Until 1997, the arch bridge from Krk to the mainland was a masterpiece of engineering!

The island was inhabited already in the Neolithic era. In the ancient period, Roman legionaries laid many new settlements, which eventually turned into cities.

The island received its unusual name, without vowels, in the 7th century, when Croats came here and brought the alphabet to the glagolitic. In the Middle Ages, the Venetians built many lovely mansions and palaces in the towns of Krk. Everywhere there are scientific winged lions with books - symbols of the power of the Most Serene Republic.

Luxury hotels, restaurants, konoba taverns, as well as tennis courts and diving clubs of the island of Krk are waiting for guests!

The capital of the island, the ancient city of Krk, was once called Kuriktarum. Here you can see the ancient Roman city walls with powerful bastions and majestic gates. All the continuity of European history is reflected in the building of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. It was built on the site of the early Christian Byzantine basilica of the 5th century, which was built over the ruins of Roman terms.

The streets are white. The milk walls of houses with arches, steps and flowering verandas are pleasing to the eye.

General information

Krk is the largest island of the Adriatic Sea, located near the Dalmatian coast (its area is 406 km²). The population is about 17,000 people.

The island of Krk has a rich history: the first mention of it dates back to the 1st century BC. (naval battle of Julius Caesar and Pompey). Next was the arrival of the Slavs in the 6th century, the formation of the Venetian Republic in the 18th century. and its collapse, after - the occupation by the Italians, and after another 40 years, the island became part of the CAA. Then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was formed, and in 1990, like many states, Croatia (and Krk in particular) gained independence.

Today the island is very popular with tourists - there are several resorts and historical and cultural values.

Krk National Park

Krk National Park is the pride of the island of the same name and the whole of Croatia. This place is famous for its picturesque nature: waterfalls, green hills and forests. Krk National Park is not inferior to beauty - tourists also come here from all over Europe.

In the protected area of the park there are more than 860 species of animals and 18 species of fish. The Krk National Park in Croatia is also famous for its birds: every autumn and spring you can see bird migration here.

 Skradinsky beech

As for the sights, this is, first of all, 7 picturesque waterfalls. The largest of them is the Skradinsky beech, reaching a height of 46 meters. Near it you can also find an ethnographic museum - here are presented windmills operating on the energy of a waterfall.

There are also architectural sights in the national park - these are the Franciscan monastery Visovac and the Serbian Orthodox monastery Krka. These temples in Croatia were built back in the XIV century, then were repeatedly destroyed, but were again restored.

The island of Krk is a great place in Croatia for both beach and sightseeing tourism.

Going to the island of Krk, we knew only two things:

 • the name of the island is consonant with our last name, so we definitely need to get here,
 • numerous excursions “Krk up and down in one day” are brought here.

Therefore, we booked apartments for a day to look around and decide whether it makes sense to stay here for a few more days.

The island of Krk for me is green, breathing in the sea, with the most delicious octopus salad, the majestic Frankopan castle and kilometers of beaches.

Krk: in a nutshell

Each resort is involuntarily compared with others where it has already been. Before Croatia, our best vacation was on the islands of Greece, where we were soooo good in all respects, which seemed to be unlikely to be better somewhere. If you have been to Kos and Corfu or in Italy and it’s “entered” you, our tastes probably coincide. In Croatia, at that time we had already visited Istria (antique, fairy-tale, cozy, the cities of the Kvarner Bay (industrial, picturesque village of Volosko, luxurious). They always sighed at Krk: why, why is this region so underestimated by our fellow citizens? Reviews about Krk only foreigners write. There was almost no Ukrainian or Russian language heard, cars with license plates of the CIS countries were not seen at all, while for some 40 km from here, in Opatija, there are many of ours. By the way, I have never seen a sightseeing tour of sea tours to the island of Krk - maximum about day trip as part of the tour.

And how cool everything is here, absolutely everything!

