Xiamen population. What is worth seeing in Xiamen? More interesting articles

On the islet of Gulanyuy, southwest of Xiamen, mostly foreigners live. This is a paradise district with interesting buildings where the movement of motorcycles and mopeds is prohibited. The city is developing rapidly and has the status of a special economic zone.

Today, most of Xiamen is urbanized, with beaches along the south coast of the island and port facilities along the west coast. The main campus of Xiamen University is also located on the south coast of the island.

In the Jimei district, there is Jimei University and the “Turtle Park” - a memorial complex in honor of the famous Huaqiao, the enlightener of Chen Jiang, where he himself is buried in a traditional tortoise grave.

Also interesting is Yuandang Lake, which is famous for herons of herons and picturesque views after dusk, when the sculpture lights up. Locals in the evenings enjoy relaxing in Bai Lu Zhou Park. In the wonderful Botanical Garden, it is pleasant to stroll and inspect the plants.

Among the other buildings is the Nanputuo Temple of the Tang Dynasty, listed in the national treasures of China. Its pavilions with green roofs are beautiful. Within the territory of the temple there are also the Hall of Great Mercy, the Precious Hall of the Great Hero, the Hall of Heavenly Kings and many pagodas. The Hulishan fortress, dated to the end of the 19th century, is unusual in that its foundation is made of a mixture of camphor, glutinous rice, brown sugar, wood syrup, sand and clay. The granite fortress houses a magnificent collection of cannons from the Ming Dynasty.

The first mention of Xiamen as a city dates back only to 1387, when a sea fortress appeared here. In the XVIII century. lively maritime trade began with Southeast Asia; in order to better control it, in 1727 the capital of Quaizhou district was moved here. Under the Nanking Treaty (1842), the city was open to European trading powers; he received international fame under the name Amoy - this is how he was pronounced in the South Fujian dialect. Xiamen soon became the main port for emigration from China - primarily cool workers to America. In the XX century. the city developed slowly - until it was captured by the economic dynamics of the Deng Xiaoping era. In 1980, Xiamen was one of the first to receive the status of a special economic zone and was among the leaders in the modernization and transformation of China.

Attractions Xiamen

Promenade

Lujiang Dao seafront at the western tip of the island is the front side of the city. It is not too long, but thanks to the abundant greenery has turned into a walking area. Good view of the island of Gu-lanyuy. Ferries moor at the intersection of the promenade with the Zhongshan Lu shopping street.

Zhongshan Lu

Zhongshan Lu did not repeat the mistakes made in other places: old houses with colonnades of colonial times, which allowed shopping in a dry and shady place, were either saved or replaced with new buildings that complement them in size and style.

Gates and Ponds

Inspection begins from the south, from an unusual moment: in front of the temple there are two ponds. This is in the spirit of Feng Shui rules, which are strictly observed in Fujian, but the smaller pond also served to release captured fish into the wild: in this way, people tried to improve their karma. Instead of one temple gate, there are two; they stand on both sides of the ponds; on their axis on a raised terrace follows an internal gate hall - the Hall of the four kings of heaven.

main hall

In the main hall there are statues of the Three precious Buddhas, as well as, behind them, the three holy west: the Savior Buddha Amitabha and his bodhisattva assistants.

Hall of Great Mercy

The spiritual center of the monastery is the Hall of Great Mercy. The name of this octagonal structure in the form of a pavilion, of course, indicates that there is a statue of Guanyin inside.

Other buildings of the complex

The monastery library is the last building on the axis. Along its lateral side, the path leads up the slope to the pavilions, tombstones and small halls. A lot of incense is burned in front of a high rocky block several meters high, decorated with a gilded hieroglyph “fo”, Buddha. Buses 18 or 45 from Zhongshan Lu to the final stop. Work time: daily 8.00-17.00.

Gulanyuy Island

In this place you can have a good rest from the bustle of Xiamen: a small island with sandy beaches and rock outgrowths, a town with narrow streets free of cars, with museums, parks, cafes, restaurants - and piano music! Roads are well-groomed, strict environmental control is carried out.

