Where to go in Switzerland in winter. Switzerland what to see. North of Zurich

The nature of our planet is striking in its beauty and uniqueness. Absolutely every corner of the earth is particularly picturesque. Recently, tourists prefer to travel to those cities that have sea and beach. However, if you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city and dream of spending your vacation in a quiet and incredibly beautiful place, and not sunbathing on the beach among a host of other vacationers, we recommend spending a weekend in the mountains in Switzerland. It is there that you can relax not only with your body, but also with your soul.

Location of the federal republic on the world map. Features of Switzerland

Switzerland on the map is distinguished primarily by the presence of three natural regions. It is believed that it is in this federal republic that about 6% of fresh water deposits are located. Switzerland's highest point is Dufour Peak. Its height is more than 4 thousand meters. The lowest - It is located at a distance of almost 200 meters from the ground. Switzerland attracts tourists with its picturesque nature and healing lakes. The latter formed as a result of a glacier fault. They are characterized by the presence of a huge amount of healing mud, which, as locals say, can cure any disease.

Switzerland on the map is also distinguished by the presence of a large number of forest areas. They occupy about 25% of the country.

Alps

It is worth noting that in the summer in Switzerland it is quite hot. The temperature during the day is from 35 degrees Celsius. The only salvation from the summer heat is the Swiss Alps. There, a tourist can stay in a small city, which is located at an altitude of just over 1000 meters. In this locality, the traveler will be able to find a hotel, a large number of cafes, restaurants and sports shops. It is worth noting that most of the population is residents of retirement age.

We recommend staying at the Cambrian Hotel. It is this hotel that features rooms with superb views of the Swiss Alps. Even the most demanding tourist will be satisfied. It is also worth noting that at the foot of the Swiss Alps you can buy cheese that locals are proud of. It is completely natural and environmentally friendly. Such an acquisition will definitely appeal to you.

Incredible fact

In 2011, after conducting a lot of research, scientists came to the conclusion that the Swiss Alps are still in the process of formation. This is no coincidence, because every year their height increases by 1 millimeter. Experts believe that, most likely, with a powerful earthquake, the growth rate will increase significantly. After that, the height of the Swiss Alps will be about seven thousand meters. Scientists believe that this will happen in about a couple of million years.

Matterhorn

Mount Matterhorn is located in the area of the Swiss-Italian border. Its height is almost 4.5 thousand meters. It is about this mountain that a huge number of books have been written. She impresses with her beauty and bizarre shape. Mount Matterhorn attracts not only tourists, but also climbers. Sometimes even entire queues line up there. However, it is worth noting that the mountain is quite loose and for this reason rockfalls sometimes occur there. That is why we strongly recommend climbing it only in the presence of an experienced guide.

Jungfrau

Mount Jungfrau and the area around it are quite a popular holiday destination. Here you can not only take a walk, but also ride a bike. In total, about 80 routes of various lengths pass through the mountain. An undoubted advantage is the presence of viewing platforms. There, every tourist can make a halt and better see the mountain peaks of Switzerland.

Few people know, but it is on Mount Jungfrau that the highest railway station is located. There tourists can visit restaurants, cafes and small shops with souvenirs. Also at this amazing station is the Ice Museum. In it, tourists can see the most diverse sculptures of people and animals.

On the observation deck, which is located on the top of the mountain, many people feel dizzy from the fresh air. We strongly recommend that you be careful not to get to the edge. Few people know, but Mount Jungfrau was listed as a UNESCO heritage site 15 years ago.

Eiger

Mount Eiger is located in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. Its height is almost 4 thousand meters. First conquered the top of the mountain in 1858. On Eiger, the weather is almost always bad. Surprisingly, the mountain is completely covered in ice. Climbing the Eiger slopes is done only by experienced climbers. This is no coincidence. Eiger is one of the ten most dangerous peaks. Few people know, but the name itself testifies to this. Eiger translated from German - "cannibal". The most dangerous section on it is considered a deadly wall with a length of 2 kilometers. Often, on this gap in the mountains ice blocks are strewn, which, of course, pose a danger to the health and life of tourists. Already during the very first ascent of Eiger, more than 60 people died. It is worth noting that only two routes for beginners were laid on Mount Eiger. The remaining 20 are for experienced climbers only.

Bernin Massif and Niderhorn Rock

The Bernina mountain range is the highest in the Eastern Alps. Its peaks rise 4 thousand meters above sea level. This mountain range is one of the most isolated. In Bernin there are more than 100 glaciers.

Mount Niederhorn is located in the western part of Switzerland. Its height is almost 2 thousand meters. From the top of the cliff offers a great view of Lake Thun and the Alps. The path to the mountain was laid in 1946. At the same time, a playground and a small restaurant were installed there. Today, the first cable car is no longer in use. Built newer and more durable. It is worth noting that today there is a large number of cafes, shops, as well as a cozy and comfortable hotel.

