Once upon a time sightseeing tour in Italy we had a free day in Naples. Many tourists from our group went to the city beach, someone decided to explore the city on their own. We decided to swim in Sorrento, which is so often praised by the ministers of art: not one song has been sung about this most beautiful corner of Italy, and more than one artist has tried to convey on his canvases the extraordinary picturesqueness of the rocky coast of Sorreno.
The south of Italy is famous not only for its poverty, but for the amazingly beautiful places of Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento - have always attracted the most famous people in the world. So we rushed to the closest paradise to Naples.
You can get to Sorrento from Naples in different ways:
1) We chose the train from Naples Central Station (it is located next to the port). Fortunately for us, at the station we came across a compatriot who temporarily lives in Italy, he helped us buy tickets and showed us from which platform the trains were leaving. The journey took about 45 minutes.
2) SITA buses also leave from the same Central Station to Sorrento.
3) Sorrento can also be reached by boat from Naples, Ischia and Capri.
Sorrento charmed us as soon as we got off the train. This small townlocated on steep cliffs has its own very cozy and soulful atmosphere. According to legend, the city got its name from the sirens living on the cliffs.
Heading to the sea we passed by central square cities - Tasso square. There are monuments to Saint Anthony, who is the patron saint of the city, and the 16th century poet Torquato Tasso. This square is a conventional center of the city, full of cafes and various souvenir shops.
Then we began to descend to the sea along the road passing along the fault in the rock. This street is called Via de Maio. On the right we saw the famous hotel Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, perched on a high cliff among orange trees. Over 180 years of its history, this hotel has hosted Sophia Loren, Merlin Monroe, Wagner, Luciano Povarotti and many other celebrities. Numerous films and commercials have been filmed in the luxurious aristocratic interiors of this hotel. Rest in Excelsior Vittoria is not available to everyone, because room rates start from 400 euros per night.

In the evening we gathered for the return journey. We climbed up a winding staircase and found ourselves in the city garden near the Church of St. Francis, immersed in greenery. One of the best viewing platforms, which offers the most picturesque views of the Gulf of Naples.
In the garden there is a monument to St. Francis of Assisi with a bird. The church adjoins a very cozy courtyard with arches, which is often used for wedding ceremonies.

We found a very cozy restaurant overlooking the cliff near Mayo Gorge Street and decided to have dinner there. Helpful waiters, excellent cuisine and a glass of Italian wine made the evening unforgettable. It turned out that the restaurant is over a hundred years old. We were even given postcards with a view of the early 20th century gorge.
Every person in our small company was fascinated by this paradise south of Naples. People here are unhurried and benevolent, everyone has a smile on their faces, you can feel some kind of relaxation and peace. Someday I would certainly like to return to the south of Italy in Sorrento and spend more time there.
