Over the past ten years (2009-2018), 10 major disasters related to our country have occurred. This sample included planes of Russian airlines that crashed abroad. Foreign aircraft that crashed in Russia were also taken into account.

According to Wikipedia, the cumulative death toll was 750 people. All these crashes were widely covered in the media, leaving a heavy mark on the heart of every Russian citizen. In most cases, the investigation into the causes of the tragedies has already been completed, but for several accidents investigations and examination of evidence are still ongoing.

List of the largest air disasters over 10 years:

  • death of the presidential aircraft TU-154M near Smolensk (2010);
  • Tu-134 crash near Petrozavodsk (2011);
  • crash of the Yak-42D plane near Yaroslavl (2011);
  • ATR-72 plane crash near Tyumen (2012);
  • Boeing-737 crash in Kazan (2013);
  • Airbus A321 crash over the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt (2015);
  • Boeing-737 crash in Rostov-on-Don (2016);
  • Tu-154 crash near Sochi (2016);
  • the death of an An-148 in the Moscow region (2018);
  • An-26 crash near the Khmeimim base in Syria (2018).

Plane crashes of 2010-2013

The crash of the presidential airliner near Smolensk

In a plane crash near Smolensk, which occurred on April 10, 2010, the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, representatives of the country's leadership, the armed forces and public organizations, famous religious figures, members of Parliament. They all flew to Russia to honor the memory of the victims of the Katyn massacre.

The presidential plane crashed while landing in difficult weather conditions. The accident killed 96 people - this is a record number in the statistics of all disasters in which top officials of states died.

The investigation of the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) lasted almost a year. In January 2011, the main reasons leading to the tragedy were announced:

  • aircraft landing under weather conditions below the minimum permissible values;
  • the airliner going beyond the minimum descent altitude while simultaneously exceeding speed;
  • psychological pressure on the crew from the Polish leadership;
  • pilots ignoring warning systems about dangerous proximity to the ground.
  • insufficient training of the crew and, in particular, the commander for landing in difficult weather conditions.

The Polish side did not agree with all the arguments of the IAC, so in July 2011 it initiated its own investigation, but its results were soon annulled. According to a re-inspection launched in 2016, the Polish commission named the cause of the disaster as the explosion of the plane’s wing and the deliberate misleading of pilots by air traffic controllers at the Smolensk airfield. Russia categorically rejected these accusations.

Disaster near Petrozavodsk

On June 20, 2011, the Tu-134 airliner of RusAir airlines followed the Moscow-Petrozavodsk route. During the landing approach in poor visibility conditions, the plane hit trees, collided with the ground and caught fire. At the time of the disaster, 44 people died, three later died in the hospital, five were saved.

The main reason for the crash was the uncoordinated actions of the crew and outdated aircraft equipment that controlled the landing approach. This tragedy is similar in circumstances to the disaster near Smolensk.

Aviation experts say that the largest number of accidents occur during takeoff or landing of aircraft. Just during takeoff on September 7, 2011, the Yak-42D airliner crashed while performing chartered flight from Yaroslavl to Minsk with the Lokomotiv hockey team on board. Unable to gain altitude, the aircraft, after a few seconds of flight, touched a radio beacon and crashed into the bank of the Tunoshonka River.

Plane crash in Yaroslavl

44 people died: almost the entire main team of the Lokomotiv team, its coaching staff and staff, as well as 8 crew members. The service engineer managed to survive aviation equipment Alexander Sizov. Based on the results of the investigation, it was established that the tragedy was caused by uncoordinated actions of the crew during the takeoff run and takeoff of the aircraft.

A UTair airline ATR-72 crashed on April 2, 2012 near the village of Gorkovka near Tyumen. He was heading to Surgut, but managed to stay in the air for less than a minute. 33 people died, 10 were saved.

The development of an emergency situation on board was caused by icing of the aircraft body, which was not eliminated during preparation for the flight. As a result of deterioration in aerodynamic characteristics, the airliner went into stall mode, which the crew did not notice in time.

