In the 19th century, due to friction between the English rulers and the nuns, they caused the temple to be shut down, and all the magnificent frescoes were covered with a layer of plaster. Then the monastery was badly damaged during the 1953 earthquake, but was rebuilt. Surprisingly, during the earthquake, the stucco on the walls of the monastery crumbled, and unique 13th-century murals appeared to the world. Local residents consider this fact a divine phenomenon. The Byzantine Museum was located in the old catholicon (the only surviving part in 1953).

Kipoureon Monastery

The monastery was built in the XVII century near Lixuria, in the western part of the island. Archaeological Museum

Transport features of Kefalonia

The main coastal cities and towns of Kefalonia are connected by bus. It is irregular, as a result of which tourists travel by bus less often. The best option is to rent a car, motorcycle or bicycle. Most Rent-a-Car bureaus are located in Lassi and Argostoli. Taxi prices are low and there is always the opportunity to ask the driver to pick you up at the appointed time from any point on the island.

From Argostoli bus station (located on the southern embankment), up to 11 buses depart daily to Lassi (fare € 1), 4 buses per day to Sami (fare € 2.50), two buses to Poros (fare € 4.50) , and two buses to Skala (€ 4.50) and to Fiskardo (fare € 5). The east coast of Kefalonia is also connected by bus, but more rare. They run between Katelios and Poros, Sami, Skala, Agia Efimia and the village of Fiskardo. Buses do not work on Sunday.

Between Argostoli and Lixouri ferries run almost every hour (in season), they take on board cars (work from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.). The journey takes about 30 minutes, it costs 1.6 / 4/1 Euros per person / car / motorcycle. In Agia Euphemia, you can rent a boat, visit secluded beaches on it. In the summer, 2 buses leave from Skala in the morning to the capital, Argostoli; In winter, the bus runs only once a day. That is why this time our choice fell on the Greek island of Kefalonia (Kefalonia / Cephalonia), not particularly known in wide tourist circles.

It is the largest of the Ionian islands in southwestern Greece and, as the rumor goes, the greenest. We went to explore Kefalonia in the second half of September 2017.

Transport logistics

The island of Kefalonia can be reached in two ways - by air and by sea. There is an airport on the island, but there are no direct flights from Ukraine. Alternatively, you can fly to Kefalonia with a dock in Athens. But the most interesting option for the price schedule of flights for the dates we requested was offered by UIA, whose services we used. The logistics turned out to be the following: a direct flight from Kiev-Athens, at the Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos, we had a car reserved in advance. Then we drove in transit along the upper end of the Peloponnese peninsula on the way to the port of Killini (Kilini / Kyllini), from where ferry flights to the Ionian islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia start.

Apartments for 10 nights in Kefalonia were also booked in advance in the village of Mousáta, 15 km from the island's capital, Argostoli. In many Russian-language reports that I met before the trip, tourists mainly admired the northern tip of the island or the western coast of Kefalonia. I liked the coastline in the southwest and southeast of the island more, although at that time I could only judge by the photos on google maps. Therefore, housing was chosen closer to the desired beaches. For 10 days spent on the island, we managed to drive and see quite a lot. I will not talk about those places that are copied abundantly on the network. I will dwell only on what really impressed us.

One of the closest to our "base" in Musat and, indeed, one of the best beaches in Kefalonia is Koroni Beach. It is located in the southwest of the island at the foot of a high mountain. This is a long non-equipped beach, that is, you need to understand that it is relatively wild, where you need to take a towel and a parasol with you. As a bonus - a minimum of people on the beach. We came here several times at different times of the day, and invariably there were very few people. In my humble opinion, Koroni beach is ideal for a romantic getaway and search for inspiration: fine golden sand, smooth entry into the water, emerald waters of the Ionian Sea and a stunning panorama before your eyes.