Mount Niederhorn attracts tourists with its large number of caves. There is a legend that there used to be a hermit who completely equipped them for himself. Few people know, but more recently, a park was built near the caves, on whose territory there are not only a large number of restaurants, but also observation platforms that are located above the waterfalls. This view will not leave indifferent any tourist.

Switzerland climate in autumn

In the early autumn, the mountains in Switzerland are warm enough. However, the day is already decreasing and the wind is getting cooler. The air temperature in September is 18 degrees Celsius, and in November it is around 7. It is believed that November is the worst month to relax. At this time, Switzerland is cloudy, cold and windy. Light frosts are also possible. It is worth noting that in November evening comes early enough in Switzerland. It is for this reason that many tourists spend their days at bars and restaurants. Only at the end of the month the ski season opens.

Climate in Switzerland in winter

Mountains in Switzerland occupy more than half of the total territory. Winter is cold there. Temperature ranges from -10 to +3 degrees Celsius. There is snow everywhere. However, at this time of the year you should travel only with a professional guide. This is no coincidence, because, choosing the wrong path, you risk falling into an avalanche. Few people know, but the lower the ski resort is, the greater the nebula there. On higher slopes, the sun almost always shines. It is believed that the most successful time for skiing is the whole winter period and the first week of March.

It is worth paying attention that it is quite easy to get to Switzerland. You can choose a train, bus and plane. Their starting point is in Moscow. For example, a flight by plane will take no more than four hours. Surprisingly, the snow in Zermatt lies year-round. Arriving on a vacation in Switzerland, you will surely never forget it.

When to go to Switzerland

Summer to Switzerland

In summer, Switzerland is famous for its hiking trails, the warm sun in the valleys, blue lakes, and on the other hand, this whole summer landscape is covered with snow-white peaks of mountains and glaciers that never melt. In Switzerland, impeccable ecology, stunning landscapes, it is difficult to choose a certain best time to travel, it is unfortunate that under visa conditions, tourists from Russia or Ukraine can stay in this country for a rather limited time. Many Swiss ski resorts in the summertime look even more attractive.

Winter in Switzerland

Most tourists visit Switzerland in the winter from December to March and go as you understand to the ski resorts, it is especially good in this country for Christmas and New Year, though at this time the prices creep up a bit. It is interesting that cities such as Geneva and Zurich are visited more during the winter period, price increases can be expected for souvenirs and restaurants, so a trip to Switzerland can be very costly even for tourists from Western Europe.

Some peak season in July and August, but he still loses the winter. I’ll say that the summer in Switzerland does not lose anything to the cool and snowy winter, and prices are falling silently at that time, so decide for yourself. The low season in Switzerland is early spring and late autumn, although tourists can specially come to Switzerland for Easter week. It is very good to go to Switzerland for the May holidays. In the Low Season, almost all ski resorts are closed along with the hotels adjacent to them.

Offseason in Switzerland

Do not think that hotels greatly reduce prices in the off-season, because at this time, business travelers who travel to Switzerland for their businesses are activated.

To save money on hotels, you can take a sightseeing trip to Switzerland from April to June, in September and October, summer begins on the mountain passes, at which time they are completely exempt from snow. The mild climate awaits travelers in the south of Switzerland, you can go here in late autumn.

Beach season in Switzerland

The beach season in Switzerland is fleeting and runs from the end of July to the end of August, this applies to Lake Geneva, slightly wider than the season on the lakes near the Italian border, this applies to Lake Lugansk and Lake Maggiore. Remember that the coldest is Lake Geneva, the temperature in it is unlikely to exceed 20 degrees, a little warmer Lake Zurich to 23 degrees, the warmest Lake of Lugansk to 25 degrees.

Ski season in Switzerland

The ski season runs from December to the end of March, if you go in January, you will find a lot of all kinds of festivals. In the highlands of Switzerland there are serious snow deposits, there is a high probability of avalanches and the amount of precipitation. For example, in Engelberg there is snow 3 meters high. If you want more sun at any time of the year, choose a region a little higher, fog is constantly standing in the lowlands of Switzerland.

Many foreign tourists prefer to live in Zurich, from there go on excursions to Basel, Lucerne, Bern and Geneva, if your goal is French-speaking Switzerland, then it is better to live in Lucerne and Montreux, from here not far to the Golden Pass. The most expensive city in Switzerland is Geneva, followed by Zurich, followed by Lucerne, Berne and Basel. There is nightlife in Zurich, in other cities after 8 pm there is nothing to do, especially in winter. It is already dark at 4 p.m., and this winter holiday in Switzerland is unpleasant. Basel is very good at Christmas holidays, cozy, there is a good fair, of course Basel is slightly inferior to Christmas Zurich where there are several Christmas markets and the main Christmas tree in Switzerland.