History

The beauty here back in 1844 was appreciated by the first British consul in Xiamen: he was the first to erect a villa here. At that time, arable lands were still cultivated on Gulanyuy. Over the next 60-80 years, a village gradually emerged, marked by European architectural styles, which still stands today, and not only villas were built here, but also schools, churches and commercial establishments. Japanese also settled here - and wealthy Chinese, because Gulanyuy was not a ghetto for foreigners. In contrast to Tianjin, there were no separate zones of influence of various foreign powers.

Inspection

It takes a good half day to see the most important and breathe a little bit here. At the same time, you can take advantage of electric cars that travel along a 6-kilometer route around the island. But most of the way should be done on foot. However, Gulanyuy is such a place where you can stay longer. Do you want to take a week off after the stress of traveling around China? It is unlikely that you can find a more comfortable place than here.

Piano Garden Qingyuan

When touring on an open electric bus, you need to at least make one stop: get off when you pass a large sandy beach after a trip along the northern tip (or, if you missed the stop, then at the second beach) and go uphill to the nearby Piano Garden, a well-groomed park, which includes an art gallery, an audio-video hall and a large aviary, which you can enter.

Zhiguangyan Sunlight Rock

From Piano Garden, you can take the cable car to the Rock of Sunlight, the highest point of the island (93 m). It makes sense to climb to the very top and enjoy the panorama. On the eastern side of the peak is the Temple of the Rock of Sunlight, a new, but sustained in the same style ensemble with an open-air statue of Guanyin.

Museums

If you leave the park around the Rock of Sunlight not near the temple (through the north gate), but through the south, then you will find yourself on a sandy beach (the second during the tour) and going east along it, you will find yourself at the piano museum with seventy instruments of all kinds countries, occupying two buildings in the middle of a beautiful garden Shuzhuhanhuayuan. Moving further along the main street, which rises slightly uphill, you will achieve the following goal: the former British consulate, a one-story, brilliantly restored and remarkably located building built in 1870. It houses the Museum of Coins. Opening hours of both museums: daily 9.00-12.00, 13.30-17.00.

Haiyueyuan Park

A somewhat curious combination: on the one hand - a sandy beach and elegant "summer villas" that can be rented for a beach vacation, on the other hand - a pompous-nationalist bronze relief in honor of the commander Zheng Chenggong, who expelled the Dutch from Taiwan in 1661 - therefore he considered a patriot. At the same time, they intentionally forget that Zheng, as a supporter of the Ming dynasty, fought with the Beijing authorities - the new Manchu dynasty - and created an independent (albeit short-lived) kingdom in Taiwan. Zheng is now the banner under which the campaign is being conducted to return Taiwan “to its native state,” therefore, in addition to the bronze sculpture of the commander, there is also a monumental monument: from a large cliff in the southeast corner of the park, he courageously and decisively looks at the sea, in the direction Taiwan.

From the pier, Dragon Head Lane (Longtou Xiang) leads in the direction of the Rock of Sunlight. This is Gulanyuy shopping street; there are also restaurants. Having eaten there, you can also visit Xiamen Undersea World, a modern aquarium just north of the marina.

In Gulanyuy, there is the highest “density of piano per capita” in all of China. In total there are six hundred, one for thirty islanders. To have a piano in villas was considered “good form”, and not only among Europeans. Today, the city music school also makes its contribution. And do not forget about the piano museum. True, in Piano Garden piano is present only in the title.

How to get there

Amoy has an airport not far from the city, from where planes fly to all major cities of China and to Hong Kong. Direct trains run from the city station, in particular, to Nanchang, Shanghai, Kunming and Xi'an, as well as to Wuyi. From the square in front of the station, buses leave for Quanzhou.

Purchases

There are several good tea shops on Zhongshan Lu's main shopping street that sell typical Fujian semi-fermented Oolong tea and tea utensils.

Of all the Chinese cities that I visited, I liked only one - Xiamen, a port city located directly opposite Taiwan. All the rest, including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guilin, Nanning, Xi'an and others - were weary and caused the desire to move on on the second day. And I didn’t want to leave Xiamen. When I walked along its streets, there was no strange feeling that I had already been here. Then I realized where such a thought came from - Xiamen very much resembles Malaysian, where I really visited last year. Look at the article about Penang, I wonder if you also think that the cities are very similar? Amoy I also liked the wonderful cuisine, favorably different from what I had the previous two weeks in other regions of China. And finally, the stay in this city took place under the “flag” of the upcoming sea voyage to, which I had been waiting for and anticipating for a long time!