A little higher on the mountain slope above the Koroni beach, we discovered another amazing place, Sesto Koroni Hill Bar - a wine bar with panoramic views. Amazing place, atmospheric. It would seem that everything is so simply done, sometimes from the simplest materials at hand, but the essence is in the sincere atmosphere and cordiality of the owners of the institution (a British couple). Sesto Koroni is equally nice to be in the afternoon and evening, especially at sunset. The opening panorama is fascinating! There is nothing superfluous, only the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea and the neighboring island of Zakynthos, spreading in a light haze.

Nearby you can also check out a tasting at the Melissinos Winery winery (one of the best wineries on the island), and we move further along the coast to the south of Kefalonia.

The next stop is Cape Mounda - the southernmost cape of the island. Unusual landscape of the coast: the sandy beach smoothly turns into a powerful stone slab that goes far into the sea, and closer to the tip of the cape over the coast cliffs with bizarre forms of weathering and hidden grottoes hang. From a high hill above Cape Mounda you can go down to a long, seemingly endless, uninhabited beach. Beautiful scenery ... and space, space! And the same stunning wind, which happens only at the extreme points of the earth.

We get into the car again and drive further, moving to the southeast of the island. First we drive through the busy Skala village, and just a few kilometers away we park a car near the next object of our interest, a bay with the poetic name Kato Lagadi. There are no landmarks or signs along the route, just a small heel along the road where those who are in the car leave ... That's right: the bulk of tourists are brought to the bay by yachts and boats by sea, so there are no signs along the road. But there is still a land passage to the bay. The trail and descent to the sea are moderately extreme, but if you have at least minimal physical training and have hiking experience, there will be no problems.

Kato Lagadi Bay is an amazing landscape of the coast, a series of grottoes and tiny bays with small pebbles and a smooth entry into the water. Great place for snorkeling! It is better to come in the morning, when the sun's rays brightly illuminate everything around and grotto-caves can be seen in all its glory. After lunch, the sun goes over Mount Enos and the grottoes hide in the shade. However, photographs are more eloquent than words:

Our next point of interest is the famous Antisamos beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece according to TripAdvisor. A small remark: we do not like public beaches by default. According to our version, the ideal beach is when there is a minimum or no people on it, and there is also a minimum of tourist infrastructure. Being alone with nature is our main desire on vacation. In the case of the beach, Antisamos is the rare exception when we have changed our principles. The beach is really amazingly beautiful. First of all, the view! The view of the bay deepened and extended like a fjord, and the neighboring island of Ithaca opens up indescribable. The legends and myths of ancient Greece, the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" of Homer come to life before your eyes ... and it is really breathtaking that you just see it with your own eyes! By the way, as local Greeks say, in the strait between Kefalonia and Ithaca, under the water is an ancient city from the time of Odyssey. It remains only to take their word for it. On the whole, quite a few reminders of Mycenaean culture (the period in the history of Greece from the 16th to the 11th century BC) and later periods, in particular the Acropolis of Ancient Same open-air museum (located high on the hill above Antisamos beach, admission is free).

Antisamos beach is also unique in that it is usually calm. This is due to the fact that the bay, where the beach is located, “covers” the mainland and the island of Ithaca from the sea, and from the land it is reliably protected by the amphitheater of high mountains. Indeed, it was tested empirically, even when a serious storm broke out one day, the sea was calm and comfortable for swimming in Antisamos Bay. In fairness, it should be noted that for all the aesthetic beauty, the beach has its drawbacks: under the feet there are rather large pebbles, and the depth begins literally from the coast, so this beach is not very suitable for families with small children. But if you are an esthete and your rich inner world is in dire need of new doses of earthly beauty, then Antisamos beach is at your service.

However, you won’t be full of natural beauties, so we are going in search of Greek goodies. Each country has its own specialty or specialty product. This is part of the gastronomic history and culture of a country where they respect the culinary traditions. In Greece, one of the most famous specialties is, of course, Greek yogurt. It’s hard to do without him in Hellas.

Our guesthouse neighbors, Italians, warmly recommended one place in Kefalonia, where you must have breakfast in the Greek style. What can I tell you, Italians know a lot about gourmet food! This is a real oasis ... a very small open area, but ordering and submitting an order, easy communication with a young and cheerful hostess of the establishment is just that rare case when the memory of something for a long time flashes into memory and mentally relishes itself with light nostalgia over time.

