Vienna with its rich culture and history is simply oversaturated with sights, which creates certain problems for tourists - there are so many interesting places that even the most hasty tourist will not see them in a couple of days. But we decided to challenge this situation and made a walking route in Vienna for one day.

We warn you right away: Vienna is very rich in such sights, the rush to inspect which is useless. Therefore, in one day it is unlikely to be able to inspect everything. First, focus on the main places allocated by us, and if there is time left, it will be possible to take it to places from the section “What else is interesting nearby”.

Almost all the places we described are located in the historical center - look at the map to visualize the route in Vienna.

Naschmarkt Market

You can start your day with a bustling market a little south of the central part of the city - Naschmarkt. There are about 120 outlets and restaurants of a wide variety of cuisines - from Asian to European. A flea market is organized here every Saturday.

As in any European market, here you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, seasonings and spices, local delicacies. There is even - attention - a stall with Russian pies, though it does not look very attractive.

It is a good idea to have breakfast in one of the restaurants and cafes in order to feel the atmosphere of the city.

Museumsquartier

Further, the walking route through Vienna will lead the tourist to the Museum Quarter. The choice of museums for tourists is huge - you can get acquainted with Austrian art at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and if you want to switch to something else, please, directly opposite, on the other side of Maria Theresa Square, is the Museum of Natural History.

Google Maps, by the way, allows you to walk a yellow man right inside both museums.

Parks Volksgarten, Heldenplatz or Burggarten

After visiting several museums in a row, it's time to take a walk in nature and give your head a rest. And right in front of the Museum Quarter there are immediately three charming parks - Volksgarten, Heldenplatz or Burggarten.

The Austrians, unlike the same Northern Europeans, who gravitate towards natural, untouched natural landscapes, have a tradition to turn any park into a work of art. Almost all Viennese parks neatly planted flowers, all bushes and lawns are neatly trimmed, here and there are lovely benches and small fountains.

Therefore, you can choose any of these parks to relax after a busy museum program.

Hofburg

One of the most powerful European dynasties - the Habsburgs - left behind an impressive legacy, including several magnificent palaces. One of them - Hofrubg - is located just in the city center within walking distance of the Museum Quarter.

Today's Hofburg, which served as the winter residence of the ruling elite, was built on the site of an old medieval castle - as you can see, the construction site was not chosen by chance. It is noteworthy that the Hofburg was built in several stages - almost every Austrian emperor completed another wing with a courtyard.

You can spend all day only on this place: tourists are offered to stroll through the imperial apartments, explore the treasury in the oldest part of Hofburg, visit the Sisi Museum dedicated to the life of Empress Elizabeth.

There is also a Spanish riding school and a silver collection - a collection of numerous cutlery, decor items and other precious gizmos. You can also go to the small zoo and the papyrus museum.

As you can see, already one palace offers entertainment for the whole day - plan your visit well if you want to have time to walk along the entire route along Vienna, in addition to the Hofburg.

Albertina Art Gallery. Albertina used to be a "guest house" at the imperial court, but now an impressive collection of paintings by the most famous artists of not only Austria, but throughout Europe - Monet, Picasso, Degas, Klimt, etc. If there is no time at all, then go at least to the store at the gallery - there you can buy a lot of interesting gizmos.

National Library. Such places are not interesting to all tourists, but for some reason we are fascinated by old libraries with tens of thousands of the same old books. This Hofburg library is the largest in the country, and now it is, of course, modernized, but tourists still have the opportunity to visit the old halls and small themed museums that are in the building.

Crypt of the Capuchins. Here, in the imperial crypt, 149 members of the Habsburg dynasty found their last refuge. In November 2016, it was 100 years since the death of the last Austrian emperor - Franz Joseph I. It is noteworthy that the hearts and other insides of the Habsburgs were decided to be placed separately.

St. Stephen's Cathedral

Moving deeper into the center, we will approach the most significant place in Vienna - St. Stephen's Cathedral with a recognizable roof - green-black, with the arms of the Habsburg dynasty.

The cathedral is interesting not only in terms of architecture. For 4.50 € (for children - 1.50 € up to 14 years old) you can climb onto the south tower 137 meters high and admire the Viennese roofs. From here, the city seems very “smooth” - rarely is a building, except perhaps some other cathedral, leaning higher than the rest.

