Fabulous island of Santorini. Santorini, Greece: the most truthful information about the island of the first hands of Santorini The origin of the title

I always dreamed of visiting Santorini, which is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. This magic island appeared in the 17th century BC. After the powerful volcano eruption, different legends and myths go about it. Local residents consider him a business card of Greece, some are even called the island of Greek Pearl, and historians and philosophers claim that Santorini is the same "Lost Atlantis", which still remains a mystery of history.

Undoubtedly, the island is very beautiful and mysterious, here the two most, in my opinion, fabulously beautiful cities in the world are located on the top of the curator of the underwater volcano. That especially here attracted my attention, this is a picturesque view of the snow-white city of Fira, which opens from the sea. Very beautiful sight: The blue domes of family churches are illuminated by the rays of the sun, and at home and buildings in exceptionally white-blue colors are chaotic located on the slope of the rock. Traditional transport on the island is a donkey. It was on him that the guide suggested us to rise to the city.

This is not the best idea (the donkey will take a very long time), so I preferred to climb the stairs from 800 steps to see all the beauties.

Not so far from the city of Fira, 11 km away, there is the most romantic place on Santorini - the city where the lovers go, newlyweds from different parts of the globe and arrange an unforgettable honeymoon here.

My attention in the city attracted numerous snow-white small houses and windmills.

How to get

You can get to the island of Santorini in two ways: by air - airplane and water - ferry. Of course, the plane is much faster, but the ferry is essentially cheaper and more interesting, in my opinion. I fell on the ferry from Crete Island. I want to note that the journey was comfortable and cheerful. By the way, many ride on ferry with cars.

Plane

Despite the fact that the Santorini Greek Island Area is only 76 km², he has its own international airport - Santorini National Airport (Kratikos Aerolimenas Santorinis).

Santorini island there are charter (without transfers) and regular flights (with change through) from Moscow. Aegean Airlines, Aeroflot, which mainly carry out these flights, often offer very favorable prices. Flight from Moscow to Athens takes about 3 hours, and then to the island itself no more than 40 minutes. There are flights that last for a longer time. I traveled to the island in the following way: flew to Crete (G.), and then I used the high-speed ferry Flying Cat 4 and a few hours later I was already in place and enjoyed landscapes.

You can compare prices for tickets.

About how it is more convenient to get to the island on the ferry, I will tell you in the "Steam" section. As for the airport, it is located in the east of the island, not far from the Greek village of Kamari. In the airport building, which is small and, so, so in the summer there is unbearably hot and closely. There is here Duty Free., Restaurants, ATM, Cafe and Information Bureau.

To get from the airport to the cities of Iia and Fira, you can use a taxi or bus. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that ordering a taxi must be in advance, as you can stay without a car due to high competition.

From St. Petersburg on Santorini flies different airlines. The most common ones are Aeroflot, British Airways, Lufthansa. The fastest flight from St. Petersburg to the fir takes approximately 4 hours and 35 minutes. Flights are often running, almost every day, but tickets must be purchased in advance.

Ferry

The Greek island of ferries go every day from March 24 to October 10 from Athens, from Crete and Rhodes. Among them there are ordinary, high-speed ferries, high-speed catamarans and rocket ships. If there is no way to hurry, then the usual ferries like PREVELIS is the perfect option, because it is the cheapest. Prevelis - a big slow steam, which can be used in case there is a desire to save, as the price of a ticket from 16-25 EUR, only the journey will delay for 6 hours.

Just below, I will add information about the schedule and ticket price.

High-speed ferries (catamarans), like Flying Cat, fast enough and comfortable.

In addition to the high-speed ferry Flying Cat 4, which runs every day between the Greek Islands, there is also a megajet boat:

On the ferries there are restaurants, and slot machines, bars - in general, everything to make a journey around the sea as interesting and unforgettable. From Athens in Santorini, the ferry leaves from the port of Piraeus.

The cheapest ticket at the same time will be about 34 EUR. Fryer Flying Cat 4 from Athens to Santorini goes 4 hours. Rhodes The cost of the ticket is 30 EUR. I traveled to the island from the port of Crete Island in just 18 EUR. We were announced that the journey had to last about 2 hours, but, put the hand on the heart, I can honestly declare that I did not notice how time flew. On board it was very fun, live music played in the bar and we even danced.

Actual schedule Ferries and ticket booking - on FerriesiSingreece.com. Selecting the desired date, time, port of departure and arrival, you can book a ticket online. You can buy it in the port itself. That's how it looks like:

Since the port is located at the bottom of the city, I had to climb the serpentine within 20 minutes upstairs by bus. And at this point, views of the endless sea and the port that I opened from the window of the bus were struck by our beauty.

When the season. When it is better to go

The holiday season on the island opens in April and lasts until October. But the best time is the velvet season, because the sun is no longer "scorching", the sea is still warm, the beaches are free, because the number of tourists is reduced.

Based on my personal experience, I can say that in the summer (I was here in July) there is an incredible heat on the island and, despite all the beauty, physically hard to be in the sun, which quietly "fries", and not at all up to walk. Therefore, I think that the end of September - the beginning of October will be the perfect period for trips to Santorini. However, it is necessary to take into account that by mid-October, the weather is changing sharply: the weather becomes windy and rains begin.

Although it all depends on what purpose you come to this island: newlyweds that arrange a wedding in this romantic corner come at any time of the year. The bad weather stops and creative personalities - writers, photographers, artists who love to create and reflect. But still, for ordinary tourists, it is not recommended to go here from mid-November to March due to strong winds and humidity, and besides this, ferries change their schedule and go much less frequently during this period.