Breakfast in the tiny and inconspicuous Myrtillo deserves a separate story. This is not only a positive charge and a full stomach, but also a real taste pleasure. We only stopped by for breakfast at Myrtillo on the way to Myrtos beach (Myrtillo cafe-shop is located on the main highway of the west coast, between two viewing platforms on Myrtos Beach), but I really remembered this place. Here you can buy local homemade and other only nature Greek specialties (honey, jam, jam, nuts) as souvenirs, and there is also a small open area with tables where you can eat.

The correct Greek breakfast, like all ingenious, is extremely simple. Greek yogurt, honey, tahini (sesame paste), nuts. You can also add seasonal fruits or homemade jam. It is not for nothing that, according to statistics, it is on the Greek islands that there are the most long-livers, because with delicious natural food you can afford to live healthy and healthy for many years.

If you come to Myrtillo perfectly for breakfast, then for dinner it is advisable to climb higher into the mountains. For example, you can taste excellent young lamb near the resort town of Sami. Our goal is the mountain village of Poulata. The owner of the house in which we rented the apartments told us about this place. In fact, this is an ordinary village in the mountains, which is remarkable only because it is excellently prepared for the local specialty - meat of young lamb. You can also try lamb dishes, goats and other meat mix grills. But it is the rack of lamb on the coals - a masterpiece of local Greek cuisine.

In the village of Poulata there is a promoted tourist establishment “Rambolis Grill Lamb Reataurant”, where tourists are brought in by buses after an excursion to the cave of Melissani (this is the “visiting card” of Kefalonia, which is located in the vicinity of Sami). And very close to this restaurant there is a small family tavern, the name of which in Greek can not be reproduced (see photo). You need to arrive in the evening, by 8 o’clock it’s ideal. Because at 7 o’clock in the evening the workers are just getting ready to receive guests, and at 9 there may already be no empty seats. Work late until there are visitors. Very tasty, the portions are impressive, the prices are affordable, and the attitude towards the guests is good-natured. The owners of the place host family-friendly guests, and the food and service are beyond praise!

By the way, the basic principle of choosing catering places in Greece (however, this applies to many countries in Europe). Many domestic tourists can meet stereotypical thinking about how a catering institution (restaurant, cafe, pastry shop or coffee house) should look like. Usually how? That's right: a cafe-restaurant will be cool and tasty if it looks at least decent: a beautiful interior, fabric tablecloths and napkins, expensive dishes, etc. This is a delicious restaurant. Delicious and expensive, otherwise nothing. As you understand, the rules of the "appearance" of taverns, familiar to compatriots, in Greece do not work from the word "completely." In Greece, taverns are concentrated primarily on the quality and taste of food. That is, if the food is tasteless, then you can do nothing further - there are no people in this tavern, and there won’t be any. Then the second most important view is the view from the tavern, and only after that, almost in the last turn, we are talking about design, beautiful dishes, napkins, etc.

Ask me, which tavern in Greece is most remembered and sunk into the soul? The answer is simple: it’s a tavern somewhere in the mountain wilderness or inconspicuous nooks of the old city, in a completely ordinary room, with the same ordinary ordinary people who cook and serve food. Indeed, it is delicious food and soulful atmosphere that are remembered, not well-trained waiters and original design. Although this also has the right to be, but certainly not in Greece.

It would be worth starting with the fact that in Greece you always need to pay attention to the sign of the establishment. It is a great rarity that before the tavern in English it was written “taverna”, most likely, in English they would write “restaurant”. But a restaurant is exactly a restaurant with all the attributes: waiters, white tablecloths, etc. Real restaurants in Greece are a rare occurrence that you can only find in large cities, such as Athens or Thessaloniki, or at hotels. The cuisine in them is also usually European. Therefore, the sign “restaurant” is a deliberate substitution of concepts for foreign tourists. If you want to try real Greek cuisine, you need a tavern with its discreet simplicity and "family".

