Weight of baggage and hand luggage. How much baggage is allowed on the plane for free. Rules for baggage and hand luggage at Aeroflot

In any travel by air, luggage remains one of the main concerns of passengers. How many bags you can take with you, what norms apply to the weight and size of luggage, whether a suitcase with things for a baby relies without a separate seat, how much the overweight will cost, and how to deal with lost or damaged luggage - these and many other questions are always relevant, in including for tourists with experience. The tourist. Roux prepared his guidebook on general rules and some features of baggage flights.

Baggage allowance on the plane: general points

The flight is quite light - a rarity even for passengers of low-cost airlines. At a minimum, you can not do without a bag for documents or a laptop. The bulk of things in suitcases and bulk / heavy bags travel, as you know, not in the cabin, but with checked baggage, the allowable weight and dimensions of which are established by the carrier. That is why it is so important to have information: to know the latest free baggage allowance on the plane of the selected airline at a paid ticket fare.

As a rule, the airline tariff schedule provides for free and paid baggage allowance. Conditions are determined not only by parameters (weight and size, number of pieces of baggage), but also by the direction / duration of the flight, and, of course, the paid class of service on board.

Most airlines provide economy-class passengers with one free piece of checked baggage (up to 10 kg) and one piece of hand luggage. Weight limits, as already mentioned, everyone has different, but basically one bag / suitcase up to 20-23 kg is checked in for luggage, for a child up to 2 years old (without a separate seat) - up to 10 kg. For passengers of the first and business class, often two luggage places are provided, so in some cases a flight with heavy baggage with an increased class may be more profitable than an economic one with a surcharge.

You can take on a flight more than the free rate - subject to a surcharge for the advantage, but there are restrictions: according to the rules of the main international airports, one piece of baggage cannot weigh more than 32 kg. Baggage exceeding the limits of weight and dimensions for one seat must be agreed with representatives of the airline.

When traveling together “Combine” baggage You can not always: officially, according to the rules of airlines, it is not allowed to summarize the established standards by weight and size if passengers want to carry one heavy bag instead of two light ones. And although you obviously shouldn’t hope for such a trick, in practice, an overweight charge of 32 kg may not be charged: everything is individual and depends on strict observance of the rules, whims of airline employees (for example, families with a single suitcase really do meet at times and they forgive small excesses of the norm), as well as from the work of the loaders' union, which does not allow lifting heavy loads above the norm.

Assigned to each passenger carry-on weight in an airplane, it is also established by the private rules of airlines: someone strictly up to 5 kg, and someone permits 12 kg. In addition to hand luggage (outside the limit), personal items not included in the bag / baggage are included when the passenger, such as a coat, handbag or thin briefcase with documents, a bag with a laptop or camera, an umbrella, necessary orthopedic appliances (crutches, a cane).

The next important point: baggage for tickets of several airlines operating under a code-sharing agreement. It should be borne in mind that the code-share does not guarantee the identity of the baggage norms of these carriers. You will have to study the rules of baggage allowance on the planes of each airline along the route so that you do not have to pay for an excess. Such cases are likely when flying from the United States or Canada, where uniform (and high) baggage and cabin baggage allowances are accepted through Europe.

Finally, special restrictions on baggage can be encountered when buying tickets for promotions and promotional tariffs of regular air carriers, as well as when using bonuses. Often such financially profitable flights involve traveling light: you can take fewer kilograms of things with you than at the standard fare, or even get by with just one thing - only with your hand luggage or only with checked baggage.

Baggage loss at the airport

If the passenger lost their luggage at the airport (was not delivered and never appeared on the tape), then immediately, without leaving the arrival area, contact the Lost and found desk or the baggage tracing service of the airline that made the flight. An official written request is usually required for the return of lost baggage: to get it checked, you need to have a ticket with a baggage coupon and a valid ID. In some airlines, you can track the progress of baggage search according to the drawn up statement online: such a service is available on official websites.

Under Russian law, baggage tracing lasts 21 days, and after this time the passenger has the right to request compensation for lost baggage.

According to the international agreements enshrined in the Montreal Convention, the maximum compensation is 1131 SDR (about $ 1,500), but in practice, the amount of payment for each kilogram of lost baggage needs to be checked with the air carrier: on average, foreign companies get about $ 20 per kilogram, for Russian - 600 rubles. According to the internal rules of a number of large international airlines, their compensation may even exceed the generally accepted amount.

The procedure for obvious damage to the baggage or loss of part of its contents is the same, but it is worth remembering the deadlines for submitting applications. For international flights - within 7 days from the date of receipt; For domestic flights, a claim can be made within 6 months. For standard compensation (for each kilogram, as with the loss of a luggage bag), a description of the missing things will be required. If you have kept checks on these things, then it is entirely possible and necessary to count on a partial or full refund. In each case, the airline determines the amount of compensation for damage to baggage during the flight. When transporting fragile and expensive items, it is advisable to insure them and send baggage with declared value, having paid the prescribed fee for this.

Baggage and low-costers

Budget airlines engaged in international passenger transportation have not only extremely low fares, but also often very different from the “average” baggage allowance: with tricks and nuances. By and large, the essence of tariffs for low-cost airlines is in the variety of paid services and in strict restrictions on the free transportation of things (it can concern both luggage and hand luggage). In matters of additional charges for baggage on the plane, low-cost carriers sometimes show a lot of imagination.

Wizz air

Flying with a Hungarian low-cost airline, passengers do not pay extra only for small hand luggage (dimensions - 40 × 30 × 20 cm), the maximum weight is 10 kg, which is located under the front seat.

