Map of the island of Crete. Rethymno detailed map - streets, house numbers, areas. Blue Flag Standards

From the history.

Modern Rethymnon is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Rhythmna, erected in the Late Minoan period. On the site of one of the modern sleeping areas of the city, Mastaba, Late Minoan burials were found. The city flourished during the Mycenaean era, however in the 3rd century AD Rethymno, for unknown reasons, has lost its significance and is referred to in historical sources as a large village. Despite this, the city remains independent and continues to mint its coin.

In the Byzantine period, Rethymno continues to be inhabited, as evidenced by the elements of Roman and Byzantine mosaics found here. At the time of the Venetians, the heyday of the city fell - the sailors used the harbor of Rethymnon as an intermediate point along the road from Chania to Heraklion. In this regard, during the time of the Venetians, the city expanded and received the status of the administrative center of the region. The old city in Rethymnon has preserved almost all the buildings erected by the Venetians since the 16th century, and is rightfully considered one of the best preserved cities in Crete.

Modern Rethymnon.

Today, Rethymno is the third largest city in Crete; its population is about 35,000 people. The modern city stretches from the historical center to the east, along a large sandy beach, which attracted tourist flows to Rethymnon. Unlike its neighbors, Chania in the west and Heraklion in the east, Rethymnon boasts a cozy 3-kilometer promenade and a beautiful blue flag beach.

In the summer, Rethymno becomes not only a noisy resort town, but also a place of pilgrimage for environmental activists. The fact is that sea turtles Kareta-Kareta, listed in the Red Book, go out to lay eggs on the city and suburban beaches. Young nature conservationists from different countries daily scour the beaches in search of new masonry, carefully enclosing them so that tourists could not accidentally harm the young offspring of these amazing animals.

Arkadi Street

Locals call Rethymnon the city of brides, and active life in it does not cease with the end of the tourist season. The fact is that in the nearby suburbs of Rethymnon there are humanitarian faculties of the University of Crete, so in winter there are always a lot of young people. Most of the cafes, bars and restaurants of the old town and on the promenade remain open in the winter months, filled daily with noisy Greek youth coming from all over the country.

Here, in Rethymnon, the second largest carnival in Greece takes place, concluding the celebration, known to us as Shrovetide, of the week before Lent. The carnival collects tourists from all over the country, and many Europeans who are in love with Crete come to see this striking action. The city, locals, tourists put on bright dresses and celebrate the arrival of spring, which is already gaining momentum in these latitudes - as a rule, on the days of the carnival you can already walk in light clothes with short sleeves during the day, although you should take something with you warmer in the evening.

Transport in Rethymnon.

The city from the nearest suburbs, consisting mainly of hotel complexes, can be easily reached by taxi, ordering it at the reception of the hotel, or finding it around the clock at one of the many taxi stops. Taxi rates from each coastal village are fixed:

Settlement - Cost to the city center
Bali - 35 euros
Panormo - 27 euros
Skaleta - 19 euros
Stavromenos, Sfakaki - 15 euros
Pigianos Kambos - 12 euros
Adeljanos Kambos - 10 euros
Platanes - 8 euros
Misirya - 7 euros

In addition to taxis, Rethymnon can be reached from the suburbs by bus. The bus often has different numbers, but its route is always indicated on the sign: Rethymno - Hotels - Panormo. This bus follows the Old National Road, passing all the hotels from Rethymno to Panormo. Guests of Crete staying in Bali will have to take the intercity bus from Heraklion to Rethymnon or Chania.

Bus tickets should be purchased in advance, at any kiosk, minimarket, or at the reception of the hotel. It is forbidden to sell tickets in the cabin and the driver will not let the bus into the bus without a ticket (and he will not take money into his pocket). When leaving Bali for the city, a ticket can be purchased at the ticket office at the stop (a round-trip ticket will cost you a little cheaper than two one-way tickets).

Walk around Rethymnon.

