The height of the mountain towers. Ski resorts Elbrus and Cheget (Elbrus region). Resort Village

Last week I was in Elbrus to test the new Ford Ranger. At the same time we climbed by cable car to the shelter "Bochki", located at an altitude of 3800 meters above sea level.

Meanwhile, Elbrus itself is considered the highest point of Russia and Europe. It has two peaks (this is an extinct volcano) 5621 and 5642 meters high. There are three lines of cable cars to climb to the top, then climbing is possible either on foot or on a snowcat.

  2. The cable car starts at the Azau station, located at an altitude of 2350 meters above sea level. At night there was a heavy downpour, as a result the mudflow came down. This Niva was captured by the elements, but when we went down it was already dug up and she left.

3. The first stage has two lifts. An old pendulum cableway with two cabins with a capacity of 20 people each. And a new gondola-type cableway with detachable cabins (a total of 58) with a capacity of 8 people each. They arrive at the station "Old horizons" (height 3000 meters).

4. The next line of cable cars runs from the station “Old Horizon” (3000 meters) to the station “Mir” (3500 meters). Here is exactly the same traffic pattern with two ropes: the old (pendulum) and the new (gondola type). The cost of the excursion lift on the gondola cable car is 600 rubles, on the pendulum cable car - 300 rubles.

6. If in Mineralnye Vody that day the temperature was +30 ° C, then here, at an altitude of more than 3500 meters, it became cold.

7. Tourists descend to the cable car.

8. The tops of Elbrus are densely covered by clouds. In the foreground you can see numerous snow groomers and snowmobiles, which offer to take a little higher for 1000 rubles. Further, there is "Shelter 11" (height 4130 meters), where in 1938 was built the highest mountain hotel in Russia, which burned down in 1998.

9. The melting glacier.

10. General view of the shelter "Barrels".

11. Disassembled snowcat.

12. The shelter “Bochki” consists of 9 six-seater residential containers, barrels, where tourists undergo acclimatization before climbing to the top of Elbrus. And also pay attention to how the concrete slabs in front of them led.

13. Shop with beer at an altitude of 3800 meters. That's right, what else to do during the period of acclimatization.

14. Since there is no time for acclimatization and ascent to Elbrus, and on the same day we fly to Moscow - we go down.

15. Finally, a picture of an excellent alpine toilet of the toilet type, located at the Mir station (3,500 meters above sea level). And yet, I almost forgot to say - I was extremely surprised by the availability of free Wi-Fi Internet at this height. I won’t even write about the amount of garbage, and so everything is visible ...

On Elbrus, the third line of the cableway was opened on the Mir Station - Garabashi Station section and a new ski slope about two thousand meters long.

The new line from Mir station is located at an altitude of 3455 meters, the highest point of Garabashi's lift is 3847 meters.

Today we are opening the ski season on the highest mountain in Europe - Elbrus, ”said Lev Kuznetsov, Russian Minister for North Caucasus Affairs, at the opening ceremony. - It is significant that we will associate a unique lift with this mountain, which was built this year from the Mir station to the Garabashi station.

The head of the Minkavkaz thanked the builders who for a short time in difficult natural and climatic conditions were able to erect a unique structure and stressed that the implementation of this project will allow our skiers to ride Elbrus for a longer period of time.

Through this project, we also give Russians the opportunity to look more at domestic resorts and understand that they are competitive today, ”said Kuznetsov.

The new cableway on Elbrus has become the highest mountain, unparalleled in Russia and Europe. Prior to this, the highest mountain cable car in Europe was considered to be a lift on top of the Aiguille du Midi in the western part of the Mont Blanc massif, which is connected with the French resort of Chamonix. Here the upper cableway station is located at an altitude of 3842 meters - five meters lower than on Elbrus. In the conditions of construction in the mountains, taking into account the elevation difference, this is a significant difference.

The length of the new cableway is 1675 meters; 12 towers were installed for its operation. During the construction, French equipment was used. The lift is equipped with eight-seater gondolas, its capacity is 750 people per hour, and in the future it will be increased to 1.5 thousand people. The project was implemented by North Caucasus Resorts JSC, the volume of capital investments in construction amounted to over 1 billion rubles.

In Europe, they don’t build higher, and in Europe they don’t ride higher, ”stressed the head of Kabardino-Balkaria, Yuri Kokov. “But we understand that this is only the first step, that the resort’s infrastructure needs to be developed in order to meet international standards.” And we have a real chance to make a truly world-class resort in Russia.

The skiers have been waiting for the opening of the third phase of the World for a long time - after entering the new ski lift, the resort of Elbrus can rightfully be called all-weather, since the snow at these heights lies almost all year round. By the way, 50 meters from the new station is the famous shelter for climbers "Barrels" - these are residential houses in the form of metal cylinders, which were used in the construction of the Baikal-Amur Railway.

Importantly, a new stretch of the cableway is also accessible for people with disabilities - the width of some gondolas allows you to drive into them in a wheelchair. For landing in a gondola, the platform level is combined with the floor level of the gondola at both the lower station and the upper. There are special lifts for access to the landing site from ground level. The level of the combined site of the second and third stage at Mir is combined, and a ramp is installed here.

The opening ceremony of the new ski lift kicked off the ski season. In the glade of Azau for tourists and vacationers were all kinds of promotions and competitions. An instrinter was installed on the photo zone decorated with ski attributes, which printed out photos of tourists who posted their photos on Instagram under the hashtag: #open_kurortelbrus. During the event, they won a prize for a larger number of “likes”.