The city has an extremely unusual location on an almost round island a kilometer from the Chinese coast. Pay attention to the other two islands to the right of Xiamen: this is Kinmen (Kinmen) already controlled by Taiwan, where I actually went by ferry later in the evening of the same day. Yes, my stay in the city was brief -

We flew here with Xiamen Airlines flight from Guilin, took the bus to the center -

My companion's hotel was booked deep in the old city. We decided this way: I will take her to the hotel to make sure that everything is in order, and then leave my things there too and we will walk out to accompany me to the port -

Yes, yes, it is very reminiscent of Penang. In China, there is very little where the buildings of the late 19th - early 20th century have been preserved, but here you see the real China in the form in which it was before the communists

Folk "edalny" is something with something. It seems that for the first time in my travels in China I ate heartily -

Local food compares favorably with what you understand. Compare, for example, with Korean cuisine, from the "wealth" of which I took off almost a week -

And the girl was to live in a building called "Huy Plaza", laugh-laugh, and even such a forgetful thing as I did not have to record. On the way back from Taiwan, I can easily find this place -

Amoy is also known for the islet Gulangyu (Gulanyuy), where the 19th-century Victorian buildings have been preserved. A second Hong Kong could appear on this islet and everything went to that. The fact is that when China lost the Opium Wars in 1842, the Europeans settled in the area, confident that Xiamen and Gulanui would become the eternal outpost of European civilization in China. Residences, consulates, a hospital, a church were actively built there. But then there was the Japanese occupation, and then Maoist China, and the European period came the inevitable end -

Unfortunately, I did not have time to visit the islet. Ferries run there every 15-20 minutes, but in addition to the lack of time, I did not like the greed of the local authorities. They for each "zilch" tear money, and such money is not small. They completely blocked the majority of the island and began to take money for entry, climb a hill and take a panorama - pay (60 yuan = $ 10), go through the city park - pay (30 yuan = $ 5), and so on. I figured that a trip to the islet would cost about $ 20 and waved a hand at him. We’ll talk about Chinese greed separately, in another post -

But back to Xiamen -

If you initially decided that it was a small colonial town, then you were wrong. It is a decent-sized metropolis with a population of over 4 million inhabitants -

By the way, remember the recent post ""? So we climbed the very mountain through which the mentioned railway tunnel was dug. The mountain offers a great view of the whole Amoy and the adjacent Gulanui island (the one directly opposite and with red roofs) -

Yes, this is the same Gulanui island, the visit of which will cost you about 20 bucks -

On the slopes of the mountain there are numerous parks with tropical vegetation -

An unusual exhibition was discovered in one of the parks. This grandfather is made from the root of a tree -

The same railway tunnel cut through the mountain -

A typical Chinese dog, in about 70% of cases, dogs found in China were of this breed -

Meanwhile, the hour of departure of my ferry to Taiwan is approaching. This was preceded by a "passport" adventure, when I was almost deployed at check-in. Remember when I was recorded

Xiamen (Amoy) and Gulanyuy Island - Fujian, China 2016?>

Xiamen (Amoy) and Gulanyuy Island - Fujian, China 2016

Xiamen or Amoy - a large port city in Fujian on the seashore. From here to Henan Island is a stone's throw, i.e., an hour of flight. And opposite the main island of Xiamen, a nice island Gulanyuy is located in a 15-30 minute ferry ride. With him we began our acquaintance with the city.

Gulanyuy - Another China

Gulangyu China is an island of colonial culture in modern China.

Gulanyuy (Gulang Yu) - an island of 1000 monuments of the colonial era: villas in a mixed Western Chinese style. As early as 1880 a settlement of European consulates appeared here with hospitals, hotels, churches, post offices and even a local English newspaper.

And most of the well-preserved estates were built in 1925. Most major attractions are paid. The cost of a single ticket is 100 yuan. To see the island, you do not have to pay for it, you can just walk along the narrow streets and along the embankments.

Be sure to look at the beaches of the island, if you wish, you can even swim in the sea.