(1) Pasha Kara Musa Mosque

It is absolutely necessary to dedicate one day of your vacation to Rethymnon, especially if you relax in the nearest suburbs. In Rethymnon, municipal parking lots are well developed, the most convenient of which are located next to the two harbors of the city. Both parking lots are paid, but the cost is quite reasonable - an hour of parking costs about 1 euro, and the daily rate, which takes effect after 5 hours of parking, will cost you 6-7 euros.

We begin our city tour from its eastern side. Having entered the city from Heraklion along the New National Road, or along the Old, from the suburbs, turn onto the embankment - so you will have a chance to see the city in all its glory. Move along the embankment towards the Fortress until you see the port entrance on your right. Having left the car in the port, continue your journey towards the old city.

unknown Soldier Square

Literally 200 meters from the parking in the port is located one of the main squares of the city - the Unknown Soldier Square. You can continue walking along the promenade, but you will not see the old city and all its attractions. It is better to turn onto Arkadi Street, which stretches parallel to the embankment. You go to her directly from the monument to the unknown soldier of the Second World War.

At the beginning of Arkadi Street, to your left there will be a monument to the mixture of Venetian and Turkish architectural styles - the Mosque of Pasha Kara Musa (1) (Kara Musa Pasha Mosque), built by the Venetians and existed for a long time, like the monastery of St. Barbara, but after the capture of Crete by the Turks converted into a mosque . At the moment, the mosque is closed to visitors, but is clearly visible through the fence.

(2) Rethymnon Cathedral

Continuing to walk along Arkadi past many souvenir shops and shops located in Venetian houses, you will soon see a square with the Cathedral of the city on the left (2). Opposite the church is a small church museum and the residence of Metropolitan Rethymnon.

Walking deeper into the center of the city along Arkadi, the keen eye can catch a small street turning left behind the gloomy Cathedral of St. Francis (5) and leading to a wall with an arch richly decorated with a bas-relief depicting grapes. St. Francis Cathedral has been preserved in excellent condition, but now it is not a functioning church, but a cultural center where various exhibitions and cultural events are held.

Passing into the arch with a bas-relief, you will find yourself in a large area, and filled with fun children day and night. To your left is the old Turkish school for girls, which continues to this day, but as an elementary school (first 6 grades). On the right you will see the Neradze Mosque (6) (Neratze Mosque). During the reign of the Venetians, the Neradze Mosque was a church dedicated to St. Barbara, but was converted into a mosque after the capture of the island by the Turks. In 1890, engineer G. Daskalakis designed and built a large minaret with two stone balconies at the mosque. Today, the mosque is used as a conservatory, and the minaret is clothed in supporting scaffolding, as it tilted as a result of numerous, albeit not strong, earthquakes. Many locals call this minaret their "Rethymnon Leaning Tower of Pisa."

(14) Rimondi Fountain

Walking past the Neradze Mosque and turning left, you will arrive at the building of the Rethymnon Folk Museum. Turning to the right of the mosque, you will leave again on Arkadi, but we would advise you to go another quarter along the narrow alleys parallel to Arkadi. Having reached the next intersection, on the left you will see a small square near the Church of the Virgin of the Angels, and turning right, towards the sea you will reach the Rimondi fountain (14), built in 1629 by the rector of the city A. Rimondi.

Moving further from the fountain to the sea, after 300 meters you will reach the crossroads with the Venetian loggia (15) (Loggia), built in the 16th century, on the corner. In Turkish times, the loggia was used as a mosque, and a minaret was also attached to it. Now in the loggia an exhibition and sale of copies of archaeological finds is organized.

Turning right, behind the loggia, you will again find yourself on Arkadi Street, but from its other side. Walking straight ahead without turning, you will find yourself on the promenade, rich in cafeterias on the right and taverns in the old harbor on the left. Taverns in the Venetian port will lure you in all languages of the world and will delight you with freshly caught seafood, but you should make a reservation right there - this place is 100% tourist (not a single tavern in the old port works in winter) and the prices, respectively, are also somewhat overpriced. Therefore, we would recommend staying for lunch in one of the cozy institutions of the old city, but not on the embankment of the old port.