Each piece of paid checked baggage must fit into the dimensions of 149 × 119 × 171 cm and weigh from 10 to 32 kg. The cost of one piece of baggage is calculated depending on the weight of the baggage and the season. For example, the baggage fee for 10 kg in the low season will be 9-47 euros, and in the high season - 13-57 euros. In total, you can check in 3 pieces of luggage.

Easyjet

The rules for baggage allowance at EasyJet (British low-cost airline) are as follows: only one piece of hand luggage with parameters 56 × 45 × 25 cm (including wheels and handles) is allowed in the cabin. At the same time, a lady’s handbag / case with a laptop / business briefcase is transported as one permitted piece of hand luggage; exceptions are made only for EasyJet Plus cardholders or Flexi ticket holders.

Payment of checked baggage is carried out by the passenger when buying a ticket. Norms (for a unit of paid baggage): up to 15 kg (available subject to payment via the Internet) - $ 10.49 - $ 52.49. The cost of luggage up to 23 kg depends on the time and place of payment: online - $ 14.24 - $ 56.24, at the baggage drop-off counter - $ 54, at the boarding gate - $ 70.

The lowcoster also provided for the transport of heavy luggage within 32 kg. The extra charge for an additional 3 kg is $ 12 and is paid only online. Each item of checked baggage is subject to payment (maximum - 3 pieces of baggage). Excess baggage is paid in the amount of $ 16 per kilogram.

Ryanair

The Irish low-cost airline RyanAir has the most complicated situation with the cost of baggage on the plane: the fee depends on the season (high or low), type of baggage (separately for bicycles, skis, golf clubs and other sports equipment), route and duration of the flight, payment date - when ordering on the official website and when calculating at the airport, the amounts differ markedly.

Bags weighing up to 10 kg are accepted as standard checked baggage (payment - 8 pounds if paid immediately with the purchase of the ticket, and from 10 pounds if added baggage after booking), as well as up to 20 kg (extra charge for weight - 25 pounds online , 40 pounds at the airport). In any case, RyanAir always needs to clarify the exact cost of baggage, as in the tariff grid on the site only a “corridor” of prices is given. Baggage excess - 10 pounds per kilogram.

The norms of hand luggage are simple: it is free to take 1 seat in the cabin up to 10 kg and dimensions up to 55 × 20 × 40 cm, as well as take a handbag up to 40 × 20 × 25 cm in size.

Flyubai

The free baggage allowance in economy class: 1 unit of hand luggage up to 7 kg and dimensions up to 55 × 38 × 20 cm, as well as one lady’s bag / men's briefcase / laptop / bag from Duty Free with dimensions 25 × 33 × 20 cm. General carry-on baggage weight is limited to 10 kg. The limits for business class are as follows: 2 pieces of hand luggage, for each - the same dimensions and weight up to 14 kg.

When traveling with children, 10 kg of baggage and an additional 5 kg of hand luggage with dimensions 55 × 38 × 20 cm are allowed.

Checked baggage in economy class - only paid (pay in advance): standard - 20 kg; clearance of 30 or 40 kg - subject to availability (to be specified).

Paid baggage in economy class (paid in advance): checked baggage up to 20 kg; the possibility of carrying excess baggage (weighing up to 40 kg) must be obtained in advance from the carrier. It is allowed to check in up to 3 pieces of luggage (within the paid weight); the weight limit for one piece of baggage is 32 kg, and the size is 75 × 55 × 35 cm. The cost of baggage depends on which or to which zone (each zone has its own set of directions) you fly. Prices start at 12 dirhams.

Norwegian

Norwegian's free luggage is not available at the most affordable LowFare fare. According to the LowFare + conditions, the ticket price includes 1 seat of 20 kg, while Flex includes 2 seats of 20 kg each. Tolerances on dimensions are high: 250 × 79 × 112 cm. The passenger can pay extra and check in baggage with a maximum weight of 64 kg (these are two seats, up to 32 kg each). The amount of surcharges depends on the season.

One free carry-on baggage is available in all Norwegian fares. In LowFare, Lowfare +, Premium the limit is 10 kg, the norm for Flex, PremiumFlex is 15 kg. The excess is paid based on the excess of baggage allowance of more than 20 kg - 11 pounds per kilogram.

Victory

The domestic “Victory” has very strict baggage allowance and hand luggage. Only hand luggage with dimensions of 36 × 30 × 27 cm can be carried free of charge without weight restrictions. If the hand luggage does not pass through the dimensions, then you will have to pay a fee. Attention: you will have to pay even for a package from Duty Free, if its size is beyond the specified. In these restrictions on the size of hand luggage (at the check-in desks are calibrators) all things should fit with the passenger. In addition to hand luggage, you can take outer clothing, an umbrella, and a raincoat for free into the cabin; for a small child, carry a cot and baby food on the go.

All checked baggage - paid:

  • up to 10 kg - 499-999 rubles when paying online, from 777 rubles. through the call center, 1000 rubles at the baggage claim, 3000 rubles at the boarding gate.
  • up to 20 kg - 999-2499 rubles when paying online, from 1899 through a call center, 3000 at the airport.
  • for 1 kg of excess - 500 rubles.

The dimensions of checked baggage at Pobeda are up to 203 cm in the sum of three dimensions.

Flight by plane is a very quick and convenient way to get to the right place in a short period of time. But for air travel to be safe and comfortable, air carriers have developed a number of rules that must be strictly followed.