Boeing-737 crash in Kazan

In 2013, the worst air disaster in Russia was the crash of a Boeing 737 during landing at Kazan airport. The plane belonged to Tatarstan Airlines, there were 50 people on board - all of them died. Among the factors that led to the unfavorable development of the air incident, the IAC named insufficient flight training of the crew, including for flying a Boeing-737, improper work with navigation equipment, a formal approach to testing the knowledge of airline pilots.

Plane crashes of 2015-2018

Black day in history Russian aviation became October 31, 2015, when the largest disaster in Russian history occurred in terms of the number of victims. On the Airbus A321 airliner of the Kogalymavia company, tourists were returning home after a vacation in sunny Egypt. The takeoff from the airport in Sharm el-Sheikh took place as usual, but after 23 minutes the plane stopped communicating. Its wreckage was found on Sinai Peninsula. All 224 people on board, including 25 children, were killed.

Tragedy in the Sinai Peninsula

The destruction of the plane in the air was the result of a terrorist attack - a bomb was planted in the tail section. ISIS militants claimed responsibility. On November 16, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin suspended air service with Egypt.

Airplane FlyDubai airlines as a result of an unsuccessful approach, it crashed at Rostov-on-Don airport on the night of March 19, 2016. 62 people died, no one managed to survive. A preliminary investigation revealed errors in the actions of the crew, which led to a sharp loss of altitude and a collision of the aircraft with the ground. The final report of the IAC has not yet been published.

Search operation in the Black Sea after the crash of the Tu-154

Shortly before the new year 2017, another tragedy occurred in the air. On December 25, 2016, the Tu-154 airliner of the Russian Ministry of Defense landed in Sochi to refuel en route to the Syrian city of Latakia. After leaving the airport, he stayed in the air for just over a minute and then crashed into the Black Sea. On board were artists and leaders of the Alexandrov Academic Ensemble, 9 journalists from federal channels, and public figure Elizaveta Glinka. The investigation into the crash has been extended until March 2019; according to unconfirmed information, its cause was the loss of spatial orientation by the aircraft commander.

Saratov Airlines plane

The year 2018 was marked by two major air accidents. In February 2018, a Saratov Airlines plane crashed in the Moscow region, killing 71 people. About a month later - on March 6 - an An-26 military plane crashed near the Khmeimim base. The victims of the tragedy were 39 people, of which 33 passengers were servicemen of the Russian army. These two accidents are under investigation and the results will be published later.

Reliability of Russian airlines

Based on statistical data for 20 years and a comprehensive assessment of other criteria, the authoritative European Aviation Safety Agency has compiled a rating of the most reliable air carriers in Russia. It included 3 major airlines:

The undisputed leader is Ural Airlines. Over its twenty-year history, the company has not had a single major incident with casualties or injuries.

The carrier S7 Airlines, previously called Sibir, also has good statistics. There are 3 major accidents in its history:

  • the crash of the Tel Aviv-Novosibirsk flight in October 2001, which was shot down during a Ukrainian air defense exercise, killing 78 people;
  • a terrorist attack on board a Tu-154B2 aircraft flying from Moscow to Sochi on August 24, 2004, killed 51 people;
  • crash of the A-310 plane on July 9, 2006 in Irkutsk, which led to the death of 125 people.

Aeroflot airline has existed since the times of the USSR, for a total of almost 100 years. During this time, she experienced many incidents and disasters. However, in modern history Russian aviation has a minimal number of accidents. The last major disaster dates back to October 25, 2000, when an Il-18D cargo and passenger plane crashed at Batumi airport while landing. On board there were military personnel heading to 12 military base Groups of Russian troops in Transcaucasia, and members of their families, including 7 children. A total of 84 people died. The tragedy was caused by navigation errors by the crew, disruptions in the work of the dispatcher, and a malfunction of ground radio equipment.

Causes of plane crashes in Russia

To summarize, we can identify several reasons why planes most often crash in Russia:

  • insufficient level of training of crew members;
  • depreciation of the fleet of airliners used in civil aviation;
  • poor aircraft maintenance;
  • Act of terrorism.

The situation with plane crashes in Russia has hardly changed in 10 years. Our country still remains among the leaders in the number of plane crashes. Let's hope that domestic airlines will draw the right conclusions from the statistics and begin to improve the quality of flight training of crews and the technical safety of aircraft.

