Many residents of St. Petersburg, which is dominated by a humid climate, consider the resorts located on the Black Sea coast an ideal vacation spot. Adler is very popular among vacationers from the city on the Neva due to the clean sea, beautiful landscapes and developed tourist infrastructure. You can get to it in the shortest possible time, staying in an atmosphere full of comfort, by train, which has its own name "Northern Palmyra". In this article we will tell you about the features of traveling on this comfortable vehicle.

    origin of name

The train "Severnaya Palmira", whose route is the longest among the branded trains of the October Railway, received its name, distinguished by its sonority, from the poetic "name" of St. Petersburg. The city, founded by Peter I, began to be called so in honor of the ancient center of trade, located on the Syrian territory.

All began to be called Northern in the 19th century, at the height of the era of classicism. The city, striking in its beauty, has also been compared to the Venice of the North. Tourists from Europe who visited it admired the splendor of the beautiful facades, the large number of columns, the majestic architectural structures of the city on the Neva. It is similar to the famous ancient city called Palmyra for its graceful and rich architecture.

The history of the appearance of the train

The train "Severnaya Palmira" (035a), which has two floors, has been running between St. Petersburg and Adler since 2013. It consists of a dining car, luxury compartment and sleeping carriages.

Until this year, this train, which appeared in the late nineties, had a one-story train. Over time, he lost the necessary level of service and maintenance, lost the right to be called a corporate one, and the decision of the railway management was reduced.

    G. Komarov, who took over at the helm of the Oktyabrskaya railway, decided to revive the "Northern Palmyra", and in the summer of 2002 the renewed single-deck train began to run along its route again.

The route of the branded train

Usually delivers passengers to their destination in 38 hours. It stops less on the way than other trains, bypassing large cities with small stops. stops in the town of Bologoye, located in the Tver region, then stands a minute in Tver itself.

Further the train "Northern Palmira" follows without stops 372 kilometers to Ryazan. He also stops at and before arriving at his destination in Goryachy Klyuch, Tuapse, Lazarevsky, Loo, Sochi and Khost. The train goes for an hour and a half along the Black Sea, beaches, boat docks, sanatoriums sweep by. Passengers are given the opportunity to admire the incredibly beautiful landscapes. Then "Northern Palmyra" turns into the mountains and "climbs" higher and higher.

The appearance of this vehicle is modern and stylish. This can be called its hallmark. The train speed can reach 250 kilometers per hour.

Advantages of traveling on "Northern Palmyra"

The train "Severnaya Palmira" (passenger reviews testify to this) has advantageous differences from other trains. Its comfortable carriages are equipped with:

    • dry closets, functioning during stops;
    • air conditioning and heating systems;
    • compartment for passengers with disabilities;
    • ladders with handrails;
    • video surveillance system;
    • electronic boards with information for passengers.

The train tickets include breakfast and good quality bedding. Passengers of the "Northern Palmyra" train receive a certain set of products from the conductors to have a snack on the way. They can also order food from the dining car without leaving the compartment.

On the train you can use the Internet, there are special compartments for children, where they can spend their leisure time. To connect to the network, you just need to ask the conductor for the access code and enter it.

Cons of traveling on this train

A trip on the Severnaya Palmira double-decker train (passenger reviews confirm this fact) still includes some inconveniences.

This train has less space for carry-on luggage, there is no overhead luggage rack, and all luggage has to be placed at the bottom.

On the upper shelves of the second floor, due to the slope of the roof, people of large build may experience discomfort.

It can be inconvenient to climb the stairs to the upper floor with luggage.

In some cases, passengers are not satisfied with the quality of food and the appearance of bed linen, the operation of the air conditioner.

The train schedule "Northern Palmira" directly depends on the time of the year. In autumn and winter, the number of trains is reduced. At the end of spring and summer months, trains run much more, since the number of St. Petersburg residents who want to relax in warm regions increases significantly.

About a month ago, I spoke in detail about the state of affairs at the construction site of the bypass of Ukraine. However, the train itself, on which I made this voyage, remained behind the scenes. It was train # 36 "Severnaya Palmira" with the Adler - St. Petersburg route; but not ordinary, but two-story. At that time, he made only the second regular flight in his passenger career (the first time he went on the route on May 31) and that's when I tested him.

In principle, I have already tested long-distance "two-story buildings" before: in 2014 - (upper floor) and in 2015 - (lower floor), so this time I deliberately chose the lower floor, as it is noticeably more comfortable. From the new one - I first encountered the train's Internet portal. This is a new feature of the FPK, which is now being tested for mass implementation. Therefore, in this review, it will be about her in more detail than about the rest. As for the consideration of the pros and cons of driving on both floors of the carriage, then I refer to the above-mentioned previous reviews, everything was set out there.