A few words about holidays and festivals who carry religious character: Agios Ionnis celebrate in July with an abundance of wine drinks, delicious food and music, the day of the spirit of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated in mid-August. Considerable interest causes jazz and wine festivals from tourists, which are held at the end of summer, but I will also tell about it in more detail in the "Holidays" section.

As for the difference in prices in the season and not the season, then, of course, prices for tickets for not the season is much cheaper than during the season. In addition, there will be no overlap for hotels that are very expensive in the summer. Thus, in no season you can enjoy the fabulous beauty of the island without a crowd of people and for low prices.

Santorini in the summer

Summer on Santorini is very hot, the average air temperature in July in July to + 28c in the shade, but may rise above + 40 ° C. There is practically no rain in the summer, and sea water at that time heats up to + 25c.

Walking around the sights in the heat - a risky business: it is necessary to comply with precautions, otherwise you can get a powerful heat blow. Despite serious problems with fresh water on the island, a variety of vegetables and fruits are growing here (grapes, snow-white big eggplants, fava beans, miniature sweet tomatoes), which I definitely advise you to try.

In summer, tourists are a lot: despite the heat, everyone wants to have time to spend their vacation at this time of year. Therefore, it is better to schedule the journey and book tickets and hotels in advance.

Santorini in autumn

As I said above, autumn is the most wonderful time to relax in this paradise.

It's not so hot as summer, but still warm: the average air temperature in October reaches +22 C, and the water temperature is +23 C, which allows you to spend a lot of time on the beach and in the sea. Many tourists leave home, and long-term walks on the most beautiful places are more comfortable than in the summer. Also at this time are more and more weddings.

However, by mid-October, nature recalls the approach of winter: the rains are increasingly, the air becomes cooler: +16 S.

Santorini in spring

Spring on Santorini begins in March, air temperature in day - + 16s, and there can still be cold rains, but, despite this, nature on the island begins to wake up, and the locals are preparing to meet foreign guests. In April, the air temperature is already + 19 comp, and the temperature of the water in the Aegean Sea is +17. March and April are excellent for spring sites and sightseeing, but you need to be ready for rain and cool temperature, so it is better to take warm clothes with you. But what wonderful landscapes open to the human eye, the island is perfect at any time of the year:

But the weather in May begins to rejoice: it becomes warm and sunny, the average air temperature reaches + 22c, and almost no rain, and every day it becomes warmer and warmer. Obviously, therefore in May increase the flow of tourists who want not only to wander around the island, but also to plunge into the Aegean Sea.

Although the average seawater temperature in May reaches + 22c, still costs pretty cool weather. Do not come at this time with children, but at the end of May you can safely open the bathing season and sunbathe. Closer to the beginning of June, the average temperature rises to +26 C.

Santorini winter

In winter, Santorini resembles a ghost island with empty streets, and it is not even because of cloudy weather, and the lack of ferries, which at this time of the year go more and less. Some resorts are completely closed, the locals are sent to the continent until the next tourist season occurs.

From December to January here is cloudy weather, but without special showers. The average air temperature in the afternoon in December - +16 C, and in January and February - +14 C. Despite the fact that winter on the island is unpredictable, snow does not happen, and rains, if they are going, will not long. Most likely, this time of year is suitable for those who love to stay alone and reflect alone with the sea. But still, in my opinion, this is not the best time to relax on the island, because to get here, you will have to spend a considerable amount of money on the flight. A little patience - and spring will delight solar warm and bright colors.

What are the prices for rest

Holidays in Santorini - cheapest pleasure. In this section I will try to tell you more about prices for hotels, car rental, bus, food and excursions, as well as how to save.

 • Prices for housing on the island are more dependent on the season and hotel stars. So, for example, a weekly tour with a stay at a 2-minute room in a 3-star hotel at the height of the season will cost about 290 EUR, 4-lot is already more expensive - 540 EUR, and in the luxury room - 870 EUR. However, if you go on your own and stop in the apartment, we will save significantly, since the 2-seater number in the week will cost about 170 EUR. And one more cheap option is to purchase a tourist trip in winter, autumn or early spring, i.e. In not the season. During this period of time, the number in the 3-star hotel will cost about 130 EUR, 4 - 290 EUR, and in 5-star from 590 EUR.
 • Prices for food are European. So, dinner for two will be about 30 -40 EUR, depending on the type of restaurant. A dinner will be more expensive: from 40 to 50 EUR. And the cost of cappuccino in the cafe will be 2.7 EUR, black coffee - 2 EUR.
 • The price of a bus ticket, depending on the route, will be about 1.6- 2.3 EUR. Premium car rental will cost about 170 EUR per day, medium - 89 EUR, economy -50 EUR per day, also consider that the cost of the liter of gasoline will be about 1.8 EUR. In more detail about the rental of the car, I tell in the section "Rent a car".
 • As tour tours There are a lot on the island, then they are different prices. These are mainly dependent on the type of transport, the presence of a Russian-speaking guide, district, etc. An introductory excursion for the main attractions of the capital will cost about 40-55 EUR.

Main attractions. What to see

There is a lot of interesting sights on Santorini, there are exactly what to see and what to admire. I would like to highlight those that, in my opinion, must be visited, I will tell you more about them. But for starters - what to look for 1 day.

Honestly, for such a place like Santorini, you need more time. But what to look at the island, if you have only one day? I will try to offer such a route to cover the most interesting attractions and places.

 • First you need to walk through the streets of the picturesque city of Fira, making memorable pictures.

 • Here you can also try to descend to the old port on winding steps and look into the tavern overlooking the sea and have lunch. There are also souvenir benches. You can go about 3-4 hours to all this, although it depends on how long you will be photographed. If you want to go upstairs back, you can use the services of the donkey for 5 EUR.
 • Next, we go to the romantic course with its magic atmosphere, the more it is close to the fir (11 km). It is a very beautiful place and will undoubtedly want to make a stunning photo session and here. You are enough for 2-3 hours.

