A 13-meter bowhead whale got stuck in the mouth of the river on Bolshoy Shantar Island in the Khabarovsk Territory, media today. This is how, for example, the Russia-24 TV channel spoke about it.

The Shantar Islands are an archipelago of 2.5 thousand square kilometers in the Sea of Okhotsk.

240 species of birds live here, 30 of which are listed in the Red Book of Russia. On the islands there are rookeries of Red Book seals - sea lions and spotted seals, near the archipelago bowhead whales are regularly spotted. Big Shantar is the largest island of the Shantar archipelago. Together with other islands, it is part of the Shantar Islands National Park.

According to experts, the worst thing is that with his weight he transferred his internal organs to himself. How long he will be able to hold out in such a situation is unknown.

“We have already spoken with scientists who specialize in whales, they are all rather pessimistic,” Dmitry Grankin, deputy director for environmental protection of the Reserve Amur Region, told Vostok-Media-Khabarovsk correspondent.

Keith injures himself.

Rescuers do not have enough equipment, there are only two boats on Bolshoi Shantar. With their help, you can deploy a whale with a kilometer cable. Dmitry Grankin says that even if such a cable were found, hardly anyone would dare to attach it to the tail of a mammal. The whale weighs about 70 tons, its length is about 13 meters.

“The whale constantly beats with its tail, one movement and that’s it. We have no technical means to help him. We thought about moving it with a helicopter, but this threatens to crash the aircraft, ”Dmitry Grankin emphasized.

Scientists doubt that the whale will survive until the morning. “I hope he still makes it to the morning tide. For us, this is a very big problem. In addition to the fact that the animal is under great threat, there is another problem. If it remains so across the mouth, great harm will be done to Lake Bolshoy for a long time, ”concluded Dmitry Grankin.

"We're at dusk. It's getting dark. The water keeps going. Keith doesn't even flinch anymore. Tired. Just lies and sometimes loudly “sighs”. Still no one is doing anything. Everyone just sits on the shore and watches, ”says travel blogger Sergey Dolya, who ended up on Bolshoi Shantar Island as part of the Mamont Cup 2017 expedition.

By the way, the frontman of the Yekaterinburg musical group "Sansara" Alexander Gagarin also participates in the same expedition. They also post pictures of the situation on Instagram.

In the Khabarovsk Territory, since the morning of August 10, they have been deciding how to save a 13-meter bowhead whale on Bolshoi Shantar Island.

The mammal got into the "trap" because of a flock of killer whales. But she cannot turn around and go out to sea on her own, because due to the ebb tide she was aground. Scientists estimate the weight of a whale at about 30-40 tons.

According to the most optimistic forecasts, he can hold out in this situation for a maximum of three days.

Dmitry Grankin, Deputy Director for Environmental Protection of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Zapovednoe Priamurye", commenting on this situation on the air of the TV channel, explained that the whale entered the mouth at around 5 am (August 10) for about a kilometer.

“You can go into the mouth at high tide, and then it bifurcates, and there is a shoal, on which the whale ended up. It turned halfway, but the ebb prevented it, and it got stuck,” says Grankin.

According to him, dragging a whale weighing tens of tons is impossible - the skin will be torn off. Plus, we need equipment that could approach the water, which is also unrealistic.

Now inspectors, employees of the reserve, dozens of volunteer tourists are on duty next to the whale. All of them are trying to alleviate the fate of a stranded whale, which is only half in the water. While waiting for the tide, they hose it down with water.

Experts say the main thing is that his eyes do not dry out. At the same time, volunteers believe that the national park employees are not doing everything possible to alleviate the situation of the whale. In blogs, they write that the animal suffers a lot, bleeds, and small fish have already begun to eat it.

According to the latest data, the whale was still able to independently move to a depth of about 200 meters. Now it is completely in the water, so no more watering is needed.

However, the animal is injured and bleeding. Apparently, the whale scratched hard on the pebble bottom while trying to turn towards the sea.

Killer whale attacks on whales are not uncommon. Their English name at one time came from the Spanish "whale killer".

Killer whales live in packs. And in the same way, with the whole flock, they pounce on a large whale and simply tear it to pieces.

In addition, they also feed on dolphins, seals, penguins, and can also hunt sharks. Killer whales are distributed almost throughout the world's oceans. In Russia, they usually hunt near the Kuril Ridge and the Commander Islands.

The bowhead whale or polar whale is the only species of the suborder of baleen whales that lives in the cold waters of the Northern Hemisphere.

The total number of bowhead whales does not exceed 400 animals.

The maximum length is 20 meters, and the weight of an adult animal is from 75 to 150 tons. Such a whale dives to a depth of 200 meters and can remain under water for up to 40 minutes. Life expectancy is about 40 years. This is the only baleen whale species that spends its entire life in polar waters.

A whale stuck in the mouth of a river in the Khabarovsk Territory is planned to be returned by helicopters to the sea at night.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry is sending a helicopter with rescuers to the island of Bolshoy Shantar in the Khabarovsk Territory to assist in rescuing a bowhead whale stuck in the mouth of the river, RIA Novosti was told in the press service of the Main Directorate of the EMERCOM of the Russian Federation for the Khabarovsk Territory.

During the night tide, a 13-meter bowhead whale entered the mouth of the river flowing from Lake Bolshoy on Bolshoi Shantar Island in the Khabarovsk Territory: the animal cannot turn around or swim into the lake.

Experts hope that the whale intcbatch will be able to leave the river on his own during the night's high tide, but an alternative plan is being developed. In the near future, a helicopter of the Far Eastern Regional Search and Rescue Squad with rescuers and an operational group of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Khabarovsk Territory will fly to Bolshoi Shantar.

The news about a whale stuck on a shallow in a channel of the Bolshoi Lake on the Shantar Islands excited users of social networks today. How exactly the 30-ton whale fell into the trap remains a mystery. National park officials suggest that he could have been chasing a seal or running away from a killer whale, KP writes.

“Regardless of the prerequisites, the animal flew a whole kilometer into the river, from which it has not yet escaped,” says Marina Chesalina, head of the press service of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Reserved Amur Region”.

Judging by the pictures, the stranded whale is still a calf, experts say. Its length is 5-6 meters. A marine mammal ran aground near Bolshoi Shantar Island. The staff of the reserve has already arrived at the scene. The poor fellow is watered from fire pumps to somehow bring him to his senses. After all, the prisoner was seriously injured: he cut his tail against the stones. The water is red with blood, NTV notes.

The first photos of the rescue operation were taken by bloggers who came to the protected areas to admire the local inhabitants and witnessed the events. One of the eyewitnesses told how the hostage of a difficult situation is trying to stay afloat: “The whale is not even twitching anymore. Tired. Just lies and sometimes sighs loudly.
