  • New Year Tours  around the world

Rhodes is one of the largest and most fertile islands in Greece. He is one of the most visited due to the fact that here every tourist will find something to his taste. Great beaches? You are welcome. Archaeological sites? As much as you like. Medieval ancient cities with narrow streets, souvenir shops and seaside promenades? Yes, and yes again. The climate of Rhodes is especially good, during the season the weather is usually mild and cloudless: the sun shines here for more than 300 days a year.

Rhodes officially belongs to the Dodecanese archipelago, but because of its size and independent importance, it is always considered separately. Historians still argue about the name of the island: either it came from the word "rose" (there are many stone roses in Rhodes), or from the word "red". The north coast is known for its lively tourist resorts, the south coast is calmer, and life is slower.

Most of the beaches of Rhodes are pebble, they are clean, beautiful and great for swimming - including with children. The only negative is that there are a lot of tourists on the island during the season. But here you can find the positive aspects: the service staff speaks almost everywhere, at least in English and German, and even in Swedish, Finnish and Russian.

Regions and resorts of Rhodes

Despite its relatively small size (only 30-40 km wide), there are a variety of beaches and resorts in Rhodes, where it will be equally good to rest both inveterate extremals and sedate retirees.

In the very north of the island is the ancient capital - the brilliant city of Rhodes, the birthplace of the Colossus of Rhodes, the Palace of the Grand Masters and a whole placer of unique attractions.

Inside the island, only a couple of places attract attention: Archangelos - the second largest city after the capital, Askilipio with its fortress, Monolithos castle, as well as the small settlement of Laerma, next to which is the monastery of the Archangel Michael - the largest in Rhodes.

Stops on the roads are indicated, but waving the driver does not hurt, as well as informing you that you need to get off. In large resorts there are several stops at once (as many as three in Faliraki), it is not necessary to go to the first one, but it is better to check in advance.

Taxi

Taxis are a good way to not only get from point A to point B, but also to explore the surroundings if you do not like group tours for some reason, and the tourist does not want to drive a car or motorcycle. For example, a one-way trip from Rhodes to the acropolis in Lindos costs EUR 35-50, plus EUR 20 waiting for a taxi driver on the spot while sightseers walk up. You can drive to Faliraki from the capital for about 11-14 EUR. The minimum city fare is 5 EUR, luggage is paid separately - 0.6 EUR per suitcase.

Motorcycle and bicycle rentals

It is better to take a bicycle only for trips around the resort, you can travel outside the villages, the roadside is wide enough, but the drivers here are dashing, the sun is merciless, and the hills are steep. The cost of renting a mountain bike is from 20 EUR per day.

A motorcycle in this regard is a much better option, although it will not allow pumping caviar and thigh muscles to envious sighs on the beach. The price of the issue is from 25 EUR per moped, from 50 to 70 EUR per day - per motorcycle.

Cafes and Restaurants in Rhodes

Being a tourist island, living for the most part at the spa, Rhodes is filled with all sorts of catering establishments - from typically English pubs to the most traditional Greek taverns. Moreover, the quality is often everywhere at the level - no one seeks to fool tourists by passing a thin red mullet over tuna. Portions are on the conscience, and the quality of the food is on top.

The largest selection of restaurants is in the capital, and if you look closely, you can always see local ones at the tables, which indicates the quality of the establishment. In second place in the number of cafes and bars are large resorts - Faliraki and Lindos. You can easily find a pretty tavern even on the relatively sparsely populated west coast of Rhodes. What to order? In Greece, and Rhodes is no exception, traditionally popular dishes of fish, fresh vegetables and dairy products. However, meat lovers should not be upset - they cook a good lamb shank so that you lick your fingers.

The average cost of a dinner for two with wine or beer is from 30 EUR and above. Snack on the run - from 5 to 10 EUR. Fresh fish (morning catch) in a tavern or fish restaurant depends on the class - for the first grade they will ask about 50 EUR per kg, for flake of the second grade, smaller (but no less tasty) - from 35 EUR.

Lurking in its capital is the city of the same name, not only the birthplace of the Colossus of Rhodes, but also a host of monuments from the ancient Greek period to the Middle Ages. In short, this is the Palace of the Grand Masters, powerful fortress walls, a colorful port with boats of all stripes and the so-called “Knights Street”, as well as a couple of worthy museums telling about the complicated but exciting history of the island.

The ancient Lindos competes with Rhodes, where it is located, perhaps, the second most impressive after the Athenian ancient Acropolis on the top of the mountain. Echoed to him and the Byzantine church of St. John, and the ancient temple of Athena of Lindia. If fantasy longs for something massive, it is worth visiting the magnificent Monolith castle - the medieval castle of the Johannites on top of a steep cliff. There is the chapel of St. Panteleimon of the 15th century, and at the foot of the cliff you can buy healing Rhodes honey, homemade olive oil and a traditional “suma” - moonshine made from grapes. Located in an exceptionally idyllic countryside, Lindos provides a sense of the archaic lifestyle of the island that is no longer found in resorts or in a capital city.

The Valley of the Butterflies is responsible for the natural beauty of the island - a spectacle that cannot be described, especially in the season when it is filled with thousands of insects of all colors and sizes, fluttering around the stunned tourists from Russian stone “jungle”.

In addition, you can go to the ancient city of Kamiros, which has retained its layout from ancient times. The unique water supply system and the mysterious death of the city attract here not only tourists, but also researchers of the history of ancient Greece. Another popular route point is the winery village of Embona, where you can taste the best Rhodes wines, as well as have a tasty lunch in the village tavern.

