Sailboat during the storm. Ship during the storm

Sailors often have to hear questions from the coastal inhabitants of the planet:
  - And how does it “swing”? Up and down, or what? Is the sea beautiful during a storm? Do you feel like sleeping from pitching? How do sailors endure it? Can the ship roll over? And just drown? - etc.

So, so that it would be clear to everyone, I will answer almost in order and, quite possibly, I will tell something besides this.

Everyone from the school bench knows that moving air streams in the horizontal direction is called the wind. And the faster these same flows move, the stronger the wind. Well, this is already clear even to me, and the reader must have grinned skeptically, saying that although they did not swim, we know. Honor to you for this and praise!

So let's get started.
Loading a ship in the port already takes into account the possibility of meeting a storm in advance, so the cargo is laid in the holds and securely fastened to avoid any movement in the sea or, at worst, to minimize movement. When loading, strict control of the draft of the vessel is carried out, which should not exceed the standards of stability and unsinkability acceptable for the vessel.

At the same time, the captain and his assistants study weather reports along the transition route and determine the most optimal route both commercially and in terms of safety.

Booted up, removed all unnecessary from the decks and went to sea ...

The storm usually does not crash right away. First, he makes himself aware of a severe swell that sways the ship from side to side or, if it is oncoming, the ship draws water with its bow and sometimes stern. Then atmospheric pressure begins to decrease. Sometimes smoothly, but more often sharply. And then the first flurry flies up, behind it more and more. After all, it is almost impossible to avoid meeting a storm, you can only choose a route where its impact on the ship will be minimal.
As soon as the ship begins to bury itself in the waves, the mechanics immediately begin to worry - the load on the main engine increases. The screw, jumping out of the water, “throws” turns and has to slow them down. The captain would give a command to reduce speed even without mechanics, but they always outstrip events by 2-3 hours, spoiling his mood, which is already not very ... It’s not without reason that the navigator claims that they are spoiled by vodka, women and mechanics. But the mechanics - vodka, women and the navigator ... There is nowhere to go - an average move, or even a small one.

To reduce the pitching, the captain chooses speed and course, and sometimes the ship does not go at all where it is needed. Nothing to do - the ship, crew and cargo are more important than the exact time of arrival at the port of destination.

The wind intensifies to a storm, the Ocean rolls many-meter gray-haired waves, the horizon due to sea spray is not visible at all, the wind whistles in gear. No romance! The crew, painted on shifts, is engaged in its usual work, if some important mechanism does not fail. Then - a half-liter, a rush and other troubles, which sometimes last for days on end.

Usually the watch on ships is four through eight. This means that the sailor on watch for four hours, then rests for eight hours. Do not believe what you read! In addition to shifts, ship specialists also have their own facilities, which are not always possible to maintain during shifts. So the seafarer's working day is not standardized ... Hence the marine vocabulary is also not standardized. What do you think? I wonder how the coastal man will react to the fact that he will be awakened for two weeks in a row at two in the morning because the unit in his charge has failed. And the man only left the watch at midnight!

A little distracted, but not in vain.

What is the pitching? I hasten to upset those who are sure that this is just "up and down." Guys, this is not a swing in the park! There you paid for a five-minute pleasure at a dachshund, and, having tumbled out, went to drink with beer or kvass. At sea, they pay sailors for the pitching. Only now it does not end in five minutes. If the ship came out of the storm a day later, then consider that he was lucky. Usually it lasts much longer, sometimes the whole transition takes many hours. So, pitching in the sea is burying your nose in the waves, rolling tens of tons of sea water on the deck, it’s the wild shaking of a ship that resonated with itself, these are powerful wave blows on the hull of the ship, from which bulwarks sometimes break, and a metal rail the fence simply rolls into rolls, this ... Sometimes this is the loss of deck cargo when reliable fastenings, as it seemed in the port, do not withstand. When a ship rolls on one side up to thirty degrees and after ten to twelve seconds lies with the same roll on the other side, it is difficult to catch yourself in space. Exit to open decks is forbidden, and nobody cancels the watch anyway, because shift is life in the truest sense of the word.