The basic rules for baggage on the plane are common to all airlines. In addition, there are individual baggage conditions on airlines. They depend on the country of arrival and on the class of boarding ticket. In order not to cause unpleasant surprises during check-in, a person must know in advance how much baggage can be carried on an airplane.

On November 5, 2017, the order of the Ministry of Transport of Russia regarding the transportation of baggage on airlines in the new edition came into force. It defines the concept (weight limit) and piece concept (the quantitative limit of baggage allowance). There are three types of baggage tariffs: non-refundable without the norm of free baggage and with the norm of baggage, and also return with the norm of baggage.

Terminal

On a note!In civil aviation, free or paid transportation of things is determined by their dimensions (size and weight), as well as the range of the aircraft and the cabin class. The ticket price includes baggage determined by the generally accepted system for determining the weight limit. They are referred to as weight.

Freight rate

As for weight indicators, the new regulation defines the list of baggage with allowable weight in the cabin, as well as in its cargo compartment. Restrictions are introduced in connection with the specifics of air movement of people. Technical characteristics of aircraft, compared with trains, provide for a smaller amount of cargo carried.

The new regulation establishes the maximum weight of free hand luggage per passenger with non-refundable tickets at the level of 5 kg. Some carriers, for the sake of competitive advantage, may increase this figure. And on some aviation lines, restrictions have been tightened. So Aeroflot in 2018 adjusted the rules for baggage transportation. What weight of baggage is allowed on the plane of the leading airlines of Russia?

For free on board Aeroflot in hand luggage you can take:

  • One place, the size of which is 55x40x25 centimeters and weighing 10 kilograms in economy and comfort classes and 15 kilograms in business class.
  • A backpack weighing 5 kilograms and 80 centimeters in the sum of 3 measurements, a lady’s bag or briefcase.
  • Duty-free bag, outerwear, a suit in a case, a folding baby stroller or wheelchair for the disabled, medications, etc.

Important! According to the rules of air transportation, if baggage weighs more than 20 kg, passengers with return tickets have the right to carry 10 to 30 kg of baggage with them without additional charges.

According to this system, the following indicators are provided for adults and children no younger than 2 years old:

  • 1st class - permissible weight of 40 kg.
  • Business class - 30 kg.
  • Economy class - 20 kg.

According to the rules of air transportation, if the bag-in weight is more than 20 kg, the passenger will be obliged to pay extra for it if the flight is made at the economy rate.

Baggage in the cabin

Note!Each child up to 2 years old without a separate seat has a norm for free baggage allowance of 10 kg.

In many international airlines, you can take personal belongings as part of your hand luggage (oversized handbag, laptop or camera, packed in a case). In addition, carriers may allow the transport of an umbrella, outerwear and duty-free bags.

Local fare

Most airlines have adopted a piece-by-piece baggage system. The piece system is differentiated depending on the class of service and / or type of tariff applied. It can be a suitcase, a backpack, a bag or a regular bag - it is important that the hand luggage is fully consistent with the size of 55x40x25 cm.

Below are the data on baggage allowance on several leading airlines in the economy class:

Airline Dimensions Weight
Aeroflot55 x 40 x 25 cm.10 kg
S7 Airlines (Siberia)55 x 40 x 20 cm.10 kg
UTair55 x 40 x 20 cm.Economy class -10 kg, economy comfort - 2 places of 10 kg
Ural Airlines55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg
"Victory"36 x 30 x 27 cm.No limits
Nordwind55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg
Red wings55 x 40 x 20 cm.Base and Light tariffs - 10 kg, Standard tariff - 5 kg
Turkish Airlines55 x 40 x 23 cm.8 kg
Lufthansa55 x 40 x 23 cm.8 kg
NordStar Airlines55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg
Yamal55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg
Aegean airlines56 x 45 x 25 cm.8 kg

Summarizing the above, we can say that the permissible size of hand luggage for the economy class is 158cm, and for the 1st and business class - 203cm.

Oversized baggage. Kinds. Norms and regulations for carriage

Oversized baggage can be carried in agreement with the carrier. The conditions will be announced to the passenger at the stage of booking a ticket. If oversized cargo is transported in the cabin, then a person will need to purchase a separate boarding pass for it.

Limitation - weight per seat cannot be more than 75 kg. If the weight nevertheless exceeds this border, then so many tickets are bought that their number is a multiple of the ratio of its weight and the allowable transportation rate, loading and unloading operations with baggage during flights of any range and complexity are made at the expense of the airline.

Fragile baggage

To be able to bring fragile luggage safely, it makes sense to take it with you to the cabin. But this question also has its limitations:

  • The dimensions of a box, bag or suitcase should be no more than 55x40x20 centimeters (115 centimeters in the sum of measurements of length, width and height).
  • Many airlines do not accept items with a baggage length of more than 60 centimeters (except for the tube).
  • According to the standards of most air carriers, the weight of the cargo should not be higher than 5-10 kg.

If the luggage is fragile, but bulky (for example, musical instruments), then for it acquire a separate seat.

Important! For fragile baggage, discounts and bonuses from airlines do not apply.

Also, fragile cargo can be delivered to the luggage compartment of the aircraft. By agreement with representatives of the airlines, it will be indicated with a special tag.

List of baggage restrictions and prohibitions

In order to ensure flight safety, baggage rules prohibit the transport of a number of objects and substances in passenger aircraft. These include all types of weapons and their imitation. Stitching and cutting objects (knives, knitting needles, scissors, etc.). Explosive substances (gasoline, gunpowder, aerosols). Alcohol, strength more than 24%.

