Near Koktebel, at the foot of the mountain massif Karadag

Often called the visiting card of Koktebel. Over hundreds of years of their fame, they have overgrown with a mass of legends and legends, romantic and cooling the blood, mysterious and alluring.

Golden Gate - a rock at the foot of the famous sights of Ukraine mountain-volcanic massif Karadag. Massive gates with bizarre sharp stone ledges soar up from the sea to a height of about 15 meters. The Golden Gate attracts all visitors to the city, everyone who comes to Koktebel must make a boat trip to this amazing place.

For many years this attraction of Koktebel had a completely different name - Shaitan-kapu, which is translated from the Crimean Tatar as Devil's Gate. For several centuries they were considered the entrance to the underworld. The arched form of a rock towering above the expanse of the Black Sea waters, sharp stone peaks dissecting the air - an amazing location and shape amazed, scared, surprised many who saw it. No exception was even A.S. Pushkin, who drew the gate in the margin of the manuscript of "Eugene Onegin."

Pushkin remembered the Golden Gate so brightly that 3 years after what he saw, he depicted them accurately and practically topographically. However, the writer could not help but illustrate his impressions of the mysterious rock: just below the gate, he depicted a demon, around whom little besyaty jump and dance, and a witch flying on a broomstick nearby. Next to the picture, Pushkin wrote:

He who lived and thought cannot
  In the soul do not despise people;
  Who felt disturbed
The ghost of irrevocable days ...

Those who saw the rock were connected with the Golden Gate by tradition and legend. So, even the ancient Greeks believed that it was through them that one could enter the underground kingdom of the dead, which Hades owned, that through these gates such ancient heroes as Odysseus, Hercules and Orpheus passed.

The name `` Golden Gate '' got a fancy rock not so long ago. Because of the yellow lichen, which gives the rock a reddish tint in the light of the sun, they began to be called that way, and the gloomy legends connecting Koktebel, the Golden Gate with the entrance to the underworld or Hell are a thing of the past. It is believed that if you pass through the arch of the Golden Gate on a boat, then the desire that was made at that moment will be fulfilled.

The fantasy of nature is limitless, and such sights of the Crimea as the Golden Gate are a vivid confirmation of this, which everyone who saw this amazing rock with their own eyes is convinced of. For all guests of the city of Koktebel, the Golden Gate is an opportunity to see a unique natural monument, gain the most vivid impressions and even touch the legends of Ancient Greece.

The healing air, favorable climate, stunning nature, historical, cultural monuments and entertainment - all this is the blessed Crimean peninsula. Guests know that they are waiting for vivid impressions, photos for memory and delicious memories. The small resort town of Koktebel is also popular. The Golden Gate and the volcanic massif Karadag, Klementyev Mountain and the cozy Koktebel Bay are just a small list of the beauties donated by Mother Nature to this region. The first and this article is dedicated.

Where is in the Crimea?

The main features are that it stands in the sea, near the coast, has the shape of an arch. The rock is considered the main natural attraction of the resort region, its visiting card. Local artisans actively reproduce in their own souvenir products, because it is well known to guests of the city.

Golden Gate Rock: indescribable beauty

To the guest's question what Koktebel prepared, the Golden Gate is the first and main answer of the residents of the village and its environs. Seeing a cliff majestically rising above the sea, anyone understands that he will not find greater beauty here. As a result, you need to relax, take a horizontal position, close your eyes and imagine a natural work of art.

Once there was a formidable volcano in these places, but time and sea are ruthless to such formidable creatures. Today, only a rock remains from it, standing out from a company of similar natural formations by the presence of a large arch. This fact gave her a beautiful name.

The formation rises above the sea by 8 m, the massif is about 6 m wide, the sea in these places reaches 15 meters deep and has a gentle turquoise hue. The name is associated not only with the arch, the definition of "gold" is correlated with color. The rock consists of yellow basalt; around noon in bright sunlight it shines and shimmers.

According to reviews, sometimes you can see how the sun rises through the opening. Unfortunately, this happens only within a few days and then during the winter solstice, when there are few visitors on the Crimean peninsula. The Golden Gate of Koktebel, however, is popular at this time of year.

Myths and legends about sightseeing

There are many interesting stories and legends associated with this place, most of them
can be heard on the review or thematic. The main thing is that everyone should throw a coin, but not immediately at sea, but so that it hits a rock and rings. The “trick” was successful - now you need to wait for good luck. The fact that people believe in these stories says a lot of coins sparkling on the seabed.