 • And finally, to complete the day Tour in Santorini, I advise you to visit the Black Beach or the beach of Perissa. Because, in my opinion, it is impossible to leave the island without plunging here in the warm and healing sea. By the way, it really has useful and therapeutic properties that rejuvenate and heal the skin. And what is a wonderful beach with black, like coal, hot sand! It is worth seeing and feel! Also along the seashore is full of restaurants, cafes, taverns. So hungry you will not be right away.

Top 5.

Sunset on Santorini

One of the main attractions of the island is his famous sunset, which is so beautiful that the whole life will leave an indelible impression in your memory.

I watched the sunset from the village site. Do not be discouraged if you do not have the opportunity to get there: beautiful views are opening with the city of Fira, and the villages of Imerovigli, and they get to them much easier.

Cities Fira and Ia

The capital of the island is a fir - and the romantic course I advise you to visit immediately after arriving at the island. On the central streets of the fira, there are a lot of shops, souvenir shops, restaurants, cafe for every taste, however, at the height of the season there is not to pour out among the crowd of people.

Traditional Greek architecture, mills, a long staircase, the Venetian fortress in Ye, as well as impressive landscapes allow charming photos.

Venetian fortress in Ye

The Venetian fortress in the city of Iia, which previously defended the island from pirates, is located on the edge of the rock and is a monument of medieval architecture.

Today, its function is somewhat different - cultural and historical landmark and a wonderful observation deck.

Windmills in the village of Iia

To look at the most photographed attraction of Santorini - windmills, you need to get to the village of Iia. In addition, I advise you to capture this picturesque spectacle at sunset, you will not regret!

Ancient Tira

And now a little history. In the 9th century BC, Spartan colonists founded an ancient city on Mesa Mesa Mesa.

The ruins of an ancient tira were found only at the end of the 19th century: the remains of houses, tombs, churches, etc. You can get here by taxi or tourist bus. You can visit the ruins on all days from 8:30 to 14:30, except Monday. But, in my opinion, it is best to schedule visiting the excavations in the morning or in the evening: and people are smaller, and the sun is not so bake. The entrance to the ruins is 2 EUR. You can buy a tour of 10 EUR, which includes a shuttle service from Camari to the top of Mesa Mesa Mesa and back, only the ticket is paid separately. I also want to note that there is no cafe on the territory of the ancient tira, there is only a machine with drinks, so take something to a snack with you.

Lighthouse Faros

A snow-white Lighthouse Faros was built in the south of Santorini in 1892, and now it is one of the most remarkable Lights of the Aegean Sea. Interestingly, Kerosene was used for his work for a long time, and already in 1893 - electrical energy. Currently, the lighthouse works in automatic mode.

Since there are an incredible beauty of the sunsets, I advise you to come here with a camera, and along the way, hungry, you can visit the Greek taverns and try national cuisine dishes.

Beaches. What better

Santorini Island is famous not only with its sunsets, but also multicolored beaches: black, white and red. The following is a map where the following beaches are highlighted:

 • kamari Beach;
 • perissa Beach;
 • Red beach;
 • White beach.

Beach Kamari

Along the coast of the village of Kamari is the largest and most popular black island beach. The village itself does not stand out by itself: bars, nightclubs, hotels, the embankment. During the day you can swim, engage water species Sport, sunbathing, and at night - have fun and dance on discos.

Exotic black sand - the result of the volcanic eruption. They say it possesses magical properties: rejuvenates the body, treats skin diseases. And also that I surprised me the most, this is that in some places you can enter the water on the volcanic plate! Imagine only: not in the sand or stones, but for the volcano frozen lava! You can get to here in 15 minutes by bus from the capital.

Beach Perissa

Another beach with black sand is Perissa Beach. There are not many tourists here, probably because much fewer clubs, bars and restaurants.

But at the same time, the tourist infrastructure is well developed: you can order food and drinks straight on the beach, and in the evening there are incendiary dances and entertainment. In addition, there is a water taxi for movement between two beaches, and the diving center works for those who want to renounce.

Red Beach

Red Island Beach is located close to the village of Akrotiri. Since it is very picturesque and beautiful here, this place is never deserted, almost all the coast is always forced by sun loungers and umbrellas.

Above the beach hangs a large rock of dark red. On the shore and in the water is the red and black pebbles. You can get to here by bus from the fir to Akrotiri in 30 minutes, and then go down to the foot of the cliff gently.

White beach

Not far from the Red Beach is the only white beach on Santorini. Very quiet and secluded place, especially it is suitable for romance lovers.

Here you can sail onto the boat right from the Red Beach. And somewhere here, by the way, there is a lighthouse Faros, which I mentioned above.

Churches and temples. What are you worth a visit

Church of Ayu Mina.

On the top of the rock in the city of Iia is located a white church with a blue roof. Church of Ayu Mina - the symbol of the island.

I recommend to visit this picturesque place to admire the folk architecture and a sunset opening with one of the terraces. You can go inside, as the church is open to people. It is better to visit the church before the start of the service or after its end. Although you can enter and during service, but carefully, without violating the rules of behavior. The service schedule is changing, but approximately the morning service lasts from 8.30 to 11.00, and evening from 19.00 to 21.00.

Church Panagia Episcopes

In the church, Panagia Episkopi, which is located near the village of Excel, is kept the ancient shrines. She survived various catastrophes, so the locals believe that she is guarded by the Virgin Mary.

This is one of the few churches on the island that is covered with tiles. I recommend to visit this magical place to feel a peace. Mode of operation: around the clock, the cost of visiting is free.

Monastery of the Prophet Ilya

The monastery of the Prophet Ilya towers at the highest point of the island. The valuable handwritten books and Byzantine icons are kept here. It was founded in 1711.