For 5.50 € (2 € for children) you can go down to the Catacombs. It used to be a great honor to be buried in the cathedral or at least next to it. However, special interest in underground catacombs appeared only in the 1730s, when an outbreak of bubonic plague began in Vienna, and Emperor Charles VI forbade funerals in cemeteries inside city walls. Thus, the dead were obligated to be buried underground, including in these catacombs. In total, 10-11 thousand bodies were buried here.

Vienna Opera

The cultural program in Vienna ends with the very world famous Vienna opera.

Performances usually begin at 19:00 or 19:30. From St. Stephen's Cathedral, you can walk here in 5-10 minutes.

Despite the fact that at St. Stephen's Cathedral, sellers of tickets to the opera will run into you anyway, still check the prices in advance online, where they are as transparent as possible.

Ticket prices range from 10 € to 200 € depending on the selected seats. With a very limited budget, you can go to the ticket office at least 1.5 hours before the presentation, in order to queue up for standing tickets for 3-4 €. But this is not much fun, spend a lot of time, and not the fact that you will get tickets. Therefore, you can simply pay even the most inexpensive, but a seat in advance.

How to get to Vienna yourself

By plane

Vienna is a trouble-free city in terms of getting to it. There are direct flights from St. Petersburg and Moscow. Flying with a transplant is not profitable, the price does not change downward.

Our low-cost airline Pobeda flies from Moscow, their prices are pleasant, but you need to study all their requirements for hand luggage very well, since a penalty for violations can make your flight not at all budgetary. The high-speed train City Airport Train (CAT) travels only 16 minutes to the same station as the previous one without stops, but this pleasure will cost 11 € for a one-way ticket and 17 € if you take a ticket immediately in both directions. But travel for children under 14 is free.

Public transportation in Vienna

There are two public transport areas in Vienna. The fare differs within the zone and when leaving the zone. If you are traveling outside the first zone, you need to buy two tickets and compost two tickets at once.

What to see in Vienna on your own

From ground walks, I recommend going from St. Stephen's Cathedral to walk along Graben Street to Hofburg and Maria Theresa Square, take a tram along Ringstrasse Street or walk along it, take a look at the Hundertwasser houses, and explore the surroundings of Schönbrunn Palace. This program can be put in 2-3 days. If you plan to visit the main museums of Vienna, you need to spend a week in Vienna. Opera is recommended only for lovers, this event is expensive, for example, a ticket to “Traviata” for 11/23/2019 costs from 52 to 285 €, cheap seats are located very far from the stage. First day

The most central attraction of Vienna is St. Stephen's Cathedral. The silhouette of the cathedral is painted on all metro schemes. This cathedral is the heart of old Vienna. In almost all houses on the ground floors there are shops and cafes. On the street Kolchmarkt stands the famous cafe "Demel", one of two historical cafes related to the famous cake "Sacher". In the high tourist season in historical cafes, the queue can be significant, in December there was no queue at all, it was checked personally.

Museums leave the next day to proceed with fresh energy. However, my recommendations regarding museums are not binding, always think whether it would be interesting to you personally. There are options, you can go to museums, or you can walk in parks, depending on weather conditions and your preferences. Weather conditions can be different, in the case of prolonged rains, museums can save the situation.

Second day

Ringstrasse is considered a must-see, this is a 5.3 km long circular boulevard. On this boulevard you can ride on a special tourist tram. The trip takes only 25 minutes. The tram offers audio accompaniment in Russian through headphones. Tickets cost 8 €, for children from 6 to 15 years - 4 €. Weather permitting, you can take a walk along the Ringstrasse. You will see the building of the Vienna Opera, the Burgtheater, the parliament, the building of the town hall, everything is very monumental and majestic there.

Sissy is one of the legends of Austria and Vienna as well, so you should think ahead of time if you would like to learn more about the beloved Empress of the Crown and visit the Sissi Museum, the imperial chambers and the silver pantry. Fourth day

Vienna, as the former capital of the Habsburg empire, still holds treasures collected by generations of kings and emperors. You can touch this wealth by visiting the Habsburg Treasury. There you will see no less, but the famous Spear of fate, the Holy Grail, the crown of Charlemagne and much more.

I suggest visiting the Schönbrunn Palace and everything near it. One day is definitely not enough. Schönbrunn Palace itself is the former summer residence of the imperial family, it is surrounded by a beautiful park, nearby is a magnificent zoo and greenhouses. One day trips from Vienna on your own

If you did not find yourself guided tours at affordable prices, then below I will tell you how to organize a couple of trips yourself. Tickets for trains can be bought at the train station or on the Internet on the Austrian railways website, where you can get your own route through Austria and immediately see how much the ticket will cost, at the last moment a ticket can cost more than a pre-purchased one on the Internet. For suburban trips, you can also use Student Agency buses (English), tickets for buses will cost less than for trains, but Student Agency buses go only to neighboring countries.

