Heisa - the island of cosmic mystery!

Hayes Island is located far beyond the Arctic Circle and is considered the most extreme point territory of Russia. This unusual place, shrouded in snow and ice, was discovered in 1901 by the Baldwin-Ziegler expedition. But it is named after the American polar explorer A. Hayes.

Stars in the aurora, or weather forecast according to Hayes

50 years after its discovery, a huge observatory was built on the island, the purpose of which was not only to observe the stars, but also to launch meteorological rockets. During the existence of this object, meteorologists made almost 2 thousand successful launches. The study of the sky and weather forecasting did not end here, and over time scientists began to explore ocean depths and seismic activity on earth. Also, the territory of the island is convenient for observing aurora. In the 90s, the enterprise was abandoned, and restoration began only in 2004.

Where life was in full swing and there was civilization

Franz Josef Land, as the island is otherwise called, is never deserted, but it cannot boast of a large population either. Basically, only scientists live here, near the observatory. The settlement is made up of modest wooden houses that surrounded the round freshwater lake Kosmicheskoe. This name did not arise by chance. It is believed that the reservoir acquired this almost ideal geometric shape as a result of a meteorite fall. Considering that the water in the lake is fresh, they even installed a water supply from it. On the territory of the settlement there is a laboratory, a library and even a post office. This is the world's northernmost post office.

The harsh climate of the Arctic

Hayes Island's permafrost reveals itself in endless expanses of snow. Average temperature here it is -12 degrees. Polar nights last 125 days, while polar days last 140. Summer lasts no more than 4 weeks, during which time the air warms up to zero. As many polar scientists say, even the dirt in this place is clean. Due to the low temperature, there are no pathogenic bacteria on Franz Josef Land. By pure chance, scientists discovered a pattern: dogs that were born in this place died within a week upon arrival on the continent. They simply did not develop immunity against infections that Hayes does not have.

In addition to dogs, polar bears are often seen casually strolling on the island. They rarely interact with people, but can sometimes be overly aggressive if they are hungry. Among marine mammals there are seals, bearded seals, harp seals, and walruses. Birds also love these lands, as they are not prevented from nesting here. You can often see the white gull, the glaucous gull. Surprisingly, rarely, plants such as polar poppy, saxifrage, and buttercups are also found. Highest point- ice dome of Hydrographs. Its height is 242 m.

Russian-French science

In direct proximity to Hayes there is an island owned by the French. Scientists from both lands joined forces and began in 1967 to study the influence of the Sun and other cosmic phenomena on atmospheric processes. The MR-12 meteorological rocket was used for the experiments. All tests and scientific work were a great success due to modern equipment. During the heyday of this cooperation, everyone came to Franz Josef Land more researchers together with their families. One of these expeditions was unable to reach the island. The twin-engine IL-14 lost control and landed with its nose directly into the ground. The plane itself, which has been preserved almost in its original form, reminds of this tragedy.

Silent Population

Today there are only four people living on Hays. National Geographic Russia correspondent Andrey Kamenev spoke about this. He visited there in 2012. Meteorologists said that there were five of them, but with one of the participants research work, Mikhail Eremkin, a tragedy happened. Without following safety rules, he went outside the house alone, after which he was attacked polar bear. Former colleagues led the journalist along the path along which the deceased had walked. Today it is a unique landmark.

It's interesting that " local residents“They can easily be called speechless, but this is not due to problems with the speech-motor apparatus. They just don't talk to each other. Based on their individual stories, the correspondent found out that they also celebrate holidays separately. Such an atmosphere, in their opinion, has a beneficial effect on research, since there is no need to be distracted by extraneous factors. Unlike Hayes, on neighboring islands entire families live in the archipelago and even give birth to children. The children receive individual instruction, and then their families send them to the mainland.

Franz Josef Land has only recently begun to recover from desolation. More and more expeditions are sent here to see the most unusual natural phenomena and breathe in the frosty and incredibly fresh air.