Now there is a museum here, but during the reign of the Turks here there was a center against Ottoman rule, which is why this monastery acquires even greater importance for local residents. However, it is possible to visit it only with the excursion, because next to it is the NATO base.

Cathedral in Fire

There is in the fir cathedral incredible beauty. Built it in 1827.

After the earthquake in 1956, he was practically destroyed, but later it was restored. The temple is striking with its elegant beauty. Bell tower, mosaic, arches from the outside create a unique image. The frescoes that decorate the interior from the inside were created by the local artist - Christophore Assimis. Approximate opening hours: in the morning 9.00 - 12.30, in the afternoon: 17.00 - 17.30 and in the evening: 19.30 - 21.00, the schedule also changes depending on the services.

Catholic cathedral

The architecture of this cathedral, built in 1823, is very distinguished by him from others. Still from afar, you begin to notice the peach color of its walls, completely atypical for this area.

Especially attracted my attention to the Baroque style tower with lattices, balustrade and elegant finish.

The interior of the cathedral is decorated with paintings, inside the dome is covered with a blue-lilac color, and the walls are painted into creamy and orange shades.

In Greek, there is a post here every day at 8.00. On Saturdays, the service is usually beginning at 19.00, on Sundays - at 10.00. At this time, the cathedral is also open to visit, as well as at any other time.

Museums. What are you worth a visit

Museum of prehistoric firal

The Museum of Prehistoric Fira, which is located in the capital at the crossroads of Metropolos and Decigala streets, will introduce you to bronze products, labor instruments, statuettes, and other interesting exhibits and artifacts, many of which were found during the excavations of Akrotiri.

Golden Capricorn, made of gold, is the most famous exhibit of this museum.

A bit of practical information: the museum works daily from 8:30 to 15:00, except Monday. Ticket price: 4-8 EUR.

Archaeological Fira Museum

I also recommend visiting the Archaeological Museum popular on the island, founded in 1902. Here you can meet artifacts of different periods: prehistoric, Roman and even Byzantine. The museum itself is small, but his collection is of great interest to connoisseurs of antiquity: inscriptions, figurines, frescoes, clay figures, vessels, vases, etc.

Museum Operation: Daily from 8:30 to 15:00, except Monday. Ticket price: - 2 EUR, while you can save and with the same ticket visit the Museum of Prehistoric Fira.

Museum of wine

In the area of Votonas near the private winery there is a museum of wine. I advise you to visit him if you are interested in the history of winemaking on the island, the stages of wine production, the ancient equipment that was used to create it.

The museum itself is in the cave at the depths of six meters. I want to note that it is not necessary to attach to the guide, as they give a audio behavior here, which speaks in Russian. An exciting tour of tasting is completed, and, of course, you will be offered to buy wine here.

But I do not advise this to do, because in the shop at the museum it is more expensive than in ordinary stores. Museum work hours: daily from 8:00 to 19:00, ticket price for visiting the museum - 7 EUR.

Maritime Museum

If you are interested in sea topics, then in the city I recommend visiting a very interesting museum, where you can familiarize yourself with the maritime history, both all Greece and Islands. It is located at the following address:

Its exposition is very interesting and diverse.

On the first floor there are different machines, tools for building ships, navigation instruments, marine equipment, tackle, compasses, tools, photographs of ship commands.

On the second floor of the museum you can see the hopping and ship bell.

And still models of ships: and old, and modern.

Here, be the same, there is a library with ship logs, important historical documents and marine cards.

But without clarifying the guide, it is difficult to understand anything. Opening hours: All days, except for Thursday from 10: 00-14: 00 & 17:00 -20: 00.

Nearby Isles

Volcanic Islands Nea-Kameni and Palea Camera

If you arrived at Santorini, then you will definitely make an unforgettable trip to the two small islands, which appeared as a result of volcanic eruptions in different era. On the map below these islands are marked in red:

Water excursions are organized here daily.

Hot springs and church of St. Nicholas are that, for which they arrive on on Palea-Kamen. And I recommend to climb to the crater of the current volcano, if you are certainly not from a "timid tent."

From the port of the Tira sail here about about 10 minutes, the tour lasts about 3-4 hours and it should be noted that there are no food and water here, so I advise you to take drinks with you and snack something, and of course bathing facilities. The cost of such an excursion will cost you about 52 EUR. It is difficult to get to these islands to these islands, so I recommend to purchase an organized excursion.

Food. What to try

On Santorini to taste the national Greek dishes for me was one of the main and most pleasant entertainment. I want, moreover, add that only white eggplants, gigantic capers and miniature tomatoes grow on this island.

Moussaka

The first thing I advise you to try is a casserole of tomatoes, eggplants, minced meat, potatoes, and sauce Bezamel. Call her Musaka. I really liked this dish, a little fatty, but very satisfying and so tasty that they just losing my fingers!

Musaka usually costs from 10 to 13 EUR depending on the restaurant, but the portions are very large.

Greek salad

In any restaurant or cafe you will definitely offer it as a snack. Salad portions are so big that you can take one for two, usually costs from 7-8 EUR, maybe more expensive, depending on the level of the institution.

In the Greek salad almost everywhere, as seasoning, add sour saline capers, which give spicy taste. They can be consumed and as a snack.

Greek cuisine has similarity and Turkish. Dolmades conquered me especially, which is prepared from grape leaves, stuffed with lamb and rice. It smells like various spices and spices, serve this dish hot, be sure to try it! It costs about 11 EUR.

Tsadziki sauce

He is simply obligatory, you will no longer try this sauce anywhere, only on Santorini. It is preparing from yogurt a, garlic and grated cucumbers. Tasty and unusual, I tried to cook it at home no longer that taste.

