Moss mountains - one of the most picturesque places in the Nizhny Novgorod region. But besides its natural beauties, this place on a steep sandy river bank under the canopy of centuries-old pine trees is notable for its history. But first things first.

Moss mountains are a ridge of dune hills stretching from the southeastern outskirts of Bor to the village of Oktyabrsky. The height of the hills is at least 50 meters from the level of the Volga. They got their name from the moss, which is abundantly covered. In another way, this place was also called the Fofanov Mountains (from the word "fofan" - a fool, a simpleton) - this name spoke of the frivolity of these mountains, compared with the Dyatlovy Mountains located on the opposite bank of the Volga. Archaeologists have discovered on these sand dunes traces of human presence from the Neolithic to the time of the Finno-Ugric tribes living here.

However, the Moss Mountains became very famous as a resting place for two world famous celebrities - Maxim Gorky and Fedor Chaliapin. Gorky first visited here in 1900 when he came to visit his acquaintances, the architect Malinovsky and his wife, Elena Konstantinovna. At that time, a holiday village grew up in this place, in which the Nizhny Novgorod intelligentsia loved to relax. The next summer Gorky came to rest on the Moss Mountains with his family - his wife, two children, a grandmother and a nanny. They again settled in the cottage at Malinovsky. In 1902, when Fyodor Chaliapin arrived in Nizhny Novgorod on tour, he also visited Malinovsky's dacha at the invitation of Gorky, with whom he was a close friend. Here, over the Volga expanses, Chaliapin sang for his friends gathered for a "summer concert".

In memory of this remarkable fact, in 2012, on the site of the former legendary Malinovsky summer residence, a monument was erected to two great people of the Silver Age - writer Maxim Gorky and singer Fyodor Chaliapin. The monument in the form of two bronze figures was made according to the model of the Nizhny Novgorod sculptor Alexander Gorshkov. Nearby there are several viewing platforms with benches from where you can admire beautiful views of Nizhny Novgorod. Here, every year at the beginning of autumn, the festival of high music "Chaliapin Meetings" is held.

In addition to Gorky and Chaliapin, the cottage village on the Moss Mountains was visited by the publicist Chirikov, writer Melnikov-Pechersky, photographer Dmitriev, historian Bogdanovich and many other famous people.

Moss Mountains is a suitable place for outdoor enthusiasts. In winter, there are especially many skiing enthusiasts who want to ride stoboards and sledges.

To get to the Moss Mountains from Nizhny Novgorod, you can get to Bor on the Kirov highway or by cable car. Next, drive through the Steklozavodskoye highway and after reaching Sanatornaya Street to the Quartz Stadium, turn right after Mayakovsky Street. The car can be parked at the cafe near U Chaliapin.