Also, small-sized personal vehicles are prohibited unless they have a lithium battery pulled out. Limited transportation of many medications, etc.

To avoid troubles during the pre-flight inspection, you must familiarize yourself with the full list of restrictions and prohibitions when carrying luggage. These data can be viewed on the websites of any airline.

Prohibited

New baggage rules. Actual information

The new rules for baggage on the plane, which entered into force on November 5, 2017, combined the requirements of all Russian carriers, except for the Pobeda low-cost airline. This is the first airline that provides services at low prices.

For example, on some airlines it was previously possible to take up to 32 kg of baggage on a long-haul flight, but after the decree, only 30 kg per seat. 1 piece of luggage is one suitcase, or one bag or one backpack. There was an increase in the norm of hand luggage up to 10 kg.

And according to the norms of the cargo size, no changes have occurred. They are determined individually by the carrier.

Details of all changes can be found on the website of the airline of interest.

Air baggage will safely get to the point of arrival, if you follow some tips from experienced travelers:

  • In order to exclude damage to your cargo during transportation and not create problems with the transportation of neighboring luggage, you need to make sure that your bags and suitcases are in good working order. They should be tightly closed, not have gaps and cuts. You can optionally pack in cellophane. Such an inexpensive service exists in almost every airport.
  • If the weight of your luggage or hand luggage exceeds the individual carrier’s individual standards, you will have to pay extra for extra pounds.
  • You can put things in the bag on either side, but if the wheels or the handle stick out, you will have to hand in your luggage (if the norm is exceeded, you need to pay extra). The check is carried out at the registration desk, before passport control and before boarding the gate.
  • You can add a laptop or other dimensional gadgets to the main free carry-on baggage if you put them in a backpack (up to 80 cm in size), a briefcase or a woman’s handbag.
  • For the transport of liquids (gels, aerosols, shampoos), a capacity of not more than 100 ml is suitable. Other containers will not be allowed to board. All containers up to 100 ml should be packaged in a transparent, resealable bag measuring 20x20 cm. Norm - one bag per passenger. It should not be hidden deeply, as you will have to show it at the airport.
  • It is important to know in which country the transportation of certain items on board an aircraft is unacceptable. For example, in some Islamic states the transport of religious attributes is strictly prohibited.

Loading

Baggage on the plane is subject to the new rules, which are prescribed to ensure greater safety, especially for the passengers themselves. Therefore, it is worth understanding some restrictions. Information services of air carriers will give comprehensive information about what is possible and what is forbidden to take with you on a flight.

The information provided is only general rules for the carriage of baggage and important tips for our passengers. Each airline independently and individually determines the standard quantitative aspect and weight of the luggage allowed on this route. Therefore, in order to obtain specific information, each passenger must familiarize themselves with the transportation of a particular carrier.

Checked baggage is carried in the luggage compartment of the aircraft. Passengers transfer it at check-in. Such cargo must be properly packed and closed, and its contents securely protected from damage under the pressure of other suitcases. It must also comply with the restrictions that are imposed by individual carriers.

A luggage tag is issued for each suitcase and bag, the other end of which is given to the passenger. It is the basis for identifying baggage upon arrival and complaints in case of damage or loss. From this moment, the responsibility for it lies with the carrier.

Freight rates

There are no internationally established rules regarding mass luggage. Baggage allowance on the plane varies depending on the company whose services the passenger uses. However, all airlines have their own franchise system - the weight and amount of baggage that can be carried in the hold of the aircraft.

This rule states that on flights operated by several airlines, the baggage rules of the airline that travels the geographically longest and largest section of the route apply.

Dimensions

The amount of luggage depends on the type, booking class and route:

By Masashi Yanagiya Flickr
  • 150 cm - the maximum baggage size for most airlines, calculated on the basis of the sum of three values;
  • 20-32 kg - this weight range for low cost airlines;
  • 1-4 - the allowed number of suitcases.

For security reasons, checked baggage is subject to certain restrictions.

  • Companies that operate regular flights.

Allowed free baggage allowance depends on the reserved class of service and passenger status:

  1. Economy class - 1 baggage up to 23 kg.
  2. Economy premium class - 2 suitcases, each 23 kg.
  3. Business class - 2 luggage, each up to 32 kg.
  4. First class - 3 luggage, each up to 32 kg.
  • The franchise of airlines making charter flights is about 15 kg.

Some companies charge weight luggage, including a deductible. Therefore, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is necessary to clarify the permitted weight and fees for exceeding the dimensions of baggage. There are also loyalty cards in international airlines that allow you to carry things free of charge more than allowed, regardless of class of service.

Some limitations

It is forbidden to share weight restrictions. For example, if two passengers are flying, who can carry luggage of 15 kg each, in such a situation you cannot take one luggage weighing 20, and the other - 10 kg. It is not allowed to combine weight restrictions - for two people of 15 kg you can not take a suitcase weighing 30 kg.

Many companies turn a blind eye to a common suitcase exceeding the weight limit for 1 person and rarely resent it, but you should be careful and better take an extra bag to transfer part of the cargo into it if problems start and requests to pay for an excess.

Suitcases for children

Baggage for babies is not allowed. If the child travels without a separate seat for less than two years, you can register for him:

  • baggage weighing less than 12 kg and dimensions not exceeding 55x35x25 cm;
  • checked packages up to 10 kg (for children's tickets).

Children between the ages of two years and older use the same standards as adults.