In the best case, the sailor hands over the watch, nothing happens to his supervisor and he goes to rest. Oh well. He is unlikely to sleep. For all eight hours of “rest” he will shudder with the ship, crawl, bowing out of bed, roll, listen to the rumble of something loose in the cabin or in the corridor and, having missed the time set for rest, he will wander first to the dining room or wardroom in order to scald with tea, and with eyes reddened by insomnia, he will write in a journal: "The shift took such and such ...". But it was not there! The captain, plague from the constant sticking out on the bridge and very upset because of his broken favorite mug, will send him back to the cabin, because the sailor arrived on the bridge in slippers, and not in shoes fixed firmly on his feet. Understanding the captain's innocence, but not accepting it by definition, the sailor glides down the stairs, thinking about the captain that which he would never have said out loud.

And the captain announces on the ship’s broadcast:
“Attention, after ten minutes, the entire deck crew will go out to fasten the box at the cargo hold number four on the starboard side!”

And do not look at the clock! Now it doesn’t matter - three in the afternoon or night. It is important to catch the box so that it does not fly overboard, destroying everything that comes in its way. The ship slows down to the minimum, making the starboard side leeward, gives the necessary orders to the starpier and the deck crew in life jackets, cursing, carefully selects the deck to catch this damned box with nothing inside. They will catch him, catch him and fix him, do not hesitate! The first officer will report to the captain and the ship will add a turn.

And here, unfortunately, the oncoming ship and according to the rules you must give way to it. We have to change course and the ship begins to chat even harder, and the speed drops to zero, because the headwind and waves are sometimes stronger than the ship's engine.

In the engine room, the storm is perceived even worse. As already mentioned, no one has canceled the watch and the watch mechanic and minder make regular rounds of the engine room, checking the parameters of all working mechanisms. Of course, the pitching in the “car” is much smaller than on the bridge, but everything is aggravated by the abundance of odors inherent in all mechanisms, the roar of the engine and heat, especially if the ship is stormy in the warm season. Then, in some places in the engine room, the temperature can exceed sixty degrees, but you still need to go there, because the cooling pump rumbles there and it must be checked.

Everyone knows that there is such a crappy thing as motion sickness. But no one knows her exact symptoms. It is generally accepted that with her “a tribute is given to the Lord of the Sea,” that is, the sailor is constantly sick. There are many. But someone else simply can’t eat during the pitching, and someone cracks everything non-stop, although in normal weather it looks like a normal person. And someone doesn’t react at all to chatter in any way. All these are symptoms of motion sickness. Even the third option - the lack of reaction to pitching - is also a kind of anomaly. There is a firm rule: only work is able to overcome this disease. You’ll lie in bed - Khan, you will never come to your senses while storming.

Can a ship roll over or drown? Maybe, of course, although modern ships are made with a very large margin of buoyancy, so such cases are extremely rare. They are simply impossible if all loading rules are followed, the hatch covers are reliably closed, the ship’s engine and steering wheel are working properly, and the crew competently controls the ship in stormy conditions.

After the storm, life does not seem more beautiful than before it. The crew begins to "count the wounds" caused by the storm and believe that there are always many. It can be bent rails, damaged bulwark racks, lifebuoys carried overboard, chain boxes flooded with water and much more. And on the decks and superstructures the faint of heart is better not to look. The recently painted “breadwinner” is completely burnt from the sea water and it will take a lot of time to return it to a decent appearance.

So it turns out that the sea is beautiful only from the coast. Although, you can not believe me, I will not be offended. And storms are part of the life of any sailor. Not very pleasant, but inevitable.

On modern cruise liners, almost everything is provided for an expensive elite vacation - restaurants, bars, pools, gyms, tennis courts. The refined interior of the cabin rooms is literally teeming with luxury. Resting in such conditions, people often forget that they are in the open ocean, and their life is in much greater danger than in a regular five-star hotel on land.