    2. We leave Sochi at 17:17, in the late afternoon. The train schedule is quite comfortable: evening, two nights, the next day and in the morning arrival in St. Petersburg, running 38 hours. He leaves Adler half an hour earlier. In principle, the train goes to Sochi almost empty, and here and then in Tuapse it is filled by about 40-45% (let me remind you that this happens on June 3 - the very beginning of the season, and everyone goes vice versa to the resort, and not from it). I was in the compartment in the singular (there were 2 and 3 people, respectively).

    Arrival of the train (video)

    3. The cars are completely new, it is immediately clear that another batch has been released for the new route. Immediately, I note that here (as in other two-story trains that I have used) no one gives passengers a magnetic key card, although in general it is supposed to. Why this is so is unclear. The first floor is noticeably higher and more comfortable in terms of the dimensions of the second and, in general, comes close to the quality of the trip to the "ordinary" coupe. I considered all this in the corresponding review, I will not repeat myself.

    4. Train schedule.

    5. The first hour and a half the train goes along the Black Sea. Handsomely. Beaches, boat docks, sanatorium villages. Sochi remains far to the south.

    6. Station Loo.

    7. On Lazarevskaya (this is still a part of Greater Sochi) - the first large parking lot, 11 minutes. I go out, walk - humid and hot. South.

    8. Signpost in the style of Russian Railways.

    9. Closer to the sea - nakhalstroy and all sorts of rented rooms for holidaymakers. It's so massive here.

    10. I didn't go to the station, and apparently in vain. Anyway.

Then they came from the dining car.
    - You are entitled to food on the ticket, when will you take it?
    - When is it possible?
    - Tonight or tomorrow evening?
    - Is it possible only once?
    - Yes, there is only one admission on the ticket.
    - Then tomorrow.
    - Chicken, fish, pork?
    - Let's get the chicken.
    (went further)

    11. Again the sea. In the distance - a ship's roadstead, we are approaching the port of Tuapse.

    12. Goodbye, Black Sea. Now the train will turn sharply inland and begin to climb the mountains. Literally in a minute.

    13. And oops, a surprise at once - resort-imposing views are replaced by harsh industrial landscapes. Oil tanks, and then the plant. Tuapse, it is :)

    14. I will make a separate post about Tuapse station, but here is only one picture. We stood here for 18 minutes, missing the oncoming "Swallow" and another train. The station has also been turned into a fenced-in fortress, like all large stations in the North Caucasus region. So, without inspection, you cannot return to the territory if you go out.

    15. Behind the station - an oil refinery (?) Plant. It was already getting dark.

    16. As the train climbed higher, it was getting dark, and I was about to finish reading the biography of Archpriest Avvakum, took the reader out of my backpack. But then my eyes accidentally fell on the volume control above the window, where "Wi-Fi connect" was clearly written. So, is there a wi-fi here, is it ??? Need to check. He pulled out a tablet and started burning it. And for sure - there is! And not just a network, but a train portal. I hadn’t come across such a thing before, and I remembered what they really said about such plans.

I went to the conductor for tea and at the same time asked her about the Internet.
    - Is it paid for you?
    - Yes, for a fee.
    - How much?
    - I don’t know yet, everything is only being tested.
    - Um ... ( okay, I'll try as it is)

    18. The "Route" service turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Slowly, but the terrain where we were driving was drawn. The train speed and coordinates, as well as the signal strength, were written in small letters. The cursor moved slowly. The terrain could be zoomed in and out, but every minute the entire map was automatically centered with the cursor in the middle. Nevertheless, I breathed a sigh of relief - the fact is that in Sochi Megafon blocked me (I wrote about this) and I was without a normal Internet connection. So, if the portal works, tomorrow I will definitely calculate the Ukrainian territory, and the end points of the bypass under construction.

    19. Tab of the menu "About the train". It immediately shows the current speed (regardless of the GPS in the device).

    20. Films divided by genres and subgenres. Uploaded to the train portal, not online. Fast access. I scoured the menu and counted about 500-600 films.

    21. There will be a charge for every movie en route. Clicked on the names, asks for the film on average 80-140 rubles. Multiple view access is valid for 1 day. It is not yet clear how the payment will be made, the system is only being tested.

    22. In the southern night we arrived at Goryachy Klyuch, where the locomotive was changing. Parking 33 minutes.

    23. Walked to the station and went back to the carriage.

    24. During the night, no one in the compartment got hooked, neither in Krasnodar, nor in Rostov - so he was driving alone. In the morning I woke up from the bright sun. Until 10 in the morning we drove briskly and zealously, but then we got up somewhere at a small station. We stand for 5 minutes, 10, 15 ... she's not on the schedule.