Children's vehicles (baskets for sleeping, strollers, car seats) can be taken on board as hand luggage, subject to free space. Different conditions apply to different types and types of devices:

  • the stroller should not exceed the size of 15x30x100 cm;
  • folding equipment that replaces carry-on baggage must not exceed dimensions 55x35x25cm.

Otherwise, things are packed and checked in as checked baggage. Any transport must be packed in a case that completely hides it.

What can I take in the hold of the plane

Food

As for the transportation of food products in the hold, they can be transported well packed, in inextricable bags to prevent possible disasters (perishable and fragile goods are transported at the passenger's own risk).

Products of animal origin (meat, milk) may contain pathogens that are responsible for the transmission of infectious diseases, so their transportation must comply with the laws of the countries where they are imported.

Alcohol

At the entrance to Russia, one passenger can carry a total of 5 liters of alcohol with a strength of less than 700C. If the norm is exceeded, it is mandatory to have a receipt for its purchase, declare the goods and pay taxes.

On all domestic flights of the country, adult passengers without restrictions carry drinks with a strength of up to 240C. In some countries, the import-call of alcoholic beverages has its own rules, which can be changed and adjusted.

Electronic devices and elements

In the checked baggage you can carry any electronic devices, including a mobile phone, laptop computer, tablet devices, MP3 player, hair dryer, hair straightener, camera, electric shaver.

Oversized dimensions

Baggage exceeding 158 cm is considered to be large, so it can be carried at an additional cost. However, in any case, its weight should not exceed 32 kg. If the luggage exceeds 300 cm and weighs more than 32 kg, it should be registered as freight transportation.

Special cargo

The luggage, which, due to size or content, falls outside the norm, is called special. It can be sports equipment, musical instruments or animals. Some airlines, under certain conditions, allow you to take special baggage as hand luggage in the cabin.

Musical instruments

Many carriers are allowed to transport delicate musical instruments in the cabin, for example, guitars, which should be packed in a soft case. All other instruments that exceed the permissible size, but not more than the cello, must be carried in the hold of the aircraft.

Animals

By Sam Howzit Flickr

Large animals must be kept in special air-conditioned areas of the cargo hold. Their transportation is carried out in a closed container of sufficient volumes for a particular pet, in which it is necessary to provide access to drinking water. Carriage charges apply.

Sports equipment

Luggage that is associated with sports is called sports. It can be skiing, diving equipment, a bicycle. Usually such a cargo is very large and heavy, and most often transported in the cargo area of \u200b\u200bthe aircraft. However, smaller items, such as a skateboard, are not allowed as carry-on baggage, as they can be used as percussion weapons.

For sports equipment that requires special packaging, additional fees apply. Transportation of sporting and hunting weapons must be recorded. Ammunition should be carried separately from the weapon, accompanied by appropriate permits.

Adjustable quantity of goods:

  1. Perfumes and aerosols should not exceed 2 kg or 2 liters per person and 0.5 kg or 0.5 liters apiece.
  2. Weapons - you can carry knives, ammunition less than 19.1 mm caliber, ammunition for hunting or sports and firearms up to 5 kg, subject to the requirements of the police and the laws of the country of destination. They need to be transported in one bag, but pack all the parts separately. Weapons must not be placed among the personal belongings of a passenger.
  3. Cartridges - provided that they are packed in a hard case. It should be stored in its original packaging, and the entire space should be filled with cushioning material to prevent slipping.

Prohibited Baggage and Carriage Restrictions

Items that are forbidden to be carried in the hold of an airplane:

  • explosive and incendiary substances, including mines, grenades, fireworks and other pyrotechnics, smoke-forming cans, dynamite, gunpowder;
  • toxic, combustible, corrosive substances - gasoline, gas burners, lighter fluids, cooking fuel, flammable paints, solvents, aerosols (except for personal hygiene items);
  • infectious substances - bacterial cultures, viral organisms, medical laboratory samples;
  • oxidizing agents and organic peroxides;
  • poisons - pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, arsenic, cyanides and others;
  • magnetic materials - strong magnets;
  • marijuana (hemp) in any form;
  • organic substances - fiberglass, resins;
  • radioactive materials.

Items prohibited in hand luggage and allowed for transportation in the hold as a registered baggage:

  • sporting goods, including baseball bats, softball and cricket tools, hockey sticks, ski poles, cues, bows and arrows;
  • knives - any length;
  • cutting tools - carpet knives and cutters, any devices with a hinged or retractable blade, metal scissors with sharp ends;
  • firearms - pistols, guns, rifles, parts;
  • paintball equipment;
  • tools - drills, saws, portable chain saws, screwdrivers, hammers, pliers;
  • dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) up to 1.5 kg.

Some baggage packing rules

To ensure that the suitcase does not get stuck on the conveyor belt, make sure that all loose belts are connected or removed, all latches are securely fastened, and retractable handles are removed.

Golden rules

  1. Always watch your things. Never leave your luggage unattended, even for a short time. Otherwise, it will be monitored by the police and may ultimately be destroyed.
  2. Do not take baggage from third parties - never agree to look after bags or bags from people unknown to you, regardless of motives and reasons.
  3. Clearly indicate your name and address on the inside and outside of the luggage.
  4. Jewelry, small electronics, money, keys, medicines, documents and other valuables are best taken in hand luggage.
  5. All delicate and fragile items must be wrapped with a soft cloth or paper.
  6. Remove all tags from your suitcases from previous trips. In some cases, this may result in items being shipped to another airport.
  7. To avoid a mistake upon arrival, mark your suitcase with a characteristic sign - a ribbon, a sticker and more.
  8. Never carry objects of unauthorized persons on board the aircraft.

