The Jewish Museum in Eisenstadt is located in the Wertheimer house, which belonged to the famous Hungarian rabbi. The museum was opened in 1972 on a large area and is divided into a number of exhibition halls. On the 1st floor of the museum is a synagogue, one of the few that did not suffer during the Jewish pogroms in 1938.

The museum offers an exposition that provides historical information on the history of Jewish settlers in Burgenland. A special place in the exposition is occupied by the memorial hall, which was created in memory of the seven Jewish communities of Burgenland.

Currently, the museum houses a library containing about 10 thousand volumes. Mostly these are books of the 18th century. The library also has a significant collection of facsimile publications.

Forchtenstein Castle

Forchtenstein Castle holds one of the best and most expensive private weapons collections in Austria, but besides military trophies and weapons, there are many family portraits of Esterhazy that acquired the castle in the 17th century.

Among the expensive exhibits are presented the jewels of the princely family of Esterhazy, family heirlooms and a collection of furniture of that time.

It is noteworthy that today visitors can not only visit the medieval era, but also celebrate their solemn holiday, for example, a wedding or a birthday within the walls of Forchtenstein Castle. The Leopoldin room, front hall and fireplace room are often rented by sophisticated lovers of medieval romance.

Esterhazy Palace

Esterhazy Castle is a magnificent building, now a national museum, with elements of neoclassicism and baroque, located in Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland. The history of the building begins from the XIV century, when it was built in the form of a fortress, in the middle of the XVIII century the building was donated to one of the richest princes N. Esztergazi, who was later nicknamed the Great, it was he who built his own Versailles on the site of the fortress - a copy of the French palace ensemble Louis XIV.

Today, Estergazi Castle has 200 rooms and 6 halls, among which the Haydn Hall is considered the most luxurious hall with good acoustics. Currently, symphonic music concerts are regularly held in this hall, while the musicians are dressed in costumes from the time of Haydn. One of the most beautiful parks in Europe adjoins the castle, where you can see grottoes and greenhouses, fountains and statues, which together make up a magnificent sight!

National Park Neusiedlersee - Zeevinkel is located on the border of Austria and Hungary, on the Austrian side it is located on the federal state of Burgenland. This territory has been protected since 1932, however, it received the status of a national park only in 1993, before that it was considered a simple reserve.

The main attraction in the park is the shallow lake Neusiedlersee, which has become a nesting site for many aquatic and near-water birds. This lake is the fourth largest territory in all of Central Europe, it has long been a popular tourist destination and is recognized as a unique biosphere reserve. Tourists can go fishing, sailing and windsurfing here.

In this national park, various landscapes are found: swamps, meadows, reed beds and typical Central European steppes. Among the flora of Lake Neusiedlersee there are many species of reeds. In total, about 300 species inhabit the national park; 15 species of fish are described in the lake water.

Lake Neusiedler See

Lake Neusiedler is located on the border of Austria with Hungary and is one of the most popular natural attractions of the country. The total area of the lake is about 315 square kilometers, and the greatest depth varies about two meters. Neusiedler See is one of the largest lakes in Central Europe.

On the Austrian side, the lake is surrounded by picturesque hills covered with dense forest, on the south side there are salt marshes. The coastline is heavily indented by bays, some of which are quite deep.

Thanks to the beautiful scenery, Lake Neusiedler is of great interest to tourists who prefer ecological trails and immersion in the natural world. 15 species of fish, numerous species of microorganisms and rare insects live in the waters of the lake. Here you can observe in natural conditions over three hundred species of birds - nesting and migratory.

In the summer, Lake Neusiedler is very popular among vacationers. The Austrians even call it the Vienna Sea, since there are plenty of beaches and small islands, and the water temperature reaches +30 degrees. In addition to sunbathing and swimming on the lake, you can go windsurfing and sailing, but this is not always convenient due to the small depth of the lake.

Castle Hotel Bernstein

Bernstein Castle, the first mention of which appears in written letters of the 13th century, served as a border fortress, which witnessed numerous battles. It is located on a picturesque hill near Lake Neusiedler See.

After the Almazi family bought the castle in 1892 and began renting it out, in 1953 it acquired the status of a hotel, but despite this, it almost completely retained its original appearance.

Inside each room of the castle you can see antique furniture, tiled stoves and antique fireplaces, which heat the castle, as well as other interior items, among which there are even books. The castle also has a Renaissance-style jousting hall, where breakfast and dinner are currently held under natural light and by candlelight.

