Was in Mikkel noticed that. What to see in Mikkeli? The main attractions. What to see

It is a regional center and attracts a lot of attention from both domestic and foreign tourists. This small and cozy town in an amazing way provides an opportunity for everyone to enjoy their vacation. Fans of outdoor activities, lovers of a quiet pastime, children and adults, shoppers and history buffs will feel great here.

Mikkeli Finland Attractions and Interesting Places

The most revered historical figure in is Gustav Mannerheim. Here is a monument on which the great Finnish commander is depicted on foot (unlike most of his other images). By the way, the city itself has exactly this type of movement, if you want to know it better, we recommend just walking along its beautiful streets.

First of all, of course, it is worth visiting the observation tower Naysvuori, which is located in the central part. It offers a beautiful view of the surroundings and all the sights of the city. A nice feature for Russian tourists is that absolutely all the names of the streets are translated into Russian. In addition, they all diverge in a straight line from the central square, which greatly simplifies orientation. The fact that the streets and buildings, regardless of the time of the year, are decorated with a variety of decorative elements made of flowers or fir branches, is also suitable for walking.

In the most stressful years of the history of Finland: during the Second World War and the War of Independence, it was in the main headquarters of the commander of the troops. In this regard, there are several large historical museums dedicated to military affairs, in particular, the Headquarters Museum and the Infantry. In addition, on Mannerheim’s birthday, June 4, a large number of tourists flock here from all over Finland. The fact is that on this day a car opens for visiting, in which Mannerheim was located during all the war years, it also presents an exposition dedicated to the Commander-in-Chief.

Festivals in Mikkel Finland

Often called the festival capital of Suomi, as a variety of events are held here, almost without stopping. Numerous concerts and exhibitions are held here, regardless of the season, interesting excursions and active entertainment are organized, so you can find entertainment for yourself and friends at any time. The popularity of the town is also due to the fact that it is located at a small distance, both from St. Petersburg and from Helsinki, so in just a couple of hours anyone can get here both from Russia and from the capital of Finland.

In the summer, the most popular with tourists are those who regularly start from. Today, the town is one of the leaders in providing such a service. Note that if there is a desire and financial means, anyone can not only buy tickets for swimming with a group, but also rent a small vessel. Moreover, the services of the captain and other staff will already be included in the price, and you just have to enjoy your vacation. Naturally, here you can also go fishing, having previously purchased a license. Ideal if you plan to fish for trout or pike perch, as these species of fish are not particularly well caught offshore.

If you want to relax on the water with your children, we recommend a visit. Here you can buy in the pools, visit the baths and saunas, ride a long water slide, and also visit the wax museum and the exhibition of retro cars. This pleasure costs about 20 euros per person, and for children, as in many, discounts are provided.

The central square of the city itself is a tourist attraction. In the center of the square is a monument to Marshal Mannerheim. Not far away is the famous Lutheran Cathedral, built of red brick in the late Gothic style. Every Sunday, the Cathedral fills the square with the sounds of an organ and solemn official singing.

Around the square there are buildings of the city hall, hotels, offices, banks and a large department store, and the old covered market - a monument of northern architecture is located nearby. By the way, every Saturday market rows are selected from the walls of the building and fill the square. At the beginning of the last century, the building was restored and turned into a museum of church objects collected in Mikkeli and its environs.

There are many legends about the estate and its name. Kenkavero translated from Finnish means "tribute to shoes." It is believed that this name came from the ancient custom of putting on boots only before visiting a church, and immediately upon arrival home - to take off. According to another version, the name of the estate originates from the ancient custom to give a cantor a salary for the delivery of correspondence of the spiritual chapter in the form of a pair of boots and woolen stockings. They also say that once the estate was the last bastion of Savolak’s batons who rebelled during the Dubin War.

You can visit this wonderful place at any time of the year and for free. Mikkeli is a very compact city, to get around it entirely will take no more than 2 hours. Despite its apparent insignificance, the first mention of it dates back to 1270, then there was a Novgorod churchyard. Mikkeli received the status of the city from the Russian Emperor Nicholas I in 1838, then the city was called St. Michel according to the then Russian fashion, almost St. Petersburg.

During the Second World War, the city was the main headquarters of the Finnish army, so the city was heavily bombed and now it is mostly built up with modern buildings. The main attractions are military museums, we did not visit them.

The city of Mikkeli was only 20 km away, and we visited it on our last day. The weather turned out to be extremely cold, it was only +8 degrees and a strong wind was blowing.