One cannot but mention the Valley of the Seven Springs with its marked trails through picturesque forests that give coolness even on the hottest summer day, or Filerimos Hill, where tourists can find ancient ruins, and an old monastery with a modest but exceptionally beautiful chapel and stunning views of the north islands.

The place with the romantic name "kiss of two seas" - Prasonisi. This sandy spit connects the two islands, Rhodes and Prasonisi, where on one side there is a quiet dark blue Mediterranean Sea, and the other is a restless turquoise Aegean.

5    things to do in Rhodes

  1. Atone for the 7 deadly sins by bathing in the cold-burning Epta-Piges Valley of 7 springs.
  2. Climb up the Tsambika hill to the monastery of the same name, where the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary is located, helping childless families.
  3. Try to count a thousand butterflies in a colorful valley, stray, spit on everything and just enjoy the view of the trembling flapping of hundreds of thousands of wings.
  4. See the “kiss” of two seas - the Aegean and the Mediterranean - in the town of Prasonisi.
  5. Climb to the most dizzying place accessible to tourists in Rhodes - Mount Filerimos, the top of which is crowned with a large cross.

Leisure

Most of the entertainment in Rhodes is related to the beach and the sea. Moreover, the lion's share of these funs (from parasailing to canoeing) can be found in Faliraki, unless, of course, you are mentally prepared to endure the crowds of beach people. For wind and kite surfing, it is better to go to the southern point of Rhodes, in Prasonisi, which is deservedly called the "paradise for surfers."

Fishermen in Rhodes are also happy: here you don’t even need to buy a license to throw a fishing rod into the sea. The best places are at Kamiros, in Kallithea and Lindos. You can even agree with one of the fishing schooners, which are fully moored opposite the gates of St. Katerina in the capital. With pleasure and for a small fee, they catch tourist fishermen with them, but departure, as a rule, early in the morning. Other popular sports include yachting, tennis and golf (Afandou village has a large field).

Rhodes for children

Rhodes is a great place to relax with children, many local hotels are specially “tailored” for family tourists: in addition to the children's menu, pools and large rooms, they offer babysitting services and, of course, animation. Outside hotel complexes, there are no less entertainments - these are all kinds of water sports on the beaches, and one of the largest water parks in Greece, the Water Park (off site), located in Faliraki, and the no less large Fantasia amusement park, again at 5 minutes from Faliraki.

Not far from the capital, in the village of Petaloudes, is the Butterfly Valley - a charming place inhabited by thousands of winged insects. Nearby is an ostrich farm and partly a small zoo with camels, deer, donkeys and goats. Directly in the capital, you should look into the aquarium with sea turtles, octopuses and mollusks, as well as take a walk around the Rodini Park

Where is it better to relax in Rhodes with children, together or a fun company? Where to stay in Rhodes near a good beach or medieval buildings? Where to relax in Rhodes to combine a beach holiday with a cultural holiday? Today's article will help you decide where it is best for you to relax in Rhodes, depending on the purpose of your trip. We will take a closer look at the areas, cities and resorts of the island of Rhodes, mark them on a map of Greece, recommend hotels and together look at beautiful photos of these places.

Where better to relax in Rhodes, Greece: we analyze the cities and resorts of the island

  Rhodes city: knights, Turks, antiquities

The city of Rhodes is perhaps the most convenient place on the island in every way. With this, our review of "where better to relax in Rhodes" is over.

Joke 🙂 But seriously, the city of Rhodes has served as the capital of the island for nearly 2.5 millennia, and that says a lot. It is here - the main historical attractions of the island, it was here that the Colossus of Rhodes stood, it was here that the famous Rhodes fortress, the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Masters were built. In addition, there is a huge number of hotels, clubs and restaurants for every taste and budget, from here you can leave by public transport to almost all cities and areas of Rhodes and it is just very nice to live and walk here. And also the main shopping street of the city of Rhodes (Socrates street) is a real corner of ancient Turkey with nice Ottoman mansions of the 18th-19th centuries. At the same time, Rhodes is a small city, it is quite possible to get around on foot. We ourselves in Rhodes stopped in the capital of the island and we also recommend it to you.

The beaches of Rhodes are also good, although inferior in beauty. It is at the northern tip of the city of Rhodes, next to the local aquarium, that two seas meet - the Aegean on the left and the Mediterranean on the right. On calm summer days it is very interesting to watch them: on the left - almost all the time the waves, while on the right the water is calm, like a mirror. Accordingly, it is more convenient to swim on the Mediterranean part of the city beach.

If you are looking for where to relax in Rhodes and want to combine a beach holiday with a cultural holiday, pay attention to the island's capital. The city of Rhodes is a place where medieval buildings are well preserved, and it is always fun here.

  Kallithea: beautiful view and golden hands

Kallithea on Rhodes (not to be confused with Kallithea on the Halkidiki Peninsula!) Is a resort located on an excellent beach on the Mediterranean coast, 8 km from the island's capital. Actually kallithea resort consists of three villages: Kallithea, Koskinu and Psintos. The word "Kallithea" is translated as "beautiful view", and the village fully justifies its name: from ancient times, local residents decorated their houses with various patterns, which makes this place very colorful. Well, the sea landscapes here are also, of course, excellent.

In addition to the pretty beach, the main attraction of Kallithea is the ancient baths. They existed in the time of the ancient Greeks, and have recently been restored and are now receiving visitors again. And the village of Koskinu is one of the main centers of crafts in Rhodes, here you can buy excellent souvenirs.

Kallithea is a small resort where lovers of a “traditional” beach holiday are worth a vacation in Rhodes.