Aeroflot 2016: how much can I check in?

All baggage of passengers at the airport is divided into two categories:

  • carry-on baggage;
  • checked baggage.

You carry carry-on baggage with you to the passenger compartment, and hand over the heaviest and largest suitcases to your checked baggage. Airport employees will give you a tag in advance, and you will need to mark your suitcase so that it does not get lost during transportation. He will also fly with you, but in a separate cargo compartment.

In the form of hand luggage, you can take only one bag, and its weight should not exceed 10 kg. The exception is passengers who fly in business class. They can load a bag up to 15 kg.

The weight rates of your suitcase also depend on the class you fly. In the business class, you can carry 2 seats, each no more than 32 kg. Comfort and premium economy class tickets allow you to take 2 seats with you, but each of these bags should weigh 23 kg or less. If you paid at the very budget rate, which is called the economy, then you can take only one suitcase weighing no more than 23 kg. If your cargo is not more than 1 kg, Aeroflot does not limit the number of seats.

There are several tricks to cargo handling that you can apply in order not to overpay for extra pounds.

  • If you are traveling as a family or a large company, then someone can arrange an extra suitcase of a friend for themselves. If you have a little baggage, then arrange with a friend to take part of his bags. Aeroflot allows you to summarize the number of seats per company, but you cannot summarize the weight or dimensions of baggage. That is, if the husband and wife travel together with the coffee maker class, and their suitcase weighs 25 kg, then at the airport they will have to pay for excess weight.
  • Aeroflot is sympathetic to young parents. Often the smallest member of the family has the largest suitcase, because there you need to fit diapers, a lot of replaceable clothes, and all your favorite toys. If a baby up to two years old flies with you, then he is supposed to have a separate luggage space, although he does not occupy seats on the plane. Children's suitcase should not be heavier than 10 kg. Moreover, its length, height and width in total cannot exceed 115 cm. The class of the ticket for the parents does not play a role here.
  • Children from 2 to 12 years old also have the right to a separate baggage claim. They can carry as much as adults on their ticket.

Attention! If your flight involves a transfer, check to see if both planes are owned by Aeroflot. Another carrier may have other restrictions. Please note that you do not have to “thin out” your luggage at the transfer airport or pay extra money for an excess.

Ural Airlines: Traveling Light

Ural Airlines has a special fare that prohibits the transport of any cargo as checked baggage. The passenger has the right to take with him only one small bag in hand luggage. This, of course, greatly hampers travelers who are accustomed to flying in comfort. But the promo tariff is the cheapest.

The rest of the rules for the transportation of goods at Ural Airlines are similar to those adopted by Aeroflot. The sum of the sides of your suitcase should not be more than 203 cm. Individually, these dimensions cannot be more than 50x50x100 cm.

When flying with a business or comfort fare ticket, you can carry up to two suitcases with you, each of which will weigh 32 kg (less).

Tip. If the purpose of your trip is a short trip, you can redeem tickets of the same class, but marked “light”. In this case, you can only take one suitcase of the same weight. For a short trip this will be enough.

Rates of the economy group (including premium economy) allow passengers to carry only one suitcase, and its weight should not exceed 23 kg.

Children who fly with their parents and do not have a separate seat can also take their luggage. 10 kg of cargo can be handed over to the luggage compartment in one place. Or you can carry this bag with you in your hand luggage.

It is worth remembering that no matter what ticket you buy, you can not take the following things as a free load:

  • disassembled auto and motorcycle vehicles (especially - the whole), boats;
  • musical instruments;
  • flowers (living can not, but in the form of a bouquet - you can), seedlings.

All these items need to be issued separate documents.

So, the key carriers have almost the same weight standards. They are close to international. The exception is the cheapest tickets, which prohibit taking anything with you except for hand luggage.

Rules of baggage on the plane: video

Just talking about it is simply pointless. On a family trip, you can’t do without suitcases and bulk bags, prams and other things that a small passenger needs, most of which are sent to fly in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

And so that everything goes smoothly at the airport, it is important to know in advance how many things can be transported for free, what are the allowed dimensions and weight of the luggage for the ticket purchased at the chosen airline, how to arrange the transportation of your belongings correctly, how to transport non-standard large items, how to act in some emergency situations for example, if you suddenly lost your luggage or found that there are too many things in the luggage. And today is just about that.

General baggage rules

Air carriers around the world are extremely concerned about flight safety. And for this, strict standards and rules of transportation are developed. Among the priority norms is the calculation of the maximum weight of baggage per passenger. Because overweight on board is a direct threat to passenger safety.

All things with which the passenger goes on a flight can be called one word “baggage”, which is conditionally divided into:

  • checked baggage - bags, suitcases, boxes and other items with which the passenger parted at the airport check-in, having delegated the care of them to his employees;
  • hand luggage - bags, bags and suitcases that will be with him until the end of the flight. Previously, a special tag was attached to them. Under the new rules, no;
  • personal items that are transported free of charge in excess of the established one (for a complete list, see paragraph 135 of the Russian Aviation Regulations (FAP)).

Air transportation around the world is strictly regulated. All airline carriers and passengers are required to comply with the established Rules. For Russian airlines with regard to the carriage of passengers and baggage, various regulatory documents and air transportation rules are applied, which were amended in accordance with Law No. 409 of October 5, 2017.