(15) Venetian Loggia in Rethymnon

Then you can go deep into the old city, to the Fortezza fortress (10) and the Rethymnon archaeological museum (11), located opposite the entrance to the fortress, or go out into the modern city to take a walk through the botanical garden of Rethymnon (22), but these are completely different stories and we will talk about this on the pages of our guide later.

Do not forget that shops (not tourist destinations) work on a schedule that is not easy to get used to the first time. And here I want to note that Rethymno is beautiful in the rays of the summer sun, and no less charming in the light of the moon.

Narrow street overlooking the bell tower of Megalos Antonios church

Archaeological excavations suggest that the first settlements appeared on the territory of modern Rethymno back in the Minoan era. Later, in the Greco-Roman period, the city grew and became an important trading center, and during the Venetian occupation, it played the role of the cultural center of the island.

The 16th century is the time of the greatest splendor of Rethymnon, when its fame as the center of science and art spread far beyond the borders of the country. However, already in the 17th century the Turks invaded here, turning all the churches into mosques and for 200 years predetermining the course of development of the entire region.

In 1898, Crete gained autonomy, and in 1913 the island was annexed to Greece. After 10 years, almost no Turks and Greeks who converted to Islam were left on its territory - all of them were resettled, and the Greeks from Asia Minor came to their place.

The rapid development of the economy and culture, which could be observed in Rethymno, was suspended during the Nazi occupation, but the city quickly recovered from its past and is now considered one of the best resorts in Crete.

Attractions Rethymnon

Rethymno is a city with a rich history, the memory of which has been preserved in its old part. Labyrinths of cobbled streets, stone houses, whose walls are twined with grapes - in all this you can feel the influence of different cultures: the Venetian and Turkish. It is here that most of the architectural monuments of Rethymno are concentrated, so it is not surprising that the Old Town is called an open-air museum.

The most recognizable and most grandiose structure of all that is on the island of Crete is the Fortezza fortress. It was built at the end of the 16th century and for a long time served to protect the city from pirates. In addition to defensive structures, the bishop’s palace, the house of the rector and advisers have reached the present time in excellent condition. Also on its territory is the mosque of Ibrahim Khan - it was built by the Turks after the capture of the island. The fortress looks especially beautiful at the end of the day, when the last rays of the sun illuminate its walls. Entrance ticket costs 4 euros, and in winter admission is free. Opening hours - daily from 8:00 to 20:00.

Those who are interested in the history of Rethymnon and Crete as a whole can visit the Archaeological Museum located opposite Fortezza (22 Cheimarras St.). The building he occupies was once a Turkish prison. A large collection is divided into several thematic blocks by epoch. Crockery, jewelry, statues of gods, ceramics, sarcophagi - this is not a complete list of treasures that can be seen here. The museum is open from 9:30 to 15:00 on all days except Monday. The ticket will cost you only 4 euros.

One of the most romantic places in Rethymnon is the Rimondi fountain. There is a belief that if lovers drink from it, they are destined to get married soon. In fact, the construction performed a more practical role: it provided water to the whole city. The fountain is located on Platanou Square and cannot be confused with any other: it is decorated with four columns with capitals, and water is supplied from stone lion's mouth.

Not far from the port, on the corner of Arkadiou and Paleologou streets, is the famous Venetian Loggia. Now a souvenir shop is located in the building, but once important political issues were being resolved here.

Walking along Rethymnon, you should definitely visit the promenade. Here, tourists will find many souvenir shops and cafes where you can relax after a busy day. The port is decorated with a Venetian lighthouse erected on a stone ledge.

Also, you should not miss the opportunity to visit the suburbs of Rethymno: the monastery of Arcadia, the village of Spili with its complex of waterfalls, Kurtaliiotiko gorge.

Resorts Rethymnon

Rethymnon is famous for its resorts, and its beaches have been repeatedly awarded the most prestigious award: the blue flag. In addition to the clean coast, vacationers may also be interested in the opportunity to see turtles leaving the sea to lay eggs.