In the evening, one of the streets turns into a night market, with a good selection of street food. The most delicious is the special round dumplings that aunts expertly prepare right before your eyes. Around the sea, so a lot of seafood. Such dumplings are both pork and shrimp. An omelet with mussels and small octopuses is popular.

Everywhere they give dried fruit and dried meat to taste, all this is very tasty.

Gulanyuyu prices bite because everything here is imprisoned for tourism. If you can eat for 100-200 rubles together, then accommodation is cheaper than 450 rubles for a bed can not be found. There is an option to put up a tent on the beach. For some reason, the ferry to the island is only from one place, from the central pier, although on some maps there are as many as 3 ferry crossings. And the cost is very expensive, 45 yuan per person. Remember that this is a round-trip price, despite the fact that the ticket is kind of frail, a little ticket. We accidentally and safely threw this ticket out, because the ability to return back on this ticket was not mentioned anywhere. At the checkout, no one warned us either.

Stay

Xiamen - Fujian's most famous city

Xiamen is the third most expensive city in China. And salaries are probably appropriate. There are no cheap hotels for foreigners at all. If you come across some kind of inexpensive hostel, then foreigners are definitely not accepted into it, they simply do not have a license for this.

We have been here twice: the first time — when we arrived from Chaozhou, and the second time — on the way back, when we returned from the north of the province. Both times we needed housing. The police helped us fit into one hotel, although we did not want this at all. I just asked at the restaurant if they knew where cheap housing was nearby, and the staff called the police. They asked us to wait, and after 30 minutes of waiting, we saw that the police had arrived. This is how the Chinese are worried about foreigners.

Sometimes, by the way, we give ourselves a break and make these kinds of purchases, which greatly surprise and embarrass the Chinese.

For another 1 day we found accommodation through the couchsurfing site. It's funny that the guy himself could not accept, but he gave the contact of a friend who happily provided his accommodation in the form of a bed. The owner, however, did not appear. But other guests shared their room with us - traveling Chinese from other provinces.

Grigory Potemkin and gifts from RealChinaTea

On this day, we also met with an interesting tea entrepreneur, famous in his circles, Grigory Potemkin, leading his project RealChinaTea. He has strong texts on the site and a well-developed brand - the basis of the success of his business. The tea supplied by him is also good. We were convinced of it ourselves. Having agreed, we went to his office and spent a couple of hours talking and drinking tea. I was entrusted with brewing, and I tried my best. And finally, Grisha gave us as many as 4 jars of red Chinese and Taiwanese teas. One of the cheapest among them - Tan Yang - we liked the most.

Xiamen Attractions

1. ZhongshanLu Pedestrian Street

ZhongshanLu Street is one of the main attractions Xiamen - disappointed. We visited a pedestrian street with a scarce, as it seemed to us, choice of street food. The fact is that this area is rich in seafood, and they can not afford. Therefore, we tried to try something affordable. Triangles with rice and pork in steamed banana leaves, a local version of dumplings, peanut sweet soup, etc. I can’t say that I liked all these delicacies, it’s painfully specific. True, we tried everything in one place, maybe they just cook poorly there.

2. Nanputosa Monastery

1000 year old nanputosa Buddhist Monastery - The largest and most revered Chinese Buddhist temple in the city. The temple is interesting for its striking decoration of the roofs and the four-armed sculpture of Guanyin with four faces in the octagonal hall of the Great Empathy (Dabei Dian).

3. Xiamen port

The views of the port of Xiamen and from the port are quite picturesque. The port is huge, one of the largest in China.

………………….

Our second visit to Xiamen is unusual. Trying to make some money for lodging and transport, I decided to sell old Russian banknotes at the railway station in Xiamen. Wrote a sign in Chinese - sales announcements. We sat near the shopping center, the Chinese comrades are watching, are interested, but do not buy, are afraid. The janitor seemed to want to lower the price, but escaped without even really starting. We moved to the box office. Then people came up to us, they say, go to the police, they will help there. They led by the hand, turned to the employees of the railway station, they say - wait for the police. Nobody appeared for a long time, but then an ordinary station employee came and incredulously asked what was the matter. Even learning about our problem - a small amount of money, he was still very suspicious of our personalities and asked for a passport and called somewhere. Then to someone else. And then he brought 100 yuan from his boss and added us a second ticket in a sitter to Guangzhou the next day in the evening, that day was gone. So we were the owners of two tickets to Guangzhou for a harsh 12-hour journey in the cheapest sitting carriage. At night.