According to the law on non-refundable tickets, not only certain baggage and baggage allowances have changed, but Russian airlines have the opportunity to offer passengers cheaper tickets without baggage, that is, without free baggage allowance, independently determining for which fare baggage should be provided.

However, for passengers with tickets, the price of which includes baggage, a single standard for free baggage is introduced. This norm cannot be reduced. And if the carrier wants to show generosity and increase the allowed limit upwards - please. It is not forbidden.

Each carrier has the right to change and set its own standards, without going beyond the established general rules and without worsening the conditions for passenger service. The limit value can be different (this depends on the carrier’s rules, type of aircraft, duration and direction of flight, ticket price and class of service), but its maximum weight is limited to no more than 30 kg (it used to be 32 kg) for one seat. Foreign airlines have their own rules that comply with the laws of their countries.

Each specific situation has its own nuances. In order not to be mistaken, be sure to check the weight and size of your free baggage, the parameters of which are indicated for a specific fare on the ticket. This information can also be found on the carrier’s website.

How much do you have to pay for the advantage?

Sometimes it happens that at the check-in counter at the airport it suddenly turns out that the suitcase weighs more than what is indicated on the purchased ticket, and the free baggage allowance is exceeded in some way: by weight, size or number of seats (depending on company rules). There is nothing to be done, in most cases you will have to pay extra for an advantage.

The amounts of surcharges are different: from 2500 to 7500 rubles on domestic flights and up to 200 euros - on international flights. The amount depends on the carrier’s policy (some of them turn a blind eye to a small overload of 1-2 kg, while others may bill in full) and on how large the advantage is.

Most often, the following restrictions are encountered in airlines:

  • for economy class - 1 free seat (suitcase / bag) not more than 20-23 kg;
  • for business class - 2 luggage places (each no more than 30-32 kg);
  • by the sum of three measurements (length, width, height), baggage should not be more than 158 cm (or 203 cm).

Sometimes it’s more profitable to fly on an expensive ticket with heavy luggage than in an economy class with an extra charge for an advantage.

Within the maximum permitted limit (at international airports - this is 1 piece of baggage not more than 32 kg, according to Russian rules - not more than 30 kg) it is allowed to carry baggage in excess of the free norm. In this case, the carrier will have to pay extra for excess baggage (that is, for baggage that is not included in the price of the purchased ticket) and coordinate the transportation of such baggage with it.

As for low-cost airlines, they often do not have free luggage. For example, in Russia, all baggage at a standard non-refundable rate is paid, and its cost depends on the weight and number of seats. It is allowed to take any safe objects (regardless of their weight and any lists) that can be squeezed through the measuring frame with dimensions 36 x 30 x 27 cm into the cabin.

How to carry oversized and heavy baggage?

Heavy baggage - according to Russian rules, this is all that exceeds the weight of one piece in 30 kg.

Oversized baggage is an excess of the baggage allowance in terms of dimensions, that is, 1 seat more than 203 cm (or 158 cm, as in most airlines). When specifying the size of a suitcase (bag) in a packaged form, the wheels, handles, and pockets are taken into account.

For excess weight, as well as for exceeding the dimensions, you will have to pay.

Depending on the maximum weight limit established in a particular company (in the order of the Ministry of Transport, the maximum weight of baggage allowed for baggage is 50 kg) and in size (excess in the amount of 270-320 cm), such heavy and large baggage may not be accepted for transportation even for money.

What, then, should a passenger do? Such items can be sent (of course, having agreed this with the carrier) along the route as unaccompanied cargo, which is accepted at the cargo terminal in the cargo service of the company. You can collect your luggage at the airport of arrival using the bill of lading received at check-in.

What to do if you have non-standard baggage?

Most often, these are bulky, unusual and heavy things: musical instruments, snowboards and surfboards, skis, household appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, televisions, vacuum cleaners) and more. To carry such baggage, airlines prescribe special conditions, indicating the maximum size, weight and contents of one set of baggage, which it is advisable to familiarize yourself with in advance.

Non-standard baggage (most often sports equipment) can be transported free of charge as an addition to the rest of the baggage or as ordinary baggage within the normal range according to the ticket fare or surcharge. It is possible to apply special conditions, such as, for example, the absence of restrictions on the dimensions that apply to ordinary baggage. For some types of such non-standard baggage, a fixed payment is established.

The items listed in paragraph 136 of the Federal Aviation Rules (prams, walkers, wheelchairs and other baggage) are transported free of charge in checked baggage, if it is not possible to place them in the cabin without violating comfortable and safe conditions for passengers.

Lucky for those who travel with skiing and snowboarding. Many carriers (for example, Aeroflot from November 1 to May 15) allow passengers to carry ski equipment and snowboards free of charge in addition to the main baggage or at no extra charge, if they fit in the free baggage allowance (often without size limit).

But, again, you need to double-check everything for reliability. For example, in low-cost airlines and low-cost airlines, often there is no option for free transportation of sports equipment. And in some, the permissible weight (usually 20-23 kg) can be reduced to 10 kg.

In some areas (usually during long flights) sometimes there are own rules that allow you to transport sets of equipment of a certain weight for surfing and diving at certain periods without surcharge.

Golf bags, hockey sticks, fishing rods, musical instruments can also be transported for free if the established norms are not violated. But if the weight, size, number of seats exceed the free norm, then all of the above will go on a flight only with an extra charge.

The passenger is obliged to discuss the transportation of such cargo with the carrier company in advance (36 hours before departure). Because it may happen that the airline has no conditions for the transportation of such non-standard baggage (the size of the cargo does not correspond to the type of aircraft or baggage of this size simply cannot be placed on board). Without prior agreement, you may simply not accept it due to lack of free space.