One of the most popular resorts in Rethymno is the village of Bali. Tourists are attracted here primarily by picturesque landscapes and views overlooking the bay, and on a pirate ship you can take an exciting journey along the coast.

The small village of Panormo is another resort worthy of attention. Its main advantage is that it has preserved the traditional way of life, not spoiled by the tourism business.

Water sports enthusiasts should head to the Plakias resort, located just a 30-minute drive south of the city. To see the rich underwater world, it is not necessary to take equipment with you - in the village there are many salons where you can rent everything you need, and experienced instructors will come to the aid of novice divers.

40 km south of Rethymnon is one of the most beautiful resorts - Preveli. Azure lagoons, palm trees - the best place for photo shoots is difficult to find.

Nightlife in Rethymnon

Rethymno is famous for its vibrant nightlife, full of diverse entertainment. So, most cafes located along the promenade, only begin their work after sunset. Here you can enjoy fish dishes, as well as get acquainted with local cuisine. The old city, in turn, attracts with traditional taverns, where folk music is played.

The work of most clubs depends on the season. For example, in winter, nightlife is concentrated in the historical center of Rethymnon, on Melissunu Street. In the summer, when the influx of tourists is especially large, the baton is taken over by establishments located outside the city at resorts such as Platanias and Misiria.

When is the best time to go to Rethymnon

The tourist season opens in Rethymnon in April and lasts until the winter, when rains begin in Crete. Already in spring, the thermometer rises to 20-25 ° C, the temperature rises further, but even the hottest summers are easily tolerated due to the fact that the beaches are blown by the winds.

Those tourists who chose Rethymnon not only for the warm sea and sandy beaches can come here in March - just then the famous carnival starts, which turns the city into a huge dance floor for three weeks. At the same time, the program is very diverse: in addition to the parade, tastings of traditional Cretan dishes and wines are held here, theatrical performances are shown, song and dance competitions are organized.

Also, as part of the carnival, a treasure hunt is conducted. To find a hidden treasure, you need to know the history of the city, be well-versed in historical and architectural monuments, so it will be difficult for an uninitiated person. However, an excellent entertainment would be even the opportunity to watch how the locals compete with each other. Those tourists who dare to take part in the search for treasures can win a paid vacation at a local resort.

Summer in Rethymnon attracts not only lovers of beach holidays: at this time of the year there are two festivals: the Renaissance and the wine festival. The first is dedicated to art: famous music and theater figures gather in the city, concerts are organized, and plays by famous Cretan and world playwrights are staged, and movie screenings are organized. During the wine festival, the city garden is filled with the sounds of folk music, and all adult guests can enjoy a variety of varieties of a noble drink, while absolutely free.

How to get to Rethymnon

There is no international airport in Rethymnon, so you will have to get to it with transfers, for example, via Heraklion or Chania. Regular flights fly from Moscow in this direction. The rest of the way to the city can be done by bus. Arriving in Greece at the height of the tourist season, you need to take care of tickets in advance, otherwise you will have to stand all the way (78 km). In addition, you can take a taxi - the fare will cost about 70 euros.

Another option that is especially suitable for those traveling with a large company is car rental. Both Heraklion and Chania need to follow the New National Road E75.

Those who prefer to fly to Athens will be able to sail to Rethymnon by ferry.

The map of Rethymnon in Russian can be divided into two parts: Old and New Town.

The historical center is the center of buildings built in the Venetian style: with openwork window grills, cast metal door handles and typically Turkish wooden balconies, randomly hanging over narrow streets. The main attractions of this part of the city are the majestic fortress of Fortec, the Rimondi fountain and mosques with minarets.

 Mint & ginger

Just behind the embankment begins the New City - a commercial area with many shops, boutiques and souvenir shops. Experienced tourists recommend shopping here.

As for accommodation, the largest number of hotels on the map of Rethymnon is located in the area of the promenade.

Like other resorts with a long history, Rethymno boasts the presence of an interesting ancient part and new areas.