In addition to the new gondola road, lovers of skiing and snowboarding will find a new track on the Garabashi-Mir section, a wide rollout to the Mir station and another new ski track on the Mir-Krugozor section.

Work was carried out in advance to ensure the safety of the ski slopes - all problem areas along the ski areas from which the stones periodically fell off were reinforced with special nets. There was a large rental of ski equipment, a new sportswear store and a service center.

This year, 123 thousand people visited the Elbrus region from January to March. The upcoming ski season - 2016 may well break this record. As the head of the press service of the administration of the Elbrus region Alisa Tarim said, places for the New Year holidays in the hotels of Elbrus region were completely sold out in August-September. Moreover, first of all, apartments and suites were purchased. And in early October, it was almost impossible to reserve a place in an economy class room. Thus, about 6-7 thousand people will be at a ski resort at the same time on New Year's holidays - and these are only those who live in hotels. If you take into account people who come on excursions, the Elbrus region in the early days of January will be visited by more than 40 thousand people.

It can be predicted that during the winter season at least 120 thousand people will have a rest, ”Tarim says. - And maybe more.

Until 2020, it is planned to allocate more than 6 billion rubles to the development of the Elbrus special economic zone, said Oleg Gorchev, General Director of KSK. Ultimately, at the site of the Elbrus resort, it is planned to create an integrated infrastructure designed for a comfortable rest of 15 thousand tourists a day. The total length of the routes on Cheget and Elbrus will be more than 100 km, and the maximum throughput of all cable cars will reach 54 thousand people per day.

By the way

The highest mountain gondola roads are located in Bolivia at a ski resort on Mount Chakaltaya - 5422 meters high, in China, on the Dagu Himalayan glacier - station heights - 4843 meters, and in Indonesia on the Jaya resort - 4800 meters above sea level.

In Kabardino-Balkaria, it is customary to say that how a magnet attracts people from all over the world , and not in vain, because everyone who has ever visited these wonderful places will definitely want to come back here again and again.

Mount Cheget   - the most accessible observation point from which a magnificent view of Elbrus opens. The view on the south side is no less bewitching - stunning views of the Main Caucasus Range: Mount Donguz-Orun, the Semeru glacier, Nakru, the peaks of the Small and Big Kogutaya.

Cheget is a favorite place for skiers and snowboarders, and especially freeride lovers - here is a vast expanse for off-piste skiing. If in winter on Cheget the enchanted slopes and rocks are fascinated by crystal clear white snow, then in spring and summer it is covered with greenery and beautiful mountain flowers. In the warm season, trekking and cycling around Cheget are popular.

Glade "Azau"   - This is the starting point on the slopes of Elbrus. The Azau glade is located right at the foot of the mountain in the Baksan Valley. Here are the first lines of the ski lifts, many different cafes where you can eat and stock up on calories before a difficult climb or long skiing. There are also hotels and ski rental shops. Here, the only Azout rolling out onto the glade "Azau".

In the meadow of Azau.

Station "Old Horizon"   - the first station on the slope of Elbrus after the first stage of the pendulum cableway starting from the Azau glade. Here, most often you can observe enthusiastic people who appeared on Elbrus for the first time, who madly photograph all around. It is here that the peaks of Elbrus are shown and become visible, since in the valley, due to the steep elevation difference, they cannot be seen behind the rocky volcanic spurs. From the station "Old Horizon" you can ski or snowboard along the picturesque and uncomplicated slope down to the valley to the "Azau", but you can take the second turn and take it even higher to the station "Mir".

Station "Old Horizon" and a view of Azau.

Station "Mir"   opens up new heights and new experiences. The views around are more and more striking, and at the peaks of Elbrus you can look at the details of the rocks that seem so close. At this station, as well as at others, you can eat and warm up in a cafe.

Station "Mir".

Gara-Bashi Station   It is the final destination that can be reached by cable car, you can climb Elbrus only on foot or in the snowcat.

Shelter "Barrels"  located slightly higher from Gara-Bashi station. This is the first shelter in which climbers can stop and acclimatize before climbing to the peaks of Elbrus. "Barrels" are more than a dozen box cars, most of which are barrel-shaped, which is why they got their name. Barrels are symbolically painted in a tricolor of the colors of the Russian flag. In each "barrel" there are berths, gas stoves, electricity.

The outer station of the Gara-Bashi cableway and “barrels”.

Shelter of the Eleven (Shelter 11) - an alpine shelter for climbers on the slope of Elbrus. The first three-story building was built back in 1938, but in 1998 it completely burned down due to violations of fire safety regulations. Now climbers accept a shelter built just below, and the old one is to be reconstructed in its former place from scratch. The "Shelter of the Eleventh" is closely connected with many stories of climbing Mount Elbrus and is literally a cult place.

The famous Shelter of the Eleven.

Shelter "Station EG 5300 ″   - a hut built on the saddle of Elbrus. Station EG 5300 was built on technology using modern materials by climbers enthusiasts. The orange hut in the shape of an aerodynamic dome, assembled from triangular honeycombs was not intended for living, but to save climbers in distress on Elbrus in bad weather. Thus it was planned to save hundreds of human lives. But despite all the efforts of the developers of the Station EG 5300 shelter, the hut was still destroyed, unable to withstand the load of hurricane winds on the saddle of Elbrus. In the near future, it is planned to resume the project of the EG 5300 station and reconstruct the hut on Elbrus, taking into account the shortcomings and errors made during the development and construction of the first station.