In addition to the amazing interior, the castle also has some surprises. According to a popular legend, in the castle you can find ghosts of Katharina Frescobaldi, nicknamed "the white woman" who died in the castle in 1480, and the son of one of the first owners of the castle - Johann Ivan, who died in 1279.

Lokenhouse Castle

Lokenhaus Castle, built around 1200, gained its fame largely due to the well-preserved knight's hall. Therefore, many call it the "last knight's castle of Austria." It is located in the southeastern part of the city.

The castle, the architecture of which combines the features of the Gothic and Romanesque styles, was created with the aim of protecting Pannonia from the raids of the Mongols. The castle was owned by many famous personalities: Henry II, Emperor Maximilian II, and after the castle was destroyed by Charles I in 1337, it was restored by Francis II.

To date, in addition to its knight's hall, a chapel and an underground crypt have been preserved in their original form. The walls of the castle are decorated with 13th-century frescoes. In its interior you can see antique furniture and other antiques. Of particular interest are the castle kitchen, the armory and the room of the prince.

Currently, the castle regularly hosts seminars and various cultural events, as well as a hotel and restaurant.

Events

Burgenland hosts many cultural events that classical music lovers will appreciate: the Austrian Seefestpiele Operetta Festival, the Opernfestpiele Opera Festival, the Haydnfestival, the Kammermusikfest Chamber Music Festival and the Lisztfestival.

The first mention of the Güssing castle dates back to 1157, when it was still wooden. In 1242, the castle was taken from the local feudal lord King Bela III and built a massive stone structure. Today, theater performances and concerts are held here, and the chapel is used for wedding ceremonies.

Eastern Region of Austria

Burgenland is located on the eastern edge of the country. This is the youngest and fewest land in Austria. Before World War I, the land was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this land was transferred to Austria under the Saint-Germain Peace Treaty of 1919.

Burgenland is an agricultural region where excellent crops of wheat, corn, vegetables and grapes are harvested. The local wine and canned fruits and vegetables are in great demand throughout Europe.

Burgenland is located in the Danube basin and its large tributary, Rab, flowing through the land. The terrain is characterized by great diversity: mid-altitude mountains are replaced by small hills that turn into a plain.

The main natural attraction of Burgenland is the 35-kilometer-long lake Neusiedler See, it occupies a large area, but rather small. From Neusiedler See to Vienna is only 40 km, it is a favorite vacation spot for residents of the Austrian capital, they call it the Vienna Sea. Its shores in many places are hidden by wide and dense reed thickets. The lake and its environs are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. They are the main part of the only national park of Burgenland Neusiedler See - Zevinkel (Lake District), which occupies the territory on both sides of the border between Hungary and Austria. The park is protected by rare plants of reed thickets, where more than 250 species of waterfowl live.

Burgenland became famous as a very musical land. Its capital is Eisenstadt - the birthplace of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). On the street bearing his name is the house-museum of the great composer. Every year, a festival of his name takes place in the castle of Esterházy: at the court of these Hungarian princes, Haydn served as bandmaster for 30 years.

In the town of Raiding, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was born - the future Hungarian composer and virtuoso pianist. In the house where he was born, his museum is now located.

Famous festivals are held in Burgenland, gathering hundreds of thousands of listeners: the Wiesen Jazz Festival, the Morbisch Opposition Festival.

Burgenland stretched a narrow strip along the border with Hungary. Such outlines of this Austrian land were the result of the will of the people of the historical region in 1921.

All this land in the past was the personal property of the Hungarian princes, whose concern for the defense of their possessions was expressed in the continuous construction of castles for several centuries.

The main city of Burgenland - Eisenstadt - belonged to both Hungarian and Austrian rulers in its history, therefore, there remained buildings reflecting the influence of both cultures. In the west of Schlosspark stands the magnificent castle of the princes of Esterhazy. In the XIII century. at the site of the current building was a Gothic fortress. At the beginning of the XVII century. it became the property of Esterhazy and was rebuilt anew in the Baroque style, and in the XVIII century. - in the style of classicism.

Further south are two more important sights of the city - the town hall and St. Martin's Cathedral, where organ music festivals are held.

In the west of the city, the old Jewish quarter Unterberg with a cemetery has been preserved, where they began to bury from the 17th century, when Viennese Jews received permission to settle in Eisenstadt and the surrounding area. During World War II, gravestones were used to build anti-tank ditches; the cemetery was restored after 1945.