Many people prefer to get to this or that region using an airliner, because traveling by air is much more convenient and faster than traveling by train. According to statistics every 2-3 seconds an airplane lands and takes off around the world. Should you give in to fear when you board an airplane? How often do planes crash? Such questions always plague passengers, especially those who rarely fly on an aircraft.

Everyone fears for their life, so it is not surprising why such questions arise. If you watch the news, which constantly talks about some kind of disaster, often related to air travel, then the desire to go somewhere immediately disappears. Of course, there is always danger. Even while staying at home, there is a risk of death, for example, from a gas leak. Thus, to fly or not to fly aircraft is a very controversial issue and here everyone decides for himself how best to act. In order to understand how many airliners crash, let's look at the statistics.

How many planes crash per year is a question that interests many people, even those who are not planning to fly. The following data can be provided:

  1. Statistics show that about 10,000 airliners take off into the sky every day.
  2. Approximately 4.5 billion people fly on airplanes – that’s more than half the world’s population.
  3. Of these, about 1,000 people die in plane crashes.
  4. For 100 years passenger aviation 150,000 people died.

This figure is several times less than the number of victims in road accidents per month. So, what is the safest way to travel? The answer is obvious. People die in road accidents much more often, so driving in cars is much more dangerous to life than flying in airplanes.

According to statistics, since 2009 there have been 107 plane crashes, killing 3,245 passengers.

How often do planes crash in Russia?

Unfortunately, our country occupies a leading position in the ranking of countries that have suffered greatest number aircraft accidents. This is due to the fact that Russia is the largest power in the world. If we take statistics from 2009, then the largest number of accidents involving airliners occurred in the Russian Federation - 38. 378 people died in them. Next comes America, where 11 incidents have occurred over the past 6 years. If we take into account the data for the entire existence of civil aviation, then the United States of America occupies first place.

  • Russia (38 accidents);
  • USA (11 for this period);
  • Ukraine (7 in 6 years);
  • Congo (6 over the same period);
  • Germany (4 disasters in 2010).

Which planes crash most often?

If we talk about which planes crash most often, here we need to give a rating of the most dangerous airliners. So the list is:

  1. Boeing 737. This passenger plane was recognized as the most dangerous, as several plane crashes occurred on it.
  2. IL-76. A terrible disaster happened on this aircraft 13 years ago and claimed many lives.
  3. Tu-154. There were also a lot of accidents on it.
  4. Airbus A310. The last disaster was this year, which claimed more than 150 lives and only one girl managed to survive.
  5. McDonnell-Douglas DC-9. It has not been produced for many years, but ready-made aircraft fly quite often. During the entire period of existence on board of this aircraft only 44 people died.

Compared to the years of the last 20th century, the number of plane crashes, alas, has increased. Planes crash for various reasons. This could be a malfunction of the airliner itself, weather conditions or human error. It is difficult to say unequivocally whether planes crash often. Compared to a road accident, it is much safer to travel on an aircraft. But in general, you shouldn’t be afraid of airplanes, because on the ground the risk of dying is much greater than in the air.

Every day, about 100 thousand aircraft take off and approximately the same number make a successful landing. At the same time, the statistics of fatalities increases by no more than 1000 per year - this is comparatively less compared to those killed in road accidents in just a month around the world.

Statistics of plane crashes in Russia

Speaking about our country, it is with bitterness that we have to admit that over the past six years we have taken first place in the world in the number of plane accidents.

So during this time, 38 plane crashes occurred in Russia, in which 378 people died, while in the United States there were only 11 plane accidents.

Airplane crash statistics by airline

Which airlines had the most accidents? To answer this question we need to rank airlines based on the number of plane crashes.

Turkish Airlines

The most widespread and popular (especially among Russian tourists) the air carrier has not encountered an air accident since the seventies of the last century, but a series of small incidents, as well as a 2009 crash near Dutch airport Schiphol, which claimed nine lives, significantly tarnished the airline's reputation.

China Airlines

The Taiwanese airline is considered one of the most unsafe in Asia.

Over the past thirty years, about 755 people have died in accidents involving the planes of this air carrier, which gives reason to suspect this company of an unprofessional approach to the issue of the safety of its customers.