Holidays in Switzerland - at any time of the year - a synonym for quality, excellent service and not in vain spent (albeit often often considerable) money. Switzerland as a tourist destination is not as popular as other European neighbors - at least the closest France, Germany and Italy; however, noisy crowds of tourists would only hurt this unique country in all respects, destroying the fragile and charming atmosphere of a European country with a rich and glorious history, carefully preserved traditions and noble, not pompous, dignity.

Holidays in Switzerland - pluses and ... pluses

Switzerland is a universal destination. No matter what inclinations tourists may have, this country is guaranteed to find something for them to their liking. This is confirmed by the frequency with which Switzerland flashes in the catalogs of tour operators. An interesting excursion program? There is, and even what: Zurich and Basel, Bern, Lucerne and Geneva can boast an amazing number of attractions for such a small country, both historical, cultural and natural. Ski resorts? For every taste: high-society and democratic, located in the foothills of the Alps and the "high-altitude", ordinary and on the glacier, where you can ride in the midst of the summer heat. Holidays on the lakes? Please - Geneva, Zurich, Lucerne, Lugansk and Maggiore - each with a lot of cozy resort towns, a string of spa hotels and a rich cultural life in the kit. Treatment? It may not be as famous as in some Baden or Karlovy Vary, but with the closest attention to the client, in the healing air and miraculous mineral water. Finally, shopping, in addition to the obvious quality (who do not know the Swiss watches!), May be beneficial here - for this, you should go to Switzerland during the New Year sales period or visit the largest outlet “Foxstown” with more than 250 stores of famous brands.

Surprisingly, in Switzerland there is one of the most attractive places for diving in the world - the cleanest river Verzaska, at the bottom of which you can spend hours looking at the stones of all conceivable colors, and looking up, enjoy the almost undistorted water thickness of the coastal life.

In winter ...

Winter is the “X-hour” for Switzerland and the time of the most significant number of tourists on its hospitable lands. Ski resorts in Switzerland accept millions of adherents of skiing and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowboarding and other types of entertaining "transport". The love of tourists for winter Switzerland is quite understandable: at the local snow resorts there is, without exaggeration, everything necessary for a quality and comfortable stay. Alps cover more than half of the state, and a chain of majestic ranges stretches along the southern border of the country for 200 km. What enthusiastic skiers especially appreciate is the steady number of glaciers providing a reliable “refrigerator” under the slopes. When the July heat is in the valleys, in Zermatt and Saas-Fee you still know how to cut a snow virgin snow and ride on snowmobiles along immaculately fluffy white valleys.

A separate line is worth mentioning the opportunity to combine a ski holiday with a sightseeing holiday, which is especially suitable for those families where not all households are eager to join the exciting everyday life of a skier. While the sporty-minded part of the family is exploring new slopes, its passive members may well set off to explore the numerous sights of Swiss cities. For example, the ski resorts of the canton of Bern - Grindelwald or Gstaad - are only half an hour from the capital of the country, so it’s not difficult to pay a visit to the Bears in the Bear Pit, pay tribute to Einstein and Paul Klee, check the time on the Clock Tower or familiarize the offspring with didactic fountain "Children Eater".

Traveling in Switzerland

in summer...

Switzerland in the summer is slightly inferior to the tourist “population” of the winter season - but not at all because there is nothing to do from May to September - just the “thousand-strong” Alps are a tidbit for skiers from around the world. Summer Switzerland gives the tourist a comfortable and not hot beach holiday on the picturesque shores of any of the 16 lakes of the country, excellent conditions for excursions at least for days at an average air temperature of +22 .. +26 ° C and a lot of opportunities for active activities - from hiking to climbing, mountain bike and even diving.

The recreational wealth of Switzerland is evidenced by at least the nickname given to the northern coast of Lake Geneva - the Swiss Riviera. However, other lakes are not inferior to this. Montreux and Vevey - resorts with a rich history that have seen many representatives of royal families, writers, artists and musicians with world renown - in addition to exceptional relaxation and very high-quality treatment (in particular, the world famous La Prairie Clinic is located here) can offer a serious “excursion” (which is worth at least Chillon Castle!) and a brilliant cultural life: the Montreux Jazz Festival has been hosting the best performers on the planet for almost half a century.

... and at any time of the year

However, we digress from exclusively summer or only winter vacations in Switzerland - after all, a vacation may well fall during the off-season. Hurry to reassure the "spring" and "autumn" tourists - charming Switzerland will be able to please you at any time of the year. Firstly, recall that you can ski in the country's ski resorts year-round. Secondly, although a vacation on the lakes, for example, in April or in October, will not be pleased with the comfortable temperature of the water, nobody canceled the relaxation in the top-class spa centers. Thirdly, Switzerland has a certain unsolved charm, thanks to which you do not feel sad here even in the most bad weather. Finally, we mention the sights of Switzerland: the capital of Bern can boast, for example, such unique places as the Europe’s best History Museum, the old Clock Tower with a whole procession of figures marking the end of every hour, and real bears in the very center of the Old Town . In Lucerne, you should see the oldest covered Kapellbrücke pedestrian bridge in Europe, the incredible Glacier Garden, a stunningly interesting Transport Museum with exhibits from car models to a real airplane and nine old towers, each of which is different from the goods. In a word, any Swiss city will certainly find something to charm tourists of all ages, nationalities and interests - just come!