Station EG-5300.

"Ice Base"  - A starting point for experienced climbers on a more difficult route to the Shelter of the Eleven through the Garabashi Glacier. You can get to the “Ice Base” along a mountain road winding along the Southeast slope of Elbrus from the village of Terskol passing through the Ukrainian observatory, the 105th picket and the Maiden’s Spit waterfall between the Garabashi and Terskol glaciers.

Ukrainian observatory  on the spur of Mount Elbrus Terskol. Despite the fact that the branch of the Ukrainian observatory remained Ukrainian after the collapse of the USSR, Russian astronomers still work on it. The observatory on Elbrus has one of the largest telescopes in the post-Soviet space, whose diameter of the main mirror is 6 meters. As far as is known, private visits to the observatory are not welcome.

Observatory.

Baksan Gorge - One of the most famous not only in Kabardino-Balkaria, but also throughout the Central Caucasus. According to statistics, purely travelers who come here every year are two to three times more than the total population of Kabardino-Balkaria. There are two reasons for this popularity. Firstly, the Baksan Gorge is a road to the foot of Elbrus and Cheget. Secondly, it is an incredibly beautiful and unusual place.

Baksan Gorge.

National Park "Elbrus"  includes the mid-mountain and high-mountainous regions of the Caucasus from 1,400 to 5,642 meters above sea level, which includes the Main Caucasian Range and Elbrus itself. Elbrusier National Park was established to preserve the unique flora and fauna. In the Elbrus region, hundreds of animals and plants are under protection, many of which are unique and are found only in the vicinity of Elbrus.

Ski complex "Elbrus Azau" began its work in the middle of the 20th century. The first phase of the "Elbrus cable car" from the Azau station to the Krugozor station was launched in 1969, serving tourists from all over the world. Since then, the Elbrus Azau ski complex has been a special place for lovers of mountain slopes.

Two peaks of an extinct volcano (western and eastern) are almost year-round covered with snow and ice, which allows you to ride all year round in some separate sections of the slope of Elbrus. The two-peak giant Elbrus conquers its guests with wide slopes that will suit both skiers and snowboarders.

Mount Elbrus is the highest peak not only in Russia, but also in Europe. The western peak has a height of 5,642 m, the eastern one - 5621 m. The maximum lift height on cable cars is 3,780 m (Gara-Bashi). And the skiers confidently declare: "Elbrus is the largest ski mountain in the world."

The ski complex "Elbrus Azau" originates in the glade of Azau, located at the foot of the majestic Elbrus. There are two cableway stations in the Azau glade:

  • "Old" pendulum
  • new gondola road

Both cable cars run parallel to each other. There are 2 lines of both cableways, the 3rd stage is under construction. On the 3rd stage there is also a one-seat cable car, but it does not always work. From the 2nd stage (Mir station), those who wish to go upstairs go up in the snowmobiles, the time of getting up to "Shelter-11" is 20 minutes.

Ski slopes of Elbrus

Skating on the slopes of the Elbrus Azau ski resort is much more comfortable than on Cheget. The ski area on the slopes of Elbrus is suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Officially, the Elbrus Azau ski resort has 7 tracks with a total length of about 11 km. In fact, the slope of Elbrus is one continuous track where skiers and bordists ride at all levels of training. The length of the route from the Bochki shelter (Gara-Bashi station) to the Azau glade is 6 km, from the Shelter 11 it is 8-10 km, depending on the chosen descent option.

In general, the slopes of Elbrus are wide and gentle “blue” tracks, with small differences in elevation and short “red” sections. And although there are not many nets and limiters, you should not go beyond the boundaries of marked tracks.

Scheme of tracks and lifts "Elbrus - Azau"

On most of the tracks of the Elbrus Azau complex, the skiing season lasts from approximately October to May.

At an altitude of more than 3780 m (from Gara-Bashi and above) it is possible to ride all year round. Climbing Mount Elbrus in this area is carried out on foot or at the snowcat. Also, for the guests of the Elbrus Azau ski complex, high-altitude shelters work. As a rule, these mini-hotels with a limited range of services stop tourists before climbing the peaks of the great Elbrus.

Mini-buildings of shelters protect from snow and wind, they have light, gas and water. Small rooms of mountain shelters are always equipped with sleeping places (blankets and pillows are available) and have a dining area. Here tired climbers can take refuge from the weather, gain strength, go through acclimatization, spend the night. Frequent guests in alpine shelters are skiers and snowboarders who want to relax after descending from the top of Elbrus.

The difficulty of the descent from the point "Shelter-11" 4050m to the "meadow Azau" 2350m

Green is an easy section, blue is a more complicated section, red is a complex section of the track, and black is very complex.

The Elbrus-Azau ski complex can be recommended to beginners who want to hone their skills, as well as to those who prefer calm skiing to their pleasure.

For beginners in the Azau glade, a VL-400 “mop” yoke is installed, which serves a gentle “green” slope.

Trains from many large cities of Russia go to the Mineralnye Vody station and Pyatigorsk.
Travel time from Moscow:1 day

To the slopes of Elbrus and Cheget by bus / car

From these large cities, excellent bus services to the Cheget and Elbrus-Azau routes are organized. In addition to the relatively cheap regular buses that will take you 2.5-3.5 hours, there are also minibuses and regular taxis, which will come out somewhat more expensive, but without reference to the timetable. It is better to bargain with taxi drivers. At the peak of the season, the price is so high that you can persuade the driver by 2/3 of the originally announced price.