There are many castles throughout Burgenland, one of the most famous and oldest in this land - Güssing, built in the 12th century. on top of an extinct volcano. It is surrounded by vineyards and belongs to the Battiani family, which has owned it for 500 years. In 1524, the Habsburgs in recognition of the merits of Count Battiani in victory over the Turks gave him this castle.

On the border with Hungary is the mighty Lokenhaus Castle, built around 1200 in order to protect Pannonia from the Mongol nomads. In the Middle Ages, it was one of the main castles of the Knights Templar, in which the knight's hall was preserved in excellent condition. Then he was owned by Henry II, Emperor Maximilian I.

In the XVII century. in Forchtenstein, the princes of Esterházy built a powerful castle according to the Italian design with a 50-meter main tower - bergfried. Its premises house collections of weapons, banners and paintings, as well as an exhibition of trophies captured during the wars with the Turks. A well of 142 m deep was dug up by Turkish prisoners in the castle.

Curious facts

The officially announced unification of Burgenland with Austria in August 1921 almost led to a new war. As soon as the Austrian police and border guards entered the territory, which had previously been Hungarian, the Hungarian government advanced an army against them. The reason was that historically Germans and Hungarians compactly lived in Burgenland, and Austria laid claim to the whole territory. The fighting was prevented when the parties agreed to a referendum. It took place in December 1921. Following its results, part of the territories of Burgenland with the predominant Hungarian population, including the capital Sopron (Edenburg), remained in Hungary. Only that part of historical Burgenland was added to Austria, where the majority were Germans.

The water level in Lake Neusiedler See periodically falls or rises. It also happened that it completely dried out. Back in 1956, a joint Austro-Hungarian commission was established to control the water level in the lake. Its flow is regulated, but, despite this, it is not possible to completely avoid fluctuations in water level. The problem with the protection of the lake and its surroundings is that they are privately owned by 1,200 owners, mainly local farmers, who receive annual compensation for not using these lands for economic purposes, but not all obey this rule.

The first written mention of Eisenstadt dates back to 1118. Then the city was called Kastrum Ferreum, which is translated from Latin as "iron fortress". Its current name is a direct translation of the Latin name into German.

Composer Joseph Haydn passed away and was originally buried in Vienna. In 1820, it was decided to move the composer's ashes from the capital's cemetery to Eisenstadt and bury them in the Bergkirche cemetery, which has since been called the Haydn Church.

    ■ During the Second World War, German troops, trying to impede the advancement of the Soviet army, created in Burgenland one of the most complex and large minefield systems. Most of them have not fulfilled their functions. Their schemes were lost, and mine clearance continued until the end of the 20th century.

Burgenland is a land located in the east of the country, the youngest and least numerous land in Austria. Before World War I, the land was part of the Kingdom of Hungary.

The pearl of Burgenland is considered to be the unique reed-covered lake of Neusiedler See (German: Neusiedler See), which, despite its shallow depth (not more than 1.8 m), is the largest lake in Europe and a favorite vacation spot of Austrians and visitors. Two-thirds of tourists coming to Burgerland travel to this lake. The water in the lake is slightly salted, but, despite this, many different types of freshwater fish live in it. The reeds that grow around the lake are home to a huge number of rare birds and insects. The territory of the lake is a nature reserve, which in 1993 received the status of the National Park Neusiedlersee - Zeevinkel (German: Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel). In 2001, the Neusiedlersee-Zeevinkel Park was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Due to the unique climate with a large number of sunny days a year, Burgenland became one of the most important wine-growing regions in Austria. The area of vineyards exceeds 16,500 ha. The most famous are the following white wines: Welchriesling and Weißburgunder, red wines Zweigelt, Saint-Laurent and Blaufrankisch. It also produces the famous ice wine (Eiswein).

The city of Wiesen hosts many music festivals that gather up to 100 thousand visitors. This is the Wiesen Jazz Festival in July, the rock festival “Two Days a Week”

Along with the classical operettas of Strauss, Lehar and Kalman, modern musicals are performed there.

On the territory of the land there are beautiful ancient castles and palaces - the Forchtenstein fortress belonging to the Estherhazy family, the medieval Gussing castle, the Knight's castle Lokenhaus - Lokenhaus Burg, the ruins of the fortress in Landze, Schleining, the Halburn baroque palace.