Switzerland is a unique country, which, if possible, is worth a visit in any case. And not only to see how rich she is, but to enjoy her extraordinary beauty and amazing calm and calm. Driving through the Swiss cities, walking along the streets of any city, you can only marvel at the silence and confidence prevailing everywhere. Do not be surprised if in the evening, even driving into the capital of Switzerland, Bern, you will see empty streets. It's quite normal. People are used to working here and making money, rather than wasting time on wasting time. Therefore, prepare in advance for the fact that in the evening in the very center of any city, even the capital, you can see mainly tourists walking. At the same time, being in the same place in the morning, you will marvel at the traffic filling the streets: rushing people, cyclists in business suits and helmets, and beautiful buns from a coffee seller. Although large tourist centers, of course, are an exception to this rule, demonstrating a vibrant nightlife.

If you are planning a vacation to Switzerland, it is worth remembering that this is perhaps the most expensive European country. Therefore, prices in stores can, to put it mildly, a little scary. Even for a magnet, in most cases, you will have to pay about 10 - 12 euros, which can not be compared even with French or German 4 - 5 in tourist centers. Although some products are not so different in cost. For example, some clothing brands adhere to approximately the same ... read more

The modest charm of Graubunden, or how we were "stuck" in the vicinity of St. Moritz.

In winter, when traveling around Switzerland, silence, peace and the unique Swiss atmosphere there “sucks” that you want to stay anywhere for a long time.

What happened to us on the way to St. Moritz. We drove through Graubünden, the easternmost region of Switzerland, and headed for the famous resort of Davos. Unusual clean streets, the silence is such that you can hear snowflakes falling from the sky, and suddenly ... the sound of horse hooves, and a picturesque wagon as if from the last century sailed past us. It seems to be the twenty-first century, trendy cars scurry around that they lost such an outdated mode of transport here?

According to an old legend, when the Lord distributed the wealth of the earth's bowels, they did not have enough for a country in the very heart of Europe, Switzerland. To correct this injustice, God gave her high mountains, shining glaciers, stormy waterfalls, picturesque valleys, beautiful rivers and clear azure lakes. Unusually beautiful views of Switzerland attract thousands of tourists, it is like a special world - magical and bewitching, making you believe that paradise does exist. And it doesn’t matter what time of year the journey takes, the landscapes of Switzerland will not disappoint in any season and in any weather.

The climate in Switzerland as a whole can be called moderate, however, it is very generalized, because each canton, depending on its geographical location, has its own landscape and climate. Switzerland's natural areas are diverse - from the Arctic to the tropics: mosses and lichens grow high in the mountains, coniferous and deciduous forests cover the slopes, and in the south of the country, on the lakeside, lush southern greens of cypresses, magnolias and palm trees are pleasing to the eye. Switzerland in winter attracts tourists with its famous ski resorts, in summer the mountains and passes of Switzerland are met with amazing landscapes, and crystal clear lakes - with beach vacations, the level comparable to the resorts of the Mediterranean Sea.

Holidays in the Swiss Alps

Switzerland and mountains are two inseparable concepts, because mountains occupy more than half of the country. Three natural regions are distinguished in Switzerland: the Jura mountain range stretches in the north-west, the Swiss plateau in the center and the Alps, which occupy the entire southeast of the country. According to scientific data, the Alps appeared as a result of a collision of tectonic plates in ancient times, but, amazingly, researchers claim that the Swiss Alps are still in the process of formation - their height increases every year, however, only by one millimeter. Experts believe that a powerful earthquake can cause more rapid growth of the mountains, and they will reach 7 thousand meters, however, this can happen very, very soon, in about a couple of million years.

The Swiss Alps stretch for almost 200 kilometers, representing unique landscapes of beautiful mountain passes and valleys, sloping slopes and snow-capped peaks.

Holidays in the Swiss Alps in winter are, of course, ski resorts, which are considered the best in the world. The abundance of snow, impeccable slopes, the best skiing training, cozy hotels, cafes and restaurants with excellent cuisine, the highest level of service - everything is created here for a perfect vacation. Sports fans will find excellent slopes for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and airboarding, toboggan runs, ice skating grounds and even ice diving. Fans of more relaxed leisure time will be offered hiking, sledding, thermal springs, winter fishing, acquaintance with the unique culture and traditions of Switzerland, so this is not just a vacation, but a real winter come true fairy tale!