Knowing your own elegance gives you a sense of self-confidence. It is important for you to be “well dressed,” smart, respectable. Sometimes your appearance can serve as a kind of shield for you, allowing you to isolate yourself from people with whom communication is difficult. at the moment for some reason it is undesirable for you. At the same time, your appearance, sometimes quite colorful, but always correct, endears you and evokes sympathy.

Compatibility of the name Hayes, manifestation in love

Hayes, for you, marriage symbolizes the beginning of the ascetic path, and your partner must be prepared for the fact that every day you will receive the “moon from the sky.” At first glance, this is wonderful, but there is a small problem: you definitely need the same “moon” in response, since the adequacy of the reaction, gratitude and admiration are necessary for your peace of mind. The slightest doubt that you are selflessly loved and highly valued demoralizes you, and then your carefully built well-being can collapse overnight.

Motivation

Your heart is full of love and compassion for others. The basis of your spiritual aspirations is the desire to protect everyone for whom you can do this from troubles. Even to the detriment of their own interests. To do good and not ask for rewards for it is your choice in any situation.

At first glance, this is the life of a saint. But not everyone enjoys constant care and intrusive expressions of participation. Even the closest people can get tired of everyday care. Moreover, you will suffer, because by relieving them of the need to do at least something on their own, you deprive them of the opportunity to develop, turning them into “plankton”.

This means that sooner or later you will probably hear a reproach. And your confidence that self-sacrifice can really bring the results you expected will be dealt a severe blow. Then instead of satisfaction you will get disappointment.

Therefore, the desire to nurture and protect should be limited within reasonable limits. Remember this, and your peace of mind will be preserved.

One of the islands on Franz Josef Land is the small Heys Island. Named after the American polar explorer Isaac Hayes. Discovered by the Baldwin-Ziegler expedition in 1901. It is located at eighty degrees north latitude, in the harshest conditions of the Northern Hemisphere.

The highest point of Hayes Island is the Hydrograph Ice Dome, located at an altitude of 242 meters. Largest lake Islands – Cosmic. The climate here is not much different from other areas of Franz Josef Land. The air temperature usually does not exceed 0 degrees. June is the warmest month, and the coldest is March. The average temperature for the year is -12.7 degrees Celsius. Strong northeast and southeast winds prevail at a speed of 5-7 m/s. Summer is cloudy and cold.

Since 1957, the Krenkel Observatory has been operating on Hayes Island. From November 1957 to December 1990, 1950 launches of M-100 meteorological rockets were made, the lifting altitude was 200 m. Also on Hayes Island is the northernmost post office in Russia with the address “Arkhangelsk 163100”.

The Arkhangelsk region is famous for its numerous lakes. There are many of them in the Primorsky Territory, which includes many islands among the cold waters of the northern seas. Between the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean is the Franz Josef Land archipelago. It includes a sufficient number of island units, both large and smaller. Some of them are so small that they do not even have their own name, just as the lakes scattered on the surface of the islands remain nameless. But the largest bodies of water still received their own names, such as Cosmic Lake.

The lake is located on Hayes Island, at its extreme northeastern point, not far from Observatory Cape. A large area of the island is often covered with ice. Settlements not here. This territory is interesting only from the point of view of polar research, so there are some premises suitable for temporary residence of visiting scientists.

Peculiarities

The Cosmic Lake is relatively small. Its length is 0.35 kilometers, and its width is only 0.3 kilometers. The surface area of the water surface is 0.105 square kilometers. Due to its almost identical length and width, the reservoir has an almost perfectly round shape, slightly elongated into an oval. The shape of the lake is due to a meteorite that fell here many years ago, in the pit of which water accumulated. According to the degree of mineralization, the lake is fresh. The water in it never completely freezes to the bottom, regardless of the temperature. This happens because there are several sources with warm water closer to the bottom.