  Faliraki: the epicenter of parties and package tourism

The village of Faliraki and hotels along the beach of the same name is perhaps the most popular place among party-goers and lovers of fun, as well as families with children and Russian package tourists. If you are traveling to Rhodes not on your own, but through a tour operator, most likely you will be offered a hotel right on the beach of Faliraki. This is the longest beach of Rhodes, it stretches along the eastern (Mediterranean) coast of the island for almost 5 kilometers.

Faliraki beach is very picturesque. Covered with golden sand, the entrance to the water is comfortable and smooth, for this, tourists with children love him. There are several areas with swing-carousels. The beach has everything you can from tennis courts and volleyball courts to jet ski rentals and banana rides. And of course, a lot of night clubs, bars and discos. There are hotels for every taste and budget, including huge hotel complexes operating on an all-inclusive basis. In the village of Faliraki is one of the best water parks in Greece.

The only complaint to the resort of Faliraki is that, in addition to swimming and entertainment, there is nothing special to do here. And although public transport can take you directly to many of the island's attractions, it can be a long way from most hotels to the bus stop. Car rental can help solve the problem - there are several car rental locations in Faliraki. Also in Rhodes, you can rent a car via the Internet, on the website Rentalcars.com .

Not all resorts in Rhodes can boast such a developed infrastructure as Faliraki. But there are practically no historical sights here.

  Afandou: by the long deserted beach

The village of Afandou (or Afantou) is located on the beach of the same name, one of the longest on the island. The entrance to the sea here is not as smooth as on Faliraki, the depth begins quite quickly, and elevation changes occur. There is entertainment for every taste, including excellent golf courses, but at the same time there is an atmosphere of calm and measured. Afandou is not as popular as the nearby Faliraki, so there is always plenty of space on this beach. There are also all-inclusive hotels here.

Where is it better to relax in Rhodes, so that entertainment is at hand, and a little people? One of the great options is Afandou village.

  Kolymbia: a young tranquil resort

Kolymbia is another young resort and at the same time a calm, secluded corner of Rhodes. It is located 25 km south of the island’s capital at the foot of the beautiful Tsambika mountain (aka Tsambika). Pay attention to Kolimbia if you are looking for a place to relax on Rhodes with your child: the local beach is covered with coarse sand and small pebbles, the entrance to the sea is gentle, swimming here is a real pleasure. And from here you can quickly take a taxi or public transport to (the most beautiful on the island) and the city of Archangelos, which is famous for its souvenirs and handmade ceramics.

Kolymbia is a fairly young resort, where lovers of a calm measured rest should stay in Rhodes.

Stegna and Archangelos:  a city of craftsmen near a wide beach

The resort village of Stegna is literally a couple of streets along the sandy beach of the same name, stretching for a kilometer along the Mediterranean Sea. The beach is quite wide, the entrance to the water is comfortable, gentle. Stegna is literally created for lovers of a relaxing holiday, pacification reigns here, nightclubs and other noisy party places are not in sight. The mountains close Stegna from the winds on both sides, so the water here is calm, waves are very rare. And within a few minutes walk is the already mentioned “city of craftsmen” Archangelos, which sells excellent handmade souvenirs. By the way, Archangelos is the second largest city of Rhodes, there are many shops and excellent restaurants, as well as very beautiful streets with colorful houses, many of which have turned into cozy hotels.

Where better to relax in Rhodes, Greece: the village of Archangelos is buried in flowers and fruit trees, and many of the local houses have turned into excellent hotels.

  Lindos: an ancient fortress and a "children's" beach

Lindos is a beautiful town in the southeast of Rhodes. The resort is located at the foot of the mountain, on which the ruins of the ancient city of Lindos flaunt, and from the top offers stunning views of the bay and the surrounding area.

Lindos is a great choice if you are looking for a place to relax with your child in Rhodes. Firstly, the local beach is not only very beautiful - it is also quite shallow, the bottom is shallow, the entrance to the water is convenient. Secondly, many local hotels (including those operating on the all-inclusive system) are aimed at tourists with children, there are playgrounds and animators. Lindos will also like lovers of historical sights - in addition to the ruins of a knight's fortress, there are several ancient temples. But lovers of diving and supporters of a relaxing holiday may like it less - the sea, as already mentioned, is rather shallow here, and there is always a children's screech in the ears with a rare break for a quiet hour. For us, this was the only, but serious drawback of Lindos, so one visit here was enough for us. But many tourists adore Lindos and relax here every year, so everything is subjective.

Where is it better to relax with children in Rhodes? Lindos is perhaps the best place to relax with a child, primarily due to the shallow sandy beach and interesting antiquities.

  Pefki Rhodes: a village in a pine grove

Pefki Rhodes (or Pefkos) is a resort village located near Lindos about fifty kilometers from the island's capital. Its name is translated from Greek as “pine”, there are really many trees here, so the air here is just magical. The beaches here are sandy, with a very gentle entrance - the depth begins after a few tens of meters. In general, there are already four such beaches in Pefki with an ideal entrance and clear water, so this village is one of those places where it is better to relax with children in Rhodes. There are many cafes, restaurants and shops in Pefki, but besides swimming in the sea and walking along the local streets, there’s nothing to do here. Therefore, many tourists often go for a walk in Lindos - fortunately, it is not far away.

Near Pefki there is another resort village - Lardos. The quiet and cozy center of Lardos is built up with inexpensive hotels and restaurants, located near the beach of the same name, over which the blue flag proudly blows. Lardos Beach - sand and gravel, very comfortable for swimming. In general, Lardos is practically no different from neighboring Pefkos, except for the name.

Pefki Rhodes is one of those places where in Rhodes the sandy beaches are combined with a relaxing holiday. But if you want civilization, from this village you can easily get to Lindos.

