This was the source of inspiration for Dan Brown, who wrote the highly controversial book, The Da Vinci Code

Centralia (Centralia), Pennsylvania, USA

This mining town in Pennsylvania has gained worldwide fame for being perhaps the most dangerous place to live. In addition to the fact that for decades a fire has raged here, which the firefighter could not cope with, there is an even more serious danger - karst funnels. Residents were asked to leave the city when, in the eighties, a little boy fell into one of these craters in the courtyard of his own house. However, despite all these “charms”, about a dozen old-timers still remain faithful to their small homeland.

Damanhur Federation, Italy

In northern Italy, there is a kind of underground city built as an embodiment of the dream of radical humanists many years ago. They say Damanhur is a collective dream transformed into reality. Currently, the town is thriving, enjoying its well-deserved fame, thanks to the magnificent underground temples, extraordinary ideas and ecologically impeccable houses.

Forty kilometers from Orlando, Florida, a special town has been built where, according to the rules, each house must have at least one permanent resident over 55 years old and must not be anyone younger than nineteen. Living in the town is safe and healthy: there are golf courses, hiking and cycling paths, fitness centers, as well as restaurants and shops. The purpose of such a retirement paradise proclaims the creation of the most peaceful place to relax people at sunset life.

Thames Town, China

In the Chinese province of Songyang, a British-style town was built. In this wittyly named Thames Town, everything is emphasized in English: architecture, cuisine, and even these classic telephone booths that make London so easy to recognize. In a word - a corner of true Britain in the very center of Asia.

Coober Pedy, Australia

This town in a small town in the central part of the Australian state of South Australia is completely located below the surface of the earth, as it was built on the site of abandoned mines. It is known as a very favorable place to live, because in these parts daytime life hides from an overly generous, sometimes merciless sun. In addition, the place is very attractive because of the wonderful opals mined here in considerable quantities.

Supilinne, Estonia

A tiny and very quiet town in Estonia lives, as they say, with its simple life. Take a look at small houses, devoid of any signs of modern architecture, at the streets named after vegetables. Anyone who comes here will immediately understand why this place was given the name, which translates as "soup town".

Battleship, Battleship Island, Japan

Hell City, Michigan, USA

This small town in Michigan is struggling to live up to its name (in a good way, if I may say so). There are numerous restaurants and attractions filled with "horrors" and all kinds of devilry. It’s easy to guess that Halloween is the favorite holiday in this Hell-town.

Gibsontown, Florida, USA

Once just a popular place for entertainment and well-deserved rest for retired circus performers, Gibsontown gradually turned into a place of permanent residence for many people who once worked in the circus industry. The pride of this town has become a few unique exhibits and museums in the carnival and circus styles.

Manshiyat - City of garbage men, Egypt

Looking at this Egyptian town, or rather, even the area on the outskirts of Cairo, you can immediately think about the consequences of a natural disaster. Mountains of garbage are scattered across the streets, but this is considered absolutely normal here. Inhabitants of the surrounding slums earn their living by sorting and recycling garbage that is collected from all over Egypt. I must add that they surprisingly successfully cope with their difficult task.

Gnome Village, China

In this "puppet" Chinese village there are only midgets and dwarfs. It may seem very cute and attractive, a sort of the only shelter where the "little people" are among their own and do not feel like "second grade". However, with a closer look, it is easy to make sure that it is rather a tourist attraction, something like an unusual attraction.

Miyake Jima, Japan

The island town of Miyake-Jima in Japan is unique in that the government pays its residents for not leaving the islands. Since the city is located at the base of an active volcano, the population is constantly experiencing the effect of increased levels of sulfur in the air, and sometimes even is threatened with poisoning! Citizens are forced to constantly wear protective masks due to the high toxicity of the air. Perhaps the Japanese authorities are conducting an experiment, figuring out the impact of extreme living conditions on human health.

In many countries, the name of the city is often not a simple word. Most often, the name of the city means something connected with it - a river or the sea, on the banks of which it is located or some symbol of the city. But sometimes the names of cities are whole phrases bearing mysterious and mysterious meaning. It doesn’t matter how famous the city is and what exactly it has become famous for most - it is not in vain that in many religions a special meaning is put in the name. Having learned the meaning of city names, one can discover something more than what is seen in the streets. An article about cities with the most beautiful and interesting names is an excellent educational material that can diversify the horizons of many experienced travelers. If a person managed to visit these cities, one can compare personal impressions with the meaning of the names, if not, then it is time to check whether the city corresponds to the meaning of its name.