We left the car in the underground parking lot of the huge shopping mall “Stella”, parking on the principle you drive in, take a ticket where the time of entry is marked, payment upon departure. Parking costs 1 euro per hour.

On one side of the Stella shopping complex is an area with a monument to Marshal Mannerheim. He is considered the national hero of Finland and any town that the famous marshal has ever visited has a memorial museum, and it’s natural to erect a monument to the national hero on the main square of the city.

Monument to Marshal Mannerheim

In Mikkeli, two places associated with Mannerheim are the Museum of the Main Headquarters, where the working cabinet of Marshal Mannerheim and the headquarters of the ground forces are exhibited. At the Mikkeli train station, there is a saloon car used by Mannerheim from 1939 to 1946.

There is a city market on Mannerheim Square, the assortment is the same as on the market in - berries, flowers, fish, products of local artisans. And there was a huge queue for the bus, probably it would take 3 buses to accommodate all these people. So they also have lines.

Kirkkopuisto Church Park

This small park on the other side of the Stella shopping complex has a very long history. At this place, back in the years 1754-1806, there was a church and the church cemetery Sivolahti. After more than a quarter of a millennium, the park was reconstructed and reopened. The park is very small, I would call it a small square.

For some reason, the Finns love to portray naked men, and this archer is also naked. Maybe this is due to their tradition of joint visits to saunas?

   Kirkkopuisto Church Park

To hold national singing and music events in the fall of 1896, a covered stage was built in the park under the guidance of architect JohnLybeck.

Naysvuori Observation Tower

   Naysvuori Observation Tower

To view all the surroundings of the city, you can visit the observation tower "Naysvuori". The tower itself stands on a natural hill, a square is broken around, flowers are planted, a fountain is working, in a word everything is very beautiful. From the tower you can see the whole city and the adjacent forests and lakes.

Another sculpture of a naked man.

There is a small cafe on the ground floor of the tower. They sell traditional waffles at a price of 8 euros per serving, waffles can be ordered with jam, whipped cream or ice cream, they put a lot of ice cream, they saw it at the next table. The waffles themselves, to our taste, very much resemble pancakes, they are not crispy at all, but soft, like pancakes, we tried wafers like.

Mikkeli Main Cathedral

Main shopping street and Mikkeli Cathedral

In the city center, as expected, there is an impressive Lutheran Cathedral, there was a wedding, so we did not go inside. The cathedral was built in 1896-1897 by the outstanding Finnish architect Joseph Stenbeck. In total, he built 35 churches in Finland and Russia. Nearby is a small square.

Monument at the main cathedral, again the naked rider

According to Finnish tradition, there is a small monument next to the cathedral that fell in 1918, there was a revolution on Finnish soil, only in Finland the whites defeated under the command of Marshal Mannerheim.

TOURIST RESPONSES:

Mikkeli stands on the shores of Lake Saimaa. Moreover, the town is very ancient, people here lived somewhere from the 12th century. The city is named after its patron Saint Michael. The main feature of the city is a clear street layout. In winter, Mikkeli is a great place for skiing (from mid-November to the end of March, moreover) and other winter entertainments, and in the summer it is also pretty beautiful here. And fishing fans here are a must.

And also some concerts and festivals of amateur theaters and music, ballet, horse racing, and much more are constantly held in Mikkeli.

And a few words about the sights of the city:

Mannerheim Salonkivaunu

The saloon was created in the 30s of the last century for the Finnish President of Finland, 1944-1946, Karl Mannerheim. This car was part of the train, which also had two more sleeping cars, a restaurant car, a car for personnel, an anti-aircraft car and a car for transporting cars. The salon of the commander in chief consisted of a salon, five bedrooms, a kitchen and a toilet. On this train, Carl Gustav Emil made more than a hundred trips.
Of particular interest was the trip during his 75th birthday, during which he accepted personal congratulations from Adolf Hitler. The last time Mannerheim was committed as president in 1946 (before that he was a marshal and then regent). After the president’s death, the General Director of Finnish Railways rode in this car. In the 92nd year the trailer became a museum where the personal belongings of the commander are stored, as well as documents and audio materials of those years. Since the museum is open once a year, you can take a virtual walk through it here: http://salonkivaunu.mikkeli.fi/

Museum "Suur-Savon" (Suur-Savon museo)

This is a cultural and historical museum where you can learn more about the local culture, from the era of distant ancestors to the present day. In total - about 8000 exhibits. The museum exposition occupies several buildings, but the most interesting takes place in the main building. The exposition of everyday life of peasants of South Savo is very interesting (in fact, South Savo is an area in southeastern Finland with its center in Mikkeli). Simultaneously with the permanent exhibitions, temporary ones are held here (almost always 1-2 temporary ones).