Krk bridge - a 1430-kilometer concrete structure connects the island of paradise with the "big land". This is a miracle of human engineering and one of the symbols of the region is beautiful both in itself and as a place for photo shoots. He is recognizable, the locals are proud of him - in the photo gallery of the island of Krk, the city of Krk, and even apartments and hotels, they necessarily add one of the views of the bridge. And this is also the main way to get to the island of Krk. It is also possible by plane, but tourist charters do not fly here (personally, I have not seen such information), or by ferry, but if you are by car, it is less convenient.

Attention! Plan a stop immediately after the bridge when entering the mainland - here you will get good selfies, and there is where it is convenient to park. On the road it will be impossible. We stupidly, and as a souvenir we only had such a photo from the Krk bridge in the spirit of “danunafig, on the way back we take a selfie” ...

Entrance to the bridge is paid - 35 kunas per passenger car. We accept cash and a card. Attention! At other paid sites, there are two checkpoints each: at the entrance you take a ticket - and at the exit you pay for it. Here you need to immediately prepare for payment.

Departure is free (at least when we left the island, it was just that).

On both sides of the point of payment for the road, both times there were small tricks (when we drove in and out). But we only stayed for 5-10 minutes.

Beaches.Arriving on the island with an excursion “all in one day”, get ready to be disappointed: you can see all the beaches in a day only by touring the entire coast and stopping for half an hour here and there. We were luckier, and we could afford to lie for half a day on each of the largest beaches! And remember that in addition to the zones officially marked as a “beach”, kilometers of “unofficial” beaches stretch along the island. About the most basic.

City beach of Krk. Small pebbles, a concrete pier, at the pier there are stones on which you can sunbathe and from which it is convenient to jump into the water. Entry into the water is gentle, therefore. The water is clear. The beach is located in a small bay, so the water warms up better than in the "open sea", even in a storm the water is quiet. Near the shore there is a small park area where you can sit on a sun lounger, towel or even stop with a tent. The place is very beloved by the tents - here they “savage” and sing along with the guitar. There are locker rooms, restaurants, cafes. Paid parking is nearby, but if you move a couple of streets away from the beach, you can leave your car for free. The beach is adjacent to the promenade, where it is always busy, all the entertainment is within walking distance. The main highlight of the beach is a beautiful view of the sights of the city of Krk and the opportunity to hear the chime of bells every hour. After the ideally clean beaches of Istria, it seemed a little dirty here - there are still cigarette butts (a little, and this does not compare with our domestic resorts). Well, the water, as elsewhere in Croatia, is clean, crystal clear, alluring.

From the city beach, the roofs and spiers of the city of Krk are visible.

Beach in the city of Vrbnik. It is he who is recommended by locals as the best place for swimming, and the Old Town - for an evening walk and dinner with seafood and a glass of local wine. The beach is a picturesque bay with equipped (sunbeds, umbrellas, cafes, locker rooms) part and a gentle pebble entry into the water.

If you move left and right, you find yourself in a more secluded area where you can lay a towel on the stones and enjoy the solitude, the sun, clear water.

And all this - with a view of the Old Town. Here you can rent apartments or stay at the hotel if rest without fuss is yours. And from here - to travel around the island.

Krk island, Vrbnik beach, pay attention to the color and transparency of the water:nofilter, without photoshop.

Beach in the city of Baska (do not confuse with the Old Baska, it is nearby, and with - near Makarska). This is a resort area with a large number of hotels, pensions, apartments on the coast. It is at the same time the largest beach in the region (one and a half kilometers), and not the best place for social-phobic introverts: there are a lot of people here - the density of tourists per square meter is higher than in the same Vrbnik.

The beach here is small pebble, with a gentle entry into the water and piers crashing into the water. The sea is more stormy than on the beach of the city of Krk, in a small storm it is cool to fool around here.

The historical part of the town adjoins the beach with attractions, konobas, coffee houses and souvenir shops.