When the stomach is full, you usually want more spectacles. Or if you suddenly get bored of measured relaxation, and there is a desire to dilute the languor of being, you can go to the north of the island, to the small town of Fiskardo. Here is a large marina for yachts, around which everything is touristly tailored for the discerning public. In short - pathetic, expensive, cocktail bars, taverns and restaurants. Everything that your heart desires, for every taste and budget. In Fiskardo, in addition to the ancient architecture, the arrogant and not at all prim young English, blond Scandinavians, funny and loud Italians, drunk and noisy Czechs ... the marina in Fiskardo is large, the audience is motley and colorful. You won’t get bored, that's for sure! But for a relaxing holiday, it is better to choose housing in the immediate vicinity, in Fiskardo itself you should not base.

Meanwhile, we go around the northern part of Kefalonia and smoothly move to the western coast of the island, closer to the impregnable rocky bays and the piercing blue Ionian Sea, well known from publications in glossy magazines. The first thing that the view from the height of the main track clings to is a long cape that stands out at sea. The view is incredible, so it’s impossible to just pass by! This is Assos (Assos) - perhaps one of the most beautiful and spectacular places of Kefalonia.

Assos is a small, cozy town located on the isthmus between the mainland and the peninsula, crowned by a Venetian fortress. The town itself is miniature and very touristy, which is not surprising in view of its special external attractiveness, and in the number of idly staggering tourists can safely compete with the pathos Fiskardo. From afar and near Assos it looks equally cool! Houses with bright colored facades stretch up the slope of a small enclosed bay. On narrow cobbled streets everywhere there are large tubs and tall clay pots with decorative and flowering plants, which I especially like in the south. In the marina, fishing boats and small yachts, taverns with tables along the water, gradually sway, enticing smells of cooked food, and then spicy aromas excite receptors. Colorful reality pleases the eye, and emotions overwhelm inside ... a real Mediterranean idyll.

If you are not too lazy to climb the top of the peninsula to the Venetian fortress (Castle of Assos of the 15th century) along a wide winding path lined with marble, then you will be rewarded for your efforts and perseverance - the views are grandiose!

We move further along the western coast of Kefalonia. In this part of the island, the main road is laid at a decent height. At a decent height along steep cliffs! I don’t know who perceives reality, but I am always impressed when a person develops mountains, “taming” them to his needs. Just imagine: along the western coast of Kefalonia the road is cut in places in huge stone blocks, which causes genuine surprise and, of course, respect for the people who built it. And now, driving along ideal mountain roads is a real pleasure, despite endless turns. After all, each of them opens up a new unique look, and I want to make stops as often as possible in order to capture this beauty as a keepsake. But, alas, there are very few suitable places for this. The track is laid in two lanes, fences on both sides, blind closed turns ...

Following the settlement of Assos is the famous Greek beach Myrtos and one of the few equipped sites along the route where you can stay. This is the observation deck of Myrthos Beach Viewpoint. There are not enough words to express the fullness of feelings and emotions when you see a piercing blue in real life!

Myrtos Beach, along with the Melissani Cave, is a visiting card of Kefalonia. We did not go down to the beach itself; according to reviews, it is not too convenient for swimming. It usually storms heavily and often a strong wind blows, due to the fact that the beach "looks" into the open sea. There is large pebble on the shore, and the depth starts immediately from the shore. But outwardly, especially from a bird's eye view, this is a dream beach.

Further along the western coast of Kefalonia, between Myrtos beach and Zola, there are a few moderately beautiful beaches and lagoons, but we go further - to the “secret” bay. Lost in the mountains at the northwestern tip of the Paliki Peninsula, Atheras Bay strikes with its beauty at a glance. In the carefully enclosed bay, prominent promontory far into the sea, everything is perfectly adapted for swimming and relaxing - moderately secluded, on the shore there are small pebbles, a clean bottom and a calm sea. And the view is awesome, it is very important!

