The maximum depth of the reservoir does not exceed 13.5 meters, and the average is about 7.4 meters, so the sea warms up quite quickly and the water temperature near the shore is already by mid-May often reaches mark +18°С. It is at this time that a full-fledged beach season starts at the resorts of the Azov Sea, which usually lasts almost until the end of September. Sea of Azov geographically and climatically
The Sea of Azov in geography is a semi-enclosed sea of the Atlantic basin and the most continental on the planet - in terms of distance from the ocean, located within two countries - Ukraine (territorially - Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Kherson regions, the north-eastern coast of the Crimean Peninsula) and Russia ( Krasnodar region, Rostov region).
In comparison with other seas, for example, the Black Sea (with which it is connected through Kerch Strait- approx.), Azovskoye is a rather small reservoir: its maximum length is about 380 km, its width is about 200 km, and its total length coastline does not exceed 1500 km.
Most of the coast of the Azov Sea is flat, small shell beaches. The only exceptions are coastal hills volcanic origin, which can be seen in the southern part of the reservoir.
Climate of the Sea of Azov is very strongly influenced by the vast steppe massifs that surround it on almost all sides, both within Ukraine and in the Ciscaucasia and Crimea - with their characteristic low amount of precipitation - an average of 300-500 mm per year.
Therefore, in the resorts of the Azov Sea, rain is a rare and short-term phenomenon, as is cloudiness - especially in summer time, which greatly pleases tourists and creates good conditions for a beach holiday.
In summer, local circulation of air masses is established on the coast in the direction from sea to land - during the day, and from land to sea - at night. These are the familiar breezes that soften even the extreme midday heat. The Sea of Azov had many names and was renamed several times. The origin of today's name is not known for certain. According to one version, Scythian tribes lived in the vicinity of the reservoir. Their settlement was called “Asoki”, which is similar to “Azov”. The Sea of Azov is remote from the World Ocean, so it belongs to the class of continental bodies of water. During the cold season, it partially, and sometimes completely, freezes.
The topography of the bottom of the reservoir is quite simple. The increase in depth occurs slowly and smoothly. The deepest part is concentrated in the center of the sea. There are also hills at the bottom. Two of them are extended in a western direction - the Morskaya and Arabat banks, and one in the east - Zhelezinskaya.