The most “authentic” and at the same time useless souvenir that can be found only in the city of Baska (Croatia, island of Krk) - beads, candles, figurines, pictures based on the “Bashkan plate” with the letters of the Glagolitic alphabet.

Well and of course the faultKatunar - about them will be further.

The main attraction of the town and the best viewpoint is on the mountain near the church (visible from almost anywhere at the foot of the hill on which it stands).

Walk (40 minutes up and 20 down) or drive a car for the sake of a view is definitely worth it.

At the time of our trip in June 2015, the church was closed to tourists, but most importantly, the views.

Like any ancient church, this one has a cemetery. Sad but well maintained.

And then we wrapped circles along the coast in search of sights, towns, wine and saw kilometers of beaches that are not marked on the maps, but are perfect for a secluded or organized comfortable stay.

City Krk worth exploring yourself. Map of attractions in hand - and go. Walk “for show” in all places of “military glory”, get lost in the maze of streets, climb the city walls. The "Rise at your own peril and risk" sign is especially touching. What do they know about fear and risk!

A couple of steps away from the busy main streets - and you find yourself in a "sleeping area": here, in these houses, from the window you can watch a football match on the TV of a neighbor. Here you can clink glasses with a handsome young man who lives across the road without leaving home. Here, clothes are dried on the ropes stretched over the street, lazy cats sleep on the warm steps, and window sills are covered with flowers in pots. In general, real people still live almost ordinary lives here.

Excursion and beach holidays in Krk: all the pleasures on one island.

The tourist season and the most suitable weather for a beach holiday on the island of Krk lasts all summer. The velvet season is closed at the end of October, when the last vacationers leave the island of happiness, the town becomes quiet and deserted. Locals love this time of year! My dream is to visit the historical cities of Croatia, especially to.

Sightseeing tours of the cities of the island usually designed for 4-6 hours: Vrbnik, Baska, Malinska, Biseruyka cave.

This is one ofmust-see points on the map of the island, as they say. According to legend, pirates hid pearls mined by painstaking robbery and extortion (in Croatian - beads).

Now there are no beads in the cave, but there are stalagmites, stalactites, steep descents and ascents on the stairs.

Moments:

 • in the cave temperature + 15 ° С. The difference with +30 overboard is noticeable, in 10-20 minutes of walking you are unlikely to freeze, but for children it is better to take a sweater,
 • for us personally it wasn’t a wow spectacle, but families with kids were thrilled,
 • the walk takes about 15–20 minutes; traveling here just for the sake of it is not very rational. Align with anything else. For example, with a visit to Soline Bay.

Soline Bay is a healing mud beach. Passing by, we saw crowds of "negroes" smeared from head to toe. “I wonder if this helps them?” My beloved asked. “I think they’ve just begun,” I replied. I don’t know if the therapeutic effect of the procedures is proved, but people got a lot of pleasure and vivid selfies.

Excursions from Krk: Istrian cities, Venice, Trieste, Slovenia, islands (Lošinj, Cres, fish picnics, fishing), Rijeka, Crikvenica, Opatija and Volosko, Krka National Park (Attention! Krka National Park is located on the mainland, and not on the island Krk), Zagreb. But why do you need to go somewhere when you are in Krk ?!

Food at Krk.Describing other cities, we do not particularly dwell on food descriptions: everywhere everything is as always, but on the AAC - better.

I already wrote that we traveled with a guide in our hands, and he shamelessly tripled about everything in the world. Therefore, the phrase “seafood in Krk is especially good” was not enthusiastic ... And then we decided to have dinner in the walls of the city, in an institutionFrankopan: the best octopus salad of all time (honestly, a year later I still want the same), a delicious tuna steak and a fragrant, soft, warm bread cake - perhaps your grandmother once baked it like that. My hell.