  Gennadi: secluded relaxation away from civilization

Gennadi is a relatively new resort located 65 km from the main city of Rhodes. This place is loved by lovers of a quiet relaxing holiday and surfers, and the local beaches are virgin and almost deserted. Gennadi is a place where rest in Rhodes is for lovers of solitude away from noise and civilization. There are only a few streets, several shops, several restaurants and several hotels. Very nice and quiet place.

Where is it better to relax in Rhodes for lovers of solitude and pristine beaches? Gennadi village is ideal for a vacation away from civilization.

  Ialyssos and Ixia: a paradise for windsurfers and fun lovers

Ialysos (aka Lissos, aka Galissas), Ixia (aka Ixia) are two neighboring villages on the west coast of Rhodes, located near the island's capital. We can say that Ialyssos and Ixia are generally one settlement, since the border between the villages is very arbitrary. These villages are located near a beautiful beach on the Aegean Sea. The entertainment infrastructure here is no worse developed than in Faliraki: there are many nightclubs, bars and restaurants, and the coast is built up with hotel complexes, where there is everything for a comfortable stay.

The villages of Ialyssos and Ixia are popular among lovers of active beach holidays, as well as windsurferswho often organize colorful competitions here ..

The only thing that scared us a bit was the various rumors about the refugees who flooded Greece. But there are no refugees in Rhodes. Absolutely. So the rest there is quite safe.

So, we usually booked a trip through a travel agency and, knowing that we did not have to sit still, we didn’t bother with choosing a hotel, choosing the most attractive small hotel from those proposed by the tour operator ( i will write about the hotel separately).

The flight from Krasnodar to Rhodes took 2 hours, flying over two seas and over Turkey (Rhodes a few miles from the Turkish coast), at the Rhodes airport all the procedures went very quickly, the airport itself was small, and there were not very many people. But there are a lot of Russian tourists in Rhodes, from most of them I heard sad conversations that "Turkey was closed, Egypt was closed, where should we go to the poor, only Greece remained from a budget holiday."

What to do in Rhodes

The week was quite eventful:

1st day: arrived in the afternoon, settled very quickly, then went to get acquainted with the city, shops, beaches;

> Review of Faliraki Resort

2nd day: beach vacation, went swimming and sunbathing in one of the most beautiful bays of the island - Ladiko Bay;

3rd day: we went to Rhodes on our own, having received a lot of impressions, in the evening - the beach;

4th day: a sightseeing tour (from a tour operator) in Rhodes - for the whole day we traveled around the island along the entire perimeter along the entire coast, stopping at some attractions;

> Review of a sightseeing tour of Rhodes

> A Tale of a Traditional Greek House and Tasting

5th day: again we devoted the whole day to a beach vacation - this time in the bay of Anthony Quina;

6th day: an independent excursion to Lindos is unforgettable, in the evening - again the beach;

7th day: an independent trip to seven sources and in the evening - buying souvenirs (although there was already a full bag of purchases after the excursions);

> A story about a trip to 7 sources

We had a departure early in the morning on the 8th day.

Impressions of Rhodes. Is it worth the ride.

The island of Rhodes is really very beautiful, but after our black soil, light (sandy-stony) scorched earth and an abundance of unfinished hotels, buildings at first created the impression that you are on a construction site. However, this impression quickly disappears. The vegetation is not very dense, but there are many flowers - bright, large, many fruit trees, olive groves, vineyards. Something nature reminded me of our Taman or the eastern coast of Crimea, but only more and more vibrant and exotic.

Do not believe those who write about the "affectionate" Rhodes sun. No wonder the island is considered the estate of the sun god - Helios: according to legend, when Zeus divided the lands between the gods, Helios was busy with his main business - he lit the Earth, and did not have time to distribute, therefore, when he complained to Zeus that he was left with nothing, he suggested choose him any piece of land. Helios chose the most beautiful island - Rhodes. Of course, he bestows his patrimony with rays, and the sun (in any case, July) is simply merciless to reckless tourists. It is especially deceiving on the shore, as a light cooling breeze blows from the sea, and you just don’t feel that you are slowly frying. Even creams do not really save, we decently burned on the first day, and this despite the fact that the Kuban sun is too hot too, so you should be very careful. Creams for tanning, for tanning, after tanning are sold at every step, but are not cheap - from 7 to 20 euros on average. But the cream is also not a panacea - it will not save from the direct rays of the hot midday sun, it is better to be in the shade on the beach - under umbrellas.

The island is washed by two seas - the Mediterranean and the Aegean. The eastern coast, washed by the Mediterranean Sea, and its northern part, is considered as a resort. There are beautiful sandy and pebble beaches, bays, many hotels. The western side of the island is washed by a very stormy Aegean sea, it is windy, the coast is rocky, and the temperature is a couple of degrees lower than on the east coast. There are practically no hotels here, but the vegetation is more dense, green. Many olive plantations and vineyards. Whereas in the eastern part people live mainly through tourism, then in the western part - also from agriculture.

Review of Faliraki Resort

There is no industry on the island at all, so the water in Rhodes is considered the cleanest in Europe. The island fully provides itself with electricity (mainly solar energy) and fresh drinking water. It’s hard to die of thirst here. I liked that at almost every step there are taps with clean drinking water. Slightly lower the warm water, substitute the bottle - and here you have cool drinking water.

There are several attractions on the island, including those included in the UNESCO World Heritage List: the Old Town in Rhodes and the Palace of the Grand Masters. There are also ancient monuments: in Lindos there is the second largest Acropolis after Athens in size and size, and Lindos itself with its narrow white streets is unique and is protected by UNESCO.