The distance to the slopes from Nalchik is 130 km. A little further from Mineralnye Vody - 180 km.

When driving, you need to get to the post of the city of Baksan, and then head for the villages of Tyrnyauz and Elbrus, behind which there will be a resort area.

Resort Village

In total, there are 6 villages in the resort area, which are stretched along the Baksan Gorge for 16 km, but with a developed infrastructure for tourism 3. From the villages to the ski lifts, they take a taxi.

Ski season

The ski season is from October almost until the month of May, and above the Garabashi slopes in acceptable condition all year round. The most pleasant time is February, March, April. In March, the weather is so good that you can see sunbathers on the slopes.

  • Buying a ski pass for the entire stay on vacation you save money;
  • Do not wait in line to purchase a one-time ski pass.

A small clarification: if you want to use the towbar, then the general ski pass does not apply to it. You will need to buy a one-time ticket.

There are two main ski areas in the Elbrus region: Elbrus Azau and Cheget.  We will tell you more about them.

Elbrus - Azau

Familiarity with skiing is necessary from the slope of Elbrus in the first stage.

Manifestations of the disease are not pleasant: fatigue, shortness of breath, headache, palpitations, flatulence, nausea, which reaches vomiting. Therefore, do not refuse your body in the period of adaptation and get used to the height gradually.

Beautiful official video about the season 2015/16 on Elbrus:

Ski pass prices for cable cars on the Elbrus-Azau slope

For Elbrus-Azau slopes, there is a tariff schedule for cableway services from 8 options. For the 2016-2017 season, prices have not yet been published on the official website, focus on the last season. In parentheses is the price of holidays and weekends:

  • Excursion one-time climb - 500 (600) rubles.
  • Half-day subscription is valid from 12 in the morning - 800 (900) rubles.
  • Daily subscription - 1300 (1500) rubles.
  • For two days - 2500 (2900) rubles.
  • For three days - 3700 (4300) rubles.
  • For four days - 4900 (5700) rubles.
  • For five days - 6100 (7100) rubles.
  • For six days (actually eight, two days of which you will not use the subscription, enjoying other types of recreation) - 7300 (8500) rubles.
  • Children under 6, adults over 75, disabled people of group I pass is free.

In addition to the actual cost, they will also charge you 100 rubles for a plastic card  ski pass, and will refund the amount after the card is returned.

Cable cars

On the slope of Elbrus there are as many as 7, one of which is still under construction. The length of the roads is divided into 3 parts - 2 transfers.

First of all  goes from the station "Azau" to the "Old Horizon". You can climb the new cable car of the Roma-1 gondola type in 5 minutes, or use the Elbrus-1 pendulum cable car, which will take you in 12 minutes. The length of the tracks in the first case is 1740, in the second - 1900 meters, passing at an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level.

Second turn goes from the station “Old horizons” to the station “Mir”, lifting you to a height of three and a half thousand meters in 7 minutes to “Roma-2” or 12 minutes to “Elbrus-2”. During this time you will cover a distance of 1800 meters.

Third turn  will lift you to an altitude of 3780 meters in 15 minutes on the Elbrus chair lift. The gondola that duplicates this kilometer-long climb is not yet ready for commissioning.

You can go even higher - to "Shelter-11", using a snowcat or snowmobile. The rise will take about 20 minutes and will cost from 400 rubles.

The tow-road goes along the Azau glade for 5 minutes and rises from the mark of 2300 meters to 2500.

Tracks Elbrus-Azau

There are 7 tracks on the slopes of Elbrus, more suitable for beginners and amateurs than Cheget tracks. Although in reality the tracks are not separated from each other in any way and represent a wide general lane for skiing.

  • From “Shelter-11” to “Gara-Bashi” there is a wide gentle slope suitable for training beginners when they get used to the highlands.
  • From Gara-Bashi to Mir station, the elevation will be 280 meters. Gentle and wide, the track is quite steep and has been assigned an average degree of difficulty. Right already cooler than left.
  • From the "World" to the "Old Horizon" the height difference of 500 meters. The beginning of this site is only for the most experienced. A little lower the descent will be within the reach of an amateur, who stands firmly on skis.
  • From the "Horizon" to the glade of Azau, the difference is 650 meters. At first narrow and steep, the track is gradually expanding to an average degree of difficulty.

Here in this video you can visually see the descent from Mir Station to Azau Glade, 4.5 km:

The total length of the descent from Garabashi to Azau is 6815 meters, with a track width of 60 to 80 meters, which corresponds to international standards for skiing.

Garabashi Gorge, Terskol Gorge, Observatory and Semifinal, as well as several smaller routes dangerous to life, are used by fans of freeriding.

People die due to negligence, avalanches or falling into cracks of twenty meters outside the zones of the rolled tracks.

Cheget

The slopes of Mount Cheget are definitely not for beginners.

Cheget Pass

If you have already bought a ski pass on the slopes of Elbrus, you will have to buy it separately for Cheget. Only two options are on sale: excursion for 500 rubles and for the whole day for 800.

Chegeta cable cars

There are only three cable cars and two lines on Cheget. You can get from the Cheget glade to the Ay cafe on the Cheget-1 chairlift or the pair-chair road. Lifting with a length of 1600 meters in the first case will take you 11 minutes, in the second - 17. During this time, you will rise from a height of 2700 to a height of 2750 meters above sea level.

The second-stage Cheget-2 chair lifts to a height of 3000 meters in 6 minutes. During these minutes, 900 meters of a mountain slope will fly under you.