Pattaya - “the wind coming before the rainy season”

Pattaya is one of the largest and most famous cities in Thailand, occupying the top lines in many lists of Thai resorts. Often a visit to Pattaya seems even more interesting and desirable than a visit to Bangkok - the main city of Thailand and the capital of the country. This attractiveness of Pattaya is due to the fact that the Thai authorities have done everything to turn the city into a real paradise for tourists. Travel agencies around the world never have to puzzle over the preparation of Pattaya's tourist program for customers - there is simply a huge amount of entertainment and all kinds of interesting leisure activities. Crocodile farms, elephant pastures, a huge oceanarium with a bunch of different views for tourists, a huge botanical garden with a magnificent park of tropical orchids ...

Noteworthy is the huge number of restaurants and cafes that feature cuisines of all the nations of the world, a replica park of famous attractions. The vaults of the Temple of Doom proudly rise above the heads of people walking along South Street, and the cozy sandy shore of the Gulf of Thailand should soon adorn the image of the majestic Temple of Truth. In Pattaya, the wind that arrives before the rainy season begins is probably the wind of the masses of tourists, a single rush of their breath and the noise of noisy streets, subsiding only during the most intense tropical rains.

Antananarivo - “the city of a thousand warriors”

The capital of hot and sunny Madagascar can be called the main center of life on the island. Antananarivo is located on the hillsides, densely dotted with strings of descending terraces, and on the peaks are palaces with shining gold roofs. Life is boiling in the lower reaches of the hills covered with fog - it seems that the ever-moving stream of tourists does not allow Antananarivo to stand still for a moment. The sight of visitors is delighted by the splendidly preserved buildings of past centuries; the noise of human voices never subsides on noisy streets. A real demonstration of local culture is the unforgettable performance of the best artists of Hira-Gashi - the famous local theater. Antinanarivo is called the city of thousands of warriors, but little reminds of past battles here.

Tegucigalpa - Silver Hills

On the gentle slopes of the valley of the Choltek River, Tegucigalpa is located - the main city of the sultry tropical Honduras, the main economic and cultural center of the country with a difficult history. Life is in full swing on the sunny streets of Tegucigalpa - among all the expanses of Central America, there are only two cities larger than the capital of Honduras. One of the main features of the city is its division into the plain and more mountainous parts. The average height of the capital of Honduras is about 1000 meters above sea level - that is why in a city filled with people it is surprisingly fresh air and a rather mild climate, sometimes interrupted by periods of terrible heat, in which only blows of mountain winds and the remains of the once huge coniferous forests save.

Clermont Ferrand - City of Extinct Volcanoes

Thousands of years ago a huge volcano rose in the south of France, proudly crowning the Wolverhampton mountain range. But since the eruption of the lava giant, hundreds of years have passed and the slopes of the giant have been covered with forests, among which Clermont-Ferrand lurks - a truly special city with a population of almost 140 thousand inhabitants. The ancient architectural heritage of this city is represented by a huge number of residential buildings, church buildings, sustained in the incompleteness of the exquisite style of early Gothic. There is something invisible and special in the appearance of the city - it is thanks to it that all these objects look surprisingly harmonious even today, reviving quite standard urban landscapes. Clermont-Ferrand can be called a student city - there are several large universities, which attract many students from all over the district and hundreds of foreigners to study. Every year, the center of the cultural life of the city becomes the International Short Film Festival, from which many successful French directors have started.

Aguascalientes - Hot Water

The center of the state of the same name in Mexico received its name due to the huge number of hot springs nearby. In general, Aguascalientes embodies all the main Mexican traditions - after the sultry, whipping emotions of the local bullfighting, people go out to calm streets here, as if covered with a foggy provincial veil. In addition, the state capital is a major center of trade and industry. This is due to the fact that a large number of high-tech industries are located in the state, which are actively gaining momentum in the dynamically developing Mexico. But tourists are most attracted to the contract of a truly modern life with the provincial coziness of narrow streets and quiet suburbs, where small farms thrive. Having become truly modern, Aguascalientes managed to preserve the charming simplicity of the past.

Reykjavik - “smoking bay”

The capital of a small and peaceful Iceland has been living a calm and serene life for many years. Hot water of volcanic origin circulates through the city's communications, heating all ordinary buildings and even farm greenhouses. Reykjavik looks like a city that was built not by people, but by nature itself - the image of the urban landscapes of the Icelandic capital is so harmonious, calm and natural. Nature itself warms Reykjavik, and its streets are filled with an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Southampton is a beautiful port on the south coast of Great Britain

On the gentle shores of the Solent Strait, the picturesque buildings of Southampton rise. Only 55 thousand people live here, but from time to time this number can double - the local nature and the unique atmosphere of ancient narrow streets that have absorbed English traditions are so attractive. The center of the city is a long canal through which all ships from the Atlantic Ocean pass into the bay. The city’s ports are equipped with the largest shipbuilding docks, from which many magnificent ships descended, including the legendary Titanic.