> More details of what tours are offered in Rhodes

That which is protected by UNESCO is in good condition, but some of the sights in a rather deplorable form are “waiting for investors”. This phrase: “investors are waiting,” we heard very often. It seems that it’s even convenient for the Greeks to blame everything on the crisis. And the crisis is really felt here - there are a lot of unfinished or abandoned hotels, restaurants, etc. In addition, the fly in the ointment was that the island is rather dirty. That is, no one removes trash on the streets. At all. Empty bottles, pieces of paper, bags - all along the roads, on the roadsides, near yards, on city streets and even a few steps from expensive luxury hotels. We had this, probably, only in the most “tight” 90s. We concluded that there is no concept of public services in Rhodes, but at least you can clean it near your yards, because all the land on the island is someone else's. The only exception is the beaches. It is really clean there, beach workers clean, take care of cleanliness.

The composition of the vacationers is very varied: in addition to the Greeks from mainland Greece and Russo Turisto, there are many Germans (how they tolerate this heat!), French, Italians. I want to say separately about the latter - if more than two Italians gather somewhere (in a bus, in a restaurant, in a pool or in a store), it seems that there are ONLY Italians: they make noise, scream, wave their arms, they can scream at the whole bus communicating from the front rows with the back rows. I admit, by the end of the vacation, only when I saw the Italians, I immediately wondered: why didn’t they sit in Italy, because there are the same islands, the same climate and the same Mediterranean Sea.

The food in Greece is very tasty, plentiful, a lot of meat and vegetables, of course, everything is consumed with olive oil and wine. Delicious dairy products and fruits. Even living in the south of our country, having tasted Rhodes oranges from a branch, I realized that what they sell in our stores is not oranges, but a miserable likeness. Very sweet and tasty figs, it grows here everywhere, but unfortunately it is still green, although it is ripe.

> About our gastronomic adventures

And finally, I will say a few words about the local population. Greeks are very beautiful and friendly people. Both Greeks and Greek women are beautiful. They smile a lot, almost everyone knows at least a few basic words in Russian (and in some hotels and shops they speak quite well “great and mighty”) and speak English fairly well, so there were no language problems at all, although I don’t know Greek, except for the three words "politeness." The Greeks understand that tourists are the only source of their income, therefore they are very welcoming, friendly. But at the same time they are leisurely, a little optional, non-punctual, relaxed and not particularly tense. Europe is blamed for all its troubles and is waiting for someone to help them. To be honest, it's hard to imagine that these are the descendants of those great Hellenes who were at the forefront of democracy and modern European civilization (although the same can be said of Italians, who are so unlike my ideas about the Romans of the empire).

In general, despite some disadvantages, and there are enough of them in any country, because nothing can be ideal, we liked the rest in Rhodes, we returned full of positive. The week was extremely eventful, vibrant, and everywhere the sounding Greek music and the surrounding views, which fully correspond to the stereotypical ideas about Greece: olive groves with freely walking goats create the necessary surroundings and unique color.

So Rhodes put a solid four with a plus and recommend at least once to go there. Lovers of beach holidays, and lovers of outdoor activities, and, of course, those who like to discover something new, visit sights and expand their horizons will like it.

"Sunny Rhodes, I want to sing your beaches in poetry ..." No, this is not a quote from ancient poetry. But the speech itself is tuned to a magnificent hexameter: is it possible to describe in simple words the coast of the island, which, according to myths, was created by the sun god Helios?

From June to October, hundreds of thousands of tourists enjoy the summer warmth on the beaches of Rhodes.

Fortunately, the beaches of Rhodes stretch for 220 km, so there is enough space for everyone. Someone loves tiny bays away from noise, and someone chooses a spacious and comfortable beach closer to hotels and entertainment.

Some like the sandy beach, while others like the pebble. Someone is glad of the opportunity to lazily lie on the sand, while others are in love with outdoor activities. All this is in Rhodes: which beaches do you prefer? Our review is dedicated to the best places for families with children - choose what you like.

The best beaches of Rhodes

To begin with, it is a fact: more than 400 beaches of Greece annually receive a “blue flag” for the cleanliness of the coast and the safety of recreation. Among them are the best beaches of the island of Rhodes. However, simply “good” beaches are usually just as clean and comfortable as they deserve a high award.

The municipality controls the coast of Rhodes, so admission to all beaches is free. But for the use of infrastructure - umbrellas and sunbeds - you must pay. Hotels are often landscaped along the coast, creating comfortable conditions for their guests.

Note that the infrastructure of the beaches on the island of Rhodes includes not only sun loungers and umbrellas. Spacious sections of the coast often feature sports and playgrounds, and water activities are offered almost everywhere.

Large beaches are equipped with showers and toilets. All blue flag beaches have a rescue and medical service.

The beaches of the Mediterranean coast are better equipped - simply because most tourists who come to Rhodes for a relaxing holiday are located there.

Windsurfers who prefer the coast of the Aegean Sea are less concerned about sunbeds: they are interested in the availability of surfing stations and the ability to rent professional equipment. And yet there are well-maintained beaches on the Aegean Sea.

You can conveniently sit on the shore to watch the brave conquerors of the waves.

Sand or Pebble

Rhodes is so benevolent to tourists that it offers beaches for every taste. On the Mediterranean coast, sand alternates with pebbles - these are the most convenient beaches for families with children.

The coast of the Aegean Sea is covered mainly with large pebbles, although there are also sandy areas. There are rocky beaches, unsuitable for recreation, but serve as a spectacular backdrop for photo shoots.

In fact, answering the question of where are the best beaches in Rhodes is very difficult. The difficulty is that there are no perfect beaches on the island.. Some are covered with soft sand and well equipped, but are crowded in high season.