The Cosmic Lake is located at an altitude of 6 meters above sea level. The lake is endorheic, that is, no rivers or streams flow from it. Likewise, not a single river flows into the lake. The reservoir is located quite close to the sea, only 100-150 meters. On this piece of land there is the Krenkel Observatory. Wooden houses were built on the shores of the lake, providing temporary housing for polar explorers. A pipeline was drawn to them directly from the lake, since the water there is fresh, clean and quite suitable for drinking. In addition to residential buildings, there is also a research laboratory, a library and a post office, which is the northernmost in the country and has an index of 163100.

The Cosmic Lake received its name due to the events that took place on this territory on October 22, 1957. It was on this memorable day that the first launch of meteorological rockets into space in the history of the USSR took place.

How to get there

The island is difficult to visit. It is extremely difficult to get here on your own. It is possible to reach your destination only as part of a research expedition. In this case, air transport is used, as well as water transport.

In the summer of 1957, the observatory from Tikhaya Bay (Hooker Island) was transferred to Heysa Island due to unrepresentative meteorological observations. (Latitude - 80. 37" north, longitude - 58. 03" eastern).

On Hayes Island, the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI, St. Petersburg) built a new scientific polar observatory “Druzhnaya”.

On October 22, 1957, the first launch of meteorological rockets took place here. In December of the same year, registration of all components of the Earth's electromagnetic field began. Aerological and ozonometric observations began in January 1958.

In 1965, the Druzhnaya GMO from the AARI was transferred to the Dikson Radio Meteorological Center (RMC) of the Office for the Study of the Arctic and Antarctic.

On Heiss Island there was the only geophysical observatory in Russia in the region of the geomagnetic polar cap.

In 1972, Druzhnaya was renamed the Observatory named after. E.T. Krenkel, worked until 2001 and was mothballed due to a fire that occurred on September 26 in a service and residential building.

In June 2004, a site was determined for the construction of a new service and residential complex for the station named after. Krenkel, restored this year.

Climate on Heisa Island is not much different from other areas of the FJL archipelago. The air temperature on the island also practically does not go beyond zero degrees. The warmest month is July, with average monthly temperature air +0.2 C; the coldest is March with a temperature of -24.4 C. Average annual temperature air is -12.7 C, relative humidity is 88%. 304 mm of precipitation falls per year. Winds from the northeast and south-eastern directions at a speed of 5-7 m/sec. Summer is cloudy and cold.

Physiographic description

Hayes Island was discovered in 1901 by the Baldwin-Ziegler expedition and named after the famous American explorer of Greenland and the Canadian North, Isaac Hayes (1832-1881).

The island is located in the central part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. From the north and northeast the island is washed by the waters of the Ermak Strait, from the south. Marcoma Strait, and from the east. Australian Channel. Behind them, to the north, 6 km, is Salisbury Island, to the northeast, 10 km. Vinera Island, 8 km southeast. Komsomolsky Islands, and to the south 6 km. Gallya Island.

Hayes Island is small in size, approximately 10x15 km.

Its relief is slightly hilly, with steep and deep banks, with the exception of the southern ones, which are flatter.

OGMS is located in the north-eastern part of the island, on the protruding Cape Observatorsky, near a large (300x350 m) ice-free bottom freshwater lake. With the start of the launch of the first meteorological rockets lake got the name Space. The nearest small (1x2.5 km) island of Fersman is located 1.5 km west of the cape.

The bridge between the lake and the coastline, on which the observatory village is located, has a width of different places from 150 to 300 m.

5 km west of the observatory there is an ice dome (locally called "Dome of Hydrographers") height 242 m above sea level. Between them, from southeast to northwest, stretches a ridge of basalt rocks up to 10 m high above the surrounding area. Near the GMO the relief is weakly dissected, and to the west it is flat. To the south and southwest it has a gently hilly character.

The soils are frozen by permafrost. The active layer is no more than 30 cm.

The vegetation of the island is located in patches, mainly on the southern slopes of the hills, in the form of mosses and lichens. Polar poppies are occasionally seen.

There are no settlements on the island.
