explore all the tourist sites - only the streets of the Old Town can go all day.

Old Tallinn is a real medieval island in the midst of ultra-modern high-rise buildings of hotels and shopping centers.

Although the unique atmosphere prevailing in the historical center is considered its main feature, tourists are attracted here not only by the ancient walls. The location on the Baltic coast offers walks along the picturesque promenades. Even in spite of the cool and short summer, beach vacations are well developed in Tallinn. In addition, almost all year round the city hosts numerous holidays and festivals.

How to get to Tallinn

By far, the fastest and easiest way to find yourself in the heart of medieval Europe is by plane to Tallinn Airport. However, Muscovites have few other options. A daily train runs between Moscow and the Estonian capitals. A ticket for it will cost less than a plane, but you will have to spend much more time on the way. That’s probably all. Of course, you can either in Riga or get to the Northern capital first, and then go to Tallinn by ferry or bus. But you will have to spend more on the road, and time costs will increase many times over.

The residents of St. Petersburg have more choices. Air travel is only possible with a change, but there are bus and ferry routes. The latter is the longest option, however, and it has its own charm. Cruise ships in Tallinn go with stops in Helsinki and Stockholm. The ship stands in the port until 8 o’clock - at this time you can go ashore, walk around the city and even go on an excursion.

From the tourist point of view, the most interesting is the central part of the Estonian capital - Kesklinn. Here, a few minutes walk from the port, is the heart of Tallinn - the Old Town. However, behind the fortress wall there are many interesting sights - the famous Catherine Palace, Kadriorg Park, many theaters and museums. In the southern part of the district is located the largest lake in Tallinn, Ülemiste.

In the west of the city, in the Haabersti district, there is also something to see. It is here that the country's largest zoo is located. Another significant attraction is the Estonian Ethnographic Open Air Museum, more reminiscent of an old village with windmills and other wooden buildings dating back to different eras. And in the summer you can bask in the sun and relax from many hours of walks on the Kakumäe sea beach.

The Pirita region located in the northeast is known for the ruins of the ancient monastery of St. Brigitte and several buildings of the Soviet era that have been preserved there - the TV tower and the Olympic center for sailing. Here is one of the most popular beaches of the city.

For calls to Russia, it is better to use the tariff of the first of them. From shopping mall Viru Center (Viru Center) from the underground floor, bus number 1A leaves for the final stop Vilmsi, from there go on foot to the beach for about 600 meters, moving straight ahead all the time.

October holiday experience

To consider visiting Tallinn at this time of the year is from a cultural point of view. It is very cold for a beach holiday, but you can always walk along the promenade, breathe in the sea air and enjoy the views. Tallinn is a fabulous city with a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. The sea at this time of year, although cold, but beautiful. We spent only two days in Tallinn, but were not only in the old city, but went to Pirita beach to appreciate all the charms of the sea in Tallinn.

Why is it better to relax in July?

I would like to come to the sea in the summer months, but the work schedule does not allow. In the summer it is much more pleasant to explore the old city, walk along the new streets, relax on Pirita. Perhaps we could even swim, although the Baltic is unpredictable, and sometimes the winds are atrocious even in the heat of the day. By the way, they say that Pirita is a wonderful place for kitesurfers. It is interesting to look at yachts, fishermen, perhaps try yourself in some of the water sports.

Family holiday

First of all, Tallinn is silence, leisurelyness, beauty and tranquility. The listed qualities embody for me an ideal family vacation.

We actively spend weekends and vacations, therefore, we walked around Tallinn a lot, did not use the services of a guide, but studied the streets, sights, and admired the sea. For fans there are plenty of opportunities to see the city in a playful way. On the Internet there is a lot of information about quests that take place outdoors or in the historical center.

Cleanliness in the streets, many playgrounds, squares and benches, equipped recreational facilities. The opportunity to actively spend time with the whole family, to ride bicycles, rollers or scooters. Good roads that do not know what patching is)

Pet owners were pleased - they saw a lot of people walking with dogs. The animals are neat, happy, walking in designated areas - and there are many places. Each square is equipped with bins and bags for cleaning animal waste products.

What to take with you on vacation?

Windbreakers, sweaters, gloves, scarves - clothes in which you will be comfortable in windy and cold weather.

Be sure to grab wet wipes, especially when traveling with children. They would like nuts or street baking, and even smear at the sea too.

Comfortable shoes - sneakers, gym shoes or boots - the old town is completely cobbled, uneven, rises and descends the slope. To see everything you need to have good physical fitness and not give up when you see the road going up.

Where is better to stay?

There are many hotels in the city, you can always find a place to your liking and a wallet. Often on discount sites there are coupons for numbers, take advantage of the offer and spend the weekend to your liking. There are many hostels in Tallinn where you can rent a bed for sleeping. When choosing a hostel, pay attention to the conditions of accommodation, the possibility of using the kitchen and bathroom. For 15-20 euros you can find a small room in a hotel or hostel for one night.

What to do with yourself at the resort?