    I went to the conductor.
    - What? And the air conditioner didn't work. The power in the sockets is gone, there is no charging!
    - The locomotive has broken down. We are waiting for a replacement ...
About 30 minutes later, indeed, a shunting maneuver came and dragged us to Millerovo - it was very close. An electric locomotive was hooked up there, everything was restored. Charging started again and a pleasant chill in the carriage.

    26. Millerovo. The Ukrainian belt is coming soon, you have to be on your guard. I look on my tablet for the approach of the desired station. Still very convenient, the "Route" tab! She helped me out specifically, when Megaphone was cut off.

    27. Took tea. Here they give not nasty paper bags, but mesh pyramids. Well done. They are much nicer, more aromatic and leafy tea leaves, not garbage-like. It seems like a trifle - but it's not a trifle at all!

(the passage of the Ukrainian belt was covered in detail in a separate post, so I skip it)

    28. In Rossosh, in a shortened parking lot, I managed to grab a travel kit from my aunt's - there’s something to eat, but it’s far from the evening.

29.200 p. - tomato, warm potatoes, 2 cutlets. Was covered with a film. I had lunch, in general.

    30. Moving Don.

    31. Liski are approaching.

    32. The sign of the entire line is the huge elevators at the stations. Mostly working, and in some places abandoned.

    33. Closer to Voronezh it started to rain.

    34. I follow the route on the train portal. No, it's really convenient. Still, they would not center the position every minute - it would be great!

    35. "Palmira" has a call at Voronezh, unlike many other trains. That is, it leaves to the left of the main straight line (see the photo), enters the city at the main station, then changes the direction of movement and exits back through the connection. It is strange why a normal railway station has not yet been built there on the main line! This decision just suggests itself. There are bridges, there are roads. There is no station with infrastructure.

    36. We go to Voronezh along the lateral process. The speed is small, 40 kilometers.

    37. Station Voronezh-1. This is my first time here, and therefore, despite the pouring rain, I go out to the platform to look.

    38. The station is also a fortress, fenced from all sides.

    39. Therefore, the steam locomotive is a monument outside the perimeter, you cannot approach it.

    41. The train changes direction, and EP1M is caught on the other side. Now let's go back :)

Here, at last, the second passenger sat down in the compartment - a man who is probably over 80 years old. He walks slowly, not good enough. But cheerful. He was put on the train by a healthy man, son or nephew. We started talking gradually - he turned out to be a military sailor, a retired capraz. He served for a long time on Novaya Zemlya, provided a test site for nuclear weapons. He loves to talk about politics, and as it turned out a little later, also conspiracy theories - so I immediately gave him freedom of expression, without particularly interfering with my opinions :)

    42. In Voronezh, the train was 70% full somewhere, then the Gryazi passed and then a lot of people got hooked (this is the outpost of the regional Lipetsk). Finally, it was time for dinner. I went into the train system and looked at the prices. On the ticket, I was entitled to a hot dinner.

    43. Well. Around 6 pm, an aunt comes from the dining car and brings me just such an eggplant with rice and some chicken upstairs. Loaf as bread.

And it's all? - I involuntarily escaped? - Is this a "hot dinner"?
    - Yes! - Seeing my bewilderment, - We have everything according to the standard!
    She left.
(Hmm ... That's what "ticket meals" eventually degenerated into, I thought. - Aren't these "tenants" insolent?)

43a. For comparison, this is how a real hot dinner looked like on a ticket 5 years ago (train "Baikal" No. 9, 2011). Soup on the right, potatoes with schnitzel on the left.

    44. In the evening we passed Ryazan-2, this is the final major stop to St. Petersburg. Here, too, people sat in the carriage.

    45. A Novorossiysk train approached nearby under EP20. And we unhooked EP1M ...

    46. ... and attached EP2K. He will already lead us to Peter.

    47. Late in the evening they began to approach Moscow, where a technical stop was planned at midnight without boarding passengers.

    48. Very interesting: the train made its way through the very center of Moscow in the silence of the night, the carriage slept sweetly, and you could contemplate different metropolitan views :) However, there was little light, I did not take pictures - I just watched the traffic on the train portal. Then the train stopped at the station. Nikolaevka for 10 minutes. The station was also familiar to me, I was there on the inspection of a sedentary 2-storey building.

    49. After that, all night long they walked rather quickly along the main course of the October highway and at 7-46 arrived in Northern Palmyra.

That's it, the trip is over.

    Summary.
    1. On the first floor of a 2-storey building it is quite normal to travel for a day and a half.
    2. The train's Internet portal is a competent undertaking (plans). If you finish it intelligently, you get a very demanded service.
    3. The route schedule is convenient.
    4. The tenants (restaurant car) became insolent and made a mocking puff out of the catering service on the ticket.
    5. The lag due to a breakdown of an electric locomotive in front of Millerovo was caught up in about 7 hours.
    6. Magnetic lock cards are never issued to passengers. Why is a mystery ...