The old city is the center of Venetian buildings that combine both traditional Renaissance decorations (for example, openwork lattices) and Turkish decorative elements (balconies overhanging the streets). Despite the presence of the latter, this part of the city is very similar to Venice with its winding streets leading to temples or fountains.

However, the first thing that catches your eye while walking around the historical part of the city is not architectural wealth at all, but huge flower garlands and pots with plants. And this is not all the surprises of the old streets. Local residents are convinced that there is no limit to perfection, so they do not spare time, effort and imagination to "ennoble" their city. Someone in a creative outburst pastes the facades of houses with newspapers, someone takes out several tables and chairs onto the street, turning the nearby territory into a cozy home cafe ...

Special attention deserves the promenade area, which stretches along the beach. It is here that the party life of the city is concentrated - bars, restaurants and night clubs are enough for everyone! And from here a magnificent view of the dilapidated fortress Fortets, the lighthouse of the XIII century. and a harbor filled with fishing boats and pleasure yachts. This, perhaps, is the area in which it is better to stay in Rethymnon.

Right behind the embankment begins the commercial zone of Rethymnon. Here at every step there are boutiques, souvenir shops, hotels.

There are no dangerous areas in Rethymnon - a calm relaxed atmosphere reigns here.

In which of the areas of Rethymno it is better to live, you decide. In any case, unforgettable inspirational emotions and impressions are guaranteed!

Rethymnon beach on the Greek island of Crete is famous for its clean and spacious coastline with fine sand and clear water, changing the color palette depending on the weather from a bright turquoise to dark indigo. The beach area, located 1 km from the city center, extends 13 km along the bay: from the Venetian pier to the east up to the village of Skaleta.

Infrastructure

The resort’s municipal beach is separated from the road by green lawns and well equipped: lifeguards, sunbeds and parasols, changing cabins, showers, toilets and taps for washing feet are installed. Equipped with sports and playgrounds, cafes, bars and water sports centers.

Sea activities:

 • parasailing;
 • riding on "bananas" and "cheesecakes";
 • water ski, catamaran, jet ski and canoe rental;
 • boat trips;
 • fishing;
 • diving and snorkeling.

Wooden flooring laid in the sand makes traveling along the beach much easier, especially with baby strollers. Wi-Fi access is available in a number of locations.

There are no closed private beaches in the town. Hotels rent coastal areas, but admission is free everywhere, the fee is charged only for rental of beach equipment (for "their" guests this service is provided by hotels for free). At the same time, it is not forbidden for “foreign” guests to take any place they like for sunbathing on the sand, sitting on a towel or mat. In order to save money, you can buy an umbrella and a deck chair in the store, as the cost will be comparable to the daily rent of a similar set on the beach (7-10 euros).

The epicenter of evening life is the embankment of Eleftherios Venizelos, named after the Greek politician who served as prime minister several times from 1910 to 1933. The Athens International Airport, the largest in Greece, bears the same name. With the onset of darkness, the street closes for transport and turns into a promenade, and tables of numerous cafes and taverns appear on the sidewalks. Dinner for two with drinks will cost an average of 20 euros.

Rethymno Beach Hotels

The city with a population of 30,000 people offers tourists a wide selection of accommodation designed for any budget: from guesthouses to luxury villas and apartments with a modern or authentic interior. Hotels on the first line have their own equipped areas on the beach.

Since October, hotels have been declaring a season of discounts, but you should not count on super-low prices: the resort is in demand all year round, since the tourist attractiveness of the region is due to its rich history and many architectural monuments, carnivals and festivals are also held here.

If before the trip you download the My Crete Guide application on the Google Play or the App Store (the menu in Russian is provided), then you will have at hand a map of Rethymnon with all the sights and cafes.

Weather and season at Rethymnon beach

In Rethymnon, washed by the Aegean (Cretan) sea, hot and dry summers, the climate is closer to the Mediterranean.

The average air temperature fluctuates around + 30 ° C. The sun shines more than 300 days a year. In winter, the thermometer does not fall below + 10 ° C. The swimming season lasts from late May to October. Water warms up to + 25 ... + 28 ° C.