Sometimes nature reminds a person who is the master in the world. And often such reminders are very unpleasant and even dangerous for passengers. Modern pleasure craft are designed for collisions with severe storms. Although, despite the increased security measures, even they are sometimes not able to withstand the onslaught of the elements. Occasionally, crew members, passengers, or surveillance cameras manage to record events that take place on cruise ships during a storm. And judging by the videos, for many observers a storm is not a natural disaster, but a fun entertainment. But this is until the raging sea breaks into the interior of the ship, where people are located.

Below are seven shocking videos from cruise liners.

1. Raging races

This video was shot on a surveillance camera in 2010, 400 km from New Zealand during a severe storm. The cruise ship found itself in the very center of the raging elements. Some add fun music to this video and present what is happening as something comical, although there is clearly nothing funny about what is happening. As a result of the storm, dozens of people were injured, including serious ones, many loose furniture and belongings were broken or destroyed. After this incident, the cruise company introduced 25 percent discounts on the following cruises for all passengers on this tour in order to save a shaky reputation.

2. Cruel sea

This video was shot on some unidentified ship. Here, the furniture, as a result of the strongest roll of the ship, literally shatters into pieces. Tables along with vacationers are demolished and broken on walls and other furniture. This is especially evident at 1:43. In the middle of the surveillance camera recording, one can see how one of the women, despite a serious danger, stands in the middle of the room and tries to remove the raging chaos.

3. Deadly waves

One of the most creepy videos. The passenger managed to take it off at a time when huge waves were fighting overboard. This disaster occurred with a Greek cruise ship in 2010. The video shows how a huge wave breaks through the glass wall of the liner and quickly rushes into the ship. People desperately fought for their lives, but, unfortunately, the victims could not be avoided. During the storm, 2 people were killed and more than ten were injured. The tragic moment of the disaster is clearly visible at 26 seconds of recording.

4. Shots from a cruise ship or a new movie from James Cameron? Part I

This video was posted by one of the insurance companies involved in life and health insurance for those who go on sea cruises. The incident occurred in 2011 during a storm. The video shows how a giant wave breaks through a glass wall in one of the utility rooms.

5. Shots from a cruise ship or a new movie from James Cameron? Part II

The next video concerns the same incident. Here events take on a more dramatic character. Water through the hole penetrates the playground, and this causes a short circuit in the TV. There is a fire. Fortunately, the staff reacted on time, and did not allow the fire to spread. But the extinguishing operation itself was very risky. After all, an employee who fought with fire stood in the water while the TV burned due to a short circuit.

6. Passengers have a good time on board during a severe storm

Seeing a storm in a dream is a warning of some kind of test.

If you dream that you are in a storm, then you are not satisfied with your life, you are overwhelmed with desires and passions that in reality do not find a way out. If you see in a dream that someone was in a storm, then this indicates that this person is in a difficult position and needs help. If in a dream you see that a wave is sweeping over you or you are drowning, then this warns you of the danger to which you are exposed. If in a dream you managed to escape from the storm, then in reality you will be able to avoid great misfortune.

If you dream of a storm from Monday to Tuesday, then you need to be prepared for any surprise. If you see a storm in a dream from Wednesday to Thursday, you should not commit rash acts, otherwise the consequences will be very serious for you. If you saw a storm in a dream from Saturday to Sunday, then this is a sign that your career is in danger and it will take a lot of effort and patience to fix the situation.

By the way, you can recall the story that happened with the industrialist Witson in 1863. During a trip from England to America, the ship fell into a storm that lasted several days. Exhausted by seasickness, Witson fell asleep and saw his wife in a dream. She was in a white dress, and, going to Witson's bunk, bent down to him, kissed and said that soon it would all be over, and they would see each other. Waking up in the morning, Witson saw that the storm had finally stopped. When the industrialist returned home, his wife told him that she saw in a dream how the ship on which Witson was sailing fell into a storm and she really wanted to console him and cheer him up. She described Witson's cabin, which she saw in a dream. This description corresponded exactly to the cabin in which Witson was awake during a storm.