Stifado.

For meat lovers, I advise you to try stewed in wine with greenery and beef onions. It looks very appetizing.

Tomato Balls.

And for those who consider themselves to vegetarians, I recommend trying tottoes from tomatoes, sweet peppers, onions, mint and other herbs. Unique taste.

Dishes with fish here are not cheap, although the sea is near, but very juicy and delicious. You will definitely offer to try Fish Rofos, which is the inhabitant of Santorini's banks. It will cost you this pleasure in 12 -15 EUR. I didn't like the octopuses, the taste seemed to be somehow strange. What concerns snacks, then their great many here: mussels in different sauces and even in wine, delicious feta, local olives, squid, shrimp. The cost of a plate with snacks will be about 7-9 EUR, but again, depending on the place.

I didn't like the wines here, and the prices for them, as it seemed to me, too high. Local wine stores are from 10 EUR and higher. Although it is still worth trying the most delicious - Red Sweet Wine Vinsanto.

On the main street in Ea there is a confectionery cafe with a huge number of cakes and other diverse sweets. If you take with you, then you will cost it cheaper.

 • Restaurant "La Maison". I would recommend this romantic place located in the village of Imerovigli. I tried Musaka in many places, but here it is simply excellent, and the view of the caldera and the Aegean Sea is simply awesome. Trying a salad from figs and cheese and chocolate desserts here. Only tables should be booked in advance, as this place is popular and among the locals. Full dinner will cost you about 30-40 EUR.

 • Restaurant Naoussa Tavern in Fire. I really liked the service. The service. The meal is very friendly and welcoming, the food is high quality and prices are quite moderate. I advise you to try the dessert Pahlav and Greek yogurt with honey and nuts. The average account per person from 20-50 EUR, depending on what you order. In the amount of 20 to 25 EUR, you can enjoy dessert, light salad and a cup of coffee. Hot, salad, dessert, coffee, wine will cost more and, accordingly, prices will be higher.
 • Tavern - Taverna Giorgaros. It is located in Akrotiri, not far from the Red Beach. Tasty food, low-cost prices and colorful atmosphere, and some of the staff spoke even in Russian.

In some cafes on the island of prices more and less democratic: you can drink fresh juice, a cup of coffee, to enjoy ice cream, and also enjoy fascinating views from the terrace. However, for rest in the cafe at the pools will have to pay more.

Holidays

Every year on the island is carried out a variety of celebrations, holidays, festivals, contests and festivities, many of them are associated with religion and ancient traditions:

 • Santorini Jazz Festival. If you are on the island in July, I recommend visiting a very bright and beautiful jazz festival. Every year famous musicians and jazz groups come here.

 • Holiday "Volcanoes" with fireworks, dances and contests. He is celebrated in August: people are having fun, dance, sing, show interesting views, depicting the eruption of the volcano. For them, this holiday is very important, because, despite the fact that the island died many times from the hot lava, life was reborn again and again.
 • Day of the Assumption of the Virgin. It is considered the most important religious holiday of the island, very fun celebrated on August 15. Mass festivities are held on the streets, a festive service for parishioners is held, all this is accompanied by congratulations and treats.
 • Well, if you love traditional entertainment, you will definitely take part on August 15 at the IFaisteia culture festival. While you can try a variety of traditional Greek dishes.
 • And in early September, the musicians and singers come to the island and singers and the international festival begins, which is surprising, please and merry the people. In Fire, concerts of classical and modern music are carried out.

 • Parkura Festival for Motion Art. It is held in early October. I, unfortunately, did not find it. Previously, the festival was held in different countries of the world, but later Santorini became the main venue, thanks to his unusual architecture. There are a lot of different obstacles on the island, such as roofs of Greek houses, stairs, railings, walls. At this festival, against the background of fabulous landscapes of the island, the tracers are striking with their abilities skillfully move along narrow streets.

 • Wine Festival "The Cities of The Sea". Typically spend at the end of summer, a great time to tasting Greek wines. And, by the way, on the island, white grapes are mostly grown, the most popular wines: rathery and vinsanto, which are not exported.

Safety. What to beware is worth

Below on the map, areas where tourists stop most often on Santorini:

On the map allocated orange:

 • 1 - Fira;
 • 2 - Village Imerovigli;
 • 3 - Firostefany village;
 • 4 - Perissa:
 • 5 - Kamari;
 • 6 - Akrotiri.

City Fira

At an altitude of 260 m above the sea on the slope of the cliff spread the capital of the island, his pearl is the city of Fira. Beautiful sunlines and sunrises, stunning views of the sea, landscapes, various attractions: museums, churches, galleries, temples, etc. Will not leave a single tourist indifferent. However, life here does not subside even at night, so if you prefer a quiet and relaxing holiday, it is better to consider other options, because Fira is a very lively city. Since here the very center and most attractions are here exactly here, then hotels here are expensive, there is practically no budget housing, so I personally never chose this area for living.

It is worth staying here if there are not only beach holidays in your tourist goals, but also nightly functions: discos, bars. This is plentiful here. And, of course, in the afternoon, you can enjoy visiting various museums and galleries.

Imerovigli

2 km from the capital of the island at the very edge of Rock is another cozy resort called Imerovigli, and it attracts mostly tourists of a secluded rest. This village, the population of which is 470 people, is notable for churches in a typical Greek style. In addition, here you can see the ruins ancient castle Skaro, which was destroyed by an earthquake. Here I also advise you to stop those who love not only the wreckage of the past in the form of vintage ruins, but also connoisseurs of discos and numerous nightclubs, which are not less than in Fir. And another indisputable advantage of this place is a considerable choice of accommodation for low-cost prices.

