The architectural complex of the island "New Holland" was built in 1765-1780 in the forms of early classicism. Thanks to the innovative project of S.I. In 1788, the French architect Jean-Baptiste Vallin-Delamot was brought in to work on finishing the facades of New Holland. According to his design, the famous arch was created in 1779-1787, thrown across the canal connecting the internal pool with the Moika. The arch was a rare combination of red building brick and cut granite, the blocks of which were used to construct Doric order columns bearing a powerful entablature, which gave this structure harmony and monumentality. Kuznya House

On New Holland, in the restored building of a former forge, there is Kuznya House - a club and restaurant. To preserve the historical layout of the premises, Kuznya House was divided into 3 parts: a ballroom with a bar, stage and seating for guests, a Chef’s kitchen for culinary master classes, and a tea room with large and comfortable sofas, as well as bookshelves. In summer there is a spacious and cozy terrace overlooking the beautiful garden of the island.

The interior was decorated following samples of photographs from the archives of St. Petersburg apartments of the early 20th century. At the same time, the space was furnished with furniture from the 70s of the last century. The kitchen of Kuznya House is as permeated with eclectic style as the entire design of the establishment.

The menu features Asian, European and Mediterranean flavors, as well as recipes from simple and delicious food pioneer Isaac Correa. It was this professional chef who was the first in Russia to promote simple food, and returned here again especially for Kuznya House.

Brand chef Isaac Correa has developed 2 menus in the simple food tradition - daytime and evening. The drinks at Kuznya House are handled by the team of the Solid & Liquid on-site bar, headed by the well-known Vlad Kudryavtsev, the bar manager of Bar 812, who worked on the cocktail menus of many Ginza Project establishments.

An interesting point is the fact that during the day Kuznya House operates as a restaurant; in the evening all the furniture is removed here for club parties. The program is in charge of a prominent St. Petersburg musician, frontman of the progressive electroacoustic formation Kito Jempere - Kirill Sergeev. Concerts of famous Russian and foreign artists and musicians are not uncommon in this establishment. Kirill forms the entire musical part of the project: from background music to the “delivery” of domestic and international stars here.

The design of the establishments was carried out by Sergei Bukin and Lyubov Leontyeva. Wooden wall panels, massive mirrors, lacquered furniture, wrought iron and brass elements - everything corresponds to the codes set by the architects, which are present in all temporary buildings of the park.

Let's return to Volkonsky Deli, and it is worth noting that this establishment has become one of the most popular cafe formats in St. Petersburg, and it was precisely this kind of project that was missing on the island of New Holland.

"Volkonsky Deli" invites guests of New Holland to have a quick and tasty meal, offering to collect all the food for a picnic on a large lawn, or simply take ready-made dishes with them. Visitors love hot and fragrant pastries, fragrant and tender bread, as well as desserts - unusual and perfect cakes, fresh and melt-in-your-mouth pastries, extraordinary macaroons. The menu also features hearty and substantial dishes.

And here the talented Isaac Correa “had a hand” in developing the menu. All items are designed to be taken away, or can be enjoyed on the spot - in a cafe. At night, a club area opens here. The Volkonsky company developed this concept specifically for the project “New Holland: cultural urbanization.”

The cafe consists of 2 halls. The first hall with a huge showcase displaying baked goods from Volkonsky’s own bakery, known throughout the country, and a variety of desserts, sandwiches, salads, etc. The second room has a large red lacquered table, a velvet sofa, and high Viennese bar stools. Here you can eat if you wish. The entrance to the cafe is from the herb garden.

294 years ago, on September 21, 1721, by decree of Peter I, the first military port of Russia, New Holland, was founded. the site recalls interesting facts from the history of one of the most unusual places in St. Petersburg, which has retained its special atmosphere for several centuries.

"Dutch" Peter's Palace

A unique island within the city appeared not at the whim of nature, but thanks to the engineering thought of city planners and the will of Peter I, who developed St. Petersburg as a shipbuilding center on the Baltic Sea.

In 1719, the Kryukov and Admiralteysky canals were dug to transport building materials between the Admiralty and warehouses located at the mouth of the Moika River. This formed a triangle of land, to which the warehouses were later moved. Also, according to historians, one of Peter’s working residences was built of wood on the island. The atmosphere that reigned here reminded the emperor of Holland. According to one version, this is the reason why the place got its name. It almost immediately began to appear in documents. Thus, in a written order of 1720, the tsar gave instructions to build a workshop “near the canal in New Holland.”