From Vienna to Bratislava on your own

If you want a break from the Austrian high cost, then you should go to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The distance is only 66 km. Departure of the train from Vienna Central Station, arrival at Bratislava Central Station. Travel time is 1 hour, trains run every hour. Round-trip ticket price 20,20 €.

On the bus, round-trip tickets will cost only 10 €, but the bus travels 1.5 hours. In Vienna, buses depart from the Stadion metro station in Bratislava and are not in the center, but public transport in Bratislava costs significantly less than in Vienna. To Vienna Woods on Your Own

The Vienna Woods can be seen without moving far from Vienna. It is enough to get to the final stop of the tram. See all the possible options for walking through the woods (English), not far from Vienna. In general, of course the Vienna Forest is a broad concept, it is very large.

Official excursions in the Vienna Woods involve a visit to the town of Baden, the castle of Liechtenstein and the town of Mödling, where Prince Rudolph, an underground lake on the outskirts of Mödling in the village of Hinterbruhl, committed suicide. The cost of an organized excursion starts from 55 € per person, without tickets to the cave and castle.

In principle, you can arrange this route yourself, but you will have to walk a lot.

From Vienna to Mödling Bahnhof can be reached by train in just 20 minutes, a ticket costs only 4.40 €. Walk around the town towards the cave 3.5 km, visit the cave with the largest underground lake in Europe (the cost of visiting the cave is 10 €, the tour lasts 45 minutes). From the cave to the castle of Liechtenstein, only 1.5 km, but uphill (adult ticket cost 9 €), excursions are only in German and English. To Puchberg am Schneeberg on your own

People go to the small town of Puchberg mainly to climb Mount Schneeberg about 2000 meters high, go hiking or skiing in winter. From the mountain in good weather offers a breathtaking view of the valley. You will be pulled up the mountain by the special Salamander train via a cog railway for only 31 €, mountain railways or cable cars are traditionally expensive. In winter, the train operates on a truncated schedule and route. You can certainly go on foot, but for this you need to stay in very good shape. To the Wachau Valley on Your Own

Wachau Valley was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. There you will find very beautiful landscapes with ancient towns located along the banks of the Danube and a huge baroque abbey. The best time to visit is of course summer, autumn.

1. train ride to the town of Melk (1.5 hours)
2. visit to the very beautiful Benedictine Abbey on the banks of the Danube
3. a boat trip to the town of Krems (1.5 hours). Many go to a stop earlier in the village of Dürnstein to climb to the local castle and admire the Danube from a height.
4. departure back to Vienna by train from Krems. (1 hour)

The route can be done in the opposite direction. It does not matter. This pleasure will cost about 50 €.

From Vienna to Budapest on your own

The second way to take a break from Vienna's high cost is a trip to Budapest. It is only 240 km from Vienna to Budapest, and a train ride from Vienna Central Station to Keleti Station in Budapest takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Round-trip tickets cost about 40 €. When traveling by bus, the cost of one-way tickets is only from 9 to 11 €, but the bus will have to go with a change in Bratislava and it will take 4 hours already.

In principle, if you go one day, it makes sense to take an organized excursion to Budapest from Vienna, it is only 15 € more expensive than train tickets, but a walking tour of Budapest is included in the price and you don’t need to think about anything.

The currency of Hungary is forint, so the money will have to be changed. In half a day you can get around and take a walk on the opposite bank of the Danube. Although Budapest certainly deserves more, it is possible to spend a few days in the Hungarian capital as a good idea.

From Vienna to Salzburg on your own

Many people want to go to Salzburg, this is the birthplace of Mozart, the most musical city in Austria. It is almost 300 km from Vienna to Salzburg and you will have to spend 2 hours 20 minutes on the way. Round-trip train tickets cost 51 €. Cheap buses do not run in Austria, alas. The train will pass by the city of Linz, which may also be worthy of inspection on another day. Ready excursion to Salzburg per person starts from 119 €. Salzburg is an interesting city, it is quite possible to plan an overnight stay there and continue your acquaintance the next day.

The vessel is comfortable with a good view. The catamaran departs from the Schwedenplatz metro, first goes along the Danube Canal, then along the Danube, past fishing huts on stilts, with nets. In Bratislava, ride a train in the old city, take a walk along the plane-tree area, and try dishes of national cuisine.