I can not ignore the capital of Kefalonia - Argostoli (Argostoli). This is the main transport hub of the island, most hotels and large supermarkets are concentrated around the capital, and the promenade along the coastal part of the city will bring a lot of pleasure. The city center and the beautiful promenade lined with colorful pebbles framed by date palms are also interesting. And it doesn’t matter whether it is morning, day or evening - in the capital there is something to do at any time of the day.

The city of Argostoli is widely spread in the form of an amphitheater along the banks of a large lagoon. There is an airport near the capital and for fans of spotting this is a place of power. In addition to a large selection of beaches in the vicinity of Argostoli, there are several noteworthy places. For example, the viewpoint on the edge of the cape, the current lighthouse of St. Theodora (Agion Theodoron), better known as the lighthouse of Fanari, and nearby it is the water mill Katavothres Sea Mill. Actually, usually this section (between Argostoli and the lighthouse) tourists fly by car without stopping. But in vain! From Argostoli along the sea, there is a path through a natural park, where along the way there are small bays suitable for swimming, pine, cypress and juniper, thanks to which you can breathe in the heady Mediterranean coniferous air. I can’t even believe that very close to the noisy capital of the island there are such quiet, relatively deserted places.

The mill, located near the lighthouse, is a very unusual place. Interesting is not so much an engineering structure as Katavotres - a unique geological phenomenon of the island of Kefalonia. Typically, on an island, a river flows into the sea, while on Kefalonia everything happens the other way around. Streams of sea water flow into the underwater karst crevices near the village of Katavothres (on the outskirts of Argostoli), then they pass under the island from west to east and appear on the surface already in the village of Karavomilos (near the city of Sami), where they then flow into the cave lake Melissani.

In 1963, geologists from an Austrian university dropped 160 kg of paint in the area of \u200b\u200bthe underground tunnels of the village of Katavotres., And after 15 days, traces of this paint appeared in the water on the eastern side of the island. The Englishman Stevens was the first observer to describe this unusual phenomenon. He decided to use the energy of the water lost in the “catavotra” (in the crevice) and built a water mill there, which we can see today.

What else is remarkable in Argostoli? Every day, morning and evening on the promenade, you can take part in a free "attraction" - feeding sea turtles. One of the days we specially arrived early in the morning on the embankment of Argostoli to see the Caretta-caretta turtles in the vicinity. It happens like this: at 9 a.m., fishermen with a morning catch moor to the pier on the embankment, where the first buyers of fresh fish are already waiting for them. A spontaneous fish mini-market is formed. They immediately cut the fish to the customers and dump the offal here in the water. Turtles come to them to feast on them. If you see crowded people on the quay, it means turtles are there.

Here is the brightest evening promenade and, in principle, only in this place was nightlife seen. In addition, Argostoli has a huge selection of establishments: taverns, restaurants, night clubs, cocktail bars, pizzerias. And, of course, the Greek version of fast food “giradiko” and “suvladzidiko” is widely represented (the first is so called “gyros” for the dish, and the second takes the name from “souvlaki” - these are small kebabs). In terms of cuisine, Argostoli has everything that your heart desires, for every taste. We had dinner here several times in various establishments, but most of all I remember the family-owned Greek restaurant Casa Grec, lost in the narrow streets of the old town.

From Argostoli, you can conveniently and fairly quickly move to the Paliki Peninsula. It can be reached by land, but it is much more comfortable to get there by water. The ferry minibus Argostoli-Lixouri, which departs every half hour from the port of one capital of the island to another and vice versa (Lixouri is the capital of the Paliki Peninsula), takes on board both passengers and cars.

The assemblage point for holidaymakers on the Paliki Peninsula is the popular “red” Xi Beach. We consciously miss it and keep the path a little further, our goal is neighboring Koutala Beach. Most of the beaches on the coast of the Paliki Peninsula are known for their characteristic and expressive combination: a thin strip of bright red sand on the shore and high clay rocks (they say that this clay has a cosmetic effect and you can smear it like in a spa - I can only take a word, we have not tried). It looks very beautiful in sunny weather!

The sea is shallow and calm. Quietly, in isolation, there are practically no people. In my opinion, it is also a great place to relax with young children - small, warm sea, sand.
