We talk about ways to get from the airports of Munich and Memmingen to the city center by bus, train and taxi. Which options are better? Nuances, prices, schedules, useful links.

In Munich itself there is one airport, named after the politician Franz Josef Strauss. It is located 28 km northeast of the city, today it is one of the largest transport hubs in Europe. However, about 110 km from Munich city center, there is another airport, Memmingen, which serves mainly low-cost flights.

How to get from the airport to them. Strauss to the center of Munich

Airport them. Strauss was opened in 1992 and replaced the Munich-Rome Airport. Now it is Germany’s second largest passenger airport. The Lufthansa and Star Alliance companies are based here. The airport consists of two terminals and a satellite of the second terminal. You can get to the city center from Munich Airport by bus, local train (S-Bahn) and taxi. Let's figure out how to get there more conveniently.

City train S-Bahn

On the travelator you can quickly move to the central zone of the airport (terminal 1), on the second floor of which there is an underground station.

Which train to take?

  • S1  will pass through the north-eastern suburbs, and you will enter the city from the west: Hauptbahnhof - Marienplatz - München Ost;
  • S8  will be in the center on the opposite side, passing through the eastern suburbs.

To get from Munich Airport to   Central station  (Hauptbahnhof) by train is possible in 40 minutes, to the city center - in 45 minutes. What to choose?

The most profitable option is the Lufthansa bus, but it runs only until 22:30. True, with a lot of luggage, getting to the stop is inconvenient.

If you are traveling with your whole family or a small company, then a group ticket for the S-Bahn train will become an inexpensive option (except for the night time from 1:30 to 4:00). And if you need to get to the hotel as quickly as possible without wasting time looking for it, if you have a small child, large luggage or you arrived late at night - a taxi will be the most convenient way.

Munich train station is located in the very center of the city, so you can get to it by any transport that goes in this direction.

Railway transport

You can buy a ticket either at the box office or at special ticket vending machines. Ticket machines work both non-cash and cash. You can pay with coins and bills up to 20 euros. Point of sale can be found on the signs MAC. The fare depends on the type of ticket:

  • Airport-City-Day Ticket Gruppe - a one-day ticket, suitable for traveling in groups of up to 5 people. Ideal for family use, since in this tariff children 6-14 years old are considered as one person. During the day, the ticket can be used an unlimited number of times for trips on any city transport in Munich. Ticket price - 23.9 euros per group;
  • Airport-City-Day Ticket Single is a single Ticket Gruppe fare option. Ticket price is 12.8 euros. Also allows during the day to ride on any type of municipal transport in the city;
  • Einzelfahrkarte - ticket for a one-time trip. Cost - 11.2 euros per person.

Children under 6 years old travel for free, but always accompanied by at least one adult.

Important! To get to the Main Station (Flughafen München-Hauptbahnhof), you need to choose a directionS1 or S8  - on the diagrams they are usually depicted by the blue and yellow lines, respectively.

The desired stop on line S1 and line S8 will be the 14th in a row. Travel time will be at least 40-45 minutes, taking into account the waiting train - up to an hour.

On weekdays, the first train leaves at 4:30 in the morning, the next at 5:50. Subsequent departures take place approximately every 20 minutes. Last departure at 0:10. On weekends and holidays (New Year and Christmas holidays - December 24-31), the movement starts at 5:30 and ends at 23:50, but the twenty-minute interval is maintained throughout the day.

Buses

You can also take buses to Munich from the airport. Departure is made from terminal No. 2 from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m. every 15 minutes. Transport moves to the Main Station and makes a stop in North Schwabing. Travel time is approximately 45 minutes, but traffic jams can increase it.

The cost of a bus ticket depends on how you purchase it. So, on the carrier’s website buying a ticket for an adult will cost 11 euros one way and 18 euros one way. A child ticket (6-14 years old) costs only 6 and 12 euros, respectively. When buying directly from the driver, the ticket price will be 1 euro higher.

Attention! Only private buses travel from the airport to the city, so city tickets do not apply to them.

Car sharing

For those who like to drive on their own, there is a car rental service. Offices of companies ready to provide car rental are located on the ground floor of the central airport building. It is also possible to book a vehicle in advance on the website of the selected company.

The cost of the service depends on the class of the car. So, simple mini-cars, economy class can be rented for 3 days for at least 75-80 euros. The cost of the Standard and the Universal will be close to a hundred euros, and for a luxury car you need to be ready to give at least 200 euros.

To conclude an agreement with a car-sharing company, you must have the following documents that belong to one person:

  • passport;
  • international driver's license.

It is also important that the driver is an adult, and his driving experience is at least 1-2 years. Some companies may present their requirements, for example, the presence of a driver’s credit card (VISA, MasterCard, AMEX).

Taxi and private transfer

Ordering a taxi or private transfer is ideal for those who value travel comfort above all else or are burdened with bulk luggage. Travel time by car is practically no different from travel time by bus or commuter train and is about 40-60 minutes.

The cost of a trip from Munich Airport to the city center is high: it will be at least 80 euros. The easiest way to book a car through the site or mobile applications, especially for those who do not speak fluent German. In addition, carriers often offer discounts for online orders.

The price for an individual transfer is higher than for a taxi, but the customer has the opportunity to choose a car class and receive additional services such as, for example, meeting at the airport or a Russian-speaking driver.

Munich is a city with a well-developed transport system. Getting from the airport directly to the center will not be a problem for the traveler. When choosing a travel method, you should focus on the number of people in the group and the amount of luggage. Traveling by train is the most inexpensive solution, but not very convenient for passengers with bulk luggage. Buses are the golden mean between the price and comfort of the trip, so it suits those who travel with the company well. Car sharing, taxi and private transfer are expensive, but they also have their advantages: high comfort and the possibility of additional services. How to get there! "