This was only the beginning of our adventures on this day, but I will write about this in the right place later, in another post.

Transportation Xiamen (China)

Well-developed public buses, including an express BRT line on a dedicated line / highway. The high-speed city bus line was not tried, since it was never needed, they used ordinary buses. But in general, I liked the Xiamen transport: convenient, cheap, fast, there are almost no traffic jams or they are not at all big.

How to ride China's city buses for free. Important!

 1. Enter the second door, from which trustworthy Chinese are just coming out. In 80% of cases, especially with a large number of people, they will not be asked to pay for a ticket.
 2. Go into the front, right door and give the driver a piece of paper 100 yuan. Confidently show that you need to go and ask for signs or change in Chinese. In 99.5% of cases, the driver will not be surrendered, and he will not drive you out. * Only once we were asked to leave the bus and not return without trifles. We didn’t have time to leave, the local grandfather decided to pay the fare for us, thank him very much for that.

* Please note that the author of these methods does not recommend resorting to fraudulent techniques with the aim of traveling in public transport. The “How to Drive to China Buses for Free” techniques are experimental methods used only to enrich experience, and not for the purpose of daily methodical use. Remember that asking for free travel and getting permission, thereby violating nothing is the only legal method of travel both in Chinese buses and in any other public transport in the world.

Ferries to Gulanyuy

Google maps and Maps.me maps persistently indicate that there are several crossings from the main island of Xiamen to Gulanyuy Island, but we saw and used only one - from the far north pier. A large, modern ferry has a harmful essence - they sell only expensive round-trip tickets for 40 yuan. By the way, we stupidly and successfully threw them out upon reaching the Gulanyuy Island. We made this very grave mistake due to the fact that no one warned us about the reverse property of the ticket and our or even rather my stupidity. Conclusion: never throw out any checks, tickets, official papers for at least a few days, until it is obvious that this paper will not help you save your money or your life (and this probably happens).

Due to our sluggishness, we had to buy return tickets, i.e. we paid one and a half cost of the return ticket Xiamen-Gulanyuy. Well, that will be a lesson to us.

Xiamen food. Fujian cuisine

 • There is a tasty one: round dumplings (meatballs) with shrimp or pork filling (very tasty dough and the broth in which they swim). Very tasty dough. Shrimp - pink in color, and pork - white, although the dough is the same.

 • Chic soup with seafood and noodles - we were treated to it in some cafe-restaurant by a local acquaintance.
 • But there are some very strange ones: even peanut soup I can’t appreciate, it’s kind of sweet.

Of course, this is not a complete list of what we tried, and even more so that you can eat in Symyn, but we did not have the money or the time to try everything. The city and the province is famous for seafood. A lot of different dishes with them: from grilled squid and octopus to soups and various dumplings. There are desserts - here they are - for an amateur, mainly.

Housing in Xiamen. Where to stay in Xiamen

Coaching Surfing in Xiamen well presented, but you need to send requests in advance. We stayed for 1 night with couchsurfing and it was an interesting and free experience.

Hostels in Xiamen there are cheap and expensive. An expensive hostel on Gulanyuy Island is a good option, as This is the cheapest option to stay on a tourist island if you do not have a tent or do not want to sleep in it. There are cheap ones in Xiamen itself, but most only accept people with a Chinese ID card (an analogue of our passport), be careful.

Hotels xiamen Islands - The cheapest one can be cheap, even 50 yuan per double room, but it will also not accept foreigners. But having such a license will be expensive, from 120-130 yuan.

Weather in Xiamen

Xiamen's weather is changeable. For 1.5 days it seemed to us that the weather was like in St. Petersburg: gray, gloomy, drizzling rain. And at another time, the bright sun was shining and a fresh breeze was blowing - it was real sunny summer weather, although the yard was the end of autumn. If we get lucky.

Conclusions about Xiamen

Xiamen is an interesting city. There are attractions that can and should be visited. There are those that are not required to attend. For example, the tourist street Zhunshalu with food and souvenirs did not hook us, did not even like it. You can skip, there is nothing like that. But the night tourist market in Gulanyuy is a cool place, fun and tasty, it is recommended to visit.