There are also opposite legends, assuring that the place is connected with otherworldly forces. Moreover, the roots of beliefs go back to ancient times, are associated with the heroes and gods of ancient Greek mythology. Residents of a beautiful country, once located here, believed that by passing through an arch in this rock, a person could find himself in the world of the dead, as Odysseus, Hercules and Orpheus did.

The Crimean Tatars who lived in antiquity on these lands “agreed” with them. Belief in the unusual characteristics of the rock is reflected in the Tatar name - “Sheitan Kapu”, which can be translated as “Devil's Gate”. According to their myths, it is here that the entrance to the underworld is hidden.

Golden Gate and Illustrious Genius

Fans of Alexander Pushkin are aware of the writer’s meeting with an unusual natural education. Event
happened in 1820 when he traveled along the coast of Crimea from to Gurzuf. The poet did not leave any memoirs, records or poems dedicated to this. But three years after traveling in a draft notebook of the outline of “Eugene Onegin”, a drawing of a lonely rock standing in the sea appears. The author of the sketch and other images in the margins of this notebook was A. Pushkin.

Around the image, he painted demons and a gloomy demon, as if he knew about the second name - “Devil's Gate”. For a long time, researchers of creativity could not determine whether the depicted landscape is a fiction of Alexander Sergeyevich or a real geographical object. The question has been removed, but the mystery remains, what attracts the area, which after years remains in memory and in the photo. The Golden Gate of Koktebel is truly mysterious!

How to get to the sights from the village of Koktebel?

A traveler who does not know how to get to the Golden Gate of Koktebel, but dreams of seeing this miracle, can choose one of two routes, the length is approximately the same, only one is much shorter:

  1. A boat trip will last about 2.5 hours, it starts from the pier. During the trip, you can enjoy the scenery of nature and the sea. A mandatory item of the program is visiting the cliff, some brave captains even conduct ships under the arch, causing cries of delight among passengers.
  2. The second method is land, for this you need to go with a guide to Karadag. During the trip - a meeting with the sights and landscapes, the opportunity to look at the rock from above. However, it will be necessary to overcome about 8-9 km in a southerly direction, towards the village of Kurortnoye.

By car, driving to the object, of course, will not work, but the closest you can get there.

Writes by aquatek-filips: Today's story is about one of the three visual symbols of Crimea - the Golden Gate rock. Along with the Swallow's Nest and Bear Mountain, this rock is most often seen in various souvenir photographs, postcards, magnets in the Crimea, as well as in articles and on the covers of magazines telling about the Crimea.

One of the favorite places for tourists is a natural object created by an ancient volcano, and then “modified” by sea waves and wind. In ancient times, the rock was called in a completely different way - Devil's Gate (or Sheytan-kapu), and it was believed that here is the entrance to the Underworld.

Why are the gates golden? Firstly, at dawn they really look golden. Although not everyone can see the dawn from the right point, because the rock is located on the territory of the reserve and access to the wild beach at the foot of the Lion’s Day is forbidden and is protected by rangers of the reserve.
But the rock becomes “golden” and again during the day - at about 13-14 hours. At this time, in the summer, the sun is in such a position that the incident rays change the color of the rock to close to gold. She is beautiful at sunset.

What is this happening for? The fact is that the rock is completely covered with yellow lichens, which play in the sunlight.

True, recently its upper part has become more white than yellow. This is due to an increase in the number of red-crested cormorant, which nests in these places. And his litter increasingly covers the surrounding rocks.
Despite the seemingly not very large sizes, the rock is quite massive. Its height is 8 meters and its width is 6. Just two years ago, almost all pleasure boats carrying tourists from Koktebel, Kurortny or Feodosia passed in the opening, and tourists threw coins for good luck.
However, since the beginning of the holiday season of 2012, a ban was imposed on the passage of boats under the Golden Gate, and the entire tourist route along the marine part of the reserve was changed, which now runs at least 100 meters from the coastline.
This measure, in my opinion, is quite justified, given the eco-culture of our tourists.

The most famous rock of Crimea is located in the east of the peninsula, at the foot of the ancient extinct volcano Karadag.
Volcanic activity many millions of years ago created many incredible formations in this place. One of these entities is the Golden Gate.

It was already after the storm and wind expanded the natural opening to a huge size, through which even a small pleasure boat can sail. But first there was a volcano. It is enough to take a closer look at the structure of the rock.