Cheget Trails

There are 15 tracks on Cheget, with a total length of 20 km. The difference in height from the upper to the lower points is 950 meters.

Lumpiness, steep slopes, pine forest attract freeriders. Snowboarders prefer the southern slope - it is wider, although it maintains the steepness of the slope.

Beginners have nothing to do here. Unless there is a small piece of an easy route 350 meters long at the very top - above the Cheget 3 station, which can be reached only on a yoke. Everything else is marked as high-level tracks - for professionals and freeride slopes. An additional risk is the possibility of convergence of avalanches and rocks.

Housing

Pensions and hotels

The easiest option to rent a hotel is to choose and book it on the resort’s official website: http://prielbrusie-ski.ru/view/accommodation/ or in a specialized housing aggregator in Elbrus region - nedoma.ru

Or use hotel aggregators (Bucking, Island, Oktogo) - there you can find truthful reviews and take advantage of aggregator bonuses.

Private sector

If you prefer housing conditions, it is best to stay in Terskol - from this village is closest to the ski lifts. The cost is from 500 rubles per person per day. The farther from the ski slopes, the cheaper the accommodation. Consider options in Baidaevo, Tegenekli, Elbrus, Neutrino. The latter is located at a distance of 16-18 kilometers from Cheget and Azau.

Information about renting apartments or rooms can be easily found on the spot in any store or cafe. Do not be surprised. This is one of the features of the resort area. But if you are shy about asking or prefer to analyze as many options as possible, the Internet is at your service. People are increasingly placing their ads on rental housing there, for example, here: https://www.airbnb.ru/.

Accompanying services

Rent

The resort has about a dozen stores where you can buy special equipment for sports or mountaineering. But such a purchase is not always justified. Therefore, it is easier and cheaper to contact the rental points. Rental is carried out all in the same stores or at special rental points in the Azau and Cheget valleys. Sometimes such a service is provided in hotels for residents.

It is considered rental for a day. For equipment or gear a security deposit and / or document is made.

You can immediately take the kit: skis + poles + boots or snowboard + boots. Children's costs 600 rubles, an adult 900 rubles - on the first day. In the following, or if you pay immediately for several days - cheaper, in January holidays more. Also, there are glasses, helmets, jackets, overalls, tents, sledges, waterproof trousers and many other things that beginners do not even think of.

At rental locations, they often provide repair services for damaged equipment.

Personal instructor

For those who want to study with an instructor, you need to keep in mind that you need to register in advance. Their work is in great demand. Approximately one hour of an individual lesson costs 1000 rubles.

There are instructors teaching children.

You can catch such an important person near the ski lifts or directly during the briefing in the clearings.

If this is your first time skiing, do not save on consulting for a beginner. They can not only bring you pleasure, but also maintain health.

Transfer

You can order cars of different classes and different capacities, flesh to minibuses and trucks. They will come to you at the time indicated by you and take you where you need to. You can meet at the airport or at the railway station.

You can book a transfer in advance here: http://prielbrusie-ski.ru/order-transfer/

Communication

In the ski resorts of the Caucasus, the best communication is with the mobile operators Megafon, MTS and Beeline. Do not forget that you will be in the roaming zone. Incoming calls are charged, outgoing calls come at a high price. Check the cost of services with your service provider.

To communicate with friends on the slopes, use walkie-talkies.

Wi-Fi and Internet cafe

There is a cafe for accessing the network in the Cheget boarding house in the clearing of the same name. Another in Terskol. Wi-Fi is provided by many hotels and pensions.

The military-historical festival “Cloudy Front” is held from July 28 to August 25 on the slopes of Mount Elbrus in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. The organizers and partners of the festival are the government of Kabardino-Balkaria, the All-Russian public movement to perpetuate the memory of those killed during the defense of the Fatherland, the Search Movement of Russia, the search squad Memorial Elbrus. Directly on the spot, the festival program is organized by search engines from the regional branch of the “Search Movement of Russia” in Bashkortostan and the search team “Raid” from St. Petersburg.

The festival is attended by search engines and reenactors from 20 regions of Russia, more than 120 people are expected to participate. The base camp of the festival is divided at an altitude of about 2200 meters near the glade of Azau.

At the first stage of the festival, acclimatization exits to the heights are carried out, exploratory works are being conducted. The exhibition "Secrets of the Soldier's Field" is open, showing the findings of search engines, attracting about 100 visitors daily.

The public reception of the "Fate of a Soldier" action began. The first success - the place of death and burial of the Red Army man from the Krasnodar Territory, who died, as it turned out, in the Krymsk region, was found; clues on the Red Army man from Orenburg were found.

“Search engines from St. Petersburg, Nizhnevartovsk and Bashkortostan spent two days in an acclimatization and search outlet on the slopes of Mount Elbrus. During search operations on the Garabashi and Terskol glaciers (altitude up to 3800 m), fragmented remains of six Red Army soldiers, related objects (shells, clips from the Mosin rifle, buttons) were found. The issue of transporting the remains down and sending them for examination is currently being resolved, ”said Vladimir Volkov, head of the regional branch of the Russian Search Movement in Belarus.

The “Sky Front" festival is preparing for its second phase: reconstruction camps are being built, search engines are undergoing acclimatization. From August 14, reconstruction sites will work, where guests can get acquainted with the life of the warring parties, with the ammunition and armament of soldiers of the Red Army infantry units and Wehrmacht mountain rangers.