Others are picturesque and not crowded, but are removed from places of rest. Still others would be a wonderful place to relax with children, but you need to go down to them along a rocky path.

Fourth are good for everyone, but the depth starting at the shore prevents swimming with the baby. However, the disadvantages must be taken into account, but not concentrated on them: the advantages of beaches play a more important role.

In our review, we described in detail all the beaches of Rhodes - it will be easy for you to decide where you want to relax.

The best beaches in Rhodes for children

You have probably already looked at the most popular resorts of Rhodes, exploring the sights and hotels. But what beach will be nearby is equally important for families with children.

As a rule, to relax with the kids choose a sandy beach with a gentle entrance to the water. These conditions can boast beaches of Ladiko, Kolymbia, Tsambika, Stegna, Agia Agatha, Lindos.Among them, the most convenient are Kolymbia and Stegna - due to the fact that they are located next to the hotels. The rest of the beaches are in secluded places, and you have to get to the coast by car.

The sand and pebble beaches of Faliraki and Kiotari are also good for families with children. The coast of Faliraki, despite the congestion, may well qualify for the title of the best Rhodes beach for children.

Firstly, you don’t have to go to the sea by car and go down the cliffs. Secondly, next to the beach is a luxurious water park.

If you prefer a pebble beach, then look at the beaches for children in Kallithea and in the city of Rhodes. The Rhodes beach is always lively, but among the bays of Kallithea it is easy to find a quiet place even in high season.

There are no very large pebbles on these beaches, but you should still take care of safety shoes.

Mediterranean Sea

When you start looking for the beaches of Rhodes on the map, you will immediately notice that almost all of them are on the east coast. The Mediterranean Sea, which washes the island from the east, is very calm and warm - in contrast to the Aegean, whose windsurfing nature is appreciated by the windsurfing.

The beaches of the Mediterranean Sea have several advantages:

  • warm water - in the summer months, the sea temperature is + 24-26 ° C, and in shallow water it rises to + 28 ° C;
  • calm sea - the storm rarely rises, and to the beaches located in the bays, the waves do not reach at all;
  • a shallow bottom - if a child likes water to reach only his ankles or to his knees, then he will be just right on many beaches of Rhodes;
  • transparent water - pebbles at the bottom can be seen through the water column (and on those beaches where the bottom is rocky in places, it is easy to choose a convenient place for swimming);
  • a large number of entertainments - water sports, attractions, and on the beaches next to family hotels there are also playgrounds;
  • a variety of beaches - sandy and pebble, spacious and tiny, noisy and secluded.

At the same time, not every section of the coast is suitable for families with small children. We offer you to explore the best beaches of Rhodes on the Mediterranean Sea, from the northern to the southern tip of the island, and at the same time get acquainted with this amazing island.

List of beaches

Ellie beach

One of the most popular beaches in Rhodes is located in the north of the island. It is worth taking some 300 steps to the west, and you will find yourself on the shores of the Aegean Sea.

But in order to buy it off, prefer to stay on the beach of Ellie, washed by the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The pebbled coast is very wide, in places its width reaches 35 meters.

The beach infrastructure deserves all praise: it is pleasant, comfortable, fun to relax here. The good location of the beach has a downside - there are always a lot of tourists.

But as soon as you get tired of the crowding on the shore, you can go with the children to the Aquarium or the Archaeological Museum (these attractions are located near the beach).

The beaches of Faliraki

One of the longest, most beautiful, most lively, most comfortable beaches of Rhodes is located in the resort of Faliraki. A wide sand strip stretches for 4 km. Pebble plots are found at the edge of the sea, but the bottom is sandy and flat everywhere.

The best conditions for a holiday with a child can not be imagined, with one caveat: in the high season on the coast of Faliraki there is no place to drop an apple. In order not to win a place in the sun, it is most convenient to choose a hotel with a private beach for living.

Pay attention to family hotels that have equipped a place for children’s games on the shore.

Hotels near Faliraki Beach:

On the beach there is a lot of entertainment for every taste, in addition, next to it is one of the largest water parks in Europe. The main plus of the water park is a huge entertainment area for children.

Note that the neighboring cozy beaches - Kallithea, Anthony Quinn - are often ranked among the beaches of Faliraki. But they deserve a separate story.

Kallithea

The resort of Kallithea adjoins Faliraki from the north. The nature of the coastline here changes dramatically: instead of a spacious beach strip - small bays surrounded by cliffs. The coast here is covered with pebbles, the entrance to the water is quite gentle.

As a rule, the beaches belong to hotels that care about the cleanliness and landscaping of the coast. And the cleanliness here is really at the highest level - it is not in vain that the resort has been winning the “blue flag” from year to year.

Some beaches have a developed infrastructure for outdoor activities, others are suitable for lying quietly in the sun.

Anthony Queen, Rhodes

A quiet bay near the southern tip of Faliraki asks for a photo. The best photos are taken from the sea - pleasure yachts enter the bay.

Although the coast is picturesque, it is not very convenient for relaxing with a child: the sandy strip is narrow and small, and part of the sun loungers is located directly on the rocks descending to the sea. But snorkelling enthusiasts will appreciate this place - underwater beauty begins right near the shore.

Ladiko

Ladiko Bay is just a few hundred meters from Anthony Quinn. Landscaped areas are located on opposite sides of the bay - for recreation with children, we recommend choosing the sandy southern part of the coast.

You will have to go down to the beach along a mountain path, but then you will find yourself in a calm backwater, where the sea barely sways. The beach is quite far from the nearest hotels. For those who travel to the sea by car, parking is provided in the shade of trees.