Be sure to visit the old city, get inspired by its atmosphere, take a walk, take part in a theatrical performance., Dine in a medieval cellar, try beer and soup in a loaf of bread. Zatez inspect the modern city, get lost in it. Go to the quest - get out of the room, drink coffee with pastries. Visit the bazaars and buy yourself souvenirs. And then go to the sea coast - give your soul a gift. Enjoy the freshness of a piercing wind, launch a naughty kite, breathe in a pine forest, inspect the ruins of the monastery of Pirita.

When you complete the minimum program, think about what you would like to do next - in Tallinn there are many places for a good rest. On our last visit, we were at the TV tower and went to the Kumu Museum of Modern Art. Next time we want to visit the Museum of Shipping.

We were on Pirita beach, so I can only talk about it. Its undoubted advantages are white sand, clear water and a pine forest 10 meters from the beach. A place for family sports, a popular place, so do not expect to walk along it in splendid isolation. On the beach are sports complexes, swings for children, fitness equipment.

A picturesque view and a beautiful view of the old city open from the pier.

But the water is almost always cold. Even in the middle of summer, not everyone risks cooling off at sea.

Pine strip is not wide, but perfect for walking. Previously, there was a whole forest in its place, but the territory is gradually being built up, new roads are being conducted. The beach can be reached by bus, the ticket price starts from 1 euro. By the way, for Estonians travel is free.

Asphalt paths are laid everywhere - pedestrian and bicycle. Many restaurants, pizzerias and cafes. Parking spaces for cars with centralized payment through the terminal.

In the summer months for children, paradise is inflatable towns, trampolines and many other entertainments.

you can eat everywhere, at sea, in the old town. We were in a large restaurant (probably, it can be described as a beer). atmospheric place, with large wooden tables, waiters and waitresses dressed in national costumes. Tasty beer, many varieties, excellent, but extremely simple food. We tried soup in a loaf of bread - we ate two kinds, one spicy in brown bread, the other in puree soup in white.

Tried big pretzels. Black pudding with stewed cabbage.

On the street they took hot mulled wine and spiced breadcrumbs.

Tried tomato soup the next day in a cafe in the city. But they did not dare to sip pork ears - they left the delicacy until the next visit!)

Pros of rest in Tallinn

1. Cleanliness and order

2. Caring for people and the environment

3. A lot of entertainment for tourists

4. Beautiful beach and pine trees

Cons of relaxation in Tallinn

The cold sea is perhaps the only negative. But we were not upset at all, because in Estonia there is something to see, and the sea is useful not only to feel on the skin, but to breathe it with clean air and enjoy the look.

Is it worth it to relax in Tallinn?

I love the cold Baltic, I like leisurely and calm, so I will definitely come again. The color of Tallinn cannot be compared with anything - this is a small fairy tale. Next time I want to get to the Christmas market, see a Christmas tree on Town Hall Square and listen to Christmas songs.

January holiday experience

To my winter regret, in 2014, to my great regret, they did not bring snow. It was a rainy, warm January. I really wanted to look at the medieval city in the surroundings of a Christmas tale, but this time it did not work out. But the weather allowed for an unlimited time to walk around the old town and along the sea. I really liked the deserted winter beach in Pirita, on which swans walked (probably they never fly away to warmer climes). Among the best photos was the roof of Oleviste in the fog, glistening with drizzle. Of course, swimming in the sea in winter will not work. In fairness, I can’t imagine if the Baltic states are warm enough for sea bathing. But I am not interested in this aspect of relaxation. I always come to the sea just to look at it. The winter sea in Tallinn is an unforgettable sight.

What to do with yourself at the resort?

In winter, even if the winter is warm, I don’t want to go far from the city center, so I explored only two areas: the monastery in Pirita and the ethnographic park Rocca al Mare. "Ethnic Village" is an impressive reserve in the area in a coniferous forest on the seashore. It contains more than twenty buildings brought from various parts of the country: rural houses, baths, forges, mills. If school, shop and church. As planned, a museum worker sits in each object, pretending to be a local resident, and goes about his business, occasionally communicating with visitors. In the cold season, most of the houses are closed to visitors, and you can inspect them only outside. Maybe it's not bad - even in the winter it took almost a day to inspect the park. The collection is constantly replenished - so, in January 2014, when I walked around the park, they installed a house of Russian Pomor in it - representatives of this subethnos settled in some eastern regions of Estonia. Maybe now this new exhibit is ready and open. About the monastery in Pirita, so as not to occupy your attention, I will say only two things. the first - lovers of medieval architecture and ancient cemeteries must see it without fail. the second - admission to it is free.

Moderately expensive, but very interesting and artistic excursions are offered on the Town Hall Square by people dressed as monks. A tour of the old city is turned into a torchlight procession, during which the guide-monk (fake, of course) tells real scary stories about the times of the Inquisition, murders and ghosts. I like to play such games - discard skepticism and let me scare myself, so I went through the excursion and really enjoyed it.

In Tallinn, amazing knitwear, and there are really a lot of it. But the most valuable thing is that it is truly Estonian. For real European-quality things made in a European country, local knitwear costs just a penny. It’s also very valuable that the patterns that you see on local knitwear are real ethnic patterns. Each craftswoman and each master repeats the techniques and drawings adopted in the area where each of them comes from. When buying local clothing, take with you a unique piece of the country. And these things are very warm and stylish.
