Where to go on the Sparrow Hills. Sparrow Hills. On foot to the observation deck

The observation deck on the Sparrow Hills is perhaps the most famous observation point in Moscow. It can be reached by metro, having reached the Vorobyovy Gory station (the first car from the center) and having overcome a long ascent. Of course, you cannot compare it with the Caucasus, but on the average Russian scale it’s quite a mountain for yourself: 0) You can also get to the Universitet metro station - you won’t even have to overcome the ascent. . However, Muscovites usually get here, celebrating the weddings of their friends, and guests of the capital - on buses with excursions.

Across the river you can see the huge Luzhniki stadium. The opening ceremony of the 1980 Olympics was held at this stadium and Viktor Tsoi gave one of the last concerts. It is here that Spartak Moscow is holding home games now. On match days, you can find me on the A5 stand.

On the left hand rises a huge business complex

The 40-story Skyscrapers on Begovaya (on the right) are lost compared to the whopper City

On the right hand side you can see the building of the Academy of Sciences, the Vorobyovy Gory metro station on a two-tier bridge and the Shukhov TV tower.

All this develops into a wonderful panorama, which can be seen by clicking on the following photo.

On the left in the picture is a building under construction, dubbed "The Heart of Moscow" - a red lantern with several floors in it pulsates like a heart. Then you can see the already mentioned Moscow-City complex. A little to the right are barely visible at night - the skyscrapers on Begovaya and the bright lights of the Third Transport Ring. Next you can see the Stalin skyscraper of the hotel Ukraine. Between two smoking chimneys distinguish the needle of the Ostankino tower, at the second chimney the White House of the government. To the right of the famous house - a high-rise book on Kudrinskaya Square, better known as the house on Barrikadnaya. A little to the right and lower in the photo is the white candle of the bell tower of the Novodevichy Convent. The next vertical line visible to the eye is the powerful skyscraper of the Foreign Ministry building. In the center behind the large sports arena of Luzhniki, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the bell tower of the Ivan the Great Moscow Kremlin rise. True, it is already quite difficult to distinguish the bell tower at night. Another visible Stalin skyscraper from the Sparrow Hills is the skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya Embankment, it is slightly to the right of the stadium. In the right part of the picture is the slightly illuminated Shukhov Tower, known for the New Year's “Blue” lights and the already mentioned building of the Academy of Sciences. Below it is a bridge with a metro station, and in the right corner of the picture you can see the springboard arc. I think an attentive eye will find more familiar buildings. They say that even in the daytime, from here you can see the house in which Ravshan and Dzhamshut from Our Rashi repaired their first apartment in the very first season of the series ...

Not far from the observation deck, the Trinity Church of the Life-giving on the Sparrow Hills has settled down. The history of this church is connected with the village of Vorobyovo, which existed here already in the middle of the 15th century, by the name of which this area was named. The church miraculously managed to avoid the fate of many other Moscow churches in Soviet times. And to this day, she continues to delight everyone with a bell ringing, which in the evenings spreads over the slopes of the Moscow River.

And in front of the observation deck of the Sparrow Hills stands the main building of Moscow State University

This skyscraper was erected at the suggestion of Stalin in 1949-1953 by architects B. M. Iofan, L. V. Rudnev, S. E. Chernyshev, P. V. Abrosimov, A. F. Khryakov and V. N. Nasonov.

At the time of construction, the building was the highest in Moscow; its height, together with the spire, is 240 meters.

This is probably worth finishing the photo walk because the camera’s batteries and fingers quickly freeze on a winter night: 0) I hope in the future we will be able to continue the story of the Vorobyovy Gory and the Moscow State University with new photos.

How to get the Vorobyovy Gory on your own is the theme of this guidebook. The observation deck on the Sparrow Hills is located opposite the high-rise building of Moscow State University.

Vorobevy Gory the easiest way to get

We will not deny it is easiest to get to the observation deck by car. The site is located on Kosygin street. In the navigator you can put the address of the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity on the Sparrow Hills - st. Kosygina, d.30.

Sparrow Hills how to get on the subway

We propose to use the fastest and most economical version of “getting from point A to point B” for Moscow, that is, use the metro. And although young people are walking around the navigator with might and main, we are old-mode people, in Moscow we are guided by the map. In addition, the best half of the site’s team of authors is suffering from geographic cretinism and unfortunately explains to friends on the fingers and shows in photographs how to be at the right time in the right place.

The metro station closest to the observation deck is called Vorobyovy Gory, it is located on the red metro line.