The Swiss Alps in the summer are attracted primarily by their stunning mountain panoramas, but the rest, of course, will not be limited to simply contemplating the beauties. In almost any region of the Alps, tourists are offered bike tours and hiking routes of varying difficulty, and some of the most beautiful places in Switzerland can only be reached on foot, and beginners and experienced climbers will try their hand at the Alps. In any case, all tourist routes lie among the unique beauty peaks and valleys with colorful villages, and in each, even the smallest, they will certainly offer accommodation with maximum comfort. By the way, all night halts take place only in special mountain shelters, you can’t sit here by the fire - you can only make fire in emergency cases to attract the attention of rescue services, and you can set up a tent camp only far from the shelters and only for the night from 8 pm to 8 a.m. The summer Alps will also be found with their amazingly beautiful and clean lakes, some of which are suitable for diving, windsurfing or fishing.

Mount Matterhorn

The most famous mountain peak in the Alps is the Matterhorn, located in the Pennine Alps on the very border of Switzerland and Italy. The peak, which has an almost regular pyramidal shape, rises far from other peaks, among the plains and low hills, so nothing prevents you from admiring it from all sides and, perhaps, this isolation gives Mount Matterhorn so much charm. Matterhorn is much more likely than other attractions to fall into the lenses of travelers' cameras. On this occasion, the locals even made a joke that for tourists on a trip to Switzerland, the main thing is that the Matterhorn was in the background in the photo. However, the Swiss themselves could not but appreciate the beauty of this mountain, not without reason the producers of the world famous Swiss chocolate Tobleron placed its image on the packaging of their products, and in 2004 Matterhorn took pride of place on a commemorative gold coin of 50 francs. So this mountain can be safely considered a symbol of Switzerland!

The Matterhorn rises 4478 meters above sea level, if you look closely, you can see that the mountain has two peaks located at a distance of about a hundred meters from each other. One of them, located in the east of the ridge, is called the Swiss peak, and the western one, which is only one meter lower than its “neighbor”, is called Italian, but they are not called so by country affiliation - both are located on the border itself, just on the eastern The first ascent was made from Switzerland, to the west - from Italy. By the way, Matterhon with its steep cliffs is one of the most extreme destinations for climbers, so for a long time the mountain remained impregnable, and only in 1865 a group of professional climbers managed to conquer the summit. But no matter how severe and dangerous the Matterhorn is, he invariably attracts climbers in any season.

Often, to admire the Matterhorn in its full glory, they climb the nearby Gornergrat mountain - a path to a height of more than three thousand meters can be overcome on foot or on a panoramic train that can overcome steep climbs. He will deliver to the very top, and along the way you will have amazing views of the forests and picturesque waterfalls.

At the foot of the Matterhorn there are well-known resorts: from the Italian side - Bray-Cervinia, and from the Swiss - Zermatt, which is one of the ten best resorts in the Alps by the quality of snow cover and ski slopes. In summer, Zermatt invites fans of hiking, climbers and just lovers of a relaxing holiday and landscapes of Switzerland. You can get to Zermatt by train from the major cities of Switzerland, Milan, Stuttgart and Munich. By car you can get to the resort of Tash, and from there take an electric taxi to Zermatt or take an electric bus.

Mount Pilatus in Switzerland

In central Switzerland, southeast of the city of Lucerne rises Mount Pilatus - no less famous than the Matterhorn, but if the latter became famous thanks to the image on the chocolate, then Pilatus gained celebrity because of the legends associated with it. According to one version, the name of the mountain translates as “wear a hat” - its top is densely shrouded in clouds, it seems as if in fact it is dressed in a snow-white headdress. But a more common version explains the name of the peak by the name of Pontius Pilate - the procurator who condemned Jesus Christ to execution. Tradition says that Pilate, tormented by remorse, committed suicide, and then his body was thrown into the Tiber, but the river did not accept the sinner and carried the remains ashore. The same thing happened when trying to drown the body of a suicide in the Rhone and Lake Geneva, after which he was taken to a remote corner of the Alps and thrown into a deep pond at the foot of a high mountain. After that, the peak was called Pilatus, and the locals believed that the restless soul of the procurator was wandering along the mountain paths, and woe to the one who met him. And even so, Pontius Pilate constantly brought trouble - villages in the vicinity of the mountain suffered from rockfalls, mudflows, floods and hurricanes. This went on for a long time, until one theologian student who was fond of black magic, ensured that the soul of the procurator began to appear only once a year, but for several centuries the authorities, believing the legend, forbade anyone to climb the mountain. And in the Middle Ages, it was believed that winged dragons live here, guarding palaces with innumerable riches and kidnapping beautiful girls.

Fortunately, the days when people were afraid to visit Pilatus have sunk into oblivion, because this mountain is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland, and tourists with great pleasure climb to its top to enjoy the greatness of the mountain scenery, wonderful clean air and breathtaking entertainment.