This temple is large, wooden. Look for him in the western part of the city. The temple was built in the first quarter of the 19th century. By the way, this is the third largest church in the country. At the same time it can accommodate up to 2000 people. The architects took as a basis the best traditions of Lutheran churches, and the church turned out to be quite simple in appearance, with light walls and a roof of dark color, but with a complex shape.
The church keeps ancient bells of the mid 18th century. Inside the temple is very bright, very strict. The church is open only in summer. Free admission.

Since the 60s of the last century, a bell tower has been working near the cathedral, and inside there is an organ from the middle of the last century. The massive altar depicting the scene of the crucifixion of Christ is impressive. Near the temple there is a nice square with a pond. By the way, there is a belief that if you cross the bridge passing over this pond, then your wish will come true. Worth checking out! Entrance to the temple is free.

Naisvuoren Observation Tower (Naisvuoren Nakotorni)

This tower stands almost in the center of the city. And this is the highest point of Mikkeli, because, in addition to the fact that the tower is high (about 40 meters), it also stands on a hill, which, by the way, is popularly called the “Women's Mountain”. It is called so, because during the Russo-Finnish war, women watched from this hill how the fighting at the front takes place. The tower is made of white stone. The site can be reached by elevator. There is also a restaurant serving national Finnish cuisine. True, it seems, only in the summer. Also at the beginning of summer on this hill there is a children's festival with songs, dances and clowns.

Kenkavero Manor Museum

This is the residence of the parish priest on the lake. This building was built in the 15th century, and then this house was the 5th center of the spiritual and material life of the town. But by the end of the last century, the construction was in complete decline, so the city authorities took urgent restoration measures. So the house became a museum, where exhibits related to local art and craft are exhibited. The museum also has a restaurant serving traditional delicacies and a souvenir shop. In summer it is very romantic here, because the estate is surrounded by a picturesque garden with a sea of \u200b\u200bflowers (over 500 species). Entrance to the estate is free.

If you have a unique opportunity to visit the ancient Finnish city of Mikkeli - go without hesitation! Tourism in the city is considered almost the main part of the income, so the attitude towards visitors is very favorable. Local authorities do everything possible to make you feel very comfortable in the city and express a desire to come to Mikkeli more than once to enjoy the local sights again.

Cathedral / Mikkelin tuomiokirkko

Ristimaenkatu 2, Mikkeli, Finland (near the market square) - at this address is the main temple of the city, which locals are very proud of, and the territory adjacent to the church is a favorite vacation spot for citizens. Almost a hundred years ago, parishioners pitched a square here with a small picturesque pond. A bridge has been laid across this pond. There is still a belief in the city that people who have crossed the pond on this bridge are changing their lives for the better! So you have a wonderful opportunity to try on a legend.

The brick cathedral itself was built by the prominent Finnish architect Stenbek in 1897. This religious building is visible from afar because of its high tower - the bell tower. The church belongs to the Lutheran confession, therefore the interior decoration is rather modest. The entire interior is made of wood. Gilding chandeliers and a magnificent organ, whose sound is simply divine, amaze with their beauty! It is also worth taking a closer look at the altar, in the center of which is the canvas of the Finnish painter Pekka Halonena, written in 1899. Entrance to the cathedral is free, time for visiting tourists: from 10.00 to 18.00 hours.

Parish church / Mikkelin maaseurakunnan kirkko

Another place of worship that locals are proud of is located at Otavankatu 9. Street. The size of this wooden church is impressive (2000 parishioners can fit at one time), it is not for nothing that it is considered to be the third largest in Finland. Huge columns give the temple a magnificent appearance. The altar, with the canvas of the crucified Jesus, is an exact copy of the painting by the artist Pudhoni exhibited in the French Louvre.

A chic antique organ mounted on a special balcony stands out for its gilded finish. All the windows in the temple are decorated with intricate wood carvings, where each ornament is crowned with a cross.

Unfortunately, all this beauty can be seen only in the summer, since it is at this time of year that the temple is accessible for visiting curious tourists. Incidentally - completely free.