Firostefany

To the north of the fir is a small village of Firostefani. As I noticed, it's not so crowded here and noisy as in the capital itself, so in my opinion it is perfect place For family holidays. Firostefany is of interest to those who love to eat and walk through the narrow streets. You will not find special attractions here, only traditional blue-white houses. And from anywhere in the village, delightful sunsets are opening. Firostefany is most suitable for lovers of picturesque landscapes and quiet, quiet rest. And because of the remoteness from the capital, hotels here are the most optimal prices in terms of prices, while it is convenient to get to the city center and others interesting places.

Perissa and Kamari

They are located far enough from the fira and most popular among beach lovers who want to save on the hotel. The card of the Perissa looks like this: but the map of Kamari: walking here really there is no place here, but prices for housing and food inexpensive. However, it is still unsafe to settle here, because the airport is located nearby and it becomes scary when you see how low airplanes fly. Yes, also noisy. Well, of course, far from the center.

Among the attractions of Kamari can visit the monastery Panagia Mirtidiotiss. Perissa, in turn, manitis with its ruins of the V century n. e. I also advise you to visit the big church Timiu Stavr.

Perissa, like Kamari, is famous for its black volcanic sand. Bars, cafes, taverns, restaurants - all this is on the beach. In addition, you can do diving and ride water skiing. Thus, these cities are mainly worth riding a beach holiday. But still, I would not recommend travelers these areas for living, despite the cheapest prices for hotels.

Akrotiri.

As I have already mentioned above, archaeologists believe that Santorini is the legendary Atlantis, which went under water. And, of course, they do not think so without reason, as in 1967, whole cities with furniture, dishes, painting of the Minoan civilization were discovered during the excavations near Akrotiri.

So a myth is or reality, we can only guess. This is how the Akrotiri Map looks like: As for prices for hotels, they are much cheaper here, given the distance from the center. But I do not advise you to choose this area for living, still distant from the capital. It is better to come here separately, the more here it is worth visiting the archaeological reserve and touch the ancient world.

Another attraction of Akrotiri is the famous red beach. As a result of the rip out of the rock, the coast of red sand was formed, which in combination with the blue sea form a very beautiful landscape. For holidaymakers there are chaise lounges, umbrellas, in the nearest hotels you can buy drinks and food. Sea flora and fauna of these places is particularly attractive for divers. Therefore, in Akrotiri it is worth going for various reasons: for the sake of excavation of the Minoan civilization, diving and beach holidays. And all this for a relatively low-cost price!

How to move around the island

On the island there are several options for movement. When you travel with a group of tourists, the transfer problem will be solved, but this option is more expensive and you will not be able to deviate from the planned route and will be tied to the guide. With independent travel, there is already a need for transport to move around the island. I want to notice that there is no subway and railway. There are only such options as buses, taxis, car rental or motorcycle. Inside the city you can move on foot or on donkey. But to rent a bike on Santorini is not quite a good ideaAlthough quite feasible. However, it is difficult to imagine how to move on it on steep terrain and serpentine.

Taxi. What features exist

Also on the island you can use the services of a taxi. You can order a taxi. About 20 EUR will be able to get from AI to Fir, from the port to the city of Jia will cost about 30 EUR, and from the fir to the port - 18 EUR. And here is considered a good tone to leave the tips 10% of the cost of the trip. Cheap pleasure, but quickly and comfortably, but every day the beach of Kamari from the city of Iia do not ride.

There are cases when drivers do not include a counter and then need to agree on the cost of the trip, but this should be done in advance. There are no competition among taxi drivers, the cars are worthy: quite comfortable Mercedes and Toyota, usually yellow with a Taxi checkered. You can call a taxi 100 meters from the ferry or city center at a taxi station or call by phone by asking him for the hotel staff. I want to mention another feature so that it does not seem to be unceremonious: for local residents a taxi service is absolutely free. One day, when I was driving from the port in Ja, the driver, asked me, will I not, if I am against if he thumps two more familiar on the road, naturally, for free.

Public transport

Climb buses walk along the island and connect a fri with many beaches and villages. The ticket costs from 1, 6 EUR to 2.3 EUR.

Bus timetable and ticket prices. They go once in half an hour and stop in intermediate points. The passage is prohibited and if all places are busy, it will pass by you and you will have to wait more than 30 minutes.

Transport rental

Car rent

Rent a car, yes or any other transport on Santorini (scooter, quad bike, motorcycle) can be at any corner, since the rental service is very well developed here. Usually, the cost of renting a car with insurance per day will cost you at 50 EUR, even consider the cost of gasoline: 70 -80 EUR per tank. Rent a scooter will be released a bit cheaper: 30 - 40 EUR per day and 30 - for gasoline. You can choose in advance and rent a car. If you want to save on car rental, then search for rental away from the hotel, there prices are much cheaper. To make a rental agreement, the following documents are necessary: a passport with a visa, the right of an international sample with a driver's age at least 1 year, about 200 EUR. Carefully read the contract (in this case, you will need knowledge of English), as well as make sure that the landlord does not add anything on your copy of the contract after signing. Problems with parking lots only in the center. Paid parking will cost approximately 1.5 EUR per hour, you can park and free in those places where allowing signs are. But only be accurate: the towers here work very well and instantly drive your car to the stalls.

Motorcycle rental

Among the tourists are very popular on a moped or motorcycle, as this type of transport is very convenient in the summer: it is easy to park and move throughout the territory of the island, and it is also quite economical. But there are certain nuances: for drivers not from the European Union, it is necessary to have international driver's license of the category A on a moped or motorcycle or scooter, as well as when driving need to wear helmets. As for the roads, they are two-way in the cities, and in the villages are narrow. I recommend using free parking, which is a lot in Fire and other cities and the villages of the island. Not only on Santorini, but in all Greece movement on the roads right-hand.