The height of Pilatus is 2128 meters above sea level. There are three ways to get to the top: on foot (it takes about four hours to climb), by cable car from Kriens or by train from Alpnahstadt. This train, by the way, is the coolest in the whole world - the angle of inclination of the railway in places reaches 48 °, and only special gear wheels and rails allow it to overcome such a rise.

On top of Pilatus, tourists, in addition to breathtaking views, are waiting for a wide variety of leisure options. The winter Pilatus and the Snow & Fun park will give the most impressions - along four tracks of different lengths you can slide on sleds, snow scooters, “bagels” and other snow-entertaining modes of transport. From a height of a little less than one and a half thousand meters you can ride a toboggan - the useless sleigh of the Indians of North America or experience your own courage with the help of the Powerfan attraction, where you have to "fall" from a height of about 20 meters and only a daredevil will catch a thin rope. You should definitely go along the Dragon Pass route - the road will go through caves and grottoes, where the walls are painted with illustrations of legends about dragons - they were painted by the local artist Hans Ernie at the beginning of the 20th century. And, of course, restaurants with traditional Swiss cuisine and souvenir shops with cute little things will complement the impression of being on Mount Pilatus - one of the best and most mysterious places in Switzerland.

Lake Geneva

Switzerland is often called the "country of mountains and lakes", the mountains here really occupy a significant territory, and the lakes of Switzerland, which number more than one and a half thousand, are distinguished by their extraordinary beauty and crystal clear water. The largest lake in the Swiss Alps and the second largest freshwater pond in Central Europe is Lake Geneva, lying in the floodplain of the Rhone, locals often call it Leman.

Lake Geneva even in the photo shakes with its splendor, what to speak of when you see it with your own eyes! It simply fascinates with its pristine beauty and unusually deep and clear color of water, it is often compared with a mirror - the Alps cover it from the wind so reliably that the water surface is almost always unshakable, and it looks like mountain peaks, vineyards, tall spruce houses and medieval castles on the slopes.

A crescent-shaped Swiss lake is located on the border with France, more precisely, the border passes just in the middle of the reservoir. Numerous resort towns stretch along the northern coast, which belongs to Switzerland, which are called the Swiss Riviera for luxury and respectability. Lake Geneva is protected from the cold northerly winds by the Alps mountain ranges, therefore a pleasant mild climate reigns here, and the coast is buried in the greenery of subtropical plants. A beach holiday in Switzerland is truly unique - only here you can sunbathe on the beach, admiring the snow-capped peaks of the mountains. However, the swimming season is quite short here - the water warms up very slowly and only becomes warm in July-August. Nevertheless, tourists can enjoy all kinds of water sports and cruises, as well as horse riding, cycling and hiking, golf, mountain climbing, paragliding and hot air ballooning.

One of the most impressive natural attractions of Switzerland is the Rhine Falls, located in the canton of Schaffhausen near the small town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall. Despite the fact that the height of the Rhine Falls is only 23 meters (from about a seven-story building), it is considered the largest in Europe, because it has no equal in terms of the volume of water that rushes down from the rocks - 250 cubic meters of water falls down every winter every second, in summer, during the period of rapid melting of mountain glaciers, up to 700 cubic meters of rock falls.

According to scientists, this waterfall is very ancient, began to form about 500 thousand years ago in the Ice Age, when huge masses of ice easily changed terrain and steeply turned river channels. Finally, the Rhine Falls acquired its appearance about 15 thousand years ago - this is how we can see it today.

The spectacle of the Rhine Falls is not only impressive, it is amazing to the depths of the soul - the width of the threshold reaches 150 meters, huge streams of water, with noise and thunder, fall down, and, swirling with snow-white foam, decay into millions of splashes that shimmer with a rainbow in the sun.

It is best to enjoy an unusually beautiful and formidable sight from the observation platforms. One of them departs from the shore and is pushed over the river, very close to the place where the waterfall falls, it seems that the water colossus is moving right at you and a wildly roaring stream is about to catch and carry away in an unknown direction. Another site is located on a high cliff, towering an island in the middle of the river, a small ship cruising from both banks will bring here. From this site, the Rhine Falls can be seen from above, from here it will not seem so formidable, but it will fascinate you with its amazing view for a long time.

It is easy to get to the Rhine Falls from Zurich through the cities of Winterthur, Schaffhausen, Newhausen or Bulach, you can do this either by car or by public transport - by train or bus, depending on the chosen route.

Swiss national park

For those who want to see all the true Alpine landscapes at once, the Swiss National Park located in the canton of Graubünden in the Engadine Valley will be an ideal place. An area of 172 square kilometers covers harsh bare rocks covered with thick pine forests and alpine and subalpine meadows dotted with fragrant flowers, inhabited by chamois, mountain goats, deer, moose, wolves, brown bears, foxes, lynxes, golden eagles and many other representatives of the animal of the world.