Separately - about the wines. There is a winery on the islandKatunar. You can ask for a tasting and make purchases (you can bring a maximum of two liters per person across the border) in one of the company’s stores on the island. But the best you can think of is to go to the vineyardsKatunar near Vrbnik. In the same place - try wine and champagne, sweets, jams, jams. Pink came to us the mostBisermora. We traveled in the summer, and did not want to carry bottled wine in the red-hot trunk of the car. They believed the consultants that their products can be found in all major trading networks of the country and ... it was a fatal mistake: not in the networksPemo nor inBilla nor inKonzum WinesKatunar we did not find.

It’s most convenient to combine a visit toKatunar on the way to the city of Krk from Vrbnik - almost on the road.

VineyardsKatunar on the island of Krk.

Where to live? The best place is in the sleeping areas adjacent to the center. The historical center is also romantic and good if you are not in a car (otherwise you might not have to go to your apartment) and not with huge suitcases (several times one hundred meters) along the cobblestones, without the possibility to park under the house - that’s still fitness.

 • Krk is the most strategically right place to be in the thick of things and conveniently get to all places of interest.
 • Vrbnik - for a classic hotel holiday.
 • Baska - for those who like to relax in a busy hotel zone with a small historical center within walking distance.

Any other town on the coast is for the clear sea and kilometer-long beaches.

If you prefer hotel rest, the most offers will be in the cities of Krk, Malinska, Baska, Silo, Njivice, Punat. Five-star hotels, as well as throughout the country, are few, less than 25. But there are good, “strong” fours, family guest houses and numerous apartments.

There are very few hotels working on the all inclusive system, but why do you need them, wherever you are, in the walking distance there will be konoby, which prepare today's seafood, fresh vegetables and fruits?

I continue to recommend staying in apartments: value for money, comfort, quality, area, stabilitywi-fi in Croatia is better in apartments. In addition, we checked at Krk and recommend two whole accommodation options: .

Bye, Krk!We absolutely did not want to leave. Clean beaches, gentle sun, clear water, beautiful towns, delicious food and wine, hospitable people - what else is needed for relaxation ?! But ahead was the most interesting:, Plitvice Lakes, must-see Sibenik, impregnable Trogir, reckless Zadar, ancient Split, dear Makarska and, of course, the love of my life - Dubrovnik! Read on!

TOURIST RESPONSES:

The capital of the island of Krk, bearing the same name - the city of Krk with its almost 2,000-year-old ancient fortress walls (among other things, the third largest in Croatia), Frankopan Castle, the old 16th century mayor's office and the Krk Cathedral, whose towers proudly rise above the city, are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia. As, however, the whole island.

But I believe that the city of Krk should be considered separately from the island, in which there are enough interesting places without it.

Krk is located in the southwestern side of the island, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. The city has a car connection with the mainland, with Rijeka. There, in the north of the island, a huge Krsky bridge was built, representing a truly unique architectural structure. But this is far - 25 kilometers.

Historically, among all the cities on the island, the city of Krk has always been considered the main one, it had this status from the very beginning of the settlement of the island. Krk is a very ancient city, one of the oldest on the entire Adriatic, it dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. In those days, this Roman city was called Curicum. The current name of the city is a very abbreviated version of its original name. Currently, the city is the cultural and historical center of the island.

Krk today looks like a well-fortified city, with thick fortified walls along its entire length. City walls and are a characteristic distinguishing feature of Krk, these fortifications were built at different times, but the beginning of their construction dates back to the beginning of our era. The city walls were repeatedly destroyed by the conquerors, but rebuilt anew, the fundamental construction of the walls dates back to the 12th century. Then it was erected kuplin tower - one of the most remarkable and ancient objects of the wall. Construction Frankopanov Castle, which is also part of the fortification of Krk, dates from the XII-XIV centuries. After the city came under the jurisdiction of Venice (it happened in the XV century), the fortress walls began to strengthen even more. At this time (the end of the XV - XVI century), the most powerful sections of the wall, the city gates, and also characteristic of that era, were built cylindrical tower.