Hotels - Do not forget to check prices from the booking sites! Do not overpay. It !

Rent a Car - Also aggregation of prices from all rollingrs, all in one place, go!

In fact, this is not one island, but five relative to large (Tira, Palea-Kamen, Nea-Kamen, Tirassia and Asprons, or asponyy) and about a dozen small islets-rocks forming a ring around the central lagoon.

One of the oldest centers of civilization, Santorin was populated by the peoples of the sea back in the V-IV millennium BC. E., In the III Millennium, he was already a major shopping center connected by thousands of marine routes with Crete and Phoenician colonies. Here one of the centers of the Minoan culture was formed, but approximately in 1647-1628 BC. e. The volcano, formed the island, unexpectedly exploded, almost one-time throwing approximately 60 cubic kilometers of magma. The middle of the island failed in the resulting caldera with a diameter of almost 10 km, and the water fluttered into her borrowed destruction. The tsunami caused by the explosion (according to some estimates, the wave height reached the one and a half hundred meters!) It passed through all the Aegean Sea, literally devastating the shores of all the islands - especially the crit was especially injured, overnightly lost almost all of his merchant fleet and ports - the main sources of wealth of the Minoan civilization. And the next dust cloud came for several months closed pastures and crops from the sun. Thus, it was the explosion of Santorina that caused a gradual fuss of a powerful civilization and, perhaps, became the basis of the legend of Atlantis, and the island itself was abandoned by people for many centuries. However, now this popular geological and historical monument, a unique evidence of the formation of numerous cultures of the region and just a very picturesque island is quite tightly populated. At the same time, Santorin is one of the largest producers of dry white wines in Greece - it is obliged to his glory to fertile volcanic soils and grapes of the grade "Asirtic".

Traditional Santorina colors - blue, white and ocher. Blue color symbolizes the sky - the dwelling of the gods, white - faith, justice, beauty and justice of people, and red ocher - the color of the earth and volcano - power and natural power. These colors are painted not only at home, but also the church. Each church necessarily has a bell tower. In the morning and in the evening, the melodic chime is distributed along all villages and cities. At 76 square kilometers of the island, the number of churches reaches 352. Most of them were built sailors in honor of the saints of patrons. And now everyone can build their homework, so their number on the island is constantly growing.

The beaches on Santorine spread out from the outside of the island. The sea is exceptionally clean and transparent. Black lava sand and crumb of volcanic pumice - after the beach heels become soft, like a baby.

Main city Islands - often referred to as any other big City Cyclades - Choir. It stretches along the western coast of Santorina, south Cape Tourlos and practically opposite the island of Na-Kamen.

From the tira to the north-west, a picturesque pedestrian walkway runs on the banks of the caldera past the beautiful town Imeroviglion. (Merovigli) and conical rocks Scaren With the Venetian Fortress (1207), and then overlooking the most picturesque settlement on the island, lying on the north-western tip.

The main gates of Santorina - located on southeast coast town Camarion. (Kamari), which has a good port at the same time, and the only airport on the island. The shores here, as well as all the eastern shore, are long and covered with black volcanic sand, which in the summer literally rakes in the sun. Hotels here are much cheaper than in Fire and Ie, besides more comfortable. Tourist infrastructure is developed and modern. Slightly west lie monastery Panayia-episcopy (XI century) - the most important Byzantine monument of the island, as well as excellent canava Roussos Dzerkin And long-stayed village of Ecco-hike. And north-west of Camarion is a small village Meara (Messara) with its numerous churches and cathedrals, literally squeezed into a narrow gorge.

South, between Pyrgos (Pyrgos) and Megalohorion (Megalohorion, it is closer to the West Bank), the most famous wine plants Santorina are scattered - Boutari, Santo, Canava Roussos, Antoniou and Koutsoyianopoulos - in the latter you can also visit Museum of wine (Open daily from 12.00 to 20.00; 4 euros, including tasting).

South, behind the rocky cape Mesa-Vero, lies the resort town Perisa (Perissa), known for its long beach and abundance of cheap rooms (Santorin himself is difficult to call the budget resort - prices here are 1.5 times higher than in Crete). The beach of Perissa pleases the rickens for sunbathing adaptations. These beds are disposed of owners of a neighboring bar: bought a drink - sunbathing boldly. Entertainment on the beaches is enough, do not miss lovers of outdoor activities. Sports games are particularly popular with tourists: beach volleyball and badminton. And romantic lovers come to the beach precisely that under the noise of waves say the most important words to each other.

On the Cape Mesa-Vero itself lies the village Archeyos-Tira, considered the first settlement based on people on the island after a catastrophe (approximately 915 BC). Here you can walk along the serpentine, leading from the Antinea Hotel to the Rock and the Zoodohu-Piyos Church with a small cave, near which one of the few freshwater sources of the island, to the chapel of the IV century n. e. And the bas-reliefs Temenos-Artemidoros (dolphin carved here, the eagle and lion symbolize Poseidon, Zeus and Apollo), to the ruins of Agora and theater.

But the main historical monument is undoubtedly lying on the northern coast of the south-western tip of the town of the town Akrotiri. (Akrotirion, Akrotirion). The settlement of the Mina Epoch detected here during the excavations, completely filled with a layer of volcanic ash, is one of the most vibrant and well-preserved monuments of that time. Two- and three-storey houses with unique frescoes clearly related to Cretan style are not even equal - many of them have been preserved so fully that even paints that are not one thousand years old, almost never faded. Some of the frescoes are currently demonstrated in Athens, although some of these excellent historical monuments can be seen in the collection of the Tira Foundation in the capital of the island. Red Akrotiri Beach consists of pembol and lava. He became famous for the day when an ancient Mine City was discovered on this shore. True, for visiting tourists, these excavations are closed. From the Red Beach to lighthouse Faros On the outskirts - no more than five minutes on a quad bike.