Afandou

Afandou village is located off the coast, but it is not necessary to go to the beach on foot - a tourist train will take you to the sea in 5 minutes. The beach of the village stretches for almost 5 km, while the coastal strip is quite narrow.

The coast in Afanda is pebbled, the bottom goes down quite quickly, so the beach is suitable for families with children who swim well. There is a water sports center on the beach where you can learn the basics of windsurfing and water skiing.

However, if you want to simply sunbathe, Afanda will delight you with its landscaping. The cleanliness and safety of this beach has been repeatedly confirmed by the “blue flag”.

Kolymbia beach

The resort village of Kolymbia is a very popular family vacation spot.  The calm atmosphere, and the abundance of greenery, and the long beach play a role here. The coast in Kolymbia is not very wide, but a convenient recreation area is created near each hotel.

Parents with kids will appreciate the sandy beach with a gentle approach to the sea, and absolutely everyone will like the absence of crowds of vacationers. A blue flag flies over the coast of Kolymbia, a well-deserved reward for a high level of environmental safety.

Please note that at the southern end of the beach, pebbles begin, and the bottom drops quite sharply.

Tsambika

This beach is separated from Kolymbia by a rocky cape, behind which again begins a long and rather wide sandy strip. The sea off the coast of Tsambika is so clear and calm that even a fearful child will agree to enter the water.

The coast is very well equipped and, importantly, never crowded. The TsambikosWatersports Water Sports Center offers you to learn water skiing and wakeboarding and have fun with the whole family in the water park, whose attractions are located right at sea.

The only drawback is the remoteness of hotels from the beach. As a rule, on the coast of Tsambika they go to rest from Kolymbia. We advise you to pay attention to family hotels that are closest to the beach and also have swimming pools.

Stegna

A cozy bay with a sandy beach, a flat bottom and clear water - this is Stegna beach. From edge to edge of the bay, about 800 meters, and on the coastline there are areas equipped with sun loungers and places where you can sit right on the sand.

Hotels, apartments and restaurants lined the first line, but the beach is quite calm and not crowded. For families with children, this place is perfect.

Agia Agatha

You have to get to the picturesque bay of Agia Agata (or Agia Agati) by car - it is removed from the resorts. But the trip is worth it, because it is a great place to relax with children.

The wide coast is covered with fine sand, the bottom is flat, the sea is transparent - didn’t you imagine the ideal beach? Almost all the space along the sea is occupied by sunbeds, but you can get away from the surf line.

There is almost no entertainment on the beach, but children are ready to enjoy swimming in warm water and watching small crabs walking along the bottom.

The resort closest to the beach is Haraki. The coast in this resort village is covered with pebbles, so vacationers often migrate to the sand of Agia Agata.

Lindos

Lindos has something to brag about - here is the Acropolis, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, here preached St. Pavel, the fountain system built during the time of Byzantium was preserved here.

And the beaches of this resort are also among the attractions. More precisely, one of the beaches located in the tiny bay of St. Paul. It is almost completely enclosed by cliffs from the sea.

You have to go downstairs to the stairs and there are not many places to sunbathe, but photos on the beach are unique.

Another Lindos beach is located in a much more spacious bay. Most of the beach is equipped with sun loungers and parasols.

The coast covered with fine golden sand will be very pleasant for children - unless they prefer to spend all the time in the water. The sea in these places is very shallow, good swimmers will have to get to real depth for a long time.

Kiotari

In the summer months, there are a lot of people on Kiotari beach. Why be surprised - such a wide beach can not be found anywhere else in Rhodes. The coast at the resort is covered with coarse sand and small pebbles, therefore, even during active bathing, the water in the sea does not become cloudy.

Parents with children try to settle down in the central part of the beach, where there is a flat bottom. But for the sake of snorkeling it is worth moving closer to the rocks - there is a more interesting underwater world.

In addition to natural advantages,   Kitari is also well equipped: various bars, cafes, taverns with a special menu for children, playgrounds are available to vacationers.

Aegean Sea

The beaches of the Aegean are not as popular with tourists as the Mediterranean coast. The wind on the western coast of Rhodes is stronger, the water is colder, and the waves are higher: this is the character of the Aegean Sea. And yet there is reason to relax in such places.

If your family is one of those who value outdoor activities, then the western beaches of Rhodes will be a great place for wind and kitesurfing. Waves at sea are more suitable for professionals, but in the water sports centers they are also engaged with beginners.

The best beaches of Rhodes on the Aegean Sea are often awarded the “blue flag”. For holidays with children, the west coast is not recommended just because the beaches here are covered with large pebbles, and the bottom drops quite sharply.

Ialyssos

This is one of the most famous and popular beaches of the western part of the island. It is unlikely that you will enjoy swimming in the sea, but thanks to the constant wind on the sea and the waves, it can be considered an ideal place for windsurfing.

So if your family is fond of this sport, then you are here. Another plus in favor of Ialyssos is convenient transport links with nearby cities and towns.

Ixia

It is a sandy and pebble beach 5 km southwest of the city of Rhodes. Like the other beaches of the Aegean coast of the island, Ixia is a pebble beach, there are also often waves here, and we hardly recommend it for families with children.

Theologos

The beach of the village of Theologos, or Tholos, is one of the few on the west coast of Rhodes, in the high season filled with vacationers. The coast here is clean and safe for relaxation, which is confirmed by the “blue flag”.

The width of Theologos beach in Rhodes is quite small: on the equipped part of the coast, several rows of sun loungers barely fit. This beach is not suitable for families with children because of the large pebbles at the surf line and because of the constant unrest at sea. But kite and windsurfers will really like such conditions.

In the center of Surf & Kite, even children are taken to the board (if your child weighs more than 25 kg and is eager to conquer the wave, write it to classes with an instructor).

