The cascade fountain is especially beautiful in the evening. It is illuminated and shimmers with all the colors of the rainbow.

Do you like to listen to the sound of the sea while walking along the promenade? Embankment of the Mahadjirs is a beautiful embankment of the capital of Abkhazia and the most picturesque place in Sukhum. Sitting on a bench under the shade of flowering exotic plants, it is pleasant to observe the state of the water surface and the yacht, which is rocking on the waves like in a cradle. Peace settles in the soul. Where the Embankment of the Makhajirs begins right at the Black Sea coast, gigantic eucalyptus trees grow, shedding their bark. In the evening, the center of Sukhum is illuminated by an extravaganza of light and colors that artists leave in the paintings as Faces of the capital of Abkhazia.

Leona Avenue appears at the Ritsa Hotel. Here are the Philharmonic (1914) and the State Russian Drama Theater (performances for children).

Sukhumi- the capital of the Republic of Abkhazia. Republics whose state and territorial independence are still disputed by some states. What does it represent rest in Sukhumi- a dubious adventure or a good rest on the Black Sea? Let's figure it out together.

Geographic location of Sukhumi in Abkhazia

Republic Abkhazia located on the southern slope of the Caucasus Range, in its northwestern part. The western borders of the country are washed by the Black Sea. The international legal status of Abkhazia is a "partially recognized state". The European Commission and the United States regard Abkhazia as a territory of Georgia occupied by Russia.

Abkhazia is a small country, it has 105 small settlements and only 8 cities. And one of them - the capital of the republic - Sukhum(or, more familiar to the Russian ear - Sukhumi).

Sukhumi is a city built on the site of the ancient colony of Dioscuriades (founded in the 6th century BC). It received the status of a city in the middle of the 19th century. It is located on the Black Sea coast (shore of the Sukhumi Bay) in the central part of the country, a hundred kilometers from the Russian border. The city is cut by the Besletka (Basly) and Khakipsy (Sukhumka) rivers. The southern part of the capital of Abkhazia is surrounded by the Kyalasur River. About 65 thousand people live in Sukhumi.

Climate and nature of Sukhumi

Rest in Sukhumi is the time spent in a favorable climate. The air of Sukhumi is ionized and enriched with air ions, which have a good effect on people with vascular and heart diseases. If the climate of the Georgian Black Sea region is often compared with the climate of the Mediterranean, then the weather in Sukhumi is much better than on the Riviera. January in Sukhumi is warmer than January in Genoa or Nagasaki, although according to climate data they are analogues the capitals of Abkhazia. Sukhumi is warmer than Batumi, Sochi or the Crimean resorts. Strong wind in Sukhumi is a rare occurrence. In the cold season, mountain air masses bring warmth and create a feeling of summer. Abundant sea breezes well "condition" hot July days and reduce humidity. The average air temperature in mid-summer is +26°C. By the end of summer, the water warms up to +25°C. The swimming season starts in May and lasts until the last week of October. During the year, 1700 mm of precipitation falls.

The appearance of the city is exotic plants, several gardens, squares, parks, a botanical garden and the famous embankment, peering into the Black Sea blue with rows of palm trees and eucalyptus trees. Roses, arborvitae, Himalayan cedars and feijoa flaunt in the parks of the city. Even in winter in Sukhumi you can see blooming mimosa and acacia. The mild climate made it possible to collect rare subtropical plants in the Sukhumi arboretum. The pride of this park is an alley of elephant palms from South America.

Part of the city with a predominantly private sector is located on Cape Krasny Mayak, and the whole city lies in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges with heights up to 200m. The city is equidistant from both the Russian (107km) and Georgian (100km) borders. The closest "neighbors" are the cities of Gudauta and Gulrypsh. To get to Sukhum from Russia, you can get to Adler in any convenient way, and from there - by commuter train to the Abkhazian capital. In addition, there is a direct long-distance train going to Sukhum from Moscow. There is an airport in the city, but it is not yet operational. In addition, intercity buses run from Krasnodar, Krymsk, Nalchik, Rostov-on-Don and Sochi. If you travel by private car, then you need to follow the M27 federal highway to your destination.

General information, history

Sukhum is the capital of Abkhazia. In addition to the administrative center, the city is also a large resort area. It is one of the largest in the Caucasus, although the population does not exceed 65,000 people. There are no clearly defined districts in the city, but the locals divide it into the Center, New District or Gumista, Mayak, Red Bridge and Sinop. The regions are fundamentally different from each other. The resort area is developed and ennobled, while the rest are quite neglected.

The city has a history of over 2500 years and is one of the oldest in the world. The city got its name in 1724, when a Turkish fortress was built in its place. The etymology has not been unequivocally determined. According to some data, this came from the Turkish “water and sand”, according to others - from the Megrelian “twins”, according to others - from the Svan name of the hornbeam tree. In the USSR, the city was called Sukhumi, and for many Russians this remains a more familiar name than the official one.

Rest in Sukhum is popular due to the local subtropical climate. Mountain ranges protect from the influence of cold atmospheric masses, so the average annual temperature is +17 degrees. In summer, both water and air warm up to +30. There is a lot of exotic vegetation around, although there are enough industrial zones

Beaches

The total length of the beaches of Sukhum is about 20 km. They lie between the channels of the Gumista and Kyalasur rivers. The beaches are mostly covered with pebbles, and their width is quite large. The most popular is the beach in the Sinop area. It, unlike others, is sandy and is best suited for families with children. The most well-equipped beaches are in the Center area, running parallel to the city embankment. Motorists prefer beaches in the suburbs, in riverbeds. Although they are mostly wild, there are very few people on them, and the water is cleaner. For lovers of beach comfort, we can recommend the beach of the military sanatorium. Although the entrance there is paid (about 30 rubles), the conditions there are the best on the entire Sukhumi coast.