Cableways of the Elbrus-Azau complex

First Stage: Azau - Horizon

The Elbrus-Azau ski complex originates in the Azau glade, located at the foot of Elbrus, there are catering points, there is a ski equipment rental point, coffee and tea vending machines. There are two cableway stations in the Azau glade:

  • old pendulum;
  • new gondola road.

Both cable cars run parallel to each other. Currently there are 2 lines at each cable car, the 3rd stage is under construction. On the 3rd stage there is also a single-seat cable car, which, however, does not always work. From the 2nd stage (Mir station), everyone who wants to go up is taking a snowcat, the time of getting up to "Shelter-11" is about 20 minutes.

  • The Elbrus 1 pendulum cableway (2350-3000 m) leaves from the Azau station and reaches the Old Horizon station. At both stations there are cafes and playrooms. The journey time of the old pendulum road is 15 minutes.
  • The new gondola-type Elbrus cable car was opened in December 2006. It connects the lower return station in the Azau glade with the upper drive station “Old Horizon” and is installed parallel to the existing pendulum cableway. This is the latest model of gondola type cableway with detachable gondolas. The capacity of one gondola is 8 people. 58 gondolas work simultaneously. The length of the route is 1740 m., The road gradient is 580 m. The journey time of the new gondola road is 5 minutes, the average speed is 6 m / s. The capacity of the cable car is up to 2400 people per hour.

Second stage: Horizon - World

The old pendulum cableway Elbrus-2 and the new gondola-type Elbrus cableway operate on this line.

  • The Elbrus-2 pendulum cableway (3,000 - 3,500 m) starts from the Old Krugozor station and goes to the Mir station. The length of the road is 1500 m. The station has a cozy cafe "Mir" and the Museum of the military glory of the defenders of Elbrus and the Caucasus passes during the Great Patriotic War.
  • The new gondola-type Elbrus cableway (3,000 - 5,000 m) was opened in April 2009. It is the latest model of a cableway with 8 seater gondolas manufactured by the French company ROMA - one of the world leaders in the field of cable transport systems. The road connects two ski stations: "Old Horizon" and "World". The length of the road is 1800 m, the throughput is 2400 people / hour. Travel time in one direction - 5 minutes 13 seconds.

Third line: World - Gara-Bashi

On the 3rd stage, the Elbrus chairlift operates.

  • The Elbrus chairlift (3500 - 3850 m) starts from Mir station and goes to Gara - Bashi station. The single-seat lift is quite old, it does not work stably. From here, from a height of 3800 m begins the certified route No. 1 to the glade of Azau 2300 m.

Above, to the station "Shelter 11" (4200 m) can be reached by snowcat. All grocers are private, so their cost fluctuates. Tentatively, a distance of 18 km can be overcome for 1000 rubles.

Mount Cheget: cable cars and tracks

It was on Cheget (2100 - 3050 m) in 1963 that the country's first cableway was built. The height of Mount Cheget is 3,700 meters. The maximum lifting height is 3050 meters. The difference in ride height is 1140 meters. Cheget tracks are considered one of the most difficult in the world ski resorts. In Russia, Cheget serves as a benchmark for the complexity of tracks. On the Cheget mountain there are 2 lines of the Cheget chairlift, a pair of chair-steam chairlifts, and a chain of tow-and-tow roads. The total length of the lifts is 4300 meters, the total length of the ski slopes is 20 km, and if we take into account the possibility of virgin skiing, the total ski area will be about 100 km. Mount Cheget is 1 km from the village of Terskol and 4 km from the Elbrus cable car complex.

First Stage (2100-2750)

  • The Cheget-1 chairlift departs from the lower Polyany Cheget station and continues to the Ay cafe station (2750 m). The station of the cafe “Ay” has an observation deck with a magnificent view of the mountains. Altitude difference - 650 m.
  • The Parnaya twin-chair road duplicates the Cheget-1 KKD and also goes from the lower station of the Cheget glade and reaches the Ay cafe station.

Second stage (2750-3000)

  • The Cheget-2 chairlift departs from the Ay cafe and goes to the Cheget station. On the way, a picture opens: on the right are the snow-white caps of Elbrus, on the left are the peaks of Donguzorun, Kogutaya and Nakra sparkling with eternal snows.

Tug-towing roads

  • towing line VL-650 - (2750 m - 3000 m) with a length of 650 meters, travel time 5 minutes;

The new line from Mir station is located at an altitude of 3455 meters, the highest point of Garabashi's lift is 3847 meters.

“Today we are opening the ski season on the highest mountain in Europe - Elbrus,” said Lev Kuznetsov, Minister of the Russian Federation for North Caucasus Affairs, at the opening ceremony.

“Through this project, we also give Russians the opportunity to look more at domestic resorts and understand that they are competitive today,” said Kuznetsov.

“In Europe they don’t build higher, and in Europe they don’t ride higher,” emphasized the head of Kabardino-Balkaria, Yuri Kokov.

“It can be predicted that at least 120 thousand people will have a rest during the winter season,” Tarim says.

Slopes and stations of Elbrus

The Elbrus Azau ski complex opened in the middle of the 20th century. Since then, tourists from different countries have flocked to the resort continuously to ride on the resort's tracks. The tracks here vary in complexity, everyone will find the track to taste. A mesh fence is installed on the slopes, which creates a certain level of safety for skiers.