The most important legacy in Krk, of course, is sacred religious complexconsisting of three churches: Ascension Cathedral, Franciscan and Benedictine monasteries with their churches.

Franciscan and Benedictine Monasteries were built in the period from XII to XIII century. There really is something to see. You can see the life of monks, look at household items. Monastery churches are decorated with ancient icons. Although, in truth, the monasteries are not very noticeable against the background of another, more worthy object for inspection.

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the XII century on the remains of Roman terms. Although initially, in the V century, a small Christian basilica was built here. In its modern form, the Cathedral with its characteristic Byzantine dome is not only a decoration and a visiting card of the city, but also a magnificent monument of historical architecture. Two departments of the Renaissance are simply masterpieces of art; they were once donated by the Francopans. The bishops of Krk are also buried in the church. The bell tower of the cathedral is decorated with an angel figurine with a pipe, which can be seen from almost anywhere in the city.

Not far from the Cathedral is Basilica of St. Quirinbuilt in the 12th century. This basilica has the oldest wall painting on the island (X-XI century). By the way, this is the only two-level (two-nave) church in Croatia. I do not quite understand what this means; I myself did not enter this basilica. I read that there was also a third nave, but during the expansion of the street it was destroyed.

In the same area of the city is located Museum of Religious Art.

In the very center of Krk is Vela Platz square. The area is surrounded by steep hills, on the slopes of which you can see the traditional houses of local residents. This is the so-called archaeological site of Volsonis.

Also located in the city ancient Roman Forum (more precisely, what has been preserved from it). Here now you can see a stone well, built during the reign of the Romans. During the reign of the Republic of Venice, a town hall and a city government building were built on this square.

Krk has a reputation as a city for a day trip. However, its port can serve as a starting point for many trips, such as nearby islands such as Rab or Cres.

Helpful answer?

Island Krk is the northernmost in Croatia and one of the largest islands in the Adriatic Sea, located in the Kvarner Bay, east of the Istrian Peninsula.

Krk is an ideal place to learn about the heritage of Croatia.

Besides the capital of the island, the ancient city of KrkThere are other objects that are no less interesting to visit. For example, on the island in many places there are floor mosaics preserved from the time of the Roman Empire, numerous ancient Croatian churches and other monuments of ancient architecture, including Illyrian culture.

1. It’s probably worth starting with the city of Vrbnik (Vrbnik), located on the top of a high cliff and surrounded on one side by the fertile vineyards used in the production of the famous and high-quality wine Vrbnička Zlahtina (Zhlakhtina). On the other hand, by the Adriatic Sea. Vrbnik is a very small city located just 6 kilometers from the city of Krk. Now it is one of the best preserved fortress cities in Croatia. But first of all, the city is famous for its vineyards and excellent wine.

Vrbnik is a city you have never seen before. Walking past old houses and heading to its narrow streets, you are transported hundreds of years ago in time, not noticing this at all. You do not need to know anything about the history of Croatia and the island of Krk, but as soon as you enter Vrbnik, you will immediately understand everything: here history comes to life at every turn. You will feel the traditional way of life, the connection of man and nature, because here life depends on the vine that feeds the city (and this is not an allegory). Vrbnik comes alive graciously when the year is fertile and humbly passes in a less successful year. Zlahtina grapes are grown in the Vrbnik Valley, from which dry white wine and champagne are then produced. The name comes from the adjective "zlahten", which in Slavic dialect means "noble." This grape variety came to the island of Krk at the end of the 19th century, and in the Vrbnik valley between about two world wars and is now cultivated only in the Vrbnik valley.

Leading a humble lifestyle, the inhabitants of the city initially did not seek to make Vrbnik a particularly attractive place for tourism, but this happened by itself. Time has shaped the city as a destination for travel, and now every visitor to the island of Krk just must come here to try the wine Vrbnička Zlahtina along with other gastronomic features of the island.