There are two stations on this branch in the city center. Not far from the Kremlin is the Lenin Library station, and next to Red Square is the Okhotny Ryad station. From it to the Vorobyovy Gory station, the train runs 13 minutes, then about 20 minutes will have to go on foot.

Vorobyovy Gory how to get from the metro

We arrive at the Vorobyovy Gory station. There are two exits to the city.

We need an exit “to Kosygin street”. That is, in the direction where the springboard is located, the high-rise of Moscow State University.

View of the Vorobyovy Gory from the metro station "Vorobyovy Gory" residential building on Mosfilmovskaya street.

We are guided by the pointer:

The necessary signpost at the Vorobyovy Gory station.

We go up the escalator and go straight, find ourselves under the bridge.

We reach the end of the bridge, here the road forks, we need to the right.

Do not be alarmed if you see a blocking ribbon - it is not for pedestrians. Calmly raise the obstacle and move on. The tape and the travelers walking towards the observation deck are visible in the picture below.

Along the footpath

we reach the next fork.

Sidewalk to the observation deck of the Sparrow Hills.

Here we again keep to the right, the desired direction is indicated by an iron fence, in 2014 - yellow. Walking forward a bit, we see the fork again.

It seems that it doesn’t matter which path to follow, both will lead to the right place. The author of this opus, like a brave hero, went around, took to the left.

Sparrow Hills how to get through the park

On the way there are benches and picturesque pavilions.

A few meters after the wooden arbor on the left you will see a pond, it has a pair of panoramic balconies.

Then, right along the way, you will see the arbor again.

And another fork in the four roads. Be careful here! You need to turn sharply to the left, from the fork you can easily skip the desired asphalt path behind the trees and foliage.

In the picture there is an insidious fork, the roads diverge down to the right, hollow up to the left, the required upward left upward movement did not fall into the frame.

The road goes sharply upward, steps are visible in the distance.

A staircase leads to the observation deck of the Sparrow Hills.

I don’t know if the number of steps was specially adjusted, or it happened by chance, but there are exactly 100 of them!

“Now we will go up the mountain, and there we will breathe there” (c).

Climbing up, do not deny yourself the pleasure of going to the stele of Herzen and Ogaryov, she is a few meters from the upper step, a pointer leads to it. And we hurry on and soon we go out onto Kosygin Street.

We turn right and go further along the side alley.

The alley along Kosygin Street leads to the observation deck.

Sparrow Hills. On foot to the observation deck

After a few meters, the cable car appears. May 25, 2014 did not work. And by 2018, it was dismantled, replacing it with a modern one. So the photo below is a fact of history

Immediately after it, the desired object is visible.

A staircase leads to the observation deck of the Sparrow Hills.

From here we admire the panoramic view of Moscow from a height of 200 meters above sea level or 80 meters above the level of the Moscow River.

View of the Moscow Business Center from the Sparrow Hills.

The bridge is clearly visible from the observation deck, on its lower tier - the Vorobyovy Gory metro station, from where we just climbed.

   Photo from the site http://bestbridge.net/Eu/luzhneckii-metromost.html

On the left you will see the high-rise building of Moscow State University.

The building of Moscow State University on the Sparrow Hills.

At the end of the observation deck there is a church, colloquially referred to as the “Trinity in Sparrows”.

Temple of the Life-Giving Trinity on the Sparrow Hills.

That's all the attractions of the observation deck. We return to the subway on the same road. Be careful not to miss the descent to the Vorobyovy Gory metro station from Kosygin street.

If you are not distracted by benches, gazebos, a pond, ducks, squirrels, jackdaws, and walk at a calm pace, then from the metro station to the observation deck of the Sparrow Hills you can walk for 17-20 minutes.

Squirrel. Another squirrel. The park’s general manager instructs subordinates. Subordinates, instead of reverently listening, “make legs wings.”

But on a hot day, the road to the observation deck can take half a day, because the park on the Sparrow Hills is very romantic, quiet and landscaped.

Escalator Gallery on Sparrow Hills

Abandoned escalator gallery of the Leninsky Gory metro station of the USSR (located near the exit of the Vorobyovy Gory metro station to Kosygina street). This escalator lifted (and lowered) passengers from the southern exit from the Leninsky Gory metro station to Kosygin Street. The gallery fell into the shots of the film “Oh, this Nastya” and the Italian film “Sunflowers”, where Sophia Loren rides on an escalator. The gallery was opened on July 23, 1959 (length 90 meters).