There are two good beaches nearby, and regular boats to the Caldera Palea Camera and Nea-Kamen, regular boats, allow you to swim in mud sources or go into a boat with a transparent bottom over the ancient reefs of the lagoon, among which scientists still hope to find tracks of ancient cities.

Palea Camera and Nea-Kamen

Na-Kamen Island is the same deadly volcano. At the culprit of an ancient tragedy, who destroyed the Minoan civilization, could not only see it, but also to stand at the taper himself. Inquisitive tourists to the volcano brings the old yacht. For a walk along Nea-Kameni, you should take suitable shoes, because the soil is very hot there.

Find the crater of the volcano is not easy, but it is possible - a thin trickle of hydrogen sulfide, which makes his way through the thickness of the earth, it smells awfully. The volcano himself rests at a depth of about 1000 meters. It is not known how much it will sleep - the last activity of the volcano was observed in January 1950. Around lifeless alien scenery.

On the horizon - the neighboring Palea Camera, which appeared 1200 years later, after Na-Kamen, after the next volcanic eruption.

Tiracia

Regular excursions on boats and ferries are also sent to a relatively unspoiled island Tiracia (THIRASSIA), which was once part of Santorina, while the next eruption in the third century BC. e. did not lead to the formation of the Strait in Cape Omos. This is one of the most quiet cike islands with the same dramatic landscapes, as elsewhere on Santorine, but not having neither sandy beaches, no nightlife or banks. But here you can see a colorful village Korfos (Korfos) with its high rocks and a long large-ground beach, a fairly launched village Manolas (Manolas) around higher Point Islands - here you can get acquainted with the life of the islanders in the fact of how it was before the start of the tourist boom, and also climb to the field of profithis-oras-oras church lying on the top (294 meters) and then go down the desert village Cera (Kera) To Kimisis Monastery at the southern tip of the island. In 1867, the Minoan Ruins were excavated by Pumice's career, but today they are practically nothing reminded about them, and the works themselves have long been minimized.

Winemaking Santorina

Grapes - hardly the only culture growing on the island. The Santorinian wines famous for the whole world, who are especially valued in Tsarist Russia, produce already four hundred years here. In the basements of the best winery of the island of Santo Wines, a unique museum is arranged, where all stages of the production of fragrant drink are presented. Tastings are held there.

Locals sell excellent homemade wines on every corner. Traditionally on the island the best is considered white dry and red sweet. Moreover, the latter is made without adding sugar. Due to the strong winds, the scorching sun and the lack of moisture, grapes are grown in a special way: the vine is twisted in the form of low wicker baskets, close to the ground. For sweet wines, grapes are harvested very late when it has already been pretty stripped and become fragrant and pronounced.

Santorini Island is a picturesque archipelago formed by five islands in the Aegean Sea. Once on the main island of Santorini - Tira - you fall into a completely different Greece - a sleek, aristocratic, but at the same time homemade. If you describe the island, only epithets are used in excellent form.

general information

The island of more than 3.5 thousand years, here the traces of the remaining of ancient civilizations have accumulated, which have survived to the present day. However, in such an environment, surrounded by the purest, azure sea, volcanic landscapes time loses relevance, just forget about it. Among the waves of the Aegean Sea is located one of the most mysterious Islands World History - Santorini. His name is shut-off by secrets, because some claim that Fira (the second name of the island) is a lost Atlantis, according to others, is Pompeii Aegean Sea.

The appearance of the island is obliged to eruse the volcano in the distant past. Such a bright appearance of Santorini made it the most famous of the islands of the Kiklada archipelago. He is located near Crete, at the same time it differs straight from all territories - again, thanks to geological morphology. She formed due to the eruption of the volcano, which is now sleeping.

According to the old legend, the island originated from the lump of land, which was obstried by one of the kidnappers of the Golden Rune, Argonaut. The land was presented by the hero of EvuMu himself Triton. In the third millennium BC is the island of the descendants of Argonaut - the Phoenicians. They created the Great Civilization here. The island received its name of Fira because of the rounded form, which he had at that time.

After a half thousand years, the volcanic eruption occurred incredibly power. Lava devastated the fir, most of the territories went under the water. The shape of the island because of this event changed to the crescent.

Many years of territory were empty, however, the new culture began its development. The new awakening of the volcano in the 15th century led to an earthquake, a mined civilization from the face, and with her everything is alive. Archaeologists managed to find evidence of the existence of a great culture. However, there is still a dispute that, it is quite possible, it was the famous Atlantis described by Plato.

Scientists claim to reveal the secret helped exactly the find from Santorini's island. Began archaeological studies Greek SP. Marinaatos. Excavations conducted by him made it possible to detect palaces, frescoes and vases, their stylistics resembling the features of the Minoan civilization. Found items were hidden by a massive layer of ash by eruption. This makes it possible to say that culture died due to volcanic lava, which was covered with a powerful tsunami from above. A huge wave was subsequently transferred to many of the islands, destroying everything that came across.

Executed excavations suggest a scientist that the volcano everacted about 12 times here. Event This happened about once every 20 thousand years, as evidenced by Santorini's soil layers.

Such volcanic activity led to the formation of caldera under water. This boilers appeared when the volcanic vertex fails. The following eruptions were already much less strength, they occurred in the III century BC (Firassia separated), as well as in the II century BC (this eruption led to the appearance of Pallen Kameni).

Later, nea Kameni appeared all the Mediterranean islets, he originated from Lava. All territories are combined into the Kiklada archipelago. The islands survived a lot: after each new volcanic layer and complete destruction, they restored, the culture was re-developed, they were rejected at home. The last eruption occurred in 1956, when Santorini again survived terrible events.