Rhodes Windsurfing

The beaches of Ixia, Ialysos and Kremasti, few consider as a place for reclining on the beach. Here tourists of a different category gather - those who like wind and waves. These beaches have large kite and windsurfing stations.

Windsurfer’s World Learning Center in Ixia has developed a program for children over 4 years old: children use equipment specifically designed for their age.

The Pro Center Rhodos in Ialysos is most suitable for professionals. A specialized spot for kitesurfers Air Riders has been created in Kremasti - a course for beginners can be completed in 3 lessons.

The largest windsurfing center, the Prasonisi Center, is located on the Prasonisi Peninsula in southern Rhodes. Despite the fact that the peninsula is washed by both seas, the weather here is more conducive to outdoor activities than to lazy pastime.

It is very convenient that the surfing season in Rhodes falls on June - September. You can well sunbathe on a quiet east coast, and go to the Aegean Sea for the sake of outdoor activities. Therefore, do not deny yourself

Rhodes beaches

The capital of the island is located on the border of two seas. The imposing Mediterranean Sea and the lively Aegean do not fight for fans: visit the east and west coasts and immediately understand where you like it.

In fine weather, you can relax on the well-maintained beaches washed by the Aegean Sea.

Blue Flag Beaches

The Blue Flag is a special reward. If you see a blue cloth on the beach with a white circle, inside which waves are drawn, then you can be sure that it is safe to relax here.

These are not just good beaches with a clean coast and clear water: the coast is annually checked for compliance with many criteria, including environmental safety, the absence of dangerous currents, the presence of showers and toilets, the work of the rescue service, the development of infrastructure, accessibility, etc.

Greece is usually among the top three countries receiving the most blue flags. Many Rhodes beaches are proud of this award. Their list is changing, but almost always the award goes to the beaches of Kallithea, Faliraki, Ladiko, Kolymbia, Afandou, Lindos, Kiotari on the Mediterranean Sea. The beaches of the Aegean coast are often also awarded the “blue flag”.

Awarding takes place on June 5, so that only at the beginning of the holiday season you can find out if the beach meets the highest quality criteria. But if the beach got the “blue flag” before, you can expect that he will again be awarded this insignia.

Meanwhile, you can sunbathe not only on the beach. To get saturated, take a look at. Have a nice trip!

One of the excellent resort places is the island of Rhodes. On the eastern side it is washed by the warm and calm Mediterranean Sea, and on the western Aegean Sea.

Many people gathered there often ask themselves: “Where is it better to relax in Rhodes?”, “Which place is more suitable for families with children?” And “Where is the best vacation in Crete or Rhodes?”.

All these questions will be revealed in this article.

Rhodes attracts tourists with its wide variety of outdoor activities, wonderful climate and rich vegetation. You can come here and have some fun, try the most delicious dish, or just spend time in private with nature and a lot of impressions.

The island will be interesting not only for adults, but also for kids, for whom there are playgrounds, water attractions and wonderful children's parks.

Where is it better to relax in Rhodes? There are many beautiful and attractive places on the island. The most popular are the towns:

  1. Kalitea;
  2. Faliraki
  3. Lindos;
  4. Yalysos;
  5. Kremasty;
  6. Prasonisi;
  7. Rhodes.

Fans of outdoor activities, fun nightlife, those who want to meet someone, travel alone and love to have fun, I would advise you to go to Rhodes or Faliraki.

Since there are many bars, clubs and discos, and on the seashore you can always meet noisy companies.

In summer, the beach is heavily populated, and you will not be bored. Opposite to these cities is Kalitea.

This town is suitable for those who are tired of constant noise and want to relax on the beach, enjoying the beautiful scenery of nature.

The only negative is the lack of entertainment here, but due to the fact that Kalitea is located near Rhodes, you can always go have fun, if you suddenly become bored.

If you are an athlete and want to acquire a skill in one of the professional sports such as windsurfing, then the village of Prasonisi or Ialysos is perfect for you.

There you can achieve the highest level in this sport.

If you want to wander through museums, excavations and find out the history of the island, the second most popular city will help you with this - Lindos.

The landscape of Lindos fascinates many, narrow streets, cafes, shops and benches on every corner, a small number of residential buildings and a huge number of attractions.

If the child is more than 7 years old, then of course it's all the same Lindos. Rich in its cultural heritage. Sightseeing: Butterfly Valley, Mount Felerimos, Ancient Cairo, Acropolis (second only to Athens), Temple of Athena Lydia and 7 springs.

All this will not only diversify and saturate your vacation with impressions, but also will interest your children. If the child is very small, then settlements with beaches and fine sand will suit you, such are located in the villages of Gennadi, Kiotari and pos. Pefkos.

Kids will have a great time near the Mediterranean Sea in Kolymbia, and school-age children in Kallithea, as there is a large water park.

In these cities there will always be entertainment suitable for any age of your child.
  In many cafes you can find a children's menu, as well as settle in hotels offering various games for children.

Many people choosing holidays on the islands often think about where it is better to relax in Rhodes or Crete. So, if we compare these 2 islands, we will see that in Rhodes the sea is warmer and the air temperature at night, but clouds are more common there.

In addition to the climate, each island can offer something interesting.

Some people like Crete, which just falls in love with visitors, while others like Rhodes and positive impressions, and only positive emotions associated with it.

It all depends on what kind of person you are and what kind of entertainment you prefer, but still they are both unique, luxurious in their nature and simply irreplaceable. Both there and there you will rest well, and you will not be bored there.

So far I have only been to Rhodes, but I really liked it there and again I want to return there, enjoy the beaches and go where I have not been. Everyone has their own taste, so you choose.