By the beginning of the 80s, due to landslides and rock displacement, the gallery walls were covered with cracks, and the object was gradually in emergency condition. The escalator gallery was closed together with the Leninsky Gory station in October 1983. The metro station was restored and re-launched in 2002, with the new name "Vorobyovy Gory". But the gallery refused to restore. Now it is abandoned.

The complex of Vorobyov cottages

The Russian Orthodox monastery abolished in the 18th century. Located at 2 (near the TTK).

Survived - the Church (former cathedral) of Andrei Stratilat, the Cathedral (former church) of the Resurrection of the Word, the Church of St. John the Evangelist.

The monastery was founded by Fedor Rtishchev in 1648 on the site of the temple of the martyr Andrei Stratilat, erected in honor of the inexplicable flight of the Tatar army on September 1, 1591. Here, an “educational” brotherhood was organized, headed by the learned monk Epiphanius Slavinetsky, and a spiritual school was created - the prototype of the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy, which laid the foundations of the Moscow Theological Academy and Moscow University. Now here is the "School at the St. Andrew's Monastery", the patriarchal courtyard, the Synodal Library of the Moscow Patriarchate.

The territory of Mamonova Dacha () adjoins the Andreevsky monastery. This estate belonged to the Princes Dolgoruky, then to the Princes Yusupov, and in 1827 passed to Count M. A. Dmitriev-Mamonov. The surviving palace buildings in the middle of the 20th century were transferred to the Academy of Sciences. Kapitsa, Landau, Semenov, and other prominent scientists worked at the institutes of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

1) In the 18-19 centuries on the Sparrow Hills there was a transit prison. About this he writes in The Past and Thoughts (1868) - “He (Filaret) told the well in the transit prison on the Sparrow Hills:“ Civil law condemned and persecutes you, but the church chases you, wants to say another word, still pray bless you on the way. ”Then, comforting them, he added that“ they, punished, put an end to their past, that they will have a new life, while between the others (probably, there were no other besides officials ) there are still big criminals ", and he set an example of a robber crucified with Christ."

2) The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was originally planned to be placed precisely on the Sparrow Hills. The project was developed and approved and construction began. But later, this project was considered ruinous and the temple was installed where it now stands. The author of this project, the young architect Vitberg, was innocently convicted and sent into exile - The project for the construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior on the Sparrow Hills - “The Past and Thoughts” (1868).

3) In the October days of 1917, the Red Guards established heavy artillery on the Sparrow Hills and on November 1 began shelling the Kremlin.

Historical reference

In this area there was the village of Vorobyevo, known from chronicles from the 50s of the 15th century, when it was bought by Princess Sofya Vitovtovna, wife of the Moscow Grand Duke Vasily I. According to a common version, the princess bought it from the priest Voroby, from which the name of the village appeared. But there is another version. The book “History of Moscow Districts” says that the name of the village of Vorobyovo and the neighboring village of Semenovskoe comes from the names of the sons of the owners of these places - boyar Andrei Kobyla, who had a son Kirill Voroba, and Fedor Kobyla, who had a son Semyon.

Subsequently, the village gave the name "Sparrow Hills". From 1924 to 1991, the area was called the Lenin Hills. The name of the locality "Lenin Hills" was unofficial, it was introduced into everyday life by Lazar Kaganovich. Nevertheless, the name "Lenin Hills" was "popular", "everyday", officially the Sparrow Hills always remained Vorobyov (which is also evident from the title of the penultimate chapter of Mikhail Bulgakov’s famous novel, The Master and Margarita, dated 1940).

Vasily III built a wooden palace here in the 1920s. In 1547, Ivan the Terrible escaped in it from a fire that incinerated the city. Later, in the 17th century, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the father of Peter the Great, lived on the Sparrow Hills with his whole family, and later the young Peter came over here. Under Elizaveta Petrovna on the high bank of the river stood two wooden churches, there was a garden and a large birch grove. The last royal palace on the Sparrow Hills was built for Catherine II.

At the beginning of the 19th century, wooden mansions fell into decay and were dismantled. Only the Trinity Church (1811) has survived from the village.

Vorobyovy Gory is located on one of the seven hills of Moscow.