Of the pluses: good transport accessibility of the main attractions, delicious seafood and some other local food, in sunny weather - a pleasant city, enough people speak English, Gulanyuy island with colonial architecture.

Cons too. The high cost of the city, some local detachment, in this regard (the city is expensive, you need to earn a lot of money to live well here), strange food comes across, sometimes bad weather, similar to St. Petersburg (heavy, gray, with rain).

You can visit the city, but 2-3 days is enough to get acquainted. Be sure to spend one of these days on Gulanyuy Island. If you visit the paid attractions of the city and islands, then, probably, 1 day more. Has anyone visited these attractions, what is your opinion - are they worth the money?

In China, do not forget to visit the most beautiful places: the WI mountains in Fujian, Lijiang and Dali in Sichuan, Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, Guangzhou in Guangdong and Xian (Xian) in Shaanxi, Chaozhou and Fenghuang in Guangdong, the Taoist mountains of Wudshan and Huashan beautiful. Sichuan is shocking

Xiamen is a relatively prosperous small town on the southeast coast of China across from Taiwan. About two million people live there. In 2006, a survey named it the second most liveable city in China. It has the cleanest and most pleasant living environment in China. This city received income (benefit) from the air of the ocean and from investments from foreign Chinese and Taiwanese companies. It has long been an important port city for both the Chinese empire and foreign empires, because the natural harbor in the city is good and very deep. Although it is not a big city in China, its port and airport are in twelfth place in China. It has a global transportation network and a different financial system with foreign banks and investment plays an important role in the economy. Relative prosperity will make the trip around the city more comfortable, and there are many historical monuments, some beaches and park areas, Xiamen University, South Puton Temple and Guilanjun Island, a pedestrian area. All these places are the main travel attractions in the city.

Detailed description

The city consists of two islands called “Gulanyun Island” and “Xiamen Peninsula”, some islets, and large areas along the Tulon River. The city government disposes of 1565 square kilometers, which is divided into 6 districts. Xiamen was Minister of Foreign Enclaves at the end of the 19th century, after the British forced the Chinese to open it as a port in 1843. This brought Gulanyun Island and the Xiamen Peninsula many foreign-style buildings built by residents from around the world.

Gulanyun Island

Not only did foreigners come to Xiamen, but people from Xiamen moved to other countries for hundreds of years, so everyone knew that 400,000 Chinese living abroad were ancestors of Xiamen. The rulers of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) even tried to prevent the departure of Fujian people to other places. Now, overseas Chinese are investing heavily in building Amoy industries and enterprises, including a huge shopping center called SM Amoy, which has a car park for 1,100 cars. The car park opened in 2001. It was built by a Filipino-Chinese businessman. Wal-Mart has a mega store in the mall.

Amoy is an ideal venue for all kinds of international conferences and exhibitions. There is an annual investment and trade exhibition called the China International Investment and Trade Fair (CIFIT). It is one of the largest in China. CIFIT is held in Xiamen every September from 8 to 11. There are many other conferences, and the government wants to promote the city as a venue for international conferences. Amoy will strive to become a famous city for international conferences and exhibitions.

Unique Hagga Earth Buildings Near Xiamen

Yuontin County

If you have enough time, you can visit the Hagga Earth Buildings in Yuonting County (about 307 kilometers from Xiamen). Hagg's unique earthen buildings, round or square, were originally designed as large fortresses and houses in them. These buildings were built with a mixture of clay and sandy soils, and the wall could be thicker than 1 meter (3.3 feet). The internal structure is made of wood. The largest earthen buildings in Fujian, and the construction time is half a century, developed by three generations. The stadium was built in the 1640s, the building is a resident of the Jiang family (江 姓 家族). During this most prosperous period, there were 800 people living inside the building.

Because the famous unique Hagga Earth Buildings in Yuontin County are dispersive, the best way to travel is to sign up for a tour group, and you'd better stay the least at night in Yuontin County (if not, you can be in a hurry and be tired). Several Hagg Earthen buildings have been designed in hotels, and you can live in these hotels to enjoy a unique experience. However, the condition of these hotels is clean and simple, but not as good as in the hotels.