Slopes of Elbrus

The slopes of Elbrus can be divided into 5 sections. Let's go down from the highest point

  1. At an altitude of 4100 m, "Shelter 11" is located and there is a descent to the Gara-Bashi station "Shelter Bochka", an altitude of 3780 m. You can climb here only by snowcat or on foot: there are no cable cars here. You can ride all year round.
  2. From Gara-Bashi station (Bochka Shelter) to Mir station. Here, the height decreases from 3780 m to 3500 m. A single-seat cableway is functioning, another gondola is under construction. The complexity of the route is marked in blue, it has a diverse relief - before the shelter it is gentle and wide, and then - narrow and steep.
  3. From the Mir station, from a height of 3,500 meters we go down to 3,000 meters, where the Old Horizon station is located. Two cableways operate on this section: the pendulum Elbrus-2 and the gondola Puma-2. The route at the beginning of the descent is very steep and narrow belongs to the black category of difficulty, and then goes into a wide blue.
  4. From the station “Old Horizon” from a height of 3000 meters we go down to the glade of Azau at a height of 2350 meters. It also launched two cable cars of the same types as in the previous section: Elbrus-1 and Puma-1. The slope begins with a complex narrow and steep red track and ends with a blue track - gentle and wide.
  5. Glade of Azau. The difference in elevation here is 200 (2500-2300) meters, this is a kind of “paddling pool” for beginners of skiers. A towing mop type operates here.

Although the slopes are conditionally divided into sections depending on the level of climb and difficulty, in reality, the slopes of Azau are one continuous route, destinations for skiers and snowboarders of different levels of training. Fans of extreme sports can try the untouched virgin lands of Elbrus, of course, accompanied by an experienced instructor. You will have to get to the virgin land by helicopter or by snowcat.

Elbrus Shelters

Shelters (mini-hotels) are located at the highest points of the Elbrus-Azau complex. Designed to relax tourists before or after climbing Mount Elbrus. Skiers can also relax here after a long descent from the top.

The old shelters did not have a high level of comfort, but here you could find the most necessary: \u200b\u200bheat, light, water, gas, a berth. More modern shelters, such as Leap, built by Italians, are much more comfortable.

Prices for lifts of Elbrus - Azau

The price of a one-day adult ski pass for the Elbrus resort in the 2017/2018 season is 1550-1900r, depending on the high or low season. When buying a skipass, discounts on lift services apply. For children under 5 years of age, disabled people of group 1 and disabled children under 18 years of age, pensioners over 75 years old - free of charge. People aged 65-75 years - 10% discount.

How to get to Azau

There are many ways to get to Azau: train, plane, bus, transfer.

  • By plane to Mineralnye Vody or Nalchik, then by bus or taxi to the village of Terskol.
  • By train to Mineralnye Vody, Nalchik, Pyatigorsk, Prokhladny, then by bus or taxi to the village of Terskol.
  • From Mineralnye Vody, Prokhladny and Nalchik, you can take a shuttle to Terskol.

A trip to Terskol by transfer or taxi takes an average of 2.5-4 hours. Depends on the distance of the starting point of departure.

Ski complex "Cheget"

The second popular Elbrus complex is Cheget. The opening of the resort took place in the middle of the 20th century, when the first chairlift in the Soviet Union began to work. Cheget tracks became the most difficult in the country. After the opening in 1963, a winter sports day was held here. The chair road gave a powerful impetus to the development of skiing.

Since then, Cheget’s popularity has not decreased not only in the country, but also in the world, although its tracks are still considered one of the most difficult tracks in the world. The tracks on Azau are much simpler and more comfortable.

However, the lifts here are still the same - old Soviet, in other words, slow, uncomfortable and unreliable. If you need comfort and smooth slopes - Cheget is not for you. Ratraki do not touch these slopes, here you are alone with the natural relief of Elbrus.

Cheget is a mecca for experienced riders. Many dream to experience its untouched virgin lands, slopes of rough terrain, slopes from 20 to 45 degrees.

The highest point of the slopes is 3050 meters, with a mountain height of 3700 meters. The lower station is located at an altitude of 2100 m. The total length of the tracks is 20 km. The ski season lasts from November to May.

Trails and cable cars Cheget

Cheget tracks are beautiful and dangerous. Only experienced skiers can ride here. If you go away from the lifts, then you can ride only in a group, with a full set of avalanche equipment. There are often avalanches, especially on the northern slopes. The southern slopes are more gentle and even. Often the tracks are closed due to the high risk of avalanches. The mine rescue service is constantly on duty.

Of particular note are the famous Cheget mounds, skiing on which develops ski control and a sense of balance. The hillocks are located in the second stage, including under the cable car.

The routes on Cheget 11, they are different in their complexity. Snowcat is very rare on them. We will study the resort's tracks and start from the top of Cheget:

Section 3070 meters - Cheget-3 Station (3000 m)

At the top of Cheget, the lightest green track originates at an altitude of 3000-3070 meters. Its length is only 300 meters. It is good here for beginners to hone their skills. You can climb to the top along the tow-rope cableway of the “Mops” type. From the top opens the magnificent Elbrus in all its glory.

The site "Cheget-3" (3000 m) - "Cheget-2" (2750 m).

From the Cheget-3 station, more complex routes of red and blue color begin. Serves plot single-seat cableway. Near the lower station of this site is the famous cafe "Ay", where Yuri Vzibor liked to stay and the film "Breakfast overlooking Elbrus" was shot. The observation deck at the cafe offers a beautiful view of the two-headed peak of Elbrus, the mountains of Donguzorun, Nakra and Kogutai.