They rise at an altitude of 80 meters above the Moskva River and are the most remote place from the Kremlin where crowds of tourists strive. After all, it is beautiful here in winter and summer, there is where to take a walk, what to see and get here is simple - you can take the metro (near the station of the same name) or by bus. In order not to get lost, advanced youth is guided by the navigator, and for those who are used to using paper media, a map or diagram found and downloaded on the Internet will help: it is easy to find on the map, for example, the address of the observation deck, from where in the evening you can see fantastic panoramas of Moscow multi-colored lights.

History woven into the area

Why are the mountains exactly Vorobyov? It turns out that there lived a pop by the name of Sparrow. The village of Vorobyovo attracted Princess Sophia, the wife of Prince Vasily I, who bought the village from the priest.

A wooden palace in this place was already built by Vasily III. The construction was useful to many tsars, for example, Grozny himself took refuge there from the great Moscow fire, and Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich brought his whole family and the young Tsarevich Peter to the palace for the summer.

After a while, under the guidance of Peter's daughter, wooden churches were rebuilt here, a garden, a park were placed and ennobled, alleys were laid. The reconstruction of the royal chambers belonged to Catherine the Great.

Interesting fact:   Alexander I dreamed of erecting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior on the Sparrow Hills, but refused this idea because of the high cost of the project.

The observation deck remembers many of the conquerors encroaching on Moscow. From here Khan Girey, the hetman Khotkevich and others looked at the capital, which was revealed before his eyes in all its glory, from here they turned around, slurping slightly.

The decline of the described area falls on the 19th century, when a prison was organized here, as A.I. Herzen. From here, the Bolsheviks bombarded the Kremlin with guns during the October Revolution. But after their victory they became interested in this beautiful place seriously.

The height of Moscow State University is 182 meters (with a spire - 240 m)

The complex of mansions for the highest workers of the party and the entire nomenclature called "Ilyich Village" fully corresponded to the requirements of party bosses and the ideals of communism. The cleanest air, spaciousness, beautiful view, which is still required for the well-being of senior employees. Today there is a Kremlin hospital.

In the difficult post-war period, a beautiful high-rise building was erected here as another answer to the bourgeois countries. In total, 8 high-rises were built in the capital. The largest building in Moscow at that time was the building of Moscow State University.

Despite all the efforts of Kaganovich, another name was not stuck to the Sparrow Hills. They were called Lenin stubbornly, but the people, after M.A. Bulgakov, called the Sparrow Hills.

Watch a video that describes interesting facts related to the Sparrow Hills:

One of the cult sights of Moscow, which has become a must-see point on the maps of tourists coming to the capital. It is from here that the widest panorama of the city opens, accessible year-round, at any time of the day or night - and, by the way, is absolutely free.

The height of the observation deck is about 80 meters above the level of the Moscow River (200 meters above sea level).

The high altitude is due to the features of the relief: the site is located at the highest point of the Vorobyovy Gory - a steep cliff of the Teplostan hill, forming the high right bank of the Moscow River. Thanks to this, the Sparrow Hills significantly rise above the city, and visitors to the observation deck are literally on the edge of the cliff, which offers a magnificent view of the central part of Moscow.

From here you can see almost all the iconic skyscrapers of the capital, 6 of 7 Stalin's skyscrapers (including the building of Moscow State University behind the site), a number of architectural attractions in the central part of the city (and even the Kremlin!), As well as the embankments of the Moscow River. And if you look at the construction cranes on the horizon, you can even look a little into the future of Moscow and imagine how the city landscape will change in the future. The panorama of the city is changing rapidly, and in a few years it will be noticeably different from what you can see today (just as today's panorama is different from what it was a few years ago).

The opening view is very dynamic: if you look closely, you can see how the cars go along the Third Transport Ring and the bright red Lastochka trains along the MCC.

And in order to admire the view of Moscow from the Sparrow Hills it was even more interesting, free viewing binoculars were installed on the site, thanks to which some buildings can be seen literally in detail.

Exactly opposite the observation deck there is a noticeable round structure, the Luzhniki Grand Sports Arena. The Olympic Stadium, opened in 1956, is very convenient to use as a starting point when viewing the views of the city.

To the left of the Luzhniki Stadium

At the leftmost point relative to the Luzhniki Stadium, eyes meet the views of modern Moscow and the tallest Moscow skyscrapers: the Mirax Plaza business center, as well as residential complexes and House on Begovaya. The business center "Nordstar Tower" on Begovaya Street is also clearly visible on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment.