The Golden Gate, Lion’s Day and the Devil's Fire gorge are traces of the activity of an ancient volcano.

Minutes when the rock has a golden color.

Dawn at the Golden Gate. Of course, the most famous shots are when you manage to shoot the sun directly in the rock opening, but this is only possible a few days a year ...

Which once upon a time was an active volcano, there is a rock in the form of an arch. It is called the Golden Gate.

The most beautiful landmark of natural origin is the most recognizable rock of Kara-Dag, its "visiting card", attracting many tourists. The Golden Gate is located in the urban district of Feodosia, between the villages of Koktebel and Kurortnoye.

The height of the Golden Gate rock in Crimea reaches just over 8 meters above water, the total height from the bottom is more than 15 meters.

From below, the tufa ridge is separated by long benches of small width, due to which there is a resemblance to the amphitheater, as if nature had deliberately arranged so that an amazingly beautiful landscape with the Golden Gate of Kara-Dag can be seen from this place. The size of the Golden Gate seems rather modest from above, but this appearance is misleading - not only fishermen’s boats sailing under the arch can pass, but also small motor ships on which vacationers like to go for boat trips.

Prices for excursions to the Golden Gate rock

The arch can be accessed as part of excursion routes organized by the Kara-Dag Nature Reserve. Visiting the protected area is allowed only accompanied by the staff of the institution. Groups are formed by appointment by phone: + 7-36562-26287, + 7-978-75-61-454 or by e-mail: [email protected]. In summer, a regular schedule of excursions is approved. Tickets must be purchased immediately before departure on the route.

A visit to the Golden Gate rock is included in hiking and sea routes. The first option is the ecological trail No. 1 “Big Karadag”. Cost: for adults - 600 rubles, for children (7-14 years) - 400 rubles, participation for children under 7 years old is free. You can go on it at any time of the year, the path is mountain pedestrian, closes only in rainy weather. The minimum number of participants is 6 people. The route runs from Kurortnoye to Koktebel, you can go through the ring route, the path goes along the slope of the Coastal Range, through the South Pass. Participants of the excursion trip will visit several viewing platforms and see other interesting cliffs and gorges, in addition to the "Golden Gate" of Karadag near Koktebel. The transition requires certain physical efforts, it is not recommended for people with diseases of the cardiovascular system. The organizers are asking to prepare and provide with themselves 1 liter of water, comfortable sports shoes, a hat. The route is 7 kilometers long and takes 4 hours.

Sea excursions to the Golden Gate in Crimea

The second option is to look at the Golden Gate rock in Crimea - from the water. The reserve organizes boat trips along the ecological trail No. 3 “Along the extinct Karadag volcano”. The price of a boat trip to the Golden Gate is the same for adults and children - 500 rubles. The route operates seasonally, usually from May to October, it is necessary to clarify the mode of operation on the reserve’s official website. The length is 8 kilometers, the duration is 1 hour. The excursion goes along the coast of Karadag from the pier of the reserve. Participants of the walk will see many picturesque bays and various volcanic formations, grottoes and stones. According to tourists, near the Golden Gate of Karadag in the Crimea you can find dolphins. The depth here is about 50 meters, the water is very clear.

You can also get a sea excursion at various travel agencies: it will be a trip on a small boat or a big boat, usually it takes about 20 minutes to swim near the Golden Gate rock from the Karadag massif in Crimea. The cost of such boat trips will be slightly higher than that of the reserve. The most popular departure point is Koktebel, boats also come from Feodosia and the village of Kurortnoye.

History

The Golden Gate rock near Koktebel broke away from the Karadag massif several million years ago. That is, it also has a volcanic origin. Over time, its shape was formed by sea waves and wind.

Now the rock has a beautiful name due to the fact that its golden color is clearly visible in sunny weather. It is best to observe this from 12:00 to 15:00 hours. This is due to the play of light on yellow lichens covering the arched rock.

However, at a time when the ancient Greeks lived in Crimea, the rock was called the "Devil's Gate". It was believed that it was here that the heroes of myths descended into the underworld of the dead. Among the locals there are many stories about the abnormality of this place: how the clock stops under the gate, navigation does not work, interference and voices are heard on the air. They also say that unidentified objects fly near the rock, and a monster lives under it. Therefore, even now, the Golden Gate rock is called by some “Devil's Gate”.

The “Golden Gate” of Crimea is depicted in a drawing made by A. S. Pushkin in the margins of the manuscript “Eugene Onegin” after a trip along the Crimean coast.