Swiss National Park is the oldest national park in Europe and the only one in Switzerland. The history of its creation is very interesting. By the beginning of the twentieth century, this territory was completely developed by man, and, as usual, in a very barbaric way - forests were cut down mercilessly, and poor natural resources were used thoughtlessly. In 1914, it was decided to completely stop any economic activity here and to trace how much nature is capable of self-healing. And the result was not long in coming - nature, freed from human intervention, took over - dense forests again rustled on the slopes, meadows covered with flowers, and animals and birds found refuge.

Today, the Swiss National Park continues to develop in a natural way and live a quiet, calm life, broken only by tourists, while the rules for visiting are very strict. Here, only walking is allowed, it is forbidden to go off paved paths, light bonfires, set up camps, leave any traces of your stay, fishing and hunting, picking herbs and flowers is prohibited, even for loud noises they can be fined. If you want to spend more time in the national park (you still can’t get around it in one day - the total length of the trails is 80 kilometers), then you can stay overnight at the Il Fuorn Hotel or the Chaman Kluozza hut, where guests will be provided with comfortable rooms and indulge in delicious national cuisine.

Entrance to the park is free, and nearby are free parking for cars. The best time to visit the park is considered to be the warm season, in winter it is also open, but only short walks along some trails cleared of snow are provided. But then, just in the winter, in the nearby village of Zernets, where the national park’s information office is located, winter sports competitions, festivals and marathons, farmers' markets are held, and you can go on an entertaining tour to the unusual village of Guarda, the 17th century.

The easiest way to get to the Swiss National Park is from Zurich by train to Zernets, and then transfer to the bus to the park or by car, the journey takes about 2.5-3 hours.

Verzaska River

Probably, the definition of “the best” is suitable for many places in Switzerland: the best ski resorts in Switzerland, the most picturesque lakes, the most beautiful mountains and the cleanest rivers are also located in Switzerland, and of these the most transparent in the world is Verzaska. It originates on the glaciers of the mountain with a height of 2864 meters and carries its waters to Lake Maggiore, located between Italy and Switzerland. The path of Verzaska lies through the picturesque valleys of the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, the length of the river is quite small - only 30 kilometers, but all this distance is replete with amazing landscapes - Verzaska runs between the mountain slopes, dressed in lush green chestnut forests and vineyards, and along the banks there are ancient stone buildings Swiss villages, which only adds to the charm of the breathtaking views. The depth of Verzaska in places reaches 15 meters, the water in it changes color from bright blue to emerald green and is so transparent that you can see the bottom strewn with multicolored stones to the smallest detail.

Many, seeing the purest Verzaska, feel the desire to plunge, however, the water in it is even icy in the hottest weather, its temperature does not exceed 10 degrees, and because of the strong undercurrents it is quite dangerous, as warnings on its banks warn it. But nevertheless, there are extreme people who can’t feel the cold, and even more heat-loving tourists have the opportunity to swim - along the channel there are natural indentations where the water manages to warm up to an acceptable temperature. Verzaska is especially popular among divers who are certainly not stopped by ice water, because they take stunning pictures from the bottom, the most spectacular are photos from the depths, where, through the crystal clear water column, banks and the sky with moving clouds are visible. The only thing that divers can’t see and capture is the underwater world of Verzaska, because, despite the clear water, there is absolutely no flora and fauna. For a long time it was believed that the reason for this is the increased acidity of the water, but studies conducted in 2009 showed that the PH composition of water is the most common, but why the flora and fauna in the river are absent, remains a mystery.

Of the land attractions of Verzaska, charming Swiss villages are noted, where the age of houses built of laminated gneiss stone reaches several hundred years; a stone arch bridge, built in the 17th century and called the Roman one, either for the authorship of Italians, or because of the similarity of architecture, and a gigantic stone dam 220 meters high. She gained worldwide fame thanks to the filming of one of the parts of the “Bond” “Golden Eye” - it was from her that Pete Brosnan from a great height effectively jumps into the water. By the way, anyone can repeat the breathtaking Bond trick - a bungee jumping platform is installed on the dam - if you have the courage, an unforgettable experience is guaranteed!

The most beautiful place of the Verzaski River is called the vicinity of the city of Locarno, you can get to it by train from Zurich, Basel or Lucerne. By car, the path will lie on the A2 highway to the Magadino airport, and then you need to turn onto the A13 highway.

Lauterbrunnen Valley

Seasoned travelers call the Lauterbrunnen Valley one of the most beautiful and amazing on the whole earth - in fact, it is a deep cleft, located between steep kilometer-long cliffs, the valley is eight kilometers long and no more than a kilometer wide. From here, three magnificent peaks open up - Jungfrau, Mengch and Eiger (translated as Virgin, Monk and Eater), landscapes of a mountain valley, but the main thing here is the numerous waterfalls. The name Lauterbrunnen itself is translated as “many springs”, in the valley there are 72 waterfalls, amazing in their beauty.