It is worth noting that at one time historians disagreed on whether there was a royal palace. The author of “Description of St. Petersburg” Andrei Bogdanov, who lived in the 18th century, did not mention it in his book, although he listed in detail the houses in this vicinity. However, Tatyana Solovyova in her book “New Holland and Its Surroundings” proves on the basis of archival documents that Peter’s palace did exist.

Also, in the diary entries of contemporaries, memories of the festive festivities that Peter organized here after the launching of the galleys were preserved.

“He served delicious dishes and drinks at a table set under these green trees, or put bottles of wine and cold snacks on boards lying on the ground and, standing, treated himself and treated his naval officers,” wrote the Swedish envoy to Russia Karl Reingold Burke.

"Bottle" of New Holland

A naval prison building was built on the island at the beginning of the 19th century. The author of the design of the prisoner tower was the architect of the military department, Alexander Egorovich Staubert. The representative of classicism had already established himself by that time, having created the Military Orphanage on Moskovsky Prospekt, the building of the Nikolaevsky Cavalry School, and the building of the Petrishule Women's Gymnasium.

According to his design, a three-story ring-shaped structure was erected on the western tip of the island, the prototype of which, according to some sources, was the building of the English prison in the city of Osborne. In total, the building could accommodate 250 criminals on two floors. The first floor was reserved for household needs. There were storerooms, a bakery and a prison kitchen. There were also prison guards there.

This tower was popularly called the “bottle”. There is an opinion that it was precisely because of this that the expression “climbing into a bottle” came into use.

Canvas iconostasis

During imprisonment, criminals could learn a profession and even earn extra money. By the time of their release, they had even accumulated a salary, so they did not emerge empty-handed.

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, consecrated in February 1831, operated for prisoners on the territory of New Holland. The “marine” decoration of the cathedral was amazing. Here you could find silver utensils and ancient icons that sailors used to take with them on voyages. The iconostasis itself was made on canvas.

The church has not survived to this day. It was liquidated in February 1919.

Contribution of Dmitry Mendeleev

The name of the famous scientist Dmitry Mendeleev is associated with New Holland. On his initiative, an experimental pool was created here in 1893 “to conduct tests on water resistance.” Newspapers of that time wrote how on March 8 the emperor and his wife, Princess Ksenia Alexandrovna and Prince Sergei Mikhailovich inspected the new building.

A three-meter indoor pool with a length of 120 meters made it possible to study shipbuilding issues and conduct hydrodynamic tests different models ships. It is worth noting that at the beginning of the 20th century, the legendary cruiser Aurora was also tested here.

Also, under the leadership of Dmitry Ivanovich, a laboratory was created on the island to develop smokeless gunpowder, which by that time was already in service with the armies of several European countries. The scientific laboratory is located in New Holland in former building meat pickling plants. Its leader was the professor of the Kronstadt officer mine classes I. Cheltsov, and Mendeleev himself became the leader and consultant on the affairs of the research unit.

There is a story that a Russian scientist was practically forced to resort to industrial reconnaissance to find out the main components of smokeless powder. While traveling around Europe, Dmitry Ivanovich visited universities, gave lectures, and met with representatives of the scientific community. At the same time, he rented an apartment in close proximity to railway station so that you could watch from the window the carriages that were heading to the gunpowder factories. As Georgy Zuev writes in his book “Where the Kryukov Canal is...”, in those years the names of the chemicals being transported and the exact address of their delivery location were indicated on the wagons. It was not difficult for the Russian chemist to track the movement of cargo, thereby recognizing the main components of smokeless gunpowder. Returning to Russia, he developed a technology for the production of a substance he called pyrocollodium.

Revolutionary Navy radio station

In 1915, a 25-kilowatt radio station of the Naval Headquarters was built on the territory of New Holland, which at that time became the most powerful in Russia.

During the revolutionary events she had to play an important role. During the October Revolution it was captured by the Bolsheviks. It was she who conveyed the message about the change of power in the country - the fall of the Provisional Government.

On November 9, 1917, Vladimir Lenin arrived in New Holland and conveyed the appeal he had written, “Radio to All,” which began with the words “to all regimental, divisional, corps, army and other committees, to all soldiers of the revolutionary army and sailors of the revolutionary fleet.”

The appeal spoke of the need to conclude peace with Germany

“Soldiers! The cause of peace is in our hands. You will not allow counter-revolutionary generals to disrupt the great cause of peace... Let the regiments in position immediately elect representatives to formally enter into negotiations on a truce with the enemy. The Council of People's Commissars gives you the right to do this...,” it said.

The radio station of the revolutionary fleet in New Holland existed until 1924. Later its buildings were turned into warehouses.