Latest reviews about holidays in Sukhum

We rested from June to July 2019. At first we planned to stay here for a week ... then we stayed for another 3)) The rooms are cozy, clean, TV, Internet; the pastels were changed every week; there is a washing machine, the kitchen has good dishes, there is everything for self-cooking. The owner can take you on an excursion (which will be much cheaper than going with a travel agency), cook a barbecue. Elya, Petya, thank you for your attentive attitude and good rest. We'll come again))

If you want to take a break from the bustle of the city and people, then you are definitely here! Quiet place. There are few people and no one interferes with each other. The territory of the hotel is large, there is a playground where children have something to do. The beach is nearby, walk 3 minutes. There are sun loungers on the beach and you can borrow umbrellas from the hotel. The sea is clear even in stormy times. In the cafe you can taste both national and European dishes. The rooms match the description. Tours can be booked at the hotel. The downside for some may be that wi-fi does not always work stably in the hotel, TV broadcasts only three Russian channels, cows roam freely around the village and there is no entertainment in the village itself (you need to go to the city). For us it did not matter, since we went to rest and we really liked it, we did not want to leave. Thanks to the owners and staff for a friendly and positive attitude!

We had a wonderful rest in the city of Sukhum in the guest house "At Eli" (without prepayment). If you like a quiet, sincere rest, then you are here. A beautiful city! Great people, great house! Everything is within walking distance: shops, a large market, 10 minutes walk to the sea at a calm pace. Many thanks to the owner Eli for kindness and great attitude! The price and quality surprised me. The house has clean, comfortable rooms. They have everything you need: a bathroom, TV, air conditioning, internet, fresh linen, snow-white towels. Everything in the house is clean and quiet. There is a wonderful, comfortable summer kitchen with all the utensils. For those who love barbecue there is a grill. We all loved it!!! I would like to say a special thank you to Petya for the wonderful barbecue and fragrant coffee!!! Thanks a lot! We will definitely come here next year!

Every summer we try to go on vacation with our family and have been to many places. Everywhere everything is somehow usual, standard, there are pluses and minuses, so I never wrote reviews. But having visited Svetlana and Harut (I am writing as a guest, because this is the feeling left after their vacation), I simply could not leave it unattended. We were in Abkhazia at the end of June - beginning of July 2019 for the first time. Traveled alone with kids aged 5 and 10. They chose very carefully, looked at a lot, called up, searched. I want to warn you, when you choose housing, ask about everything, up to the availability of dishes, is it possible to fry a barbecue when you return from a walk. The owners are different and everyone has their own rules. We are very lucky, Svetlana and Harut are the most hospitable people. To be honest, I have never seen this anywhere. We were met by car and we drove into a very clean and comfortable room. Even when booking, Svetlana provided us with an extra. photo.
The room was everything as in the description, without exaggeration. Plasma TV, air conditioning, 2 very comfortable, soft beds, covered with good ironed linen, bedside table, wardrobe with hangers and a mirror. In the bathroom for each 2 towels, toiletries, split system. Haven't had a problem with hot water. Clean, well-groomed, large yard (lit in the evening) with flowers, barbecue area. Each room has its own table in the kitchen. Lots of clean utensils, everything is like at home. You can also use the washing machine for free at any time. All this is under supervision, so that the feeling of reliability never left. The house is in a convenient location, with my children, a bag, inflatable circles, I slowly reached the sea for a maximum of 10 minutes. On the way, the hotel has a clean, comfortable, not expensive cafe with air conditioning, where they cook delicious food. The center is not far away, you can walk along the promenade, where there is all the entertainment for children. Trampoline 100 rub. no time limit (parents will understand), there are many cafes on the seashore and stalls and other entertainment nearby. Also not far from the house is the central market, wine, fruits, vegetables at affordable prices, bargain. They offer a large number of excursions, the places here are really very beautiful, but I recommend contacting Svetlana with this question, she will tell you about each one without exaggeration and send it with a reliable, trusted company. Thus, we rode, accompanied by a guide, to look at the beauties of Abkhazia every other day. Unlike private traders, they give complete information about the place where you are going, talk about customs, joke, make sure you get lost, in general, both me and the children really liked it. In general, I advise you to contact the owners of the house on any issue, they will always tell you everything, prompt, very responsive and unobtrusive people. Leaving home, you can ask for a fresh bay leaf, if there is, Svetlana treats. A trifle, but nice. Maybe it will be inappropriate, but I still want to write that the relatives who sometimes came to visit them also made a very good impression. Welcoming, easy and pleasant people in communication. Here we felt at ease, thanks to such hospitality of the owners, we had a great vacation. If you manage to get to Sukhum already with your spouse and children, then only here. Having rested here once, you will understand why. Svetlana and Harut, I wish you all the best, prosperity in your business, remain the same responsive, pleasant, kind people. Thank you for a wonderful stay, we were left with a great and good impression!!!
Sincerely, Oksana, Yaroslav and Mark.

Great place to relax! I recommend to everyone. Fully corresponds to the description. New, clean, comfortable house with all amenities. In the yard there is a brazier, a table, fruit trees. To the sea 1-2 minutes on foot. Cross the road and you are on a beautiful wide beach with crystal clear water. Within walking distance are several shops, a canteen, a restaurant. 5-10 minutes (by public transport stopping near the house) and you are in the city center. We want to say a huge thank you to the owners of the house - Alexander and his mother Nadezhda!!! Wonderful, hospitable, kind, intelligent people who care about making guests feel comfortable and comfortable. A big hello to the charming dogs Malta and Rocky, with whom we became very good friends.