If it turns out that it is not possible to organize transportation of non-standard and heavy baggage, then it may be possible to send it as ordinary baggage with payment for excess of the free norm.

Fragile baggage

Very often, airliner passengers have questions about what to do with fragile and fragile things. It is safest (if possible) to carry such baggage in the cabin, checking it out as hand luggage. If this is not possible, baggage is checked in at the check-in with the announcement that it requires especially careful transportation. If such an option is provided in this airline, a special sticker is glued to the cargo and things are delivered on board manually, and not in the total mass of suitcases on the tape.

Experienced travelers, often flying with non-standard baggage, argue that, although there are many different nuances, if you carefully follow the rules of the carrier, everything usually goes as usual.

Tip: when transporting expensive and fragile items, it is advisable to insure your luggage and send it with declared value (you will have to pay for this service).

And, of course, there is a list of items that will not be allowed in baggage under any pretext for security reasons.

What is prohibited for transportation on an airplane?

In most airlines you can not carry:

  • everything that easily ignites and explodes (including firecrackers, sparklers, firecrackers, gunpowder, cartridges, matches, gasoline and gas lighters, solvents, paints, gasoline, acetone, ethyl alcohol and others);
  • gases of various types (liquefied, toxic, compressed, including cans for burners and refills for lighters);
  • radioactive, toxic, easily oxidized and corrosive substances (all kinds of acids, alkalis, mercury and devices containing it);
  • rechargeable (lithium-ion) batteries with a capacity of more than 160 Wh (if the power of the devices is from 100 to 160 Wh, it is allowed to transport them inside the equipment with the permission of the airline, up to 100 Wh in laptops, phones, inside equipment, while spare batteries can only be transported in hand luggage);
  • any sharp, heavy, cutting objects that could be potentially dangerous to others;
  • firearms, cold weapons, stun guns without special permits;
  • electronic cigarettes, magnetized items.

This list is quite large. It is set out in Appendix 1 to the Rules for conducting pre-flight and after-flight searches No. 104 of 07.25.2007.

Is checked baggage for children?

For young travelers from 2 to 12 years old, the same baggage allowance applies as for adult passengers. For babies (up to two years) without a separate seat, free baggage is allowed weighing up to 10 kg and not more than 115 cm in the sum of measurements.

Can luggage be combined?

The new rules retain the ability to combine things into one baggage at the request of passengers traveling together (two or more) under certain conditions. Moreover, one piece of such combined baggage according to Russian rules cannot be heavier than 30 kg and exceed 203 cm in size.

Traveling families with one suitcase sometimes meet and forgive them a slight advantage. But still, in practice, much depends on the pickiness of employees. In each case, this is decided individually.

Instead of two light bags, it is not always possible to carry one heavy one when traveling abroad: European unions take care of their movers and prohibit excess baggage from being lifted.

Naturally, there are exceptions for bulky baggage that cannot be divided (musical instruments, equipment and equipment for sports, etc.).

What to do if baggage is lost?

You landed, but your things did not appear on the tape? Do not panic. But some actions need to be taken immediately, without leaving the arrivals area. Find employees of the airline’s airline operating the flight who are looking for lost baggage, and presenting them with a ticket, baggage ticket, passport, issue an official written request.

The search for missing baggage under Russian laws can last 21 days (how such a search occurs, in some airlines you can track on the website using the online service). When the missing baggage is found, the carrier must deliver it to the address indicated by the passenger free of charge.

If after three weeks the luggage was not found or was found, but partially or completely damaged, you can apply for compensation to the airline.

International rules set the maximum amount of compensation payments in case of loss of baggage or its partial damage. In fact, in each specific situation, the amount of compensation is determined by the airline and depends on its internal rules. In case of refusal to compensate for the damage caused, one should go to court.

How to pay less for luggage?

Universal advice for this case - do not take too much. Sometimes even a slight advantage can cause big problems. Especially if this is a trip abroad or you have to use the services of several airlines.

Here you can not do without studying the rules that apply to different carriers along the route. Otherwise, even with an advantage of 1-2 kg, you will have to pay extra. And not only this. European movers, whom their trade unions forbid to lift baggage heavier than 32 kg, may simply refuse to deliver such cargo.

Be especially careful when purchasing low-cost tickets at low cost airlines or at a baggage-free fare. Often, such tickets, in which case it will not be possible to return, and you will have to fly light.

Baggage restrictions may occur when buying tickets for promotional tariffs and promotions, when using bonuses. Such flights, at first glance, are financially profitable, sometimes they imply lower baggage allowance than with the standard fare, or even offer to get by with a choice of either checked baggage or hand luggage.

There is only one way out - try to take things a little less and leave at least some weight supply up to the norm established by the carrier, which you must familiarize yourself with in advance, and consider this when packing luggage at home. To do this, having weighed your weight with luggage and without luggage on a household floor scales, it is easy to make simple calculations and get rid of all that is unnecessary and repack the suitcase without hassle and fuss.

Experienced travelers are advised to wear the heaviest shoes and plenty of clothes before flying, small heavy items can be carried in pockets. Do not take large amounts of care products and cosmetics (sometimes the cost of buying them on the spot is much less than what you have to spend to pay the odds).

And there are a lot of such lifehacks. Another of them is the ability to pack a suitcase correctly. You can read about what you need to do to get everything you need and save on luggage in this article.