A little to the right is, unexpectedly adjacent to the Ostankino TV tower and pipes of TPP-12, (the White House) and. In addition to the hotel "Ukraine", to the left of the "Luzhniki" you can see two more Stalin's skyscrapers: and. The view of the skyscraper of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is impressive: from here it looks like a giant rock towering above the city. Between the Stalinist skyscrapers lined up in a row are book-houses on, and in front of them is the Novodevichy Convent and various residential buildings.

If you look a little more closely, you can also notice - a 165-meter skyscraper, the silhouette of which tourists sometimes confuse with Stalin's skyscrapers.

You can clearly see the Vorobyovskaya and Luzhnetskaya embankments of the Moscow River, as well as the Berezhkovsky bridge connecting Novodevichy embankment with Berezhkovskaya, and the Luzhnetsk railway bridge.

Center - "Luzhniki"

The Luzhniki Olympic Sports Complex is an indisputable dominant of local species: the Large Sports Arena located exactly opposite the observation deck cannot be confused or not seen.

Behind the dome of the arena you can see a number of iconic Moscow sights and simply conspicuous places: St. Basil’s Cathedral and the bell tower of the Kremlin’s cathedrals, Sechenov Moscow State Medical University building, the Stalinist skyscraper on the Red Gate and the gigantic (To Commemorate the 300th Anniversary of the Russian Fleet) work of Zurab Tsereteli. Especially the eye clings to the monument to Peter I - this is the highest monument in Russia and one of the highest in the world, its height is 98 meters.

Another interesting detail was the cable car, stretching between the Sparrow Hills and Luzhniki over the Moskva River: from the observation deck, its stations and booths moving above the water are visible.

To the right of Luzhniki

On the right side of the panorama you can see another Stalinist skyscraper -. Not far from the high-rise is the building of the Swissotel Red Hills hotel, noticeable due to the design of its upper part: a flying saucer is parked on the roof. The Shukhov Radio Tower (Shabolovskaya Tower) stands apart: a unique hyperboloid structure peeps out from behind the green massif. The construction erected in 1920-1922 is a recognized masterpiece of engineering, not inferior to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

To the right of other notable objects is the 22-story building of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, opened in the early 1990s. The building of the RAS was liked by Muscovites: for its unusual architectural forms on the roof, it was dubbed the "golden brains" and immediately thought up many fantastic stories about their purpose - they say, these are antennas for communicating with extraterrestrial intelligence. Golden Brains have become one of the city's mysteries - perhaps it was for this building that Muscovites fell in love.

In front of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences you can see a unique structure - a 2-level Luzhnetsk metro bridge, thrown over the Moscow River between the Luzhnetsk and Vorobyovskaya / Andreevskaya embankments. On the lower tier is the Vorobyovy Gory metro station (until 1999 the Leninsky Gory metro station) - the world's first metro station located above the river: it was opened in 1959. The upper tier of the bridge is given to cars - a busy highway passes along it. In addition, on both sides of the bridge there are open pedestrian crossings where you can cross the Moscow River without entering the station.

Observation deck history

The observation deck was equipped simultaneously with the construction of the complex of Moscow State University in 1949-1953.

The relief itself dictated the place for it: Vorobyovy Gory - the high right bank of the Moscow River, a steep cliff of the Teplostanskaya Upland, washed by the current. The construction of the cliff was unsafe because of the danger of a landslide: initially they wanted to build the main building of Moscow State University closer to the river, but this turned out to be impossible. The skyscraper was built away from the cliff, and on its edge an observation deck was arranged. Since the construction of the observation deck has changed little: in our days they installed viewing binoculars, and built in the paving illuminated scheme of Moscow with the Moskva River, otherwise it remained the same.

Various organizations repeatedly had plans to build or install monuments on the observation deck of the Vorobyovy Gory (in particular, city authorities were considering the possibility of installing here), but none of them, fortunately, came true.

According to urban legends, in the past the Vorobyovy Gory has more than once become a viewing platform for conquerors: they say that from there, during their campaigns, they looked at Moscow the Crimean Khan Kazy Girey II (Gaza II Gerai) and the Lithuanian Hetman Khodkevich.

How to get there

You can get to the observation deck on the Vorobyovy Gory on foot from the metro station "Sparrow Hills"   Sokolnicheskaya line, it is located on Kosygin Street in the University Square.

However, the path from the metro is not so obvious: to go from the station to the site, you need to exit the lobby towards Kosygina Street, then go under the bridge to the end of the alley under it and turn right - there is an equipped path with steps and a log that rises along the slope of Vorobyovy Gory parapet. The trail goes up to Kosygin street, where there are signs towards the site (one of them is located just at the end of the trail).