Like the entire northern coast of Crete, the beach is not protected from the winds, so sometimes the sea is worried, but mostly calm in the summer. The energy of the waves is extinguished thanks to the established moles.

Beach features

Despite the large number of vacationers, the coastal strip is never crowded. The entrance to the sea is gentle, the depth is increasing gradually. Shallow water ends at a distance of 20-30 m from the coast, which makes the beach ideal for families with children and people who cannot swim. For swimming, it is recommended to use aquatic hoses, as the waves wash a layer of pebbles at the edge of the surf, besides, the risk of stepping on a sea urchin is not excluded.

The bay was chosen by Caretta relict big-headed turtles, listed in the Red Book as a vulnerable species. Zoologists believe that these reptiles appeared on Earth in the era of dinosaurs and have lived on the planet for at least 95 million years. The body weight of the logheads is from 80 to 200 kg, and the length of the shell reaches 1-1.5 m. On the front fins - a pair of claws. Adults return annually to the place where they were born to give life to new offspring. Females from May to July are selected at night by land, dig holes and lay eggs on land.

Volunteers enclose the masonry with protective tapes and warning signs; in total, approximately 400 nests can be found. At the end of summer, one can see how the hatched turtles rush together to the water. The process of population restoration is controlled by employees of the Archelon Sea Turtles Rescue Center, equipping safe corridors for the cubs. The difficulty lies in the fact that babies can not be picked up and carried to the sea, they must find their own way.

The blue flag waving on the beach of Rethymno is a kind of quality mark, which is as prestigious to receive as a Michelin star restaurant. Since 1987, the best beaches in the world have been participating in the international certification program. To post Blue Flag, you need to confirm compliance with more than 30 criteria, and the requirements are constantly complicated. The award is awarded only for one swimming season, and the next year the procedure will be repeated again, proving the commission a high level of service. Certificate renewal time is in May. In addition to the purity of water and the coastal zone, comfort should be provided for vacationers.

Standards for obtaining the Blue Flag:

 • free access to the beach for everyone;
 • there are toilets, showers and changing rooms;
 • water is tested weekly in the laboratory;
 • garbage is regularly cleaned and sorted for further processing;
 • sand is cleaned at the end of the day;
 • rescuers and doctors on duty;
 • emergency medical care is provided on site;
 • motor vehicles do not move along the beach;
 • the coastal strip is not used for walking pets;
 • the beach is accessible for people with disabilities;
 • the territory is equipped with playgrounds and playgrounds;
 • food points and entertainment centers work.

In fact, Blue Flag is an environmental program based on the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem, natural phenomena and the biological diversity of the area, and Rethymnon beach fully fulfills its tasks.

What to see in Rethymnon

Beach vacations can be alternated with visiting local attractions both independently and with the help of tour agencies. Of particular note are the Fortezza Fortress, the Archaeological Museum, the Historical and Ethnographic Museum, the Rimondi Fountain and the Chapel of St. Nicholas, built right on the sea. 30 km from Rethymnon is the equally popular beach of Bali (do not confuse it with the island of the same name in Indonesia).

How to get there

The journey will have to start in any major city in Greece, as Rethymnon does not have its own airport. For example, you can take a ferry from Athens to Heraklion. The ferry runs daily.

Railway communication in Greece is poorly developed due to the mountainous terrain. Comfortable air-conditioned buses run from different parts of Crete to Rethymnon. Passenger transportation is handled by KTEL. Most tourists fly to Heraklion or Chania, and then get to the bus station and choose the route to Rethymno. Travel time from both places will take a little more than an hour, flights depart several times a day. Ticket price is approximately 7 euros. It is worth considering that Greek drivers tend to start off ahead of the time indicated in the schedule.

The most comfortable way to get to Rethymnon is by taxi or a pre-ordered transfer. The transfer price includes a meeting with the driver with a sign in the arrival hall, baggage loading and delivery to the hotel door.