Korean Airlines

The largest air carrier in South Korea spent more than a billion US dollars on various passenger amenities. The ships of this company constantly get into some small accidents, fortunately, so far there are no casualties. The last tragic incident occurred back in 1997.

Saudi Arabian Airlines

Main carrier Saudi Arabia. Since the year 2000, it has had a reputation as a not very safe company; various incidents often occur with the aircraft of this carrier, although only one person died in them (in a crush that occurred during the evacuation), the frequency of various incidents involving aircraft of this company is very alarming.

Skywest Airlines

A well-known American airline specializing in local transportation. After the 1990s, which dealt a serious blow to the company's reputation, it was only marked by the 2008 disaster in San Antonio. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the carrier's reputation was dealt a serious blow.

South African Airways

South Africa's largest airline, specializing in domestic and international flights. The company's reputation was ruined by a failed terrorist from Zimbabwe who hijacked a plane belonging to the carrier in 2006. No one was injured as a result of the incident, and although responsibility lies with the airport security service, this did not save the carrier’s reputation from a serious blow.

Aeroflot plane crash

Several dozen airlines are registered in our country. To determine their reliability and safety, a company is assessed according to various criteria, one of which is the technical safety of aircraft. The European Aviation Safety Agency has compiled a rating of the most reliable air carriers, the list of which includes the domestic company Aeroflot.

The company was founded in 1923. After the collapse of the USSR, many small carriers separated from it. In 1992, Aeroflot-Russian International Airlines JSC was created, which marked the beginning modern history airlines. Today Aeroflot is the largest air carrier in Russia. During the period from 1992 to the present, there have been 4 plane crashes that have claimed lives. There is also information about 5 more accidents, which, fortunately, resulted in no casualties.

The most famous disaster that occurred in the entire history of the airline is the tragedy near Mezhdurechensk. In the spring of 1994, a passenger plane en route from Moscow to Hong Kong crashed. During the investigation, it turned out that the crash was due to the fault of the aircraft commander. The man put his fifteen-year-old son at the helm. This disaster claimed the lives of 75 people.

When traveling to another country, people are interested not only in the reliability of airlines, but also in the safety of the aircraft themselves. Therefore, it would not be superfluous to give a rating of the most unreliable and dangerous aircraft.

The Boeing 737 was recognized as one of the dangerous aircraft, since most of the accidents occurred on this type of aircraft.

IL 76 is also considered an unsafe aircraft, since it was on this ship that a major disaster occurred 13 years ago, which claimed many lives

TU 154 was recognized as very dangerous and unreliable; many accidents and emergency situations also occurred on this airliner.

The Airbus A 310 is also notorious; it was on this ship that a disaster occurred on June 30, 2009, which claimed more than 150 lives.

McDonnell-Douglas DC 9, this type of aircraft has not been produced for a long time and is out of production, but during its entire existence there have been several accidents resulting in the death of 44 people.

2016 turned out to be the busiest year in terms of aviation accidents. This conclusion can be reached by referring to the statistics of plane crashes that occurred during this period.

On February 24, a DHC-6 passenger plane crashed in Nepal; there were 20 passengers and 3 crew members on board. As a result of the disaster, no one managed to survive.

A month later, on March 9, AN 26 crashed in Bangladesh, the plane fell into the sea. There were 4 people on board, all of them were citizens of Ukraine. As a result, three people died, and only one managed to survive.

On the night of March 19 of the same year, a Boeing 737 plane crashed in Rostov-on-Don while climbing, the airliner began a sharp descent and crashed onto the airport runway. There were 55 people and 7 crew members on board. As a result of the plane crash, everyone on board died.

Two months later, on May 18, AN 12 B crashed in Dwyer. There were 9 people on board. As a result of the crash, 7 people died, only two technicians managed to survive.

The next day, May 19, another disaster occurred when an Airbus A 320 crashed into the Mediterranean Sea. All 66 people (56 passengers, 10 crew members) on board died.

Two months later, on July 1, while extinguishing forest fires, due to poor visibility, the transport plane IL 76 of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations crashed. All 10 crew members on board died.

Six months later, on 28 November, a BAe 146 crashed in Colombia due to fuel shortage. There were 77 people on board. As a result of the incident, 71 people died and only 6 people were saved.