Plot "Cheget-2" (2750m) - Polyana Cheget (2100 m)

This track is also quite steep, but marked in blue. In Cheget glade life is in full swing, there are many cafes, restaurants, shops. The site is served by single-seat and two-seat cable cars. Once again, these are old and worn lifts that quite often break.

The northern slopes of Cheget are more suitable for lovers of extreme skiing and freeriding. The most famous descent in the common people received the name "Dollar" for its bends, this is a real test, even for an experienced skier. The southern slope is more gentle and wide - for lovers of measured driving and snowboarders, but it also has a difficult terrain.

Cheget Lift Prices

The cost of a subscription per day is 800 rubles. Excursion climb - 500 rubles for 1 time. There are no multi-day ski passes.

How to get to Cheget

  1. By plane to Mineralny Vody or Nalchik, then change to a regular bus to Terskol.
  2. By train to Mineralnye Vody, Nalchik, Pyatigorsk or Prokhladny, after changing to a regular bus or taxi to Terskol.
  3. Order a group taxi from Mineralnye Vody, Prokhladny, Nalchik.

Accommodation

You can explore the slopes of Cheget more than one day, so the best option would be to rent a room in a local hotel. There are a lot of them on Cheget. You can stay in the hotel of the same name at the foot of the mountain, or you can rent a room in Terskol. But the hotels on the Cheget glade are more attractive for tourists, because there are no more than 5 minutes walk to the ski lifts.

Our tip:  Before you first set foot on the Cheget tracks, carefully study the slopes and patterns of the tracks, the tracks do not have markings, but you will determine in which area you are in the area. It’s better to start riding with an instructor, guide or in a group, as there is a great danger of getting lost. It’s better not to leave rolled out seats. Cheget is highly likely to be injured, so follow safety precautions.

If you have ever visited the Elbrus region, do not hesitate - you will want to return there again and again. And each time will be full of impressions and emotions.

Active Holidays in Elbrus Region

The North Caucasus attracts modern extremes no less than their much more active predecessors who lived in the 20th century. In those days, the mountains were not intended for romantic walks, but served as a kind of "scale" for measuring willpower and endurance.

The cable cars of Elbrus have made this area much more attractive for lovers of mountain air and selfie lovers. Especially popular is the "Shelter of the Eleven" - the highest mountain hotel located in the south-eastern part of Elbrus, at an altitude of 4130 meters above sea level. The height of the peaks of Elbrus (this mountain is an extinct volcano) - 5621 and 5642 meters.

Today, a trip to Elbrus can be made less extreme and more colorful. With the advent of the “route” of multi-tier cable cars, inaccessible peaks became accessible even to unprepared travelers. It all depends on the intentions and plans of climbers, skiers and vacationers.

On the "cable car" - to Elbrus!

The cable cars of Elbrus originate from the Azau glade, which is located at an altitude of 2350 meters above sea level. From here, from the glade of Azau, all pedestrian routes leading to the top begin.

Glade of Azau is not a deserted corner of nature dusted with snow, but rather a modern tourist center equipped in accordance with the latest progressive developments: here, in addition to rental points for necessary equipment and sports equipment, there are many pharmacies, shops, hotels and cafes.

Even beginners can tame a snowboard or mountain skiing. The main desire! Thanks to instructing experienced mentors, a person who has never before been involved in winter sports can learn to climb the descent from the Krugozor station in just one day. This is the name of the first alpine point, for the ascent on which the first cableway in these places was built. Elbrus (photo below) is not yet visible from here. But, if you transfer to the car that goes to the next station, Mir, the travelers will finally have a view of Elbrus.

Hotel above the clouds

The highest point of the second stage (from the Krugozor station to the Mir station), launched in 1976, reaches 3,470 meters. The traffic pattern in this section is similar to the previous one: next to the old, pendulum cableway, a new gondola operates. After the completion of the construction of the Great Elbrus Cable Car, the hotel above the clouds (as they informally call the Shelter of the Eleven) became finally accessible to tourists of different levels of training, as well as for those who first appeared so high in the mountains.

Two legends are connected with the official name of the hotel - “Shelter of the Eleven”. According to one of them, eleven climbers were once frozen here, who were captured by a snowstorm. According to the second legend, the name was given to the hotel by a local resident when he stayed for the night with his wards - students of a rural school.

The second stage of the "cable car" lay over the icy peaks and melting snow of Mount Elbrus. Did the high-altitude builders, who erected the second stage, suspected that after several decades the cable cars of Elbrus would lift a person even higher?

Final stop - “Gara-Bashi”

Since December 27 of last year, at the services of tourists, climbers and just vacationers who came to see Elbrus, there is a cable car, the height of which reaches 3847 meters. Gara-Bashi station and (so far) this cable car is the highest in Europe. Previously, the cable car with a lift to the Aiguille du Midi, the western peak of Mont Blanc, was considered the highest mountain.

The new cableway, according to experts, compares favorably with the French one, as it is suitable for servicing all categories of skiers. The capacity of the cableway Mir-Gara-Bashi is 750 people per hour. More than a billion rubles were allocated for its construction and arrangement. In the foreseeable future, the organizers of the ski resort areas of the Elbrus region plan to simultaneously accept up to 12 thousand fans of winter sports.

Shelter "Barrels"

Of course, the Elbrus cable cars are not designed to take travelers to the very end of the trip. Before climbing to the top, tourists acclimatize, having settled in one of nine six-seater vans, surprisingly similar to barrels, for several days. Accustomed to the local climate, travelers will leave the Barrel shelter and rise to the top of the “two-headed dragon”.
