The new cableway on Elbrus has become the highest mountain, unparalleled in Russia and Europe. Prior to this, the highest mountain cable car in Europe was considered to be a lift on top of the Aiguille du Midi in the western part of the Mont Blanc massif, which is connected with the French resort of Chamonix. The project was implemented by North Caucasus Resorts JSC, the volume of capital investments in construction amounted to over 1 billion rubles.

Shelter "Barrels"  located slightly higher from Gara-Bashi station. This is the first shelter in which climbers can stop and acclimatize before climbing to the peaks of Elbrus. Shelter of the Eleven (Shelter 11) - an alpine shelter for climbers on the slope of Elbrus. The first three-story building was built back in 1938, but in 1998 it completely burned down due to violations of fire safety regulations. Now climbers accept a shelter built just below, and the old one is to be reconstructed in its former place from scratch. The "Shelter of the Eleventh" is closely connected with many stories of climbing Mount Elbrus and is literally a cult place.

Shelter "Station EG 5300 ″   - a hut built on the saddle of Elbrus. Station EG 5300 was built on technology using modern materials by climbers enthusiasts. The orange hut in the shape of an aerodynamic dome, assembled from triangular honeycombs was not intended for living, but to save climbers in distress on Elbrus in bad weather. Thus it was planned to save hundreds of human lives. But despite all the efforts of the developers of the Station EG 5300 shelter, the hut was still destroyed, unable to withstand the load of hurricane winds on the saddle of Elbrus. In the near future, it is planned to resume the project of the EG 5300 station and reconstruct the hut on Elbrus, taking into account the shortcomings and errors made during the development and construction of the first station.

Tracks Elbrus-Azau

Ski complex "Cheget"

The second popular Elbrus complex is Cheget. The opening of the resort took place in the middle of the 20th century, when the first chairlift in the Soviet Union began to work. Cheget tracks became the most difficult in the country. After the opening in 1963, a winter sports day was held here. The chair road gave a powerful impetus to the development of skiing.

Since then, Cheget’s popularity has not decreased not only in the country, but also in the world, although its tracks are still considered one of the most difficult tracks in the world. The tracks on Azau are much simpler and more comfortable.

However, the lifts here are still the same - old Soviet, in other words, slow, uncomfortable and unreliable. If you need comfort and smooth slopes - Cheget is not for you. Ratraki do not touch these slopes, here you are alone with the natural relief of Elbrus.

Cheget is a mecca for experienced riders. Many dream to experience its untouched virgin lands, slopes of rough terrain, slopes from 20 to 45 degrees.

The highest point of the slopes is 3050 meters, with a mountain height of 3700 meters. The lower station is located at an altitude of 2100 m. The total length of the tracks is 20 km. The ski season lasts from November to May.

Trails and cable cars Cheget

Cheget tracks are beautiful and dangerous. Only experienced skiers can ride here. If you go away from the lifts, then you can ride only in a group, with a full set of avalanche equipment. There are often avalanches, especially on the northern slopes. The southern slopes are more gentle and even. Often the tracks are closed due to the high risk of avalanches. The mine rescue service is constantly on duty.

Of particular note are the famous Cheget mounds, skiing on which develops ski control and a sense of balance. The hillocks are located in the second stage, including under the cable car.

The routes on Cheget 11, they are different in their complexity. Snowcat is very rare on them. We will study the resort's tracks and start from the top of Cheget:

Section 3070 meters - Cheget-3 Station (3000 m)

At the top of Cheget, the lightest green track originates at an altitude of 3000-3070 meters. Its length is only 300 meters. It is good here for beginners to hone their skills. You can climb to the top along the tow-rope cableway of the “Mops” type. From the top opens the magnificent Elbrus in all its glory.

From the Cheget-3 station, more complex routes of red and blue color begin. Serves plot single-seat cableway. Near the lower station of this site is the famous cafe "Ay", where Yuri Vzibor liked to stay and the film "Breakfast overlooking Elbrus" was shot. The observation deck at the cafe offers a beautiful view of the two-headed peak of Elbrus, the mountains of Donguzorun, Nakra and Kogutai.

Plot "Cheget-2" (2750m) - Polyana Cheget (2100 m)

This track is also quite steep, but marked in blue. In Cheget glade life is in full swing, there are many cafes, restaurants, shops. The site is served by single-seat and two-seat cable cars. Once again, these are old and worn lifts that quite often break.

The northern slopes of Cheget are more suitable for lovers of extreme skiing and freeriding. The most famous descent in the common people received the name "Dollar" for its bends, this is a real test, even for an experienced skier. The southern slope is more gentle and wide - for lovers of measured driving and snowboarders, but it also has a difficult terrain.

But the hotels on the Cheget glade are more attractive for tourists, because there are no more than 5 minutes walk to the ski lifts.

It’s better to start riding with an instructor, guide or in a group, as there is a great danger of getting lost. It’s better not to leave rolled out seats. Cheget is highly likely to be injured, so follow safety precautions.

Hotel above the clouds

The highest point of the second stage (from the Krugozor station to the Mir station), launched in 1976, reaches 3,470 meters. The traffic pattern in this section is similar to the previous one: next to the old, pendulum cableway, a new gondola operates. After the completion of the construction of the Great Elbrus Cable Car, the hotel above the clouds (as they informally call the Shelter of the Eleven) became finally accessible to tourists of different levels of training, as well as for those who first appeared so high in the mountains.

Two legends are connected with the official name of the hotel - “Shelter of the Eleven”. According to one of them, eleven climbers were once frozen here, who were captured by a snowstorm. According to the second legend, the name was given to the hotel by a local resident when he stayed for the night with his wards - students of a rural school.

The second stage of the "cable car" lay over the icy peaks and melting snow of Mount Elbrus. Did the high-altitude builders, who erected the second stage, suspected that after several decades the cable cars of Elbrus would lift a person even higher?