A month later, on December 7, an ATR 42 plane crashed near the city of Havelian. All 47 people on board were killed.

On December 25 of the same year, a major disaster occurred: the TU 154 aircraft of the Russian Air Force, as a result of an error by the crew commander during landing, crashed and was completely destroyed. All 92 people on board were killed.

In general, looking at the statistics, we can conclude that traveling by plane is much safer than by land transport According to calculations, the probability of dying in a plane crash is 1:8,000,000. Therefore, you should not be afraid to fly on airliners, because the risk of dying on the ground is much higher than in the air.

Plane crash statistics for 2017

Over the past months of this year, there have been only 4 plane crashes, which is significantly less than in 2016.

On January 16, a Boeing 747 crashed while landing. As a result of the incident, 39 people were killed and 14 were injured.

Three months later, on March 20, while landing, an accident occurred with the AN 26 aircraft. As a result of the incident, 37 people were injured.

On April 29, AN 26 crashed. There were 8 people on board. Everyone on board died.

Three months later, on June 7, the Y8 airliner crashed, half an hour after the plane took off, the airliner crashed into the Andaman Sea. There were 122 people on board. As a result of the disaster, no one managed to survive.

Thanks to the media, the slightest incident with air transport becomes known not only in the event area, but also in other countries. Because of this, many people are afraid to use aircraft, considering them unreliable. However, aircraft statistics show that the cause of accidents in 80% of cases is the human factor.

Why do planes crash?

About 15% of plane crashes are due to technical problems. Statistics of aircraft crashes show that both factors are closely interrelated. After all, no matter how experienced the pilot may be, in the event of serious equipment malfunctions, all his knowledge and efforts may be useless, especially in older models. shows that an incident can happen at any time. Experts have derived approximate percentages:

  • during loading – 5%;
  • during takeoff - 17%;
  • during the climb – 8%;
  • when decreasing – 3%;
  • during approach – 7%;
  • during landing – 51%.

According to statistics, aircraft crashes due to malfunctions during flight account for 6% of the total number of accidents. In other cases, there are other reasons (for example, terrorist attacks). Most accidents happen during landing. But it’s not just scheduled air transport landings that are taken into account here. Often the crew asks permission to land the car due to a malfunction of the mechanism in order to avoid tragic consequences. For example, birds quite often get into the engine, which can lead to a fire. An analysis of the statistics of falling aircraft shows that birds are considered the main enemy of aircraft in the sky.

Technical problems are not the only reason for unscheduled aircraft landings. According to statistics, forced landings of aircraft due to deterioration climatic conditions far from uncommon. An unscheduled landing may occur due to sudden health problems of a passenger or crew member. Airplane statistics also recorded several cases of forced landings due to quarrels between passengers.

Airplane crash statistics

Airlines are doing everything possible to make flights as safe as possible. Statistics of plane crashes in the world recorded 9 cases in 2017. This does not include military and small aircraft, including personal aircraft. A total of 67 people died.

In 2017, aircraft crash statistics in Russia decreased by 53%. Quantity deaths aircraft passengers decreased by 81%. Comparative:

Statistics of plane crashes in Russia have identified three federal districts where plane crashes most often occur:

  1. Southern – 24%.
  2. Far Eastern – 24%.
  3. Central – 17%.

It is difficult to determine when a tragic event will occur. However, over the past fifty years, the safety of air travel has increased 482 times. Airplane statistics show that 50 years ago the probability of a passenger dying in a plane crash was 1:264 thousand. Today the figure has decreased to 1:127.5 million.

Airplane flight statistics demonstrate a more trusting attitude of citizens towards air transport. Every year the number of people wishing to use this method of transportation increases. Last year alone, the number of passengers exceeded 1 billion.

The following models are planned to be released in the near future:

  1. IL-114.
  2. IL-96.
  3. Sukhoi Superjet 100.

There are also improvements in helicopter production. MI-26, 28 and 35 are in no way inferior to foreign competitors.

Among military equipment The PAK FA fighter and PAK DA bomber are being actively developed.

Flight costs

Many Russian airlines use old transport. The cost of flights is often unreasonably high. on plane tickets shows that flying abroad is much cheaper.