The journey to the waterfalls begins with a picturesque village, bearing the same name as the valley - Lauterbrunnen, it is here that you can book sightseeing tours or a guided walk.

The most famous and impressive waterfalls are Staubbach and Trummelbach. Staubbach amazes with its power and natural strength - melt water flows from 300-meter-high rocks, because of its great height, the water, reaching the earth, breaks down on stones and turns into the smallest water dust, resembling fog or cloud. Trummelbach waterfalls are the only in Europe located in the depths of the cliffs and accessible for visiting. For thousands of years, meltwater descending from the peaks washed spiral recesses in stone, through which rumbling streams, overcoming a dozen cascades, descend into the valley. You can get to the waterfall on the underground funicular, and then tourists, following the galleries and bridges, go down to the foot of the mountain, admiring the incredibly beautiful sight of running water.

The most beautiful places in Switzerland will be opened to the view from the top of the Schilthorn, which can be reached by lift. There, above, in addition to the observation deck, from where a panorama of eternal glaciers and mountain peaks opens, there is a rotating restaurant “Piz Gloria”, where the film about the famous agent 007 “At Her Majesty's Secret Service” was shot.

Another attraction of Lauterbrunnen is the Jungfrauban railway - its terminal station is located at an altitude of 3545 meters above sea level and is the highest railway station in the world and is called the "Top of Europe".

You can get to Lauterbrunnen by car or train from Zurich to Interlaken, from where an electric train runs to the valley.

The last ten kilometers of the Jungfrauban railway go in a tunnel, from where the train emerges into the dazzling whiteness of Switzerland's next natural attraction - the largest glacier in the Alps called Aletsch. Its length is approximately 25 kilometers, the area is about 120 square kilometers. Glaciers are formed from thickened layers of snow, which, under the influence of their own weight, turn into ice. Aletsch consists of three glaciers with an average thickness of about one hundred meters, glacier sleeves converging in Concordia reach a maximum thickness of about 1 thousand meters, here the glacier turns into a frozen river 1.5 km wide. The seeming silence and silence of Aletsch is deceptive - he lives and moves, sliding at a speed of 200 meters per year to the southeast, and at an altitude of about 1,500 meters above sea level, Aletsch turns into the Massa River, which flows into the Rhone.

Locals have always respected Aletsch with reverence and even fear, if it was mentioned in legends, they were certainly called the “white giant”, and this is not surprising - at night, sounds similar to moans and clanging of steel swords are distinctly heard from the glacier. Even skeptics cannot easily believe that a huge mass of ice creates them with their movement, and therefore there are many tales of ghosts and human souls languishing under the thickness of ice.

Despite the external coldness and inaccessibility of Aletsch, tourists are very pleased to go to see a unique glacier, frozen in a bizarrely curved canyon-gorge, covered with relict forest, the Bolshaya Aletsch sleeve, reminiscent of an ice-bound river or a man-made winter road, is especially interesting. Aletch looks very unusual in the summer, when the slopes of the canyon are covered with greenery of grass and flowers, and a snowy river lies beneath his feet in icy silence.

Since 2001, Aletsch has been under the protection of UNESCO, and is also included in the list of applicants for the title of "Seven Wonders of Nature."

Caves of St. Beatus

In the canton of Bern, not far from the town of Interlaken on the northeastern shore of Lake Thun, tourists will find a fascinating journey into the bowels of the rocks - into the caves of St. Beatus. According to legend, a long time ago wealthy parents sent their son Suetonius to study in Rome, but the met apostle Peter led him astray, and the young man left for religion, replacing the hot Italy with the mountains of Switzerland. Suetonius took a new name - Beatus and settled in a cave on Lake Thun, only for a start he had to fight with the terrible fire-breathing monsters that lived in mountain grottoes. For numerous good deeds, the locals began to revere him as a saint, and over time the caves gained the name of St. Beatus.

Since legends are associated with dragons, everything here reminds of mythical creatures - right at the entrance and in the cave there are figures of fire-breathing monsters, you can swim in the underground lakes in a boat in the form of a dragon, and even nature itself seems to support the legend - blocks of stone are stacked in places in a bizarre manner, which, in fact, resemble the terrible toothy mouths of a monster.

Caves and passages located at a depth of 500 meters merge into mysterious labyrinths, overgrown with stalactites and stalagmites more than 40 thousand years old, underground rivers flow here and even small waterfalls make noise. In one of the grottoes you can meet the "owner" - St. Beatus himself, and those who are interested in science can look into the Mineral Museum.

Not far from the caves there is a restaurant serving delicious dishes prepared according to old recipes, and on its roof from observation platforms you can admire the picturesque landscapes of Switzerland.