After enjoying great food, you can stroll through this unusual city on a cliff and get acquainted with the culture of the island and its traditions. And in the end, do not forget to walk along one of the narrowest streets in the world, only 50 cm wide. It is called Klancic.

2. Omisal city (Omisalj) with a history dating back to the 3rd century AD.

This city is one of the oldest cities not only on the island of Krk, but also in Croatia as a whole. Acquaintance with the city of Omisal begins almost instantly after crossing the bridge connecting the mainland and Krk, as this will be the first city you will encounter on the island.

The city itself is built on a cliff above the sea with a panoramic view of the Kvarner Bay, the highest point of the cliff has a height of about 80 meters above sea level. Omisal retained its medieval city structure. Residential buildings have preserved their original appearance of typical rural houses of the island of Krk - many houses have external stairs next to the arched entrance on the ground floor and a balcony above the arched entrance. The charming historic old center of Omisal with its narrow streets is also, for the most part, a pedestrian zone.

On the main square of the city is the large parish Church of the Assumption with the bell tower and chapel of Elena.

In addition, on the edge of the cliff there is an excellent walking path and a viewing platform, all this is ideal for romantic evenings.

I think that history buffs will also be interested in visiting the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Fulfinum, they are almost next to Omisal.

It is also interesting that it is near Omisal that the international airport of Rijeka is located. Such is the paradox.

3. Picturesque islet Koszlun with a museum inside a monastery located on an islet.

Kosljun (Croatian Košljun) is a small island located in the bay of the island of Krk. The island is really small, its coastline is a little more than 1 kilometer! However, Koszlun is the most significant of the other islands belonging to the Krk archipelago, as it is a natural and cultural phenomenon.

Here you need to understand correctly: on the island of Krk there is the city of Punat, which is located directly on the shore of a large bay. About the middle of this bay, in fact, is the island of Koszlun. The distance from the island of Krk is not more than 200 meters, on the shore there is a pier. And if the town of Punat itself is unremarkable, with the exception of the production of excellent olive oil (but this is not a tourist attraction), then there is an interesting object on the island of Koszlun. It is ancient but valid franciscan Monastery. Its definitely worth a visit.

The entire population of Koszlun is made up of Franciscan monks, there are 5 of them. On the territory of the monastery is the Church of the Annunciation of Mary with several chapels. There are as many as three museums in the monastery buildings: architectural, ethnographic and church art. We can say that through the efforts of the monks the island is almost completely ennobled. The monastery has its own small botanical garden and is surrounded on all sides by olive groves.

4. Church and monastery in Glavotok (Glavotok).

Glavotok is a small fishing village on the western side of the island of Krk. The attraction of this village is the Franciscan monastery (Franjevacki samostan), built directly on the sand spit. At the end of the 15th century, the Francopans gifted this scythe to the Franciscan tertiary, who at that time used the verb to write their texts. Therefore, if you are interested in writing in the Glagolitic alphabet, I recommend visiting Glavotok. The Franciscan monastery was finally built in the 16th century; it was previously rebuilt several times. Now in the monastery are kept numerous works of Italian masters. The most important, of course, is the archive of the monastery with its manuscripts in the Glagolitic alphabet.

5. Baska.

Baska (Croatian Baška) is a famous seaside resort in Croatia, located in the south of the island of Krk. But not only this attracts tourists here. There are many ancient churches in the village and its environs.

Here is a small digression. Island Krk is considered the cradle of Croatian writing. This is due to the fact that near the city of Baska, in 1851 the Bashchansk table was found. More precisely, in the village of Jurandvor in the church of St. Lucia. The stove was built into the floor of the ancient church, where it was discovered.

Following the logic, it got its name from the village of Baska. In fact, the table is a stone slab with entries in the Croatian language (Glagolitic writing). To date, this table has been and remains the oldest monument of Croatian writing. Really worth exploring!

In addition, in the town of Baska there is a famous aquarium with saltwater fish in Croatia.
